KFIX Rock News: Queen Debut Clips Of Unreleased Tracks

queen-forever-trailer-unreleased-songs-330x220Queen Forever, the upcoming compilation that features three previously unreleased Queen tracks, doesn’t hit stores until November 10, but you can hear segments of a number of the tunes now in a new trailer for the album.

The two-minute, 18-second clip can be viewed at the band’s official YouTube channel.

The video includes snippets of all three unreleased songs featured on the record — “There Must Be More to Life than This,” “Love Kills” and “Let Me in Your Heart Again” — as well as segments from several other tracks.

“There Must Be More to Life than This” is one of two famous recordings that Queen frontman Freddie Mercury made with Michael Jackson.  It was recorded during the band’s Hot Space sessions, but the backing track was never completed.  Queen brought in producer William Orbit to finish the song for the project.

“Love Kills,” meanwhile, was a song Mercury wrote for the soundtrack to the 1984 restored version of the 1927 sci-fi film Metropolis, while “Let Me in Your Heart Again” was an unfinished composition from the 1984 Queen album, The Works.

The trailer also includes snippets of Queen classics and gems like “Love of My Life,” “You’re My Best Friend,” “A Winter’s Tale,” “Born to Love You,” “Bijou” and “Who Wants to Live Forever.”

The music is accompanied by a montage of video clips and concert footage from throughout the band’s career.

Queen Forever will be available as a 20-track single CD and as a 36-track two-CD set.

KFIX Rock News: Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page Discusses Making “Stairway To Heaven”

8580315707_ced88ec6d3_mThe next wave of releases in the ongoing Led Zeppelin reissue campaign includes a expanded version of 1971’s Led Zeppelin IV, which features one of the all-time great rock anthems, “Stairway to Heaven.”

In a new BBC News video feature, guitarist Jimmy Page discusses how the epic song was written as he listens to the remastered vinyl version of the track.

Page points out that he wanted the beginning of the tune to feature “quite a fragile, exposed acoustic guitar” reminiscent of the Bach   “Bourree” from the composer’s Suite in E Minor for lute.

He then notes that the recorders heard early in the song, which were played by John Paul Jones, added a medieval feel.

Jimmy explains that the concept and structure of the song was thought out in advance.

“The idea of ‘Stairway” was to have a piece of music…whereby it would just keep unfolding into more layers and more moods,” he notes, “and…the subtlety and the intensity of the overlay of the composition would actually accelerate as it went through on every level — every emotional level, every musical level.”

Page points out that putting the song together was “somewhat complicated” because, initially, there were no vocals to anchor the track since Robert Plant had yet to write them.  Jimmy says he marveled at how quickly Plant came up with the words once he did get down to writing, something he did in the studio while the rest of the band was running through the track.

The 70-year-old rocker says that when it came time for the tune’s now-iconic guitar solo, he wanted a section that resembled “a sort of fanfare” to create “a definite transition.”

Following the soaring solo, the song reaches its finale, a section in which, Page notes, “the passion has just unfolded [in] every respect.”

As the song comes to an end, Page reflects on the fruitful period during which Led Zeppelin recorded “Stairway to Heaven.”

“It really was an inspired time,” says Page.  “It sort of shows.  The lasting quality of this music over all these years is the fact that everyone’s playing so honestly and with such conviction.

Expanded and remastered editions Led Zeppelin IV and 1973’s Houses of the Holy will be released on October 28.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘The Judge’ bends and breaks

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

I found it very difficult to judge “The Judge.” Perhaps more than than any film in recent memory, “The Judge” flirts with the line between good cinema and bad cinema, between right and wrong.

The premise is tried, tired and true and the writing is, at times, excruciatingly unimaginative. Just about every “big city lawyer comes home to his rural hometown” trope is shamelessly present. Not only are the poor writing choices glaring obvious, they are executed with such gusto that they occasionally work, which is confusing, and are occasionally abysmal.

Robert Downy Jr. and Robert Duvall lead an impressive and talented cast. The actors commitment to this story is evident, and comes through in their performances. A committed actor will almost always deliver a better performance than someone who is phoning it it; however, commitment to a project that is as unsteady as “The Judge” occasionally has greats like Downy Jr. and, to a lesser degree, Duvall taking shots that hit nothing but air.

I found it difficult to get overly excited or overly morose about “The Judge.” Every time it felt like the movie was heading down a path that ended in a ravine filled with terrible “Lifetime Channel-esque” dramatic reveals the proverbial bridge would magically complete itself and the film would coast to safety.

That feeling of never knowing when the film might finally topple is perhaps the best description and review that I can make. Despite all of the back and forth, “The Judge” is ultimately a poor film with strong moments as opposed to a good film with weak moments. If taken out of the hands of a subjective reviewer and judged instead by an absolute law, such as gravity, “The Judge” would crumble and, ultimately, fall.

The Vancouver Colombian reports booking company Northwest Events and Marketing paid Nugent the settlement after his appearance at the Clark County Fair in Washington State was canceled.

When Nugent’s appearance was announced in April, critics circulated a petition to get Nugent off the bill.

State fair organizers say the cancellation was not because of the petition but because of a contractual conflict.

Gilmour tells the BBC he’s “pretty certain there will not be any follow up to this” because keyboardist Richard Wright is dead.

Gilmour says the album is a tribute to Wright, who Gilmour feels was under-appreciated, even by him.

Gilmour says people can get judgmental and think that “someone is not quite pulling his weight enough, without realizing that theirs is a different weight to pull.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Jan Hooks has died.

The 57-year-old Hooks died Thursday in New York, according to The New York Times. The newspaper confirmed the death through Hooks’ agent, Lisa Lieberman.

The comic actress was a versatile performer whose “SNL” impressions ranged from Nancy Reagan to Sinead O’Connor.

Hooks, a Decatur, Ga., native, moved into prime-time in 1991 as a cast member on the sitcom “Designing Women.” She later did an Emmy Award-nominated turn on “3rd Rock from the Sun.”

Hooks also appeared in 1992’s “Batman Returns” and voiced convenience store owner Apu’s wife on “The Simpsons” for several years.
