‘Gone Girl’ jumpstarts end-of-the-year cinema

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

“Gone Girl” is a dark, twisting story about a wife, played by Rosamund Pike, who disappears and the husband, played by Ben Affleck, who is accused of her murder and the equally dark and twisting relationship that exists between the two.

This is the latest entry in director David Fincher’s (“The Social Network,” “Fight Club,” “and “Se7en”) impressive resume of dramatically tense thrillers that bend away from the light, both physically and, much more importantly, psychologically. Fincher has a gift for finding an intimate darkness in characters, even when extraordinary events are afoot. While I wouldn’t put “Gone Girl” at the top of Fincher’s successes, it is nonetheless a well-deserved entry.

Affleck and Pike deliver compelling performances as Nick and Amy Dunne. Their individual character work coupled with their very complex interactions make a solid foundation that the rest of the film builds on very well.

“Gone Girl” is a satisfying mind romp that is difficult, at the best of times, to predict. This is one of the best examples of a cinematic roller coaster that I can think of, second only to “The Dark Knight”. The action and drama rises and falls so often in “Gone Girl” that I wasn’t entirely sure when or where the movie would end. For a film that is two and half hours long to feel like it reached it’s ending at about an hour and a half in is both an outstanding accomplishment and, at the same time, the film’s greatest flaw. The final ascents and descents are less tightly wound than those in the first half of the film. As such, some of the tension starts to unravel. However, that moves “Gone Girl” out of outstanding-territory only slightly. If this is the precursor to the great cinema we can expect this fall, it looks like the holidays might be coming a little early.

KFIX Rock News: Sammy Hagar Talks Details Of Upcoming Acoustic Album

SammyHagarLiteRoast630_100214Full details have been announced about Sammy Hagar’s latest solo album, an acoustic collection titled Lite Roast, which will be released on October 13.

The 11-track disc features unplugged renditions of songs from throughout the Red Rocker’s career, recorded with guitar and vocal accompaniment from Vic Johnson of Hagar’s longtime backing group The Wabos.

Lite Roast includes versions of a pair of classic Van Halen tunes, “Dreams” and “Finish What Ya Started,” as well as stripped-down renditions of tunes that appeared on the following Hagar solo efforts: 1987’s I Never Said Goodbye, 1997’s Marching to Mars, 1999’s Red Voodoo, 2000’s Ten 13, 2006’s Livin’ It Up and 2013’s Sammy Hagar & Friends.

Sammy recently told ABC News Radio that the inspiration behind Lite Roast came to him while rehearsing for the star-studded Acoustic-4-a-Cure benefit concert he and Metallica’s James Hetfield organized earlier this year in San Francisco.

“Working up that set for myself, I learned how to play and sing acoustically, and I loved it so much I just took a bunch of my old songs and made a record,” Hagar explained.  “It’s an acoustically brewed CD.”

He added about the unplugged versions of his tunes, “Some of them I think are better than they’ve ever been like this.”

On Wednesday, October 1, Hagar and Johnson played a free acoustic set featuring songs from the new record at the Sammy’s Island Bar & Grill franchise in Roseville, California.  Parts of the concert were filmed for a television special that will raise money for the community of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, which was severely damaged last month by Hurricane Odile.

Here is the full track list of Lite Roast:

“Red Voodoo” (from Red Voodoo)
“One Sip” (from Livin’ It Up!)
“Finish What Ya Started” (from Van Halen’s OU812)
“Eagles Fly” (from I Never Said Goodbye)
“The Love” (from Red Voodoo)
“Father Son” (from Sammy Hagar & Friends)
“Dreams” (from Van Halen’s 5150)
“Deeper Kinda Love” (from Ten 13)
“Who Has the Right” (from Marching to Mars)
“Sailin'” (from Livin’ It Up!)
“Halfway to Memphis” (from Livin’ It Up!)

KFIX Rock News: Roger Waters Reminds Fans He’s Not A Member Of Pink Floyd, Not Involved In New Album

5660947778_89b46c8787_mRoger Walters left Pink Floyd nearly 30 years ago, but some people apparently never got the memo.

In a post on Facebook, Waters says he wants fans to know he has nothing to do with the upcoming Pink Floyd album, The Endless River.

In the post Waters writes, “Some people have been asking Laurie, my wife, about a new album I have coming out in November. Errhh? I don’t have an album coming out, they are probably confused.”

Waters, who left the group as a result of creative differences, goes on to explain, “David Gilmour and Nick Mason have an album coming out. It’s called Endless River. David and Nick constitute the group Pink Floyd. I on the other hand, am not part of Pink Floyd. I left Pink Floyd in 1985, that’s 29 years ago.”

“I had nothing to do with either of the Pink Floyd studio albums, Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell, nor the Pink Floyd tours of 1987 and 1994, and I have nothing to do with Endless River,” Waters explains, adding “Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip.”

The Endless River is a collection of tracks that have been reworked from the 1993 sessions for The Division Bell. Mason has described the new album as a “tribute” to Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright, who died in 2008.  The Endless River will be available November 10.
