Russell Community Theater presents ‘Delval Divas’ Oct. 7 to 11

Submitted by RCT

RUSSELL — Russell Community Theater closes out its 2014 season with “Delval Divas,” written by Barbara Pease Weber and directed by RCT volunteer John Dumler. This contemporary comedy shows a slice of life from the inside of the Delaware Valley Federal Correctional Facility.

Divas Russell
From left, Shalyn Rankin, Crystal Craig, Teressa Roe, Kristin Wagner and Sheryl Krug.

Delval houses some of the most successful “pink”-collar criminals to have ever walked the earth. Stella, Rosemary, Linda and Beth have the warden in one pocket and the guard in the other, and are able to maintain their luxurious lifestyles. Troubles begin when Beth is prematurely released and a murderess arrives in her place. To top it off, the Department of Corrections has announced its intention to close the Delval facility. The Divas get busy solving a murder and saving Delval.

Both veteran and new actors are striving to bring characters to life. Crystal Craig, Teressa Roe and Sheryl Krug take to the stage with plenty of RCT experience under their belts. Kristin Wagner and Kaylee Kuhlmann-Donner return to the stage after several appearances with RCT, and Shalyn Rankin is appearing in an RCT production for the first time.

Stella Wild, MBA (Crystal Craig) is a stockbroker convicted of insider trading. Stella made millions on Wall Street and is the unofficial boss and Diva-in-Charge. Rosemary Adams, Esq. (Teressa Roe) is a banking lawyer convicted of skimming mortgage funds. Rosemary is the kind-hearted, “Compassionate Diva.” Linda Robertson, MD (Sheryl Krug) is a medical doctor convicted of defrauding Meidcaid in a managed care scandal. Linda is the “Neurotic Diva.” Beth Ziegler, MBA (Kristin Wagner) is a technology wizard convicted of Internet fraud. Beth is the “Calm and Cool Diva.” Sharon Watson (Shalyn Rankin) has been charged with killing her ex-husband’s new wife. Sharon is the “Innocent Diva.” Lucille (Kaylee Kuhlmann-Donner) is a prison guard by day and MBA student by night, thanks to the support of the Divas. Lucille has a gutsy exterior with a tender interior and is the “Diva with the Attitude.”

Performances run Tuesday through Saturday, Oct. 7 to 11 at the RCT Playhouse (Fifth and Kansas, Russell). Show time is at 8 p.m. Admission is $10 or by season ticket. “Delval Divas” is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Inc. For more information, contact RCT at (785) 483-4057.

Russell Community Theater is a nonprofit theater company in Russell. The sole purpose of RCT is to produce theater for the community and the surrounding area. Completely volunteer-driven, RCT is supported financially solely through ticket admissions and gifts from those supportive of community theater. Since its inception in 1986, RCT has presented 80 full-scale theatrical productions.

PHOENIX (AP) – The new thrift store in Phoenix has a sweet name: Alice’s Attic.

The “Alice” behind it happens to be Alice Cooper.

The Arizona Republic reports Cooper held a ribbon-cutting ceremony last week for the store.

It’s in the same building as his Rock Teen Center, which helps at-risk kids learn music.

Cooper says he’s a shopaholic who sometimes comes home from tour with 10 suitcases full of clothes. Some of the items for sale in the store are items Cooper wore.

Part of the proceeds benefit the youth center, and Cooper plans to teach kids how to work in the store.

It shows a man rowing a boat through clouds.

The album features tracks that were originally part of the 1993 “Division Bell” sessions, with new and re-recorded parts.

Gifted guitarist will perform next month at Hays library

Hays Public Library

Contemporary traditional guitarist Dorian Michael will play at the Hays Public Library at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4 in the Schmidt Gallery. The live music performance is free and open to the public.

Michael has been a working guitarist for four decades and enjoys playing a wide variety of music. From blues to rock ’n’ roll, Michael has played it all. He considers his solo style to be traditional contemporary; his music and guitar playing is inspired by his musical interest across various genres. With musical surprises and unique style, Michael will delight the HPL audience.

“Some music makes you feel, some makes you think and some music is just for the fun of it. I try to get to all those places in the space of a performance” Michael said.

Not only has Michael created a solo career, but frequently plays with various bands. Michael regularly performs with The Irene Cathaway Rhythm and Blues Band, The Mystery Trees, The Cinders Blues Band, and Kenny & Dorian.

Michael has also written two books about alternate guitar tunings for Centerstream Publications. He has also filmed three guitar finger style instruction videos for Centerstream.

‘This is Where I Leave You’ leaves room for improvement

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

“This is Where I Leave You” is a very typical “Family Reconnects After a Loss” type of film. These movies usually play out in very predictable fashion – the film opens with a death in the family, the adult children come back to their childhood home and bring their real life problems with them, there’s friction, there’s a breakthrough, there’s healing, and then they all leave. “This is Where I Leave You” follows all of the above steps and throws in a few “out of left field” surprises when it has time to fill.

This isn’t a horrible movie, but there’s nothing special here either. “This is Where I Leave You” boasts a very talented cast led by Jason Bateman, Tina Fey and Jane Fonda. Unfortunately, even the collective acting chops of this group couldn’t put together even one great performance, let alone the multiple great performances that were possible. Furthermore, characters with existing issues that then have to deal with a family crisis frequently come off as mopey rather than deeply troubled.

The difference between what this film was capable of and what it produced was very noticeable to me. This film structure always has great potential. Typically, the drama takes place in relatively few locations and there’s a distinct lack of action scenes to distract the audience. What’s left is a concentrated canvas that is inherently intimate. Too often, the scope and vision of this type of film extends beyond its familiar setting and is mired by an unbalanced mixture of comedy and drama. It’s an incredibly difficult thing to seamlessly blend a compelling story with strong humor. The result is much more likely to be halfhearted humor that detracts from the potential of the greater story.

This film is a perfect example of something that is less than the sum of its parts. The sound hull of the basic dramatic structure is weakened by the ornaments added for spectacle; and, the slow intake of unnecessary cargo. The resulting ship is sitting precariously low in the water, even if it appears to be afloat.

Jimi Hendrix fans can now take a selfie with the guitar god — in wax-statue form, that is.

A wax likeness of the legendary musician was unveiled Friday by his brother Leon Hendrix at Madame Tussauds San Francisco

The ceremony coincided with Jimi Hendrix Day, honoring the 44th anniversary of his death, which occurred September 18, 1970.

A team of 20 artists worked for more than three months to create the lifelike figure, with painstaking detail to Hendrix’s guitar.

The figure got a thumb’s up from Hendrix’s brother, who praised the museum’s work.

“The representation and detail of his figure is uncanny,” he said.  “It’s an honor to see him immortalized in this fashion.”

Madame Tussauds San Francisco is in the city’s Fisherman’s Wharf district.

KFIX Rock News: KISS Raises $1 Million For Renovation Of Military Museum

kisslogofaceIt isn’t often KISS goes without makeup for a live show these days, but the band made an exception, playing an acoustic gig to raise money for a military museum in Oregon.

The group previously has supported the Historical Outreach Foundation in its goal of raising $15 million to renovate the Oregon Military Museum, but the foundation’s event this past Sunday in Lake Oswego, Oregon, marked the first time the Rock and Roll Hall of Famers performed at one of the foundation’s events.

In all, KISS helped raise $1 million toward the endeavor. Tickets to the evening cost $2,500. The evening also auctioned off one of Paul Stanley’s guitars, which he has played since 1989, for $20,000, reports The Oregonian.

KISS guitarist and native Oregonian Tommy Thayer is the link to the project. The museum will be named after Thayer’s father, Brigadier General James B. Thayer, a 93-year-old World War II veteran who freed Holocaust survivors from the Nazi concentration camps in 1945.

KISS bassist Gene Simmons told The Oregonian that museums are important to support for several reasons.

“A museum is a living history book, because young people today and the future generations can’t just read books or watch it on video because it’s unemotional,” Simmons said.

He continued that honoring the military with a museum shining a light on men and women in uniform is relevant to understanding current events.

“There is evil in the world,” he said. “People are being beheaded today, not in some medieval time.”

Check out the set list from the show below:

“Comin’ Home”
“Hard Luck Woman”
“Calling Dr. Love”
“Do You Love Me?”
“Plaster Caster”
“Shout It Out Loud”
“Got to Choose”
“Christine Sixteen”
“Lick It Up”
“Goin’ Blind”
“Love Her All I Can”
“Hide Your Heart”
“Beth”
“Rock and Roll All Nite”
