KFIX Rock News: Led Zeppelin Could Settle “Stairway to Heaven” Lawsuit for $1…Sort Of

23Attorneys representing late rocker Randy California are offering to settle a potentially lucrative copyright-infringement lawsuit brought against Led Zeppelin over the band’s classic song “Stairway to Heaven” for just one dollar — but there’s a catch.

According to Bloomberg News, the lawyers are asking for Robert Plantand Jimmy Page to give California a writing credit on the tune, in exchange for foregoing a court trial that currently is scheduled to start on May 10 in Los Angeles.

The songwriting credit would result in California’s estate being entitled to a share of future earnings that “Stairway to Heaven” brings in, and also may mean that the estate could be in line for a percentage of back royalties.

“It’s always been about credit where credit is due,” said attorney Francis Alexander Malofiy at a pre-trial hearing held Monday in L.A. The lawsuit, which Malofiy filed on behalf of the administrator of California’s trust, claims that the opening riff of “Stairway to Heaven” was based on a guitar part from “Taurus,” a song by Randy’s old band Spirit.

Lawyers for Led Zeppelin contend that the band members should not be liable for copyright infringement because the riffs of “Stairway to Heaven” and “Taurus” both feature a musical structure that has commonly appeared in songs for centuries.

KFIX Rock News: Steven Tyler Says Aerosmith Probably Will Launch a Farewell Tour Next Year

yFAUCCNLKSsWOFaxBkfwrm125UE@200x200As Steven Tyler prepares to release his debut solo album, a country-flavored project that’s due out this summer, the Aerosmith frontman reports that the band will return to the road next year for what may be the legendary rockers’ final tour.

“I’m doing 30 [solo] shows from May until August,” Tyler revealed toRolling Stone.

“And then in 2017 we go out with Aerosmith. We’re probably doing a farewell tour.”

The 68-year-old singer then backtracked a bit, adding, “Look, there’s two bands that still have the original members, us and the Stones. I’m grateful for that. Whether we do a farewell tour or go into the studio and do another record, I’m just excited about it.”

Of course original Stone Brian Jones died in 1969, and original bass player Bill Wyman retired from the band in 1993, and there are other classic rock acts still touring with all their original members like ZZ Top and U2.

Some tensions apparently emerged recently between Tyler and his longtime songwriting partner, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, after Perry made some critical comments to USA Today directed at Steven’s recent solo single “Red, White & You.”

“If I didn’t know him when I heard the song I’d go, ‘It’s OK, next,'” Perry told the newspaper in February. “He’s got a f****** rhinestone cowboy hat going, ‘Yippee ki yay.’ I don’t know what else to say about that.”

Tyler initially responded to Perry’s critique by suggesting that he thought Joe was jealous, but he took things more in stride when talking with Rolling Stone about the gibe.

“I’ve read what Joe has said, but then I really, really, couldn’t be here doing what I’m doing now if it wasn’t for Joe Perry,” Steven maintained. “It’s a strange catch-22, but if you slow down enough you get to see it…. I wouldn’t be anywhere without those guys, so I’m as grateful as I can be.”

KFIX Rock News: Former Rolling Stones Bassist Bill Wyman Diagnosed with Prostate Cancer

stonesinFormer Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. The 79-year-old musician’s condition was revealed in a brief statement posted Tuesday morning on his official Facebook page.

The note adds that Wyman “is undergoing treatment and is expected to make a full recovery as it was caught in the early stages.”

Wyman joined the Rolling Stones in December 1962, replacing Dick Taylor, who went on to be lead guitarist of the U.K. band The Pretty Things. Wyman played on all of The Stones’ albums through 1989’s Steel Wheels, and announced his departure from the group in 1993.

Since leaving The Rolling Stones, Wyman’s main musical project has been The Rhythm Kings, a blues-rock group that mainly tours in the U.K. and Europe. Bill briefly reunited with the Stones to play at the band’s two late-2012 50th anniversary shows in London, but he chose not to join the group for any further performances.

Last June, Wyman released his first solo album in 33 years, Back to Basics.

KFIX Rock News: Fans Can Now Visit Jimi Hendrix’s Apartment

jiminameLONDON (AP) – Jimi Hendrix’s former girlfriend remembers the surreal moments when music fans would knock on their apartment door in London and want to talk about composer George Frideric Handel.

Kathy Etchingham says Hendrix would show the students around and they were oblivious to who Hendrix was.

Hendrix rented in the same building where Handel lived in the 18th century.

Hendrix’s former apartment has been restored to how it looked in the 1960s and will open to visitors tomorrow.

The bedroom may look awfully tidy for a rock star, but Etchingham says Hendrix was a former U.S. Army soldier and always made his bed.
