KFIX Rock News: New Album Reuniting Classic ’70s Santana Lineup Due in April

santanivinIt’s official. A long-in-the-works album that reunites most of the members of Santana’s classic early-’70s lineups is on its way.

Santana IV, due April 15, brings together Carlos Santana, guitarist Neal Schon, singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie, percussionist Michael Carabello and drummer Michael Shrieve for the first time since 1971’sSantana III.

The album will feature 16 all-new tracks written by the band, two of which will feature guest vocals from The Isley Brothers’ Ronald Isley. And the band promises fans will be excited about extended guitar fireworks from Santana and Schon, particularly on what is being described as a “British blues-tinged” tune, “Shake It,” that features two lengthy solo workouts. Rounding out the group’s lineup for the project were two current Santana members — bass player Benny Rietveld and percussionist Karl Perazzo.

The new record — which features a modern image echoing the classic roaring-lion artwork that appeared on Santana’s 1969 self-titled debut — has been nearly three years in the making, with rehearsals and writing sessions beginning in 2013, and recording continuing through 2014 and 2015.

“It was magical,” Carlos Santana says in a statement. “We didn’t have to try to force the vibe — it was immense. From there, we then needed to come up with a balance of songs and jams that people would immediately identify as Santana.”

“Carlos and I feel more connected than ever,” adds Schon, who along with Rolie left Santana in 1972 to formJourney. “We get super-aggressive when we play, but also melodic and poetic. We have an incredible dialog with each other on our guitars.”

The album’s lead single, the Rolie-penned “Anywhere You Want to Go,” will be available starting February 5.

Santana IV will be released on CD, as a two-LP 180-gram vinyl set and in downloadable formats, and fans at select shows on Santana’s upcoming Luminosity tour will get a copy of the album with every pair of tickets purchased.

Here is the complete track list of Santana IV:

“Shake It”
“Anywhere You Want to Go”
“Fillmore East”
“Love Makes the World Go Round” (featuring Ronald Isley)
“Freedom in Your Mind” (featuring Ronald Isley)

KFIX Rock News: David Bowie Dead at 69

bowiemainABC News has confirmed that legendary musician David Bowie has died at age 69.  While initially thought to be a hoax, a representative for the rock legend said that sadly, the news was true.

News first broke on Bowie’s Facebook page, with a post that explained that the musician, “died peacefully … [Sunday] … surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer.

While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”

Bowie’s son, movie director Duncan Jones, tweeted, “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be offline for a while. Love to all.”  Jones was Bowie’s son with his first wife, Angie Bowie; they divorced in 1980. Bowie had been married to supermodel Iman since 1992; they have one daughter, Alexandria Zahra Jones.

Bowie, who turned 69 on Friday, had just released his 25th album, Blackstar, which was hailed by critics and fans alike.  The general public was unaware of his illness.

Bowie, a singer, songwriter, actor and fashion icon, has been an influence in some way on nearly every modern artist, from Kanye West to Madonna to U2 to Lorde to Lady Gaga.  His influence can be felt in punk rock, new wave and alternative music, ambient, dance, electronic music, and beyond.  Though the decades, his music encompassed pop, glam rock, R&B, funk, dance, soul, progressive rock, hard rock and more.

While his breakthrough hit was 1969’s “Space Oddity,” about ill-fated astronaut Major Tom, Bowie’s defining moment was the creation of his alter-ego, Ziggy Stardust, a bisexual alien rock superstar whose exploits were documented in the 1972 glam-rock masterpiece The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars.

Around that time, Bowie also publicly stated that he was gay, but that might have been a publicity stunt. Still, his gender-bending wardrobe, outrageous style and fluid sexuality made him irresistible to men and women alike.  In 1976, he said he was bisexual, but in 1983, he told Rolling Stone, that he “always was a closet heterosexual,” and said that publicly declaring he was bisexual was, “the biggest mistake I ever made.”  Asked about that comment in 2002, he said that he felt stating that he was bisexual ultimately, “stood in the way of so much I wanted to do” in America, because it, “is a very puritanical place.”

Bowie’s first U.S. #1 was “Fame,” co-written by his good friend, John Lennon.  His only other U.S. #1 hit was 1983’s “Let’s Dance,” but his catalog includes a string of classic songs: “Heroes,” “Changes,” “China Girl,” “Rebel Rebel,” “Diamond Dogs,” “Suffragette City,” “Life on Mars,” “Modern Love” and more.  He collaborated with artists as diverse as Iggy Pop, Bing Crosby, Queen, Mick Jagger and Tina Turner.  He produced albums for Iggy Pop’s Stooges, Lou Reed and Mott the Hoople, for whom he wrote the hit “All the Young Dudes.”

As an actor, Bowie, who was trained in theater and mime, appeared in films as diverse as Labyrinth, The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Hunger, A View to a Kill, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Prestige and Zoolander.  “Lazarus,” the title track from Blackstar, was also the basis for a stage musical that opened in New York City last week.

KFIX Rock News: Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander Says Band’s Working on a New Album

cheapmainCheap Trick singer Robin Zander shared some cool news in a recent interview with Hits Daily Double: The band is working on its first studio album since 2009’s The Latest.

Zander says the forthcoming album, which he claims has the working title Bang Zoom Crazy Hello, is “going to be one of our best records.”

The singer tells Hits Daily Double that Cheap Trick is exploring some new sonic ground on the upcoming album, while insisting that it also will include material that will please the band’s longtime fans.

“I think all of our records are a progression of some sort,” Zander explains.  “There’s three great guys and four great chords.  There are three songwriters in the band and we’re all vying for space on the record as we go along on this journey of over 40 years.  So it’s going to be diverse, just like all of our records.”

Zander adds that the upcoming record also “has flavors of 1975.  It really does.  And it’s the same guys in the band, so it sounds like Cheap Trick.  I don’t think anyone is going to be very disappointed.”

It’s worth noting that Cheap Trick’s current lineup features three of the band’s four original members — Zander, guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson.  In recent years, Nielsen’s son Dax has taken over drumming duties from Bun E. Carlos.

Asked what his favorite all-time Cheap Trick album is, Robin says he loves the new one the best, while ranking the band’s 1997 self-titled effort at #2.  “Each record is sort of like a brand new baby, where it’s your favorite thing at that moment in time,” he points out.  “I think we’ve come up with a gem.”

Meanwhile, Cheap Trick is among the nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.  Inductees are slated to be revealed this Thursday.  Zander tells Hits Daily Double he feels honored that the band’s even in the running.

“Just being nominated alone makes you feel like you have the respect of your peers after all this time,” he declares, “And to be honest, I thought I’d probably be dead before anything like that would happen to me.  It’s exciting.”

Cheap Trick currently is winding down their 2015 tour itinerary with a string of West Coast dates, and also has one show scheduled already for 2016.  Here are all of the group’s confirmed tour dates, according toCheapTrick.com:

12/15 — Solana Beach, CA, Belly Up Tavern

KFIX Rock News: Rush’s Geddy Lee Responds to Neil Peart’s Comments; Says Drummer Hasn’t Necessarily “Retired”

rushinIn a new essay penned for Drumhead magazine, Rush’s Neil Peart made comments implying he was now retired, but his band mate Geddy Leethinks the legendary drummer’s remarks were taken out of context.

Lee tells Prog magazine he believes what Peart wrote in his Drumhead piece is in line with what he’s been telling other media outlets with regard to his feeling about not wanting to do major tours anymore.

“There’s really nothing to say.  I think Neil is just explaining his reasons for not wanting to tour, with the toll that it’s taking on his body,” explains Lee.  “That’s all I would care to comment on it.”

The Rush frontman adds that the band, which wrapped its 40th anniversary tour in the summer, still hasn’t discussed their future plans.

“We’ll get together eventually and chat about things,” Lee tells Prog.  “But in my view, there is certainly nothing surprising in what [Peart] said.  Neil just feels that he has to explain with all the thousands of people asking, ‘Why no more tours?’  He needs to explain his side of it.”

In the Drumhead essay, Peart noted that his daughter Olivia had been introducing him to her friends as “a retired drummer,” adding, “True to say — funny to hear.”

Neil went on to point out, “[I]t does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to…take yourself out of the game.  I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing it.'”

KFIX Rock News: Rolling Stones Guitarist Ronnie Wood Set To Become Father Again

stonesinRonnie Wood has more than just a new Rolling Stones tour to look forward to in 2016. The 68-year-old guitarist is set to become a father again: his wife, Sally Humphreys, is due to give birth to twins in June.

A spokesperson for the band issued a statement to NME over the weekend revealing that the Woods “are delighted to announce that they are expecting twins in June 2016.  Needless to say, they are thrilled and overjoyed with the wonderful news.”

This will be the first children Wood will have with the 37-year-old Humphreys, a theater-production-company owner whom he married in 2012.

Ronnie has four grown children from previous relationships, including a son named Jesse from his first marriage, to former model Krissy Wood; and a daughter and a son, Leah and Tyrone, with his second wife, Jo.  Wood also has an adopted Jo’s son,Jamie, from a previous marriage.

In addition, he has eight grandchildren.

In a 2014 interview with The Telegraph, Sally discussed her and Ronnie’s mutual desire to have children together.  “Obviously we’ve spoken about it quite a lot, and you can ask him and his response would be, ‘Well, that would be nice,'” she told the newspaper.  “He’s up for it.”

Before his wife is due to give birth, Wood will be hitting the road with The Rolling Stones on their Latin American Olé Tour, which kicks off February 3 in Santiago, Chile, and is scheduled through a March 17 concert in Mexico City.

KFIX Rock News: Rush Drummer Neil Peart Possibly Retiring

rushcircleRush drummer Neal Peart may be hanging up his sticks.

In an excerpt from an essay featured in the latest issue of Drumhead magazine, first reported by fan site RushIsaBand.com and confirmed by ABC Radio, Peart intimates that he’s retired.

“Lately [my daughter] Olivia has been introducing me to new friends at school as ‘My dad — He’s a retired drummer,'” Peart writes.

“True to say — funny to hear.  And it does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to…take yourself out of the game.  I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing it.'”

It is unclear whether Peart means that he’s just retiring from live drumming, or if he’s retiring from making studio albums.  His full essay is included in the December issue of Drumhead.

Rush finished it’s 40th anniversary touron August 1 at The Forum in Inglewood, California, and many fans have speculated that the trek may have been the Canadian trio’s last.

KFIX Rock News: Postponed U2 Concert Special Airs Tonight on HBO

u2mainThe HBO concert special U2: iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris, which was postponed in the wake of last month’s terrorist attacks in the French capital, premieres tonight at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT.

The program will showcase what now is scheduled to be the final show of U2‘s 2015 tour, taking place December 7 at Paris’ AccorHotels Arena, formerly the Bercy Arena.

Fans can expect to see the Irish rockers play a set of tunes spanning their entire career, from the band’s 1980 debut Boy through its most recent album, 2014’s Songs of Innocence.

U2’s iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Tour performances have been featuring a uniquely designed multimedia stage setup that includes movable, floor-to-ceiling LED screens and a catwalk that stretches across the arena.

The stage allows the band members to move all around each venue they’ve been playing, while the screens display a variety of specially created video presentations.

U2: iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris is being directed by Hamish Hamilton, who has worked on several of the band’s concert videos, including Elevation: Live from Boston, U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castleand Vertigo in 2005: Live from Chicago.

In an HBO Q&A conducted last month, Hamilton discussed how he hoped to help bring the experience of seeing the show in person to a television audience.

“It’s a case of tailoring the experience that was created for all the fans in the arena into a comparable experience for the people at home,” said the director.

“To take it one step further, we have a few surprises in store for the people at home that will create a unique show for them as well.  It’s very much a collaboration at every stage of production to make sure the experience for everyone at home is just as good, if not better.”

Following the special’s premiere, multiple encore screenings will be viewable on HBO and HBO2 throughout December, and the program also will be available on demand starting on Tuesday, December 8.  The show also will be viewable on HBO Go and HBO Now simultaneously with its cable TV premiere.

U2: iNNOCENCE + eXPERIENCE Live in Paris originally was scheduled to air November 14, but that concert and the band’s November 15 show at the AccorHotels Arena were moved, respectively, to December 7 and December 6 following the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris.
