KFIX Rock News: Trailer For New Keith Richards Netflix Doc Premieres Online

keithrichards leadAn official trailer for the upcoming Netflix documentary Keith Richards: Under the Influence has premiered online at the network’s YouTube channel.

The minute-and-a-half clip features scenes of the Rolling Stones guitarist working on his new solo album, Crosseyed Heart, and visiting various U.S. locations that have historical significance to him, including late blues legend Muddy Waters’ home in Chicago.

The trailer includes segments in which Richards explains what inspired him to work on the new album, discusses his love of American roots music and reflects on his life.

“I grew up with American folk music — jazz, blues, Johnny Cash, Muddy Waters,” Keith says in one scene.  “Rock ‘n’ roll’s got nothing on those guys.”

Near the end of the trailer, Richards declares, “Life’s a funny thing…Nobody wants to get old, but they don’t want to die young either.  You just gotta follow this thing down the path.”

As previously reported, Keith Richards: Under the Influence will get its TV premiere on Netflix on September 18, the same day Crosseyed Heart will be released.  The movie was directed by Morgan Neville, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom.

In other news, Richards has premiered a fourth new solo song online as part of his recently launched campaignpromoting Crosseyed Heart.  The new tune, a cover of veteran reggae artist Gregory Isaacs’ “Love Overdue,” began streaming at CrosseyedHeart.com earlier this week after a temporary blue commemorative plaque was unveiled at 7 Broadwick Street in London, the location of a pub where Richards auditioned for the band that would become The Rolling Stones.

The latest heritage marker is the fourth and final plaque that will be unveiled as part of the promo campaign, which began last month.  One marker was unveiled weekly for the last four weeks at a significant site in Richards’ life, and a new song premiered online after each plaque was discovered.

Previous plaques appeared at sites in the London area where Keith lived when he was a child and a teenager, and where he played his first musical gig.  The first three songs from Crosseyed Heart that were unlocked were “Amnesia,” “Substantial Damage” and “Robbed Blind.”

KFIX Rock News: Joe Walsh Plans Autobiography

joe analogLOS ANGELES (AP) – Joe Walsh jokes he used to think he could make more money by not writing a book than by writing one.

Walsh tells Billboard magazine he has been working on a memoir for about a year and he’ll put it out when it’s done.

Walsh says, “Some of it’s really funny. Some of it is what happened. Some of it is other people telling me what I did and some of it is just plain my humor.”

KFIX Rock News: Inflatable Pig Featured On Pink Floyd’s “Animals” Album Cover Withdrawn From Memorabilia Auction

floydSo, the famous inflatable pig seen tied to London’s Battersea Power Station on the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1976 album, Animals, won’t be going on the auction block after all.

The 40-foot prop, nicknamed “Algie,” was supposed to be part of a U.K. memorabilia sale scheduled for September 15 at Durrants auction house, but it has been withdrawn by Rob Harries, the man who created it, who says he now plans to give it back to the band.

Durrants official Dominic Parravani tells ABC Radio, “Pink Floyd came back and said that they wanted to have him back and rehome him…I think after the huge amount of publicity that has been generated, the band thought that Algie should go back to them.”

The auction still will feature a variety other props created for various rock acts by the Halesworth, U.K.-based Air Artists studio, which was founded by Harries.  Among them is a different inflatable pig that was featured at Pink Floyd concerts after Roger Waters left the group.

Other items include a giant pig’s head featured at Waters’ historic 1990 concert at the Berlin Wall, a cast of an inflatable Babylonian woman that appeared onstage during served The Rolling Stones’ Bridges to Babylon trek, and large figures of Queen’s Freddie Mercury and Brian May used during the group’s The Magic Tour in 1986.

You can check out a full list of items up for bid by visiting Auctions.Durrants.com or The-Saleroom.com.

On the cover of Animals, “Algie,” which was designed by Waters, appears attached to two of Battersea Power Station’s massive smokestacks.

As the story goes, during the photo shoot for the record the helium-filled prop broke free of its moorings and floated thousands of feet in the air, causing flights at London’s Heathrow Airport to be canceled.  The flying pig eventually touched down at a farm in Kent, England, and was retrieved, repaired and used to finish the shoot.

Gella’s will feature live folk-rock band in September

11053917_803570319741083_8531607336674320306_oGella’s Diner and Lb Brewing will feature live folk-rock music next month in Hays.

Von Strantz, whose music is described as folk ’n’ roll, will perform at the downtown Hays establishment, 1117 E. 11th, at 8 p.m. Sept. 17. There is no cover.

“The sound of Von Strantz is described simply as folk n’ roll, akin to the tradition of Over the Rhine and the sacredness of The Vespers; the instrumentals stir the soul much like Mumford and Sons,” according to a news release.

Utilizing a variety of instruments such as the mandolin, violin, bass and cello, Von Strantz unites harmonies strung together by commanding and soulful lyrics. With story-sharing as their passion, Von Strantz invites their audience into the emotion of each piece. Von Strantz is storytellers, an ebb and flow of two different musicians, exploring the dark and emerging with hope.

Lb Brewing is located at 117 E 11th St.

Who better to develop a new slasher movie than the man known as Slash?

The rocker will produce a horror film with Revolver Picture Company that will be a throwback to 1980s flicks like Halloween and Friday the 13th, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The plot has not yet been revealed.

Slash got involved after meeting with some folks at Revolver. He tells The Hollywood Reporter, “They had an idea that tied in perfectly with a theme that I was working on at the time.”

“From there, together with [screenwriter]Brian Sieve, I think we developed something awesome.”

The goal is that the movie will evolve into a franchise.

Slash isn’t new to the horror film genre — he produced 2013’s Nothing Left to Fear.

KFIX Rock News: Inflatable Pig From Pink Floyd’s “Animals” Album Cover Being Auctioned Next Month

Pink-Floyds-Animals-Album-CoverOne of most famous props in the annals of rock history is about to go under the hammer.

The giant inflatable pig tied to London’s Battersea Power Station that appeared on the cover of Pink Floyd’s 1976 album, Animals, will be auctioned off next month as part of a U.K. memorabilia sale.

The floating pig, nicknamed “Algie,” is among the many props created for various rock acts by the Halesworth, U.K.-based Air Artists studio that will be offered for sale September 15 via Durrants auction house.

Other items going up for bid include an inflatable Babylonian woman that appeared onstage during served The Rolling Stones’ Bridges to Babylon Tour, a giant pig head featured at Roger Waters’ historic 1990 concert at the Berlin Wall, and props used by AC/DC, Bon Jovi and Iron Maiden.

Creator Mark Harries tells BBC News he decided to sell the props — which for years had been stored in his workshop — because he changed his artistic direction toward sculpture rather than inflatable pieces.

“I’m sad to see them go but they very rarely see the light of day and so I would be quite happy for someone else to take them for a walk,” the artist says.  “The clear-out has been quite cathartic and brought back a lot of memories, but I do feel I’ve been there and done that now, and it’s time to move on.”

Waters designed “Algie,” and a dramatic composite photo of the 40-foot prop moored to the huge power station served as the cover art for Animals.

During the photo shoot, the helium-filled “Algie” infamously broke free and floated thousands of feet in the air, causing flights at London’s Heathrow Airport to be canceled.

The flying pig eventually touched down at a farm in Kent, England, and was retrieved, repaired and used to finish the shoot.
