KFIX Rock News: Doobie Brothers Sue Cover Band Over “Confusingly Similar” Name

Doobie-Brothers-Logo_shadowIt seems The Doobie Brothers really do take the  band name quite seriously, case in point: the band is suing the group The Doobie Decibel System over trademark usage claiming the band’s name is “confusingly similar” to theirs, according to Billboard.

On Friday, Doobie Brothers Corp. and Doobro Entertainment sued the Northern California folk-rock cover duo-which consists of musicians JasonCrosby and Roger McNamee.

The band said it successfully trademarked the words “Doobie Brothers” and “Doobies” for musical performances in 1982.

The band is arguing that Crosby and McNamee’s use of “Doobie” in their band’s name exhibits “willful intent to trade on the fame and reputation, or to cause confusion, or to cause mistake, or to deceive consumers.”

They want the group to stop using the name DDS immediately and are seeking punitive damages for trademark infringement, false designation of origin and unfair competition.  They also are requesting a full accounting of the group’s earnings.

Crosby and McNamee are far from novice musicians. Crosby has played with Bob Weir, Eric Clapton andCarlos Santana while McNamee performs in the jam band, Moonshine and is the co-founder of prominent venture capital firms Silver Lake Partners and Elevation Partners, the latter he founded with U2’s Bono.

KFIX Rock News: Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons Discuss KISS/Scooby-Doo Animated Film

kissinA new feature animated film titled Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery was released Friday on DVD and Blu-ray.  Some KISS fans may feel that pairing the famous rockers with the cartoon canine seems a bit odd, but band members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons beg to differ.

“KISS is iconic.  Scooby-Doo is iconic.  KISS is iconic in the same way that Batman or Superman are, so to take two worlds and combine ’em together allows both to be true to themselves,” Stanley tells ABC Radio.

The singer/guitarist adds, “I mean, we’re a rock band, but we’re way more than a rock band.  Rock bands are so pigeonholed and so afraid to walk outside of their comfort zone.  KISS isn’t like that, so for us this was something that seemed very natural.”

Simmons has a similar opinion, maintaining that a KISS collaboration with Scooby-Doo “makes perfect sense.”

The bassist also points out, “Anything that’s iconic, that stands the test time is classic, and we only get involved in that,” noting that KISS previously has worked with such other animated franchises as SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly Oddparents and Family Guy, not to mention being the subject of various comic books over the years.

The plot of Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery centers around a big Halloween concert that the band is scheduled to play at a KISS-themed amusement park called KISS World.  Unfortunately, a mysterious character named the Crimson Witch is scaring off visitors to the park, which could lead to the show being cancelled.  Enter Scooby-Doo and the rest of the young Mystery Inc. gang, who proceed to join forces with KISS to see if they can foil the evildoer’s sinister plan.

The movie includes six classic KISS songs, and features voice cameos from such stars as Garry Marshall,Penny Marshall, Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes, Pauley Perrette and Darius Rucker.

Stanley says the animated flick compares favorably to another feature-length KISS project, the campy live-action 1978 TV movie KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park.

“This is much more cohesive, and that was quite disjointed and kind of [had] a lot of loose ends,” Paul maintains.  “So this is much more a finished product, and…we’re just really pleased with it.”

In other KISS news, Simmons tells ABC Radio that the band is writing new material, which may or may not result in a new studio album.

“Some of us think there’s a new record coming, some of us don’t,” he says. “So stay tuned.”  Drummer Eric Singer, meanwhile, adds, “Some of us hope there’s a new record coming.”

KFIX Rock News: Keith Richards Says Rolling Stones Will Start Recording A New Album At The “End of the Year”

stonesinWhile Keith Richards recently announced plans to release a new solo album, Crosseyed Heart, in September, he now has revealed that The Rolling Stones are planning to roll into a recording studio soon.  In a new interview with U.K. magazine Mojo, the guitar legend says the band intends to hit the road for more tour dates this year and, after that, will begin work on a new album.

During the interview, which will appear in the upcoming issue of Mojo, Richards reports that The Stones started discussing a new recording project before they launched their recent wrapped Zip Code Tour of North America.

“I know Mick [Jagger] wants to record again [because] he blurted it out in a meeting: ‘It’s about time we went back and recorded,'” Keith tells the magazine.  “I was like, ‘We’re here to talk about a tour, right?’  So that will be interesting.  End of the year.”

Richards also discusses his upcoming solo effort in the new Mojo issue, which hits newsstands in the U.K. this Tuesday, July 28.  Crosseyed Heart, which is Keith’s first solo studio album since 1992’s Main Offender, will be released on September 18.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Trainwreck’ is anything but

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

Movies, TV shows and novels like to dance with the line, “It’s what people do.” I’ve always liked it. It’s powerful and consistently interesting to see how the setup line changes the result. Perhaps my favorite is the adaptation from the tremendous BBC series “Sherlock” – where the title character says, “He could have died” and Moriarty yells back, “That’s what people DO!”

What people do. What do people do? That wonderfully confusing idea is at heart of the new Amy Schumer comedy, “Trainwreck.” Like a lot of comedies that have a major romantic element, the main characters come from very different worlds. Instead of one being named Capulet and the other Montague: the leads in “Trainwreck” meet in the middle from opposite ends of the “It’s what people do” spectrum. Which is a life better lived? A life in service to others? A life in service to oneself? In my experience, these concepts are moving targets.

“Trainwreck” isn’t, in and of itself, a major philosophical investigation. It’s a very strong, well-written comedy that fields innately interesting characters and let’s the relative distance between them determine the strength of their bond (I’m proud of that line, it has science, it has poetry and it even has relation to “Ant-Man”). Amy Schumer absolutely shines. For mainstream audiences, Schumer is a relatively new name. Here are the highlights you need to know: she’s brilliant, she’s hysterical, she’s not afraid to offend people and she doesn’t take prisoners.

Trainwreck_poster

The other members of the cast are all strong in their own right and fit very well into Schumer’s comedy snow globe. LeBron James, as in the basketball player LeBron James, is an absolute delight. I, better than most, understand how odd that sentence sounds, but LeBron is genuinely very funny. His comedic timing is impeccable. Before seeing the movie I, like many people, groaned at the idea of another athlete cameo. By the end of the film, I found myself looking forward to LeBron scenes. I am truly very impressed and would welcome more LeBron James in movies.

I think “Trainwreck” is my favorite comedy of the year, it’s definitely my favorite comedy of the summer. For a movie called “Trainwreck,” it certainly brings out the best from all parties involved, sometimes tremendously, sometimes surprisingly, but always effectively.

KFIX Rock News: Bruce Springsteen Plays Surprise Show At New Jersey Bar

springsteenstand

Bruce Springsteen surprised the crowd at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, New Jersey, on Saturday with a impromptu performance that lasted nearly two hours, according to NJ.com.

The 65-year-old rocker proved he’s still The Boss, according to the website, which notes he joined the scheduled band, Joe Grushecky and The Houserockers, for a 15-song set that included the Springsteen classics “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “Racing in the Street” and “The Promised Land.”

NJ.com reports Springsteen, who was “in a great mood and loose,” played to a packed house and even drew a huge crowd of people that watched from outside the bar. He dedicated his final song of the night, “Light of Day,” to them, announcing, “People out on the street, this is for you!”

This was his first Asbury Park bar performance since early in 2012.

Springsteen appeared three weeks ago on stage at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey with Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, and performed two songs.

MOVIE REVIEW: ’Ant-Man’ offers full-sized thrills

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

Marvel’s indisputable talent is its consistent ability to make ideas that have no right to work, work. “Guardians of the Galaxy” should not have worked. It was ludicrous, but it satisfied fanboys and, more importantly, it set a great many hearts to racing. Everyone knows Batman and Spider-Man are big, popular comics that translate to big, popular movies. Amusingly, prior to the 2008 theatrical release of the first “Iron Man” movie, the Iron Man character was second string, at best. Marvel Studios uncompromising vision turned Iron Man, an untested character, into a hero to rival Batman and Superman, no small feat.

In a very similar fashion, a superhero movie about “Ant-Man” shouldn’t work. It just sounds stupid. A hero who can shrink to the size of an insect and control ants? I love this stuff and that even sounds lame to me. Well folks, Marvel has done it again. “Ant-Man” shouldn’t work, but it does. Resoundingly.

Every pun intended, “Ant-Man” is much smaller than other Marvel movies. It’s more intimate, in some respects, it starts at its own beginning and finds its burgeoning position within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perhaps “Ant-Man’s” greatest triumph is its novel twist on the superhero movie.

_1432865109

Perspective is a rare and valuable commodity and it’s a wonderful byproduct of a character that can change his size. This isn’t Cap fighting the good fight, this isn’t Iron Man being brilliant or Thor being heroic. This is a sorry about a father, an ex-convict desperately trying to turn his life around. What makes the story heroic, what makes it a story worth telling is the unique solution to age old problems. This is a heist movie with a climax that takes place on a little girl’s toy train set.

Paul Rudd, who plays protagonist Scott Lang/Ant-Man is primarily known as a comedian, which might not seem like a natural fit; however, I’m pleased to report that it’s an inspired casting choice. He does action well, he does fear well and, of course, he does comedy well. I am very excited to see Rudd’s involvement in upcoming team-based Marvel movies such as “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers 3.”

“Ant-Man” really resonates, partially because of Marvel’s secret sauce and partially because it’s so different than “typical” superhero movies. I can say, with certainty, that “Ant-Man” is worth your time and is definitely on my list to see again.

KFIX Rock News: AC/DC Drummer Phil Rudd Back In Jail

acdcin2SYDNEY (AP) – AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd is due in court today after he was arrested again in New Zealand.

Police will not say why they arrested Rudd at his home on New Zealand’s North Island on Saturday night.

Rudd’s lawyer confirms the arrest and says his client is in jail, but he refused further comment.

Two weeks ago, Rudd was sentenced to eight months of home confinement after he pleaded guilty to drug possession and threatening to kill a former employee.

Judge Thomas Ingraham had told Rudd he would “stone-cold guarantee” that if Rudd breached the terms of his home detention, he would end up in prison.
