KFIX Rock News: Def Leppard Guitarist Announces New Blues Project

DeltaDeep_630_042415Def Leppard lead guitarist Phil Collen is exploring his passion for blues in a new project, Delta Deep, whose self-titled debut is scheduled for release in June.

Delta Deep features Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo, with vocals from Debbi Blackwell-Cook and drummer Forrest Robinson.

The album is peppered with guest stars galore, including Def Leppard lead singer Joe Elliot, Whitesnake’s David Coverdale, Sex Pistols/Manrazedrummer Paul Cook, and Girl/Manraze bassist Simon Laffy.

The idea for project dates back to 2012, when Collen and Cook — who’s the godmother of Collen’s wife, Helen — got together to sing blues classics in the guitarist’s home.

Soon after, all three began to write original music, and recorded the tracks in Collen’s home studio. Others joined the project in quick succession, and Robinson’s suggestion to get DeLeo in the lineup was the fit the group needed.

“We really wanted Robert in this band,” Collen says. “He had the added firepower of being the premiere pioneer and most “badass bass player” to come out of the alternative rock explosion.”

He adds of Blackwell-Cook, “When I hear Debbi sing, I can hear the pain.  She’s an incredibly beautiful 62-year-old black woman who has been through things and she can sing through her pain. Not everyone can do that and not everyone sounds like Debbi.

Delta Deep will be out June 23.

KFIX Rock News: Joan Jett Records Title Track For New Drew Barrymore Film

Not content to sit back and rest on her rock and roll laurels, newly minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joan Jett has recorded a song for the forthcoming film, Miss You Already.

The song is the title track to the movie — which focuses on the lifelong friendship of two women — and hits on the film’s themes of loss and the preciousness of memories in a razor-toothed surge of guitars with a hot chorus,” according to Rolling Stone.

It was written by Jett, guitarist Dougie Needles and Jett’s longtime manager Kenny Laguna. “I give her pop..She gives me menace,” said Laguna of the track.

Helmed by Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, the movie stars Drew Barrymore, Toni Collette, Dominic Cooper and Jacqueline Bissett.

Jett also spoke with Rolling Stone about sexism in rock. “People look at women differently,” Jett says. “Men are viable into old age. Women all of a sudden become matronly? C’mon, man!”

Jett — who is on the road with The Who through November — said a typical day off stage consists of doing “nothing.”  “If I can help it,” she said “I’d work at the animal shelter. Or I kick back on my royalties, just be out in nature.”

KHAZ Country Musi News: Blake Recommends Luke For A Job

khaz blake shelton luke bryan 20150421ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – If Blake Shelton ever takes a break from “The Voice,” he thinks Luke Bryan would be an excellent replacement. He’s just not sure that Bryan is as lazy as he is. Shelton says a musician has to give up touring to do the show, and after 15 years of being on the road, he was ready to sit in one spot for months at a time. Shelton keeps in touch with most of the people who have been on his team, so much that he feels like he’s adopting half of them. Shelton says he can’t be in the trenches with the contestants and just set them loose when the show ends

KHAZ Country Music News: Luke Bryan On Blake Rushing The Stage

khaz luke bryan blake shelton 20150421ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – If it seemed that Luke Bryan didn’t get his full moment in the spotlight after winning entertainer of the year at the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday, you’re right on target. Bryan says even though he had just won the big award, he was given only 18 seconds to make his speech. He says Blake Shelton rushing the stage to celebrate with him was Shelton’s way of cutting Bryan’s speech short, because the show was already running long. Bryan says he wouldn’t have wanted it any other way and calls Shelton’s move a “perfect situation altogether.”

KFIX Rock News: AC/DC Drummer Phil Rudd Pleads Guilty to Threatening to Kill and Drug Charges

Ac-dcphil-rudd (1)

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd apparently has admitted to doing some dirty deeds.  New Zealand’s ONE News reports that the 60-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer pleaded guilty to three criminal charges — including threatening to kill, and possession of marijuana and methamphetamine — Tuesday morning in a district court in his home of Tauranga, New Zealand.

According to ONE News, Rudd faces a maximum seven-year prison sentence for the threatening to kill charge, while the drug charges could result in a several-month sentence or a monetary fine.

The case has now been adjourned until June 26, and Rudd’s attorney, Craig Tuck, has announced that he plans to apply for a discharge without conviction for the rocker, which, if granted, could mean no jail time for drummer.

Rudd was arrested in November of last year, and initially also was charged with being involved in a murder-for-hire plot, although that charge was quickly dropped.

It’s not clear what Phil’s future with AC/DC will be. The band has announced that Chris Slade, who previously was a member of the band from 1989 to 1994, will be behind the drum kit for the group’s 2015 Rock or Bust tour.

KFIX Rock News: Ozzy Osbourne & Bill Ward Duke It Out Online

sabbathmainUNDATED (AP) – Ozzy Osbourne’s response to Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward: “Stop playing the victim and be honest with yourself and our fans.”

Osbourne wrote a response on his website to Ward’s demand that Osbourne apologize for comments he made about Ward.

Osbourne says he cannot apologize because Black Sabbath knew Ward was not capable of making an album and doing a tour, so the band moved on without him.

Osbourne offers Ward’s hospitalizations in 2013 as proof, including one for shoulder surgery that would have derailed a tour.

Ward has already responded to Osbourne’s response, saying the shoulder surgery was elective, his health is fine and “sorry I can’t love you back, Oz.”

KHAZ Country Music News: 2015 ACM Award Winners

khaz 50th acm awards 20150409ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) – Miranda Lambert won four awards, including album and song of the year, but the singer lost the night’s top prize to Luke Bryan at Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards.

It was a repeat of the Country Music Association Awards in November, where Lambert won multiple prizes but lost the big award to Bryan.

“Listen guys, what an amazing night of music,” an excited Bryan said onstage after winning the fan-voted award. “Thank you to my wife, my kids … my fans, country radio.”

Lambert was the sole female nominated for entertainer of the year; other nominees included Garth Brooks, Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line, who won two awards Sunday at the AT&T Stadium.

Though she lost the top prize – again – Lambert was the queen of the night. She was on a red-hot winning streak – and she even rocked a red-hot bustier when she performed “Little Red Wagon.”

Lambert won her fourth album of the year, her sixth female vocalist of the year and her third single record of the year (she won twice this year as a performer and songwriter of “Automatic.”)

“I don’t even realize what’s happening tonight,” Lambert said. “I love my job so much. I will never not love my job.”

Lambert, a fashion favorite in the last year, wowed again in a flowing, plunging dress on the red carpet. Inside the venue, she wore white pants and a white top with a black sheer center. She also accepted the 50th Anniversary Milestone Award, given to her by Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara (Lambert wrote a song for their new film, “Hot Pursuit.”)

It was also a memorable night for Taylor Swift, who made it a family affair.

The singer was one of seven recipients of the Milestone Award, and a video package highlighting her career and success played before her mother, who recently announced she is battling cancer, presented her daughter with the award.

“I am a very proud mom,” said Andrea Swift, who also called her daughter “brave enough to explore her musical curiosity.”

“I am so happy I learned how to write songs in a town like Nashville,” said Swift, who released her first full-blown pop album, “1989,” last year.

The former country singer, who sat next to her father Scott Swift, danced along in typical form, especially when Lambert and Martina McBride performed.

Other recipients of the anniversary honor include Brooks, Reba McEntire, Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney and George Strait, who performed near the beginning of the show.

The ACMs kicked off paying tribute to veteran Merle Haggard by Keith Urban and Eric Church, while Strait sang “All My Ex’s Live in Texas” – appropriate for the awards show celebrating its 50th anniversary in a new location, the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Shelton and Bryan were playful as hosts – and they even played some football. Shelton asked Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo to throw the ball to Bryan, who was wearing gloves.

“This isn’t one of those deflated balls?” Shelton said after Bryan caught the ball, referencing the deflategate scandal earlier this year.

Shelton announced that the – usually held in Las Vegas – set a Guinness World Record for most attended live awards show of all-time.

Shelton and Bryan performed, too. Christina Aguilera joined Rascal Flatts and Nick Jonas sang with the country duo Dan + Shay.

Brooks’ performance of “All American Kind” marked a sentimental moment since it included U.S soldiers standing proudly.

“I’d like … to thank all of our men and women in the armed forces … protecting our freedom,” Brooks said when he received the Milestone Award from Taya Kyle, the wife of the late “American Sniper” Chris Kyle.

Lee Brice sang some of “Forever and Ever, Amen” and then called out Randy Travis, who was sitting in the audience and earned a rousing applause. Brice won single record of the year for “I Don’t Dance,” which he also produced.

“This is insane. Thank y’all so much,” he said.

Little Big Town had one of the night’s top performances when they slowed things down with their recent hit, the semi-controversial “Girl Crush.” They won vocal group of the year, and Cole Swindell won new artist of the year.

Dierks Bentley, who had seven nominations, won video of the year for “Drunk on a Plane”; Aldean won male vocalist of the year.

Other performers included Brooks & Dunn, Braid Paisley and Alan Jackson.
