KHAZ Country Music News: Eric Church Breaks Two Records in Chicago

khaz eric church 20140410CHICAGO (AP) – Eric Church broke two records in Chicago for playing for a lot of people — and playing for a lot of happy people. CMT.com reports Church set an attendance record for his show at the Allstate Arena on Friday with an attendance of 18,626 people. That sets a new record for the arena. The previous record-holder was Vicente Fernandez, who had 18,452 fans in 2007. The other record: the amount of whiskey consumed. The arena reports it went through 55 gallons of Jack Daniel’s during the show.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘Insurgent’ goes unnoticed

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

It’s well documented that I am not a big fan of the flood of dystopian young adult novel series being made into movie trilogies/quadrilogies these days. It’s a shot-out genre with little or no innovation and it just won’t stop. The latest offender is “The Divergent Series: Insurgent,” the follow up to last year’s “Divergent.”

Take a quick second to think about every movie trope you’ve ever encountered. Got it? The “what appears to be real life is actually a dream,” the “let’s fight without our guns,” the “idiotic and overly-dramatic use of futuristic technology” and the list goes on and on. The punchline is: there all in here. While watching “Insurgent” I honestly wondered to myself if the movie was trying to set some type of trope record.

Granted, I am not the target audience – far from it. That said, the film, in and of itself, is bloated by everything from its intentionally one-dimensional characters, to its incredibly simplistic plot which is poorly disguised as depth, to the consistently terrible writing where every character has a whole pack of “deus ex machina” (a contrived plot device where an unexpected power or event saves a seemingly un-savable situation) get out of jail free cards in their pockets.

Perhaps most egregious is “Insurgent’s” fondness for administering mind-altering chemicals to its characters and never once using any type of disinfectant. Time and time again people are stuck with needles or shot with drug-injecting ball things and I was severely distracted by my genuine concern that everyone in this entire civilization was going to suffer from widespread infection and disease. Also, just a quick physics note, shooting a gumball-sized metal projectile at assault rifle velocity would probably take off heads, not gently put people to sleep.

The above paragraph is “Insurgent’s” greatest failure. The entire movie I was more concerned about the poor medicinal practices and the physics of the weapons than I was about the safety or success of the main characters. That’s no bueno.

KFIX Rock News: Vince Neil Of Motley Crue Sues Over Control Of His Social Media Accounts

Vince Neil is suing an Oregon social media consultant whom he claims has made unauthorized posts on his social media accounts.

The Motley Crue frontman alleges in the suit, filed last Friday in Las Vegas, that Kristy Sinsara has been using his social media accounts to promote herself, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The lawsuit notes that Neil gave Sinsara access and control of his social media accounts as part of an agreement he says he terminated late last year. However, Sinsara allegedly failed to relinquish control of the accounts in the ensuing weeks.

For her part, Sinsara tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal she’s given Neil the password to his Twitter account, and has provided the password to his Facebook account to his tour manager, Slaughter bassist Dana Strum. She says she hasn’t posted anything on Neil’s Facebook page since January.

Sinsara believes the lawsuit may be the result of a dispute she has with Neil’s girlfriend.

KFIX Rock News: Bon Jovi Named Favorite New Jersey Rocker Over Springsteen In Poll

It was a close race, but Jon Bon Jovi beat Bruce Springsteen for the title of favorite New Jersey rocker in a recent poll.  The poll surveyed readers of app.com, the website of the Asbury Park Press, and more than 20,000 votes were cast.

The Boss quickly took the lead when the poll began March 6, but Bon Jovi started catching up around the 13,000 vote mark.

The last day of voting was Friday and a well-timed tweet from Jon’s brother, Matthew Bongiovi, may have pushed him to victory.  “Let’s finish this!!” Matt tweeted.  At the time, Jon was behind by about 50 votes.

In the end, Bon Jovi won by a tight margin.  He received 11,140 votes, or 50.66 percent, while Bruce tallied 10,851 votes, or 49.34 percent.

Whether you’re satisfied with Bon Jovi’s win or not, the poll made it clear that New Jerseyans are passionate about their music.

“There’s something unique and endearing and cool about the fact that New Jersey even thinks about who its favorite rockers are,” Matty Karas, the music curator for REDEF, told the Asbury Park Press.  “I think that says something about how much New Jerseyans in general think about, and identify with, their home state.”

Stevie Nicks has been a strong supporter of American troops over the years, and now she’s being honored for her efforts.

The Fleetwood Mac singer will receive the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2015 USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore 33rd Annual Awards Dinner on March 24.

The event salutes Medal of Honor recipients, as well as celebrities and citizens who have shown their dedication to U.S. troops.

And Nicks has certainly done her share in service to injured soldiers.  She holds the record for the most hours spent over a five-year period visiting combat-wounded service members as part of USO-Metro’s celebrity handshake tours.

Stevie also has donated hundreds of music-filled iPods to veterans recovering at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and Bethesda National Naval Medical Center.  She was so affected by her hospital visits that it inspired her to write the song “Soldier’s Angel,” which was released in 2011.

In addition to receiving her award, Nicks will be presenting the USO-Metro’s Col. John Gioia Patriot Award to poet and essayist Seema Reza.  Other honorees include Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and author-filmmaker Sebastian Junger.

The awards dinner will take place at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia, where attendees will include senior government and military leaders, celebrities and community leaders.
