KFIX Rock News: Who-Related Documentary Trailer Released

whoinThe first official trailer for Lambert & Stamp, the recent documentary about the two men who discovered, mentored and managed The Who, has premiered at Yahoo.com.

The film tells the story of how a pair of aspiring filmmakers, Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, helped guide The Who from popular local London club band to international superstardom after initially choosing the group as the focus of a planned movie about England’s flourishing music scene.

The two-minute preview features brief interview segments with Stamp and surviving Who members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey, as well as various archival clips of the band performing during the early part of its career.

During one part of the trailer, Stamp, who died of cancer in 2012 at age 70, explains that he and Lambert had very little knowledge of the music business when they decided to manage The Who.  In another segment, he shares his first impressions of the band members, noting, “They weren’t handsome, there weren’t nice.  They were sort of like misfits.”

Townshend, meanwhile, is seen musing about what unlikely partners Lambert and Stamp made, while Daltrey declares, “Their ideas were fantastic, and that’s all I cared about.”

The trailer also includes a brief clip of Stamp expressing his frustration about how the band eventually wound up suing him and Stamp for mismanagement at time when The Who was among the biggest rock acts in the world.  Sadly, Lambert was only 45 when he died in 1981 of a brain hemorrhage after years of substance abuse.

Lambert & Stamp opens in New York and Los Angeles on April 3, and will move into additional theaters after that.  The Who also is scheduled to kick off the North American leg of its 50th anniversary tour that month, on April 15 in Tampa, Florida.

KFIX Rock News: Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler Reportedly Recording Country Album

Steven Tyler has been spending a lot of time in Nashville in recent months writing new songs, and now some details have emerged about his upcoming music plans.

Sources tell Billboard that the Aerosmith singer has been recording a country album and is about to sign a solo deal with the Nashville-based Big Machine Label Group.

An insider revealed to Billboard that the Big Machine deal is expected to be finalized “before the summer.”

Interestingly, Tyler appeared on this past Wednesday’s episode of American Idol as part of a taped profile of the label’s president, Scott Borchetta, who is serving as this season’s mentor for the Fox singing competition.

Other Big Machine artists include such stars as Taylor Swift,Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire and The Band Perry.

According to Billboard, one of the Nashville songwriters Tyler has been collaborating with is Brett James, who’s helped pen hits for McBride and Carrie Underwood.

Steven’s country album may be released as early as this November, but it more likely will arrive sometime in 2016.

Tyler has been involved in several country-related collaborations in recent years, including duetting with Brad Paisley on last year’s CMA Country Christmas special and teaming up with Underwood for a 2012 episode of CMT Crossroads.

He and Underwood also sang together on “Can’t Stop Lovin’ You,” a song featured on Aerosmith’s latest album, 2012’s Music from Another Dimension.

REVIEW: ‘Cinderella’ is worthy of its crown

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

First of all, I want to apologize for missing my review of “Chappie” last week. I believe that I’ve only missed one review in my three year tenure of writing movie reviews. The punchline would have been: skip it, it has an interesting concept that is mired in terrible writing and is almost entirely unlikeable.

“Cinderella” is a story that needs no introduction. Perhaps much more accurately, it’s the latest Disney movie to be on the receiving end of a reintroduction.

Kenneth Branagh, the director of “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit” and “Thor” and; amusingly, the actor who played Gilderoy Lockhart in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” helms this live-action remake to good effect. Branagh has an eye for conveying the “air of nobility.” It’s a subtle distinction indicated by how characters carry themselves. For a story like “Cinderella,” the distinction of what nobility is, where it comes from and how it impacts the world is a great asset in an effort to add a more human element to such a classic fairytale.

Relative newcomer Lily James shines as the titular character “Cinderella.” The roots of the “Cinderella” fairytale are still solidly ensconced in outmoded notions when it comes to gender roles. That said, this latest adaptation does move the needle in the right direction, James’ performance as Cinderella is both strong and kind, perhaps not in equal measure, but she is so much more than a pretty face.

Conversely, Richard Madden, who played Robb Stark in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” is spectacular as the Prince. The interactions between Cinderella and the Prince have more substance to them than what I remember of the original Disney animated feature.

I enjoyed my time watching “Cinderella.” It moves a little slowly in places and I am very unhappy that Cate Blanchett gets top billing just because she’s the biggest name. I understand that’s how the cinema industry works, (and I love Cate Blanchett) but it’s upsetting to watch the credits role and read – “Cinderella” – “Starring” – “Cate Blanchett.” I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Lily James who plays the film’s namesake to at least have her name show up first. Also, as my wife, Renee, pointed out, the dress is the wrong shade of blue. Other than those small annoyances, “Cinderella” is a worthy remake of a timeless classic.

KFIX Rock News: Ace Frehley Discusses Why He Left KISS

ace guitar

Founding KISS guitarist Ace Frehley is preparing to head Down Under next month for a tour of New Zealand and Australia in support of his recent solo album, Space Invader.

In advance of the trek, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer was interviewed by Australia’s Today show this week and candidly revealed his reasons for leaving his famous band in the early 1980s.

“I quit because I started abusing substances and alcohol,” he told the Today interviewer.

“And I also wasn’t agreeing with the direction of the way the band was going.  You know, we had that big hit [the disco-influenced] ‘I Was Made for Loving You’ and I’m more of a blues-based rock guitar player.”

Frehley went on to explain that after he exited KISS, “there was a sigh of relief, because…I just thought I was gonna end up being a statistic.”  The 63-year-old rocker added, “By the grace of God, I’m here today, clean sober eight years, and life’s never been better.”

He also talked about his relationship with his ex-band mates, insisting that there isn’t as much bad blood as people might think.

“The press makes it out that we all hate each other and there’s all this rivalry and jealousy and, you know, there really isn’t,” he maintained.  “I mean, when we were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year, we all got along famously.”

Ace also mentioned that while he was mixing Space Invader, he had an amicable phone conversation with Gene Simmons.

“We were chatting for 25, 30 minutes,” Frehley revealed.  “He wouldn’t let me off the phone.  He was reminiscing about the ’70s.”

Frehley’s Down Under tour kicks off April 24 in Wellington, New Zealand, and will run through a May 7 show in Mount Lawley, Australia.  Ace also has a series of European shows scheduled in June.

KFIX Rock News: Mick Fleetwood Hoping Fleetwood Mac Will Release New Album

fleetinWill Fleetwood Mac release a new album with longtime singer & keyboardist Christine McVie?  That’s a question on the minds of a lot of the band’s fans.

It’s no secret that the group has started amassing some material for a possible new record, but founding drummer Mick Fleetwood admits it may be a “couple of years” before he and his band mates will have the chance to complete the project since they’re currently focused on touring and will be for some time.

“This whole touring stuff is getting sort of totally, in a good way, out of control,” Fleetwood tells ABC Radio.  “We’re going all over the world now, so we don’t quite know how we’re gonna finish this [album] out.”

Fleetwood Mac is in the middle of its second North American tour leg since Christine McVie officially rejoined the band last year.  The current trek is scheduled to run through an April 14 concert in the Los Angeles area, and that will be followed by a European outing that runs from late May until the middle of July.  The group also is expected to visit other parts of the world before wrapping up the tour.

As for the new music Fleetwood Mac has been preparing, Mick tells ABC Radio, “We’re building up this whole sort of dossier of material, a glut of stuff.”  He explains that singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham “has a great chunk of wonderful songs, [most of which are] pretty flushed out and finished,” adding that the band also has “been in the studio with Christine in months gone by [and that] worked out amazingly well.”

Fleetwood says the only element that really is missing from the project is some new original songs from Stevie Nicks.  For her part, Nicks told ABC Radio late last year that she was unsure whether, after the band wrapped up its tour, she would be willing to keep her solo career on hold and “sign up for another year of making a record.”

And what are Mick’s feelings about the chances for a new Fleetwood Mac album?  “I hope it happens,” he says.  “My inclination is, the music will not be wasted.  It will come out one way or another.  And I truly hope, and I quietly believe it will be Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie will do some lovely stuff and within the next couple of years we will get that done.”

Here are the remaining dates on Fleetwood Mac’s current North American tour:

KHAZ Country Music News: “Songs and Stories” by John Berry

khaz john berry 20150312NASHVILLE, Tenn. – His music stands as a soundtrack of what was being played on Country Radio in the 1990s, and two decades later, John Berry is breathing new life into his heartfelt lyrics with the release of Songs and Stories, a program style book in which the veteran performer talks about the meaning of some of his favorite songs – from his own pen, as well as others.

The book begins with “Standing On The Edge Of Goodbye,” which the South Carolina native shares a story about a conversation he had with another friend who sought John’s marital advice- fortunately the couple is still together. 2015 marks twenty years since the release of the single, which peaked at No. 1 on the Radio & Records Country Singles chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Country Singles chart. Other Berry radio staples included in the book include “If I Had Any Pride Left At All” and “Your Love Amazes Me,” which earned the soulful singer his first chart-topper in 1994.

But, Songs and Stories is about much more than just simply hit records. Take, for example, “Salvation,” a song that was included on his 1999 Lyric Street album Wildest Dreams, and actually became a favorite of many truck drivers going to and from their destinations at night. There’s his touching story of “O Holy Night,” and the effect it has had on his family – as well as “Annie’s Song,” the epic 70s ballad from John Denver that served as such an inspiration to Berry. He also talks about leaving the backstage area following a Denver show much too early – which still stands as one of his biggest regrets.

Also included in the collection are rare photos of John, wife Robin, and their family, as well as his father Jim and mother Marie, who both figure prominently into his thoughts on “Forty Again.”

Songs and Stories will be available via the singer’s web site, www.JohnBerry.com
