REVIEW: ‘Big Hero 6’ is slightly under-inflated

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

Since I was able to see an early screening of “Dumb and Dumber To” and have already written a review of its pleasingly dumb proceedings (5 of 6 – stupid humor that both pays homage to and is appropriately derivative of the original), I thought I would double back and review “Big Hero 6” from two weeks ago.

“Big Hero 6” is a Disney film based upon Marvel characters produced by Disney Animation Studios. While Marvel movies are now listed in the same breath as the “Harry Potters,” “James Bonds,” and “Star Wars” of the cinematic world, Disney animation has been hit or miss for the past couple of years. “Big Hero 6” attempts, and is moderately successful, at taking the best of Disney storytelling and the best of Marvel storytelling and combining it into a compelling animated feature.

On the Disney front, “Big Hero 6” needed to sell the tender “boy and his dog” story that we all melt so easily at. For a story set in an odd, technologically advanced, Asian-inspired version of San Francisco (San Fransokyo), the dog in question is an inflatable, lovable robot named Baymax. Paring the protagonist with a partner that isn’t an animal is not unprecedented, but it does raise the difficulty factor for the bond that needs to be created between boy and dog and the pair and the audience. While occasionally moving, the bond between Hiro (the hero and main protagonist of the story, get it?) and Baymax never truly takes on a life of its own and can’t hold a candle to the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless from “How to Train Your Dragon.”

On the Marvel front, the action is witty, fast-paced and entertaining. Unfortunately, however good the animation is, it misses the mark for true greatness by lacking the x-factor that occasionally brings a tear to the eye – the incredibly subtle, almost throwaway moments, that define each character and raise the emotional stakes in the midst of the excitement.

For an example of what I mean by “x-factor” in this instance, please see the debut trailer for “Overwatch,” a new first-person shooter that was debuted at BlizzCon when I was in California. One of the many reasons I love Blizzard Entertainment is because they essentially made a six minute Pixar movie that some, myself included, might argue is better than “Big Hero 6” to announce a video game. http://youtu.be/FqnKB22pOC0. The moment when Tracer yells, “Winston!,” that’s x-factor – it’s exciting, but it’s emotionally compelling, she needs him, she wants to help save her friend.

“Big Hero 6” is a perfectly fine Disney film that is certainly well-marbled with Marvel. I enjoyed it, but it can’t live up to its first trailer and this isn’t the successor to “Frozen” that Disney Animation needed or wanted.

KFIX Rock News: Pink Floyd Will Reunite Only For Charity

floydNEW YORK (AP) – Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason says a reunion is not out of the question, but only for the right charity.

Mason says it would have to be “something similar to Live 8.”

In the meantime, fans will have to be happy with their new album, “The Endless River.”

It was created from out-takes of “The Division Bell” sessions, plus a bit of newly recorded music.

Mason says originally “The Division Bell” was going to be a double album.

He says “The Endless River” reminds him in parts of “A Saucerful of Secrets” because they have a tendency to take old ideas and rework them again.

KFIX Rock News: Robert Plant & Richard Branson Deny Nine-Figure Led Zeppelin Reunion Offer

robert plant in ccRobert Plant’s publicist says a report claiming that the singer turned down a hugely lucrative offer from U.K. mogul Richard Branson for Led Zeppelin to play a series of reunion shows is untrue.  According to U.K. newspaper The Guardian, the rep called the report, which was published in British tabloid The Mirror, “rubbish.”

The Mirror article claimed that a source close to the band said Branson offered to pay Led Zeppelin 500 million pounds, about $800 million, to re-form for 35 concerts in three different cities, and that all the band’s members agreed to the deal except for Plant, who tore up the contract in front of the shows’ promoters.

In addition, the source told The Mirror that proposed concerts were to have been held in New Jersey, Berlin and at London’s O2 Arena, and that Branson was planning to have a Virgin Airlines jet rechristened “The Starship” and use it to fly the band to the shows.

Interestingly, the link to the online version of the Mirror story is no longer active.

*******

bransonRobert Plant’s publicist says a report claiming the singer turned down a hugely lucrative offer from U.K. mogul Richard Branson for Led Zeppelin to play a series of reunion shows is untrue.

Now, Branson himself is denying it, saying, “As much as I love the band, there is absolutely no truth to the story.”

In a post on his Virgin corporate website, Branson writes, “I’ve been left dazed and confused by a story doing the rounds this week about us apparently offering Led Zeppelin £500 million to reform and carry out a tour. …I spoke to Robert Plant about the story, which he also confirmed is complete rubbish from his side too.”

“Robert told me he is very proud of his history and the band’s past, and has always had great respect and love for his work throughout his career. However, he really believes he must move on with his life and career today.”

Branson goes on to note how each Led Zeppelin member has their own successful careers “and should be respected in their own right. I’m proud of how so many artists from my generation, whether it is Led Zeppelin, Mike Oldfield or Peter Gabriel, are still being so creative and inventive. They have all moved on into exciting new phases, while still celebrating their incredible pasts.”

Branson concludes, “As Robert told me: “Look Richard, I just do things because I love them and I want to do more new things that I love.” I couldn’t agree more.”
