KFIX Rock News: Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi Writes Music For “CSI”

2744589356_af345ddefe_mTony Iommi is, of course, the legendary guitarist for Black Sabbath, which still keeps him busy, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have time for side projects.

In a post on his Facebook page, Iommi says he’s returning to the studio, and has recorded a piece for the TV show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

“People have been asking what exactly I’m doing at the moment, well I’m getting back in the studio having tried to make myself rest after the tours,” the statement reads.

“I’m writing, mostly just putting ideas down rather than complete songs.  I like to create all sorts of moods with my music and then decide later how they might be used.”

Iommi adds, “One specific piece though is for the CSI TV series that will be aired in the US on November 9th.  I was asked if I’d be interested so I had a look at the footage and came up with an idea they seemed to like.  It’s not very long but it was different working with images rather than just music, I’d certainly be up for doing more.”

This isn’t the first time Black Sabbath has joined forces with CSI.  The band performed their song “End of the Beginning” on the show’s season 13 finale, which aired May 15, 2013.

Iommi and Black Sabbath plan to record their 20th and final album next year, as well as embark on a final tour.

EARLY REVIEW: ‘Dumb and Dumber To’

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

It’s a rare occurrence that I’m able to see a film and write a review before the film is available to the general public. Thanks to the my membership in the AMC Stubs program, which is somewhat similar to rewards program currently at Starplex Cinemas in Hays, I was able to attend an early screening on Dumb and Dumber To” last week. This sequel to the 1994 comedy classic will come to theaters on Nov. 14.

Making a sequel to “Dumb and Dumber” is like getting the band back together. I understand how borderline sacrilegious this will sound, but making a sequel to “Dumb and Dumber” shares more than a few similarities with making a sequel to “The Shawshank Redemption.” The initial reaction to such thoughts is that it simply cannot be done. I maintain that a sequel to “Shawshank” cannot, and should not, be done; however, the Farrelly brothers have done the near-impossible and have made a “Dumb and Dumber” sequel that pays reverence to the original, while succeeding in its own right.

Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels reprise their roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne a full 20 years after the original film. That distance in time has done little to change the characters, and the filmmakers very wisely choose to keep the tone of the original and insert a new roster jokes. Too often comedy sequels try to up the ante but not only evolving the story but also end up evolving the style of comedy. “Dumb and Dumber To” strikes a perfect balance between keeping true to the spirit of the original while at the same time doing more than simply rehashing the existing jokes. Put plainly, “Dumb and Dumber To” tells new “Dumb and Dumber” jokes.

I admit to being worried during the first 10-15 minutes of this film. It’s a difficult story to get off the ground; but once the film gets up to speed the completely inane and largely successful humor is pervasive. Surprisingly, newcomer Rachel Melvin very admirably stands toe-to-toe with Carrey and Daniels and is the requisite breath of fresh air that could very well lead to a satisfying third installment.

Make no mistake, “Dumb and Dumber To” is stupid. It’s the kind of stupid that fans of the original will enjoy, but it is incredibly stupid nonetheless. There are a few flat moments, but the highest praise I can give is this: when word first reached my ears that a true sequel to one of my favorite comedies of all time was being made — this is the type of film that I was hoping for.

KFIX Rock News: Gregg Allman No Longer Being Sued Over Film Death

5880514910_7e18093e61_mSAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) – Gregg Allman has been dropped from a lawsuit by the family of a camera assistant who was killed while working on a movie of his life.

Lawyers for the parents of Sarah Jones say they are dismissing their claims against Allman.

They say after reviewing evidence in the case, it’s clear that Allman had no involvement in the decisions that led to Jones’ death.

Allman was an executive producer for the film “Midnight Rider.”

Jones was killed during the first day of filming in February when a freight train slammed into the crew on a railroad bridge in southeast Georgia.

Jones’ parents are still suing the film’s director, railroad company CSX Transportation and the owner of the property surrounding the crash site.

KFIX Rock News: Eric Clapton Records Tribute Song For Late Cream Band Mate, Jack Bruce

4776991068_42662b14b3_m
Eric Clapton has recorded a heartfelt tribute song he wrote for his Cream band mate Jack Bruce, who died Saturday at the age of 71.

The song, titled “For Jack, is posted on Clapton’s official website and Facebook page, and features Clapton humming a mournful tune as he accompanies himself on acoustic guitar.

Following Bruce’s passing, Clapton issued a statement that read, “It is with great sadness that we learned that Jack Bruce had passed away this morning at his home in England.”

“He was a great musician and composer, and a tremendous inspiration to me.”

Meanwhile, Cream drummer Ginger Baker, who had a historically contentious relationship with Bruce, released his own statement that was posted on his official fan club’s Facebook page.

“I am very sad to learn of the loss of a fine man, Jack Bruce,” Baker write.  “My thoughts & wishes are with his family at this difficult time.”

The last time Cream performed together was at two series of reunion shows held in May 2005 at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and in October of that year at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
