KFIX Rock News: Official Grateful Dead Documentary To Celebrate Band’s 50th Anniversary

deadinAn authorized documentary about The Grateful Dead will be truckin’ onto screens in conjunction with the jam band’s 50th anniversary.

Martin Scorsese will serve as an executive producer on the as-yet-untitled film, which will be directed by Amir Bar-Lev, whose credits include such critically acclaimed docs as The Tillman Story, My Kid Could Paint That and Fighter.

The movie will feature new interviews with all of The Grateful Dead’s main surviving members — guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann — as well as with many of the group’s friends, collaborators and musical associates.

The flick also will boast archival conversations with the band, as well as plenty of previously unreleased concert footage and behind-the-scenes clips.  The group’s longtime archivist, David Lemieux, will be the movie’s music supervisor, while Justin Kreutzmann, Bill’s son, will be one of the producers.

Weir, Lesh, Hart and Kreutzmann issued a joint statement about the project that reads, “Millions of stories have been told about the Grateful Dead over the years.  With our 50th Anniversary coming up, we thought it might just be time to tell one ourselves and Amir is the perfect guy to help us do it.”

The band members continue, “Needless to say, we are humbled to be collaborating with Martin Scorsese.  From The Last Waltz to George Harrison: Living in the Material World, from Bob Dylan to The Rolling Stones, he has made some of the greatest music documentaries ever with some of our favorite artists and we are honored to have him involved.”

They add, “The 50th will be another monumental milestone to celebrate with our fans and we cannot wait to share this film with them.”

Scorsese also commented on the film, saying, “The Grateful Dead were more than just a band.  They were their own planet, populated by millions of devoted fans.  I’m very happy that this picture is being made and proud to be involved.”

The Grateful Dead formed in 1965, and released their self-titled debut album in 1967.  No word yet on when the documentary might be released.

MOVIE REVIEW: ‘John Wick’ is efficient excitement

James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.
James Gerstner reviews movies for Hays Post.

The evolution of the movie gunfight is very interesting and would make for a spectacular 30-minute documentary. The oversized, muscle-bound commandos of the 1980s and early ’90s employed the spray and pray methodology of dispensing bad guys — imagine a bored 10-year-old watering a garden and replace the garden hose with a big machine gun.

Inconceivably, these heroes were able to hit their targets and live to grunt the tale. Fast-forward to the 2000s and cinematic heroes abandoned firing their weapons with wild abandon in favor of either unimaginable accuracy or the confounding stalemate, in which neither hero nor villain is capable of hitting anything but televisions and other assorted glass items for minutes on end.

One of the most notable things about “John Wick” is how violently it diverges from either of the previously described paradigms of gunplay. Much like the writing, directing and, to a lesser extent, the acting, the gunplay in “John Wick” is tight, efficient and relentless. There’s little wasted effort here.

The film and reborn action star Keanu Reeves (who is shockingly 50 years old) put on a spectacular show, and they do so with shockingly few lapses in physics or logic for the sake of cinematic flair. Too often in action movies, it’s very easy to want to yell at the screen, “Just shoot him already.”

In the time it would take you to say that, Reeve’s character John Wick would have already shot said nameless henchmen and moved on to bloodier pastures. That directness is refreshing and carries the film above the well-trod muck that is the ex-hitman revenge thriller.

If only “John Wick” could have held to its direct approach for the entirety of the film, I would have been tempted to throw an admittedly undeserved bone in the shape of a 6/6 its way. The film’s greatest flaw is that it folds just when it could have re-envisioned the action movie climax.

“John Wick” is visceral, violent and justifiably vain. This isn’t a movie for the kiddos or the squeamish, but for shoot-em-up fans, it’s a tightly wound coil that is a lot of fun to watch spring into action.

KFIX Rock News: Joan Jett Gets Honor From Kids

64974024_6de618bd15_mNEW YORK (AP) – Joan Jett’s philosophy for young rock-stars-to-be: count your blessings, welcome challenges, find your passions, honor your parents and be kind – but don’t take any guff from anyone.

Jett was honored as Rocker of the Year at the Little Kids Rock educational fundraiser in New York Thursday.

Jett says parts of her are very confident, but she’s also very shy.

Her parents bought her a $30 guitar when she was 13.

Her music teacher thought Jett was strange because she wanted to rock, so she figured out how to play it herself.
