UPDATE: 2 People Die After Fleeing Driver Crashes In Kansas

Two Kansas City, Mo., residents died when a vehicle fleeing from police crashed and caught fire in Kansas.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says five other people were thrown from the vehicle in the accident early Sunday in Kansas City, Kan.

The patrol identified the dead as Alexis Medina and Karla Robledo, both 18. The patrol says Medina was driving the sport utility vehicle. The five other teens, ranging in age from 15 to 19, were taken to hospitals.

The chase began when Roeland Park police tried to stop the vehicle early Sunday because it was being driven suspiciously. The driver lost control near an entrance to Interstate 35 and crashed into a pillar under the highway.

The occupants were ejected, and the vehicle caught fire and burned.

Kansas Man Dies In Nevada’s Ruby Mountains

Elko County sheriff’s deputies are investigating the death of a 34-year-old Kansas man who collapsed in a canyon in northeast Nevada’s Ruby Mountains.

The sheriff’s office says Jamon Michael Lewis of Olathe was reported to be on foot by himself on Wednesday and appeared to be disoriented before authorities found him unconscious in Soldier Creek Canyon.

A helicopter and ambulance were dispatched to the area between Lamoille Canyon and Secret Pass but paramedics were unable to revive him.

Deputies said in a statement Friday they suspect Lewis died of a heat stroke but won’t know until an autopsy is completed possibly next week.

Mexico Gives Money For Health Care Help In Kansas

Mexico’s government is helping promote a health-care screening and prevention program in southwestern Kansas.

The Mexican government has donated $31,000 to support a staff position with the Juntos Center for Advancing Latino Health. The Juntos program is an initiative of the University of Kansas Medical Center.

The staff member will help connect people to clinics in Liberal, Great Bend, Dodge City and Garden City where they can be screened for cancer, diabetes and other illnesses.

Juntos Center Director Dr. Paula Cupertino says the program brings the services of KU Medical Center to underserved communities in southwestern Kansas.

One Injured In I-70 Rollover Accident

A Kinsley woman was injured in a single vehicle accident along I-70 in Lincoln County, 17 miles west of Salina, Friday evening.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, 16-year-old Joseph Rennaker from Kinsley was driving a car west on I-70. For an unknown reason he veered off the road, and into the median. Rennaker then overcorrected, traveled back across the westbound lanes and into the north ditch. The car overturned and came to rest on its wheels.

A passenger, 37-year-old Traci Daubert of Kinsley, was transported to Salina Regional Health Center with injuries. Her condition was not immediately known.

Rennaker was not injured.

Authorities Arrest Four in Connection With Western Kansas Pharmacy Burglaries

Authorities investigating a string of burglaries at pharmacies in southwestern Kansas and northwest Oklahoma say they may have a break in the case.

KAKE-TV reports the Hodgeman County sheriff’s department arrested four people this week following reports of suspicious activity near a pharmacy in Jetmore, about 20 miles north of Dodge City.

Officials said the suspects are from the Dodge City area, and are in their mid-20s to early 30s. Two were arrested after a traffic stop and another while running from the scene. The fourth suspect was arrested when he tried to contact the others after they were taken into custody.

Investigators believe the thieves are responsible for at least 19 burglaries since January in which painkillers were stolen from pharmacies and sold on the street.

Authorities Attempting To Locate Suspect In Garden City Murder Case

Law enforcement officials have issued an attempt to locate for a suspect in a first degree murder case in Garden City.

Officials are searching for 26-year-old Miguel Angel Herrera who is believed to be driving a black 2003 Dodge Ram 1500.

Few details have been released on this case, but Kansas Bureau of Investigation records show Herrera is also a listed offender for a kidnapping case in 2010.

Fort Riley Soldier Killed In Afghanistan

A Fort Riley soldier from Idaho has been killed in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department says 24-year-old Pfc. Cody Moosman died Tuesday of injuries he suffered when his unit was attacked with small-arms fire in Paktika province, near the border with Pakistan. Republican Sen. Jerry Moran, of Kansas, says Moosman was on guard duty at the time.

He was assigned to B Company, 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

Moosman was from the southeastern Idaho town of Preston. His family issued a statement Wednesday saying he told them starting in the third grade that he had wanted to be in the Army. He enlisted in 2010.

Kansas Teen Awaits Word On Grandmaster Chess Status

An 18-year-old Kansas man who is the state’s top-rated junior chess player is awaiting word on whether he will be awarded the game’s highest honor for competitive players.

The Wichita-area native fulfilled requirements in March to become grandmaster-elect. Approval by the World Chest Federation in August would make him one of only a few U.S. chess players under 21 who have earned the title in the past decade.

The Wichita Eagle reports Conrad Holt is ranked No. 8 nationwide among junior chess players and will travel to Athens, Greece later this month to compete in his first World Junior Chess Championship. The federation ranks him 33rd among all active U.S. chess players.

The 2011 Andover High School graduate is studying physics at the University of Texas-Dallas.

Police: Fort Riley Soldier’s Tale Shows Bath Salt Dangers

Riley County police are using a recent incident involving a Fort Riley soldier to illustrate the potential dangers of using bath salts to get high.

Police received a call Monday morning about a man who was behaving strangely after apparently ingesting the substance, which drug agents say is being distributed in the area.

Police spokesman Lt. Josh Kyle told The Topeka Capital Journal officers arrived at the undisclosed Manhattan location and found the 22-year-old active military man “acting in a bizarre fashion.”

Kyle says the soldier initially acted as if he were drunk, but then became paranoid and started making strange religious statements.

Kyle says it doesn’t appear the man, who was taken to a hospital for treatment, would face any criminal charges.

Kansas Woman Says She Was Sexually Assaulted During Traffic Stop

A young woman says she was sexually assaulted along an eastern Kansas highway by a man claiming to be a law enforcement officer.

The Kansas City Star reports the 18-year-old woman told police a man driving a white Crown Victoria with lights on the front dash pulled her over before 10 p.m. Monday on U.S. 69 in Miami County.

She says the man was in his early to mid-20s, 5-feet-9 inches tall or shorter, and wearing a Polo-type shirt with a law enforcement badge sewn onto the chest. She also described him as having a mustache and goatee, with a gun and badge on his belt.

Osawatomie police are asking for anyone who might have witnessed the alleged assault to contact them at 913-755-2101.

Western Kansas Collision, Rollover Injures Grinnell Man, Oakley Teenager

A Grinnell man and Oakley teenager were injured in a Gove County accident Monday afternoon.

According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Sydney Parsons, 15, of Oakley was northbound on K216 about a half-mile south of Grinnell when she lost control of the 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix she was driving. Parsons went off the side of the roadway, then over-corrected into oncoming southbound traffic, where she collided with 1967 Ford Bronco driven by Loren Percival, 58, of Grinnell. In an attempt to avoid Parson, Percival entered ditch of K216 and rolled, with the vehicle coming to rest on its wheels, facing southwest.

Percival was transported to Logan County Hospital with disabling injuries.

Parsons was also transported to Logan County Hospital with possible injuries, her passenger, Gail Park, 60, was uninjured.

All parties were wearing their seat belts.

Kansas Veteran Wins $1M Powerball Prize, Tapes Ticket To Chest

A 34-year-old veteran from Kansas has claimed a $1 million Powerball prize after spending a restless weekend with the winning ticket taped to his chest in a plastic bag.

Matthew Packebush of Hutchinson won Powerball’s $1 million prize by matching the first five numbers in the lottery’s drawing Saturday.

The lottery says on its website that Packebush, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, discovered he had a winning ticket Saturday, but knew he had to wait until Monday to claim his prize. To avoid losing the ticket, Packebush put his winning ticket in a Ziploc bag and taped it to his chest.

Packebush says he plans to buy a new truck, start college funds for his three children, and invest the rest in real estate.
