One goal enough for UCO to down FHSU women’s soccer

FHSU Athletics

EDMOND, Okla. – The conference road swing in Oklahoma over the weekend was not kind to FHSU as it fell 1-0 at Central Oklahoma on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers dropped their second straight conference match and moved to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA. UCO improved to 7-4-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the MIAA.

A goal by Katie Killion in the 76th minute was all Central Oklahoma needed to pick up the win. UCO outshot the Tigers 12-5 in the match. Fort Hays State was only able to put three shots on net, all saved by Lexie Bates who moved to 2-1 on the season.

Fort Hays State’s Kristen Thompson produced five saves, but took the loss moving to 5-5 on the season. All five shots for FHSU were distributed among five different players.

The Tigers hit the road again next weekend for conference matches at Northwest Missouri State and Missouri Western. FHSU is currently in a tie for sixth place in the MIAA standings with Emporia State.

Rally comes up short for the Tigers; lose at Missouri Western

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Fort Hays State nearly erased a 12-point second half deficit, only to come up short 26-21 at Missouri Western Saturday afternoon. After hauling in a 41-yard catch and run to the Griffon seven yard line, Evan Jennings was unable to haul in a pass in the back of the endzone on the game’s final play.

Treveon Albert’s one-yard run with 11:36 to play pulled the Tigers within five. Albert completed 21 of 44 passes for 290 yards and touchdown while rushing for 76 and a score. Shaquille Cooper rushed for 114 yards and a score. He also had five catches for 45 yards and a touchdown. Andrew Flory hauled in seven catches for 118 yards but left with what appeared to be a severe knee injury.

Game Highlights

The Tigers had three chances to take the lead in the fourth quarter, coming up empty each time. Albert threw an interception following an FHSU fumble recovery and they went three-and-out after forcing a Griffon punt prior to their last possession.

Shaquille Cooper’s 67-yard touchdown run in the Tigers first possession gave them an early 7-3 lead. It was a lead they would keep until the Griffons scored 16 unanswered over the final six and-a-half minutes of the second quarter in building a 19-7 halftime lead.

The Tigers outgained the Griffons 479 yards to 441.

Both teams are now 4-2.

FHSU volleyball outlasts Emporia State in five sets

FHSU Athletics

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State battled to a five-set win against Emporia State on Friday evening,, moving to 11-8 overall and 3-4 in the MIAA. The win pulled FHSU even with Emporia State (8-8, 3-4 MIAA) in the conference standings and snapped a six-match losing streak to the Hornets. FHSU won by scores of 25-10, 20-25, 25-16, 23-25, 15-11.

Coach Kurt Kohler

Fort Hays State took advantage of a flat Emporia State effort, jumping to a 7-0 lead in the first set before ESU finally got on the board. The Tigers received little resistance from the Hornets throughout the set as they ran away with the set by 15. FHSU hit .333 in the opening set and held ESU to a -.229 hitting percentage.

The Hornets showed signs of life early in the second set, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before FHSU crawled back to tie the set 11-11. However, too many unforced errors would cost the Tigers in the set as they committed five service errors and five attack errors that were not blocked, giving away 10 points. It proved too much with just a .190 attack percentage in the set as the Hornets won 25-20 to tie the match.

FHSU rebounded with another convincing win in the third set, 25-16, outhitting ESU .267 to .077. However, another sluggish start in the fourth set was too much to overcome in a 25-23 loss. The Tigers rallied midway through the set and eventually led 20-19 before giving up three of the final four points of the set following a 22-22 tie. By the end of the fourth set, the Tigers were outhitting the Hornets .231 to .098 but found themselves in a 2-2 tie.

The fifth set was tight throughout as the teams battled to an 11-11 tie. Fort Hays State found the burst it needed at the right time, reeling off four straight points to win the match. A Sydney Dixon kill and Kailey Klibbe service ace fueled the run, coupled with two hitting errors by the Hornets.

Crystal Whitten had a tremendous double-double effort of 23 kills and 16 digs. She hit .409 in the match. Mallory Flagor had a double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs. Hannah Wagy had 47 assists, and Klibbe led in digs with 20. Wagy also had a double-double, adding 18 digs to her assist total. Megan Anderson provided nine blocks (1 solo, 8 assisted).

FHSU outhit ESU .238 to .106 in the match. Both teams produced 12 points off blocks, but FHSU led in kills 60-53 and in digs 83-78.

Josie Williams led ESU with 15 kills, while Shayla Cotman added 11. Sydney Hartman had 25 assists and Kelly Holden had 26 digs.

The Tigers take on No. 12 Washburn on Saturday (Oct. 10) at 2 pm in Hays. FHSU handed Washburn its first loss of the season two weeks ago. The Ichabods are coming off a 3-0 road loss to No. 16 Nebraska-Kearney on Friday evening. The Ichabods are now 17-2 overall, 5-2 MIAA.

She owns the top four single-game assist performances during the rally scoring era at FHSU, the best being 74 against Rockhurst in a 5-set match in 2003. She had three matches with 70 or more assists in her career. FHSU men’s soccer rallies for win at No. 14 Upper Iowa

FHSU Athletics

FAYETTE, Iowa – Falling down 2-0 by halftime, Fort Hays State assembled a furious second half rally with three goals to knock off 14th-ranked Upper Iowa 3-2 in a key MIAA match on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers improved to 8-3 overall, 2-1 in the MIAA, while the Peacocks dropped to 7-2-1 overall, 2-2 in the MIAA.

Upper Iowa built a 2-0 lead in the match as Ryan Pinkerton scored in the 20th minute and Joaquin Alonso in the 42nd minute, but the Tigers would fight back quickly in the second half.

FHSU drew a penalty kick in the 47th minute and Maurizio Costa capitalized on the opportunity, burying the shot just under the crossbar to make it 2-1. Later in the 73rd minute, the Tigers had a great counter attack as Damion Cooper found Paul Luna on a run in the middle of the field. Luna got to the ball just before the charging goalkeeper, chipped the ball up over the keeper, and tapped the ball in the net to equalize the match 2-2.

Just over seven minutes later in the 80th minute, David Lucio ripped a shot from the left side just outside of the box and it bent past the keeper near post to vault the Tigers into the lead, 3-2. Upper Iowa was only able to get two shots off the rest of the way.

Michael Yantz moved to 8-3 overall at goalkeeper with five saves. Ludin Gonzales went to 0-1 on the season with the loss, making one save in his first start of the season. The match was physical, mainly in the second half as a total of nine yellow cards were issued in the match (five to Upper Iowa, four to FHSU). The Peacocks doubled up the Tigers in shots, 14-7, but the Tigers were more efficient with their opportunities.

FHSU men’s soccer falls from top-25

FHSU Athltics

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the first time this season, Fort Hays State has been listed outside of the Top 25 of the NSCAA Division II Poll, released on Tuesday (Oct. 6). The Tigers had been in the rankings for five straight polls this year, preseason through Week 4, before falling into the collection of teams receiving votes. The Tigers, now 7-3 overall, dropped from the rankings after a loss to Northeastern State at home on Sunday.

Northeastern State jumped into the Top 25 after receiving votes last week. The RiverHawks (6-4 overall) collected wins over ranked teams in each of the last two weeks to return to the Top 25 at No. 24 this week. Upper Iowa is the top ranked team from the MIAA, sitting at No. 14, while Lindenwood joins FHSU in the list of teams receiving votes, so four of the five schools in the MIAA are referenced in the poll.

Fort Hays State has a challenging week ahead as they go on the road to 14th-ranked Upper Iowa, then Lindenwood over the weekend. FHSU is just a half game back of the conference lead, all shared by Upper Iowa, Northeastern State, and Lindenwood at 2-1. FHSU is 1-1 in conference play so far.
