Tigers shut out in loss to Washburn

Fort Hays State fell to Washburn in a single non-conference contest on Wednesday night (Apr. 22) in Topeka, Kan. The Ichabods posted a 13-0 shutout over the Tigers by run-rule in seven innings.

Fort Hays State (15-28) had nine reach base and eight were left on as they could not scratch out a run against three Washburn pitchers. Ichabod starter Zach Linquist went five innings and allowed just three hits and struck out four. Hank Wellborn allowed one hit in his inning of work, and Spencer Schwandt also allowed one hit in an inning of work. Linquist moved to 3-3 on the year for the Ichabods.

Washburn (27-17) did all of its scoring damage in the first through fifth innings. The Ichabods plated three in the first, two in the second, four in the third, and two in both the fourth and fifth.

Alex Cox took the loss for FHSU. He went 2.0 innings in his start, allowing five runs on four hits with a strikeout. Trevor Rinne allowed four runs in 0.2 innings of work. Will Amen allowed three runs (two earned) in 1.1 innings, recording one strikeout. Clayton Basgall went 2.0 innings and allowed one unearned run.

The Tigers now turn their focus to a four-game conference series this weekend to end the regular season at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. The teams will play the series Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

FHSU women 8th at MIAA Golf Championships

Fort Hays State women’s golf closed out the 2014-15 season at the MIAA Championships at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The Tigers finished eighth as a team and Samantha Hobson led the way for FHSU individually.

Hobson tied for 29th individually, shooting a total of 267. She had rounds of 97, 81, and 89. Megan DeWerff and Quillen Eichhorn tied for 40th. DeWerff shot rounds of 93, 92, and 93, while Eichhorn shot rounds of 94, 94, and 90. Abby Schmidtberger was 44th with rounds of 94, 93, and 97, while Hadley Tharp tied for 45th with rounds of 98, 94, and 107.

Marla Souvannasing of Central Oklahoma won the tournament with a total of 228. Central Oklahoma won the tournament as a team shooting a total of 934. Lindenwood was second with 966 and Northeastern State was third with 970.

Herman Earns All-MIAA Honors; Tigers 11th at MIAA Championships

Fort Hays State’s Trey Herman earned All-MIAA honors for his play throughout the season in MIAA events and the Tigers finished 11th as a team at the MIAA Championships at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. Herman led the Tigers by tying for sixth in the tournament.

Herman earned All-MIAA honors for the second straight year as he finished 10th in the individual point standings, accumulating 18.5 points over the four MIAA events throughout the season. Herman led the Tigers at the MIAA Championships by tying for sixth place.

Herman backed up a first-round 78 by shooting 75 in the next two rounds. His total of 228 was seven strokes back of individual medalist Eric Kline of Central Oklahoma, who won a playoff against MIAA Player of the Year Travis Mays of Central Missouri.

Dylan Wonnacott finished in a tie for 36th, shooting rounds of 88, 80, and 78. Grant Storey was 51st with rounds of 102, 75, and 83. Kade Megaffin was one place behind Storey with rounds of 91, 84, and 87. Billy Frey tied for 53rd with two rounds of 91 and an 89.

The Tigers shot 985 as a team. Central Missouri won the tournament with 897. Central Oklahoma was second with 924 and Lindenwood was third with 943.

FHSU softball splits with Northwestern Oklahoma State

The Fort Hays State softball team split with Northwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday in Alva, losing the opener 2-0 then winning the second game 6-5.

The Tigers put seven runners on in the first game but failed to get a hit. FHSU had runners at first and third with no outs in the seventh but three straight strikeouts ended the game. Paxton Duran took the loss, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out two and walking two.

Fort Hays State led 6-0 in the second game but had to hold on as the Rangers rally for five in the seventh. Tori Beltz hit two, two-run homers. Kelsey Kimminau picks up the win, striking out six and walking two. The

Tigers (24-23) look to secure spot in the MIAA tournament when they host Nebraska-Kearney Friday.

FHSU women 8th; men remain 11th after day 2 at MIAA Golf Championships

The Fort Hays State women’s and men’s golf teams continued play at the MIAA Championships in Lawrence, Kan., on Tuesday (Apr. 21) at Alvamar Golf Club. The women improved to eighth in the standings, while the men remained 11th.

In women’s action, Samantha Hobson almost covered Fort Hays State’s entire 18-shot improvement from day one by shooting 16 strokes better than she did on day one. Hobson carded an 81 after a rough first day of 97. She is now tied for 29th individually. Megan DeWerff and Abby Schmidtberger both saw one stroke improvements. DeWerff carded a 92 and Schmidtberger shot 93. Quillen Eichhorn matched her first-day total of 94. Hadley Tharp also shot 94 after carding 98 on the first day.

FHSU shot 360 as a team on day two. FHSU has a two-day total of 738. Central Oklahoma leads as a team at 631, while Lindenwood and Northeastern State are 13 strokes back at 644.

In men’s action, Trey Herman shot three strokes better on day two with a 3-over par 75. He remains in the top 10 of the individual standings, currently tied for eighth. Dylan Wonnacott was eight strokes better with an 80. Kade Megaffin was seven strokes better with an 84. Grant Storey had a huge improvement, shooting 27 strokes better with a 3-over 75 after shooting 102 in the first round. Billy Frey remained consistent, shooting 91 for the second straight day.

Fort Hays State shot 314 as a team on the second day, 34 strokes better than its day one total. The Tigers are at 662 overall. Central Missouri leads the way at 600, while Central Oklahoma is in second with 615 and Washburn is in third with 630.

The Fort Hays State women’s and men’s golf teams are competing at the MIAA Championships in Lawrence, Kan., held at the Alvamar Golf Club. Fort Hays State’s women sit in ninth place and the men are 11th after the first round of competition on Monday.

Megan DeWerff led the Tiger women with a 93 in the first round, tying her for 36th individually. Abby Schmidtberger and Quillen Eichhorn  were each one stroke back with 94, and Samantha Hobson shot 97. Hadley Tharp also competed and shot 98. The Tigers shot 378 as a team.

Central Oklahoma leads the women’s tournament after shooting 320. Northeastern State is just one stroke back and Lindenwood is third after a 331.

Trey Herman led the Tiger men with a round of 78, currently tied for sixth individually. Dylan Wonnacott shot 88, while Kade Megaffin and Billy Frey each shot 91. Grant Storey shot 102. FHSU shot 348 as a team.

Central Missouri leads the men’s tournament after shooting 310. Central Oklahoma (315) is second and Washburn (322) is third.

Hersch carries Tigers past Hornets in finale game of series

Fort Hays State Justin Hersch rebounded from a five-run third inning with five straight scoreless frames leading the Tigers to a 12-10 win over Emporia State in game two of their doubleheader Monday afternoon at Larks Park. The Hornets broke open a 3-3 game to win the opener 11-5.

The Tigers are now 15-27 overall and 12-20 in the MIAA while the Hornets fall to 30-11 and 20-11 in the conference.

Hersch (2-3), who threw 141 pitches, struck out a season-high 10 and retired 11 straight before giving up a one-out double in the ninth falling short of the compete game.

Cooper Langley led the Tiger offense with four hits including a two-run homer in the fourth. Langley drove in five. Andre Vieyra also hit a two-run homer and drove in three. Alex King hit a solo blast in the third after the Hornets had scored five in the top of the inning to tie the game 7-7.

Emporia State hit five home runs, in the first game, four of them in the final two innings. ESU scored eight of their 11 runs in the last two frames, breaking open a 3-3 game with five in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Starter Joe Mapes (1-1) takes the loss for the Tigers allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings. Kevin Czarnecki had two doubles and drove in two. Andre Vieyra homered.

Grand slam leads Emporia State to comeback win over Tigers

Emporia State’s Dean Long hit a two-out eight inning grand slam off of Tiger closer Austin Unrein to tie then Cody Bobbit singled to center in the 11th inning to give the Hornets their first lead as they rally for a 12-11 comeback win over the Fort Hays State Tigers Sunday at Larks Park. The game was a completion of Saturday’s suspended game.

Game Highlights


The Tigers never trailed until the 11th and held leads of 8-3 and 11-7. Starter Steven Federau battled a strong north wind blowing out and gave up seven runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 inings. Austin Unrein takes the loss, allowing four runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings of relief.

Cooper Langley hit one of the Tigers four home runs and drove in four. Unrein, Andre Vieyra and Alex King also went deep.

The two team close out the series with a doubleheader beginning at noon Monday. You can hear game two on KAYS beginning around 2:30pm

Hornets take first game of series with FHSU

Emporia State starter Travis Hendry improved to 8-1 allowing just two runs runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings as the Hornets take game one of their four game series with the Fort Hays State Tigers 4-2 at Larks Park Saturday afternoon. Closer Shawn Talkington recorded the final five outs including a 1-2-3 seventh for his seventh save.

The Tigers only runs came on solo home runs from Nick Hammeke and Kevin Czarnecki. Starting pitcher Tiger starter Gabe Cook (1-3) went the distance, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Just one pitch was thrown in the second game before rain suspended play. That game will resume at 1pm Sunday with a second seven-inning game to follow. The series will wrap up with a single game at a yet to be determined time Monday.

Royals put closer Holland on 15-day DL with pectoral strain

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have put closer Greg Holland on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right pectoral muscle.

The Royals made the move before Saturday night’s game against Oakland.

Holland has four saves this season and has not allowed a hit in four scoreless innings. He has been an All-Star the last two years.

Holland had 46 saves last year in the regular season, then earned seven more in the postseason for the AL champions.

The Royals recalled right-hander Yohan Pino from Triple-A Omaha. He pitched seven scoreless innings and allowed one hit with no walks and six strikeouts last Sunday at New Orleans.

The 31-year-old Pino was 2-5 with a 5.07 ERA in 11 starts last season with the Minnesota Twins.

FHSU wraps up spring practice with Spring Game

The Fort Hays State football team wrapped up their spring drills with the annual Spring Game Saturday morning at Lewis Field. The Tigers ran 60 plays in a controlled scrimmage which did not include full tackling.

Returning quarterback Treveon Albert led the offense with a 40 yard touchdown pass to Garrett Holle on the first possession. Albert scrambled for 14 yards to keep their third possession alive. He connected with Tyler Bacon on a 21 yard pass to set up his seven-yard TD run. Albert also had a 17 yard completion to Holle which set up a Drew O’Brien field goal later in the scrimmage.

Freshman John Wilson picked off a Jacob Mezera pass near mid field and returned it for a touchdown to highlight the defense which had several starters from last year out.

The Tigers were without several returning starters on both sides of the ball. Offensive lineman Matt Erbert sat out the entire spring due to semesters. Wide receiver Isaiah Maxi was also out recovering from injury. The offense was also without quarterback Kevin Spain (hand) and running back Kenneth Iheme (leg) due to injuries suffered during practice. Junior offensive lineman Jarred Stindt and transfer running back TJ Thomas both went down with knee injuries during the scrimmage.

Defensive lineman Johnny Hubbard and Noah Debben were also held out due to injury and Daniel Lindsey did not practice this spring.

FHSU comeback falls short against Newman

The Fort Hays State baseball team committed two errors in the sixth inning resulting in five unearned runs and fall 10-9 to Newman Wednesday at Larks Park.

The Tigers took advantage of two Jet errors to score three in the fifth and grab a 5-2 lead on a Kevin Czarnecki two-run homer, but Newman answered with seven in the sixth to take a 9-5 lead.

Fort Hays State loaded the bases to start the ninth and scored three runs but pinch hitter Casey Sedbrook struck looking with the bases loaded to end the comeback.

Kyle Vogt takes the loss in relief despite not allowing an earned run in two innings. Starter Brad Spires gave up five runs, four earned, on 10 this over five innings.

The Tigers fall to 14-24. They play their final four home games of the season this weekend against Emporia State beginning Friday night at 7 pm at Larks Park.

FHSU women’s basketball awards and autograph reception Sunday

In honor of the Fort Hays State Women’s Basketball team’s conference championship season and their appearance in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, the Fort Hays State Athletic Department is holding an Awards and Autograph Reception for the public to attend on Sunday, April 19. The event will be held at the Robbins Center on the campus of Fort Hays State University at 5 pm.

Team members will be receiving their honors from winning the MIAA Regular Season Championship and their participation in the NCAA Tournament. FHSU athletic director Curtis Hammeke will present the MIAA Regular Season Championship Trophy and head coach Tony Hobson will have a few words to say about each of his players. Be on hand to recap the great season that saw the Tigers go 30-4 overall and earn the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

Fans are encouraged to bring materials for the team to sign following the awards portion of the reception. Refreshments and cookies will be available to the public while supplies last.
