FHSU Athletics

As a team, the Tigers went 72-51 on the afternoon, picking up 17 falls – second most in the tournament behind Nebraska-Kearney (19). Additionally, FHSU had a tournament high four technical falls on the day, including three straight from Page.

Page’s first tech fall came by shutout, a 16-0 victory over Oscar Soto (NW Kansas Tech).  From there, Page (285) posted another shutout, taking down Shawn Beeson of NE Oklahoma A&M, 15-0. His third and final tech fall of the day was another shutout (17-0) over Riley Fielder (Oklahoma City).  In the semifinal, Page’s match with Tuli Laulu (Adams State) was a narrow 5-3 decision, but the senior heavyweight returned to his dominant ways in the finals, knocking off Ivan DeLeon (Nebraska-Kearney) by major decision, 13-3.

Ludwin’s day began with a bye in the first round before he picked up an 8-2 decision over CSU-Pueblo’s Gage Currier in the second round.  In the quarterfinals, Ludwin (125) won by decision (6-4) over Quinton Harrison (Bethany), setting up a rematch of Friday night’s contest against Zach D’Amico (Central Oklahoma).  Though he dropped the Friday contest, 2-1, Ludwin picked up a revenge victory over D’Amico to reach the finals, shutting the Bronchos’ 125-pounder out, 6-0.  In the finals, however, Ludwin ran out of steam, dropping a 7-2 decision in overtime to Aaron LaFarge of Oklahoma City.

After a first round bye, Little (165) won by major decision (12-3) over NE Oklahoma A&M’s Danny Carrilla in the second round before taking down Jonathan Blackwell (Bethany), 8-3, in the quarterfinals.  Little reached the finals with a pin in 6:24 over Colby CC’s Gavin Grater, but saw his run come to an end in the finals, falling to Zach Skates (Oklahoma City), 6-2.

Inman (184) looked unbeatable early, picking up two straight falls over Trevor Whitaker of Bethany (6:57) and Anthony Ball of CSU-Pueblo (4:43), before rolling through the quarterfinals with an 11-4 decision over UNK’s Zach Stodden.  In the semifinals, Inman doubled up NE Oklahoma A&M’s Brock Warren, 12-6 to square off with Division I opponent Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska. Up early in the match, a late takedown by Studebaker ended Inman’s day in second place by 6-5 decision.

Garrett Jones and Cash Drylie each made the quarterfinals of their respective brackets, and after dropping to the consolation bracket, wrestled their ways back to the third place match.  Once there, Jones fell by decision, 8-3, to Gerald Huff (Adams State) and Drylie dropped a 12-5 contest to Miguel Tovar (Oklahoma City).

The Tigers continue the tournament portion of its regular season schedule next weekend (Sunday, Dec. 14) at the Newman Invitational in Wichita, Kan.  Last season, the Tigers won the team title despite any individual championships, though nine Tigers made the championship matches.

By GERARD WELLBROCK
Hays Post

Craig Nicholson fought off early foul trouble to score a game-high 23 points and lead the Fort Hays State Tigers to a 90-78 win over Missouri Western Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum. Nicholson picked up two fouls in the first five minutes and only played 31 minutes but hit 8-of-9 from the field, was 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and hit all five of his free throw attempts.
Mark Johnson Postgame Interview

The Tigers trailed by five in the first half but an 8-0 run gave them the lead for good. A Nicholson 3-pointer near the end of the first half put FHSU up 42-32 at the half. They would score the first four points of the second half to go up 14, but Western cut that lead to seven before a 6-0 Tiger run put the game away.

Game Highlights

Jake Stoppel recorded his second double-double of the season, scoring 18 and grabbing 11 rebounds. Dom Samac scored 13, Achoki Moikobu 12 and James Fleming 11.

The Tigers shoot 53-percent from the floor including 7-of-19 from 3-point range. They go 23-of-26 from the free throw line and out-rebound the Griffons by eight.

FHSU is now 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. They host Northwestern Oklahoma State Monday at 7pm.

FHSU wrestling uses bonus points to knock off No. 9 Central Oklahoma

FHSU Athletics

Fort Hays State opened the dual season with an impressive 29-16 win over No. 9 Central Oklahoma on Friday, Dec. 5. Garrett Jones, Noah Killip, Josh Rodriguez, Jon Inman, Cash Drylie and Trey Page all picked up victories on the evening, helping the Tigers start 1-0 in conference duals as well.  As a team, the Tigers had three pins and two major decisions, giving the team much needed bonus points in the win.

In the first match of the night, Adam Ludwin (125) hung tough with UCO’s Zac D’Amico for much of the match, nearly pulling off a reversal in the final minute of action, but couldn’t circle behind to complete the move, dropping a 2-1 decision.

At 133 pounds, Jones trailed 5-1 in the third period against Dustin Reed (UCO) and looked to be on the verge of another decision loss for the Tigers. Around the 5:30 mark of the match, however, Jones tossed Reed to his back before picking up a come-from-behind victory with a pin in 6:10.  The fall gave FHSU a 6-3 lead in the team score.

Killip furthered that team score advantage (10-3) in his 149 pound bout, running over UCO’s Austin Quinton with a 10-0 major decision.  Killip nearly picked up the Tigers’ second straight pin in the second period, but was only awarded near fall points on his way to the victory.

FHSU found itself trailing soon after Killip’s match, however, as UCO strung together three straight wins at 149, 157 and 165 pounds.

At 149, eighth-ranked Spencer Rutherford (UCO) picked up an 11-3 major decision over FHSU’s Ky Biddle before Bradley Little dropped a narrow 3-2 decision against Jeromy Davenport.  Down 3-1 in the third, Little had an escape and pushed hard through the final two minutes but couldn’t come up with a takedown as the Bronchos tied the match, 10-all.

UCO took back the lead (16-10) at 165 pounds, as No. 1 Chris Watson won by fall over FHSU’s Bryce Lewis in 2:44.  Lewis started the match with an early takedown on Watson, but the top-ranked wrestler found his way into the top position with a reversal before pinning Lewis.

From there, it was all Fort Hays State to close the match, beginning with two wrestlers ranked fifth nationally in their respective weight classes.  At 174 pounds, Rodriguez’s 14-4 major decision came with several near fall points against Colton Gallo (UCO) before the Inman (184 pounds) took control early before sticking Dylan Harmon (UCO) in 4:11 – giving the Tigers back a 20-16 lead.

The Tigers sealed the win behind Drylie’s narrow 5-4 victory over Michael Conner (UCO) at 197 pounds.  Down 3-2 in the third period (though he had around two minutes of riding time built up), Drylie picked up a reversal as the riding clock wound down to a minute before holding on for the decision.  The Tigers led, 23-16, at that point.

Page, ranked eighth nationally, made quick work of his opponent in the final match of the evening, taking down John Finn (UCO) in the first period before turning and sticking the 285-pounder in 2:19.

The win was just FHSU’s fourth all-time against the Bronchos, though the Tigers had UCO on the ropes last year – dropping the match (16-22) because of an open weight class.

FHSU returns to the mats this Sunday (Dec. 7) for the Bob Smith Open at Gross Memorial Coliseum.  Action begins at 9 a.m.

Complete results from Friday’s contest are below…

125 – Zac D’Amico (UCO) wins by decision (2-1) over Adam Ludwin (FHSU)
