By GERARD WELLBROCK

Kate Lehman led FHSU with 26 points, 12 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Chelsea Mason added 13 points.

UNK was led by Nicole Arp who scored a career-high 19.

FHSU softball sweeps Rockhurst in home opener

FHSU Sports Information

No. 14 Fort Hays State swept its first doubleheader of the season on Friday, taking down Rockhurst 9-0 (six innings) in Game 1, and 6-4 in Game 2.

FHSU, which hit .370 as a team, is now 7-1 overall this season and has won six straight.  Rockhurst dropped to 2-6 with the losses.

FHSU hits the road this weekend for a five-game tournament in St. Paul, Minn., on Feb. 23-24.  FHSU will face Minnesota Duluth and Minot State twice and University of Mary once.

Game 1: FHSU 9, Rockhurst 0 (6 innings)
Fort Hays State’s Paxton Duran (4-0) threw a complete game, striking out seven and allowing just four hits to win her fourth game of the season.  Duran didn’t walk a batter and dropped her season ERA to 2.05.

At the plate, FHSU’s Danie Brinkmann was 2-for-2 with an RBI while Tori Beltz (1-for-2) and Duran (2-for-3) each had multi-RBI home runs.

With both teams scoreless through the first three innings, FHSU got things started in the fourth with a lead-off single from Brinkmann.  After Kelli Koehler entered to pinch run for Brinkmann, Beltz took the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center, sending FHSU ahead, 2-0.

The Tigers’ largest run sequence came in the fifth, starting with Duran’s lead-off single up the middle.  During Kellsi Olsen’s at-bat, Duran reached second, and a walk for Olsen put runners on first and second with no outs. Biance Adame’s single up the middle sent Duran home and moved Olsen to second.  Next, Rilee Krier laid down a bunt single to load the bases, but a throwing error on RU’s Bridgette Sappington allowed all three runners to move up, scoring Olsen.  Brinkmann’s second hit of the day – a single – scored Adame to put FHSU ahead, 5-0.  During Beltz’s at-bat, Brinkmann was caught stealing, but the play allowed Krier to come home for the sixth run of the day.

In the final inning, two straight singles from Amanda Vaupel and Kylie Strand set up runners on first and second with no outs for Duran.  On the first pitch of her at-bat, Duran blasted a three-run shot to left field, ending the game early with a run-rule.

Game 2: FHSU 6, Rockhurst 2
Kelsey Kimmiau (2-1) threw into the sixth inning with four strikeouts for the win, while Latlyn Kern’s two scoreless innings earned her the save.  Kimminau allowed six hits on the day and Kern walked just one batter.

Courtney Dobson went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI, and Vaupel (1-for-2) had a home run with two runs scored. Samantha Villareal picked up two RBI in a pinch hitting role, going 1-for-1 with a single.

The Tigers jumped out to a two-run lead in the first, using back-to-back two-out walks from Brinkmann and Beltz to start the offense.  Dobson’s first double of the day followed, bouncing off the wall in center to score both runners.

Rockhurst tied the game, 2-2 in the fourth, as Demi Plathe led off with a double and later came around to score.  All told, RU had three hits in the inning with two runs scored.

In the bottom of the fourth, though, FHSU took control back for good.   Dobson led off the inning with a double, and moved to third on Vaupel’s sacrifice bunt – which Vaupel reached safely on due to a fielder’s choice.  Strand’s ground ball moved Vaupel to second, and with one out, a walk from Amy Dunn loaded the bases. Kellsi Olsen’s sacrifice fly pushed all Tigers up a base and scored Dobson.  With one out, Villarreal pinch hit for Adame, and sliced a ball into center to score Vaupel and Dunn.

The Hawks answered again in the fifth, but scored just one run on an RBI-double from Plathe, putting the game at 5-3.  In the sixth, RU’s Rachel Evans hit a sacrifice fly into left that scored Alex Hill and shrunk FHSU’s lead to just one (5-4).

That, however, was as close as RU could climb, as Fort Hays State tacked on one more run in the sixth – a solo shot from Vaupel to lead off the inning.

Tiger baseball takes series opener with Pitt State

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State baseball opened its MIAA slate with a win on Friday (Feb. 21) at Larks Park in Hays, defeating Pittsburg State 6-3. The Tigers moved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.

The Tigers took the early lead 1-0 on a Clayton Garland solo home run in the third inning, but Pittsburg State responded for all three of its runs on a Tory Stoffregen 3-run home run in the fifth to go up 3-1.

Fort Hays State immediately responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back at 5-3. Kodie Fewin triggered the rally with a solo home run, cutting the lead to one. After a single and a hit batter, Garland knocked in the tying run with a double to the left center gap. Alex King followed Garland with a RBI single to put the Tigers in front 4-3 and then Horace Johnson had a RBI groundout with the bases loaded.

Fewin hit his second solo homer of the game in the sixth to extend the FHSU lead to 6-3, the eventual final. All six runs were charged to PSU starter Tyler Thompson, who lasted 5.2 innings.

Steven Federau tossed five scoreless frames of his 6.0 innings pitched, allowing all three PSU runs in the fifth. Federau faced one batter in the seventh before yielding to Drew Martineau for the final 3.0 innings. Martineau picked up his first save of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Federau struck out four and allowed six hits in his outing.

The Tigers and Gorillas meet in the doubleheader of the four-game weekend series on Saturday, starting at 1 pm at Larks Park.

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State Women’s Basketball is slated 10th in the first release of the NCAA Central Region Rankings, announced Wednesday (Feb. 19).  Eight teams are selected to play in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season, but automatic bids are given to teams that win conference postseason tournaments.

The Tigers (16-6, 9-6 MIAA) are tied for fifth in overall losses (six) with MIAA foes Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern, trailing Minnesota State-Mankato and Northern State of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference by just one loss.  Though the TIgers have 16 overall wins, just 13 of those are listed as In-Region and Division II matchups.

Emporia State and Harding are ranked first and second in the region, followed by Central Missouri, Wayne State (Neb.) and MSU to round out the top five.  The Tigers split against ESU this season, knocking off the Lady Hornets in Hays, Kan., but falling in a close game in Emporia, Kan.

Eight teams will be selected to the NCAA Tournament from the region, but three automatic bids will be at stake from the MIAA, NSIC, and GAC. Teams outside the top 10 of the region rankings could steal a bid to the tournament by winning their conference tournament.

FHSU plays its final road game of the regular season on Feb. 19 (Wednesday) against Washburn in Topeka, Kan.  Game time is slated for 5:30 p.m.

Below is the first set of rankings for the 2014 season. A new set of rankings will be released next Wednesday (Feb. 26).

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State men’s basketball is ranked sixth in the first set of NCAA Central Region Rankings, released on Wednesday (Feb. 19). The Tigers join four other MIAA schools in the top eight of the list. Eight teams are selected to play in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament at the end of the season, but automatic bids are given to teams that win conference postseason tournaments.

Fort Hays State is among a log jam of schools in the top six that have six or less losses overall. Fort Hays State is currently 20-4 overall, but has a Division II overall record of 18-4. FHSU is tied with Winona State, the top-ranked team in the region in terms of Division II record, which is also 18-4.

Minnesota State, the second-ranked team in the region, has the best overall Division II record among the 10 listed in the region rankings at 19-4, but the Mavericks lost both regular season meetings with Winona State, thus making WSU the top team in the region at this point.

Missouri Southern, which the Tigers defeated in Joplin earlier this year, is the No. 3 ranked team in the region, followed by Northwest Missouri State and Central Missouri. FHSU lost its only meetings with Northwest Missouri and Central Missouri earlier this year. Fort Hays State and Central Missouri have the best overall Division II records of the teams listed from the MIAA, despite being the two lowest ranked out of the cluster of four teams from the conference. FHSU is currently 2-2 against teams in the top 10 of the region rankings, 1-2 against the other MIAA teams and a win on No. 9 Southwest Minnesota State’s home floor.

Strength of schedule could be playing a big factor in the current rankings. Even though FHSU ran the table in its Division II non-conference schedule (7-0), a few of the non-conference opponents have turned out to be well below .500 in overall record this year. Unfortunately, that is a factor that cannot be controlled as the season moves on.

Eight teams will be selected to the NCAA Tournament from the region, but three automatic bids will be at stake from the MIAA, NSIC, and GAC. Teams outside the top 10 of the region rankings could steal a bid to the tournament by winning their conference tournament.

Below is the first set of rankings for the 2014 season. A new set of rankings will be released next Wednesday (Feb. 26).

FHSU wrestling fourth at MIAA Championships; Napier wins 141 pound title

FHSU Sports Information

Fort Hays State had one individual championship while finishing fourth as a team at the MIAA Wrestling Championships on Sunday in Hays, Kan.  Fourth-ranked C.J. Napier took first-place honors at 141 pounds, the Tigers’ first-ever MIAA individual champion. Josh Rodriguez, Jon Inman, Tanner Kriss and Trey Page were second, while Adam Ludwin rounded out the Tigers place-winners in third place.

In team scoring, FHSU finished with 63 points, 4.5 points behind third-place Central Oklahoma, who had 67.5 points.  Nebraska-Kearney (109 points) won the team title, while Lindenwood (84.5 points) took second.

All six place-winners were named All-MIAA, while Jon Inman was named MIAA Freshman of the Year for his efforts at 184 pounds.

Adam Ludwin placed third at 125 pounds after going 3-1 overall.  Ludwin’s day started with a 3-1 decision over Josh Breece (UCO) before falling to eventual champion Marco Tamayo (LWU) by major decision, 11-1, in the semifinals.  On the consolation side of the bracket, Ludwin defeated Jabez Zinabu (Truman), 6-1, before defeating Breece for the second time of the day, 9-6, in the consolation finals.

Napier’s title chase started with a 14-3 major decision over Mark Smith of Truman, followed up by a 7-5 decision against Dustin Reed (UCO) in the semifinals.  In the championship bout, Napier used a reversal with less than 15 seconds to go in the third period to take a 5-4 lead against Brock Coutu of Nebraska-Kearney.  Napier eventually took the title with a score of 6-4.

Josh Rodriguez finished 2-1 on the day to finish second at 174 pounds.  Rodriguez earned a bye into the semifinals, and then won by major decision over Josh Thomsen of Central Missouri, 8-0.  In the title match, Rodriguez was tied 1-1 inside the final minute, but was called for a stalling point against UNK’s Patrick Martinez to fall by decision, 2-1.

Inman’s 184 pound championship efforts fell just short, as he went 2-1 on the day to finish second.  Inman started the day with a first-round bye.  In the semifinals, Inman won by decision over UCO’s Znick Ferrell, 4-2 to set up a title contest with No. 3 John McArdle (LWU).  Inman led, 14-9 inside the final 45 seconds, but a late third-period toss from McArdle set up a pin in 6:35.

No. 7 Tanner Kriss reached the championship in 197 pounds, but injury defaulted in the final to UNK’s Romero Cotton (No. 1).  Kriss won his first round match by fall in 1:43 over Steven Cooksley of Newman.  In the semifinals, Kriss led late into the match, but with 10 seconds remaining, Kenny Breaux (LWU) injury defaulted out of the contest.

Trey Page started his 285 pound tournament with a 10-0 major decision over Todd Brier (UCM), followed by a 5-2 decision against Kelsey Empting (UNK) in the semifinals.  Page squared off with No. 7 Steven Butler (LWU) for the second time in a week in the finals, falling by decision, 5-2.

Fort Hays State will now compete in the NCAA Central Super Regional on Feb. 28 through March 1 in Edmond, Okla.
