Tigers hold off Lincoln, Johnson becomes all-time winningest coach

The Fort Hays State Tigers hit their first 29 free throws and finished 35-of-40 from the line in an 88-85 win over Lincoln Saturday at Gross Coliseum. The Tigers had to hold on down the stretch after building a 14 point lead in the second half and were up 13 with 1:37 to play before the Blue Tigers closed the game on a 9-2 run.

Craig Nicholson tied the school record with 19 made free throws and led FHSU with 27 points. Dwayne Brunson added 20 points and nine rebounds. Tomislav Gabric added a season-high 19.

The win was the 258th for head coach Mark Johnson who becomes the Tigers all-time winningest coach, surpassing the legendary Cade Suran.

The Tigers used an early 11-0 run to go up 11-2 and were up 13 with 7:04 to play in the first half but Lincoln responded with a 19-8 run to pull within two. The Tigers closed the half on an 11-2 run, nine of the points from Craig Nicholson, and led 48-37 at the break.

The Tigers shoot 54-percent from the floor but hit just 1-of-10 from beyond the arc. Lincoln shot 51-percent and 9-of-18 from three-point range.

Tigers reach consolation semifinals at NWCA National Duals

Fort Hays State University wrestling went 2-1 on the first day of the NWCA National Duals in Des Moines, Iowa on Saturday.  The Tigers started the day with a 24-17 comeback victory over No. 8 Indianapolis in the opening round, and then fell to No. 4 Newberry, 22-12 in the quarterfinals.  The final match of the night pitted the Tigers against Colorado State-Pueblo in the consolation quarterfinals.  FHSU took that match, 28-15, and moved on to Day 2 of the tournament.

The Tigers will face Upper Iowa at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Jan. 12).

A breakdown of Day 1 matches are below…

Fort Hays State 24, No. 8 Indianapolis 17
Down 10-0 in the early going, Fort Hays State wrestling picked up a 24-17 comeback win over No. 8 Indianapolis in the first round of the NWCA National Duals on Saturday.

Fort Hays State struggled through the first two matchups, as No. 6 Adam Ludwin (125 pounds) dropped a major decision, 12-1, to Alex Johns (ranked No. 2), and Symon Seaton (133 pounds) fell by pin to Joshua Kieffer in 2:03.

FHSU was right back into the match at 141 pounds as C.J. Napier pinned in 2:15 over Andrew Frey, putting the score at 10-6.

Indianapolis extended its lead during the 149 pound bout, as Cameryn Brady, ranked fourth nationally, won by major decision, 12-2, over Joey Dozier.

Mitchell Means provided a response from the Tigers at 157 pounds, picking up a 9-3 decision over Sheldon Struble pull the Tigers within six, 14-9.

FHSU continued to climb closer to Indianapolis in the team score at 165 pounds with Bradley Little’s decision over Jeff Weiss, 10-3.

With Indianapolis leading the team score, 14-12, Josh Rodriguez (174 pounds) took on Shelby Mappes.  Close throughout, Rodriguez scored a takedown in the waning seconds of the third period, but it wasn’t enough as Mappes won by decision, 7-5.

At 184 pounds, freshman Jon Inman picked up an important 9-6 decision over George Lopez, pulling the Tigers within one decision (three points) of taking the lead in team points.

Those team points came soon after, as Tanner Kriss’ first period pin (fall in 1:50) over Taylor Scott propelled the Tigers into their first lead of the day, up 21-17 with one match to go.

Trey Page, ranked fourth nationally, sealed the comeback for FHSU in his 285 pound match.  The junior clinched the comeback for FHSU with a 4-3 decision over Evan Wooding.

No. 4 Newberry 22, Fort Hays State University 12
Fort Hays State’s second comeback effort of the day fell short as the team dropped a 22-12 decision to No. 4 Newberry in the NWCA National Dual Quarterfinals.

In the first four matches of the dual, Newberry jumped to a 12-0 lead with four close decisions.  Jeff Vesta (ranked third nationally) defeated No. 6 Adam Ludwin, 4-2, at 125 pounds, and Symon Seaton fell, 12-9, at 133 pounds to Trung Duong.  At 141 pounds, C.J. Napier held a lead until late in the third period, when B.J. Young, ranked fifth nationally, grabbed a 7-6 comeback decision.

The final victory in that stretch for Newberry was at 149 pounds, as Seiji Borja won by decision over Joey Dozier, 4-2.

Mitchell Means and Bradley Little stopped the run for Newberry at 157 and 165 pounds, pulling the Tigers within three at 12-9.  Means stuck Kayne Melko in a pin at 5:32, and Little won a close 7-6 decision over Taylor Knapp.

Just one decision from tying the match, Newberry regained control at 174 and 184 pounds.  Joe Pittman major decisioned Josh Rodriguez, 12-3 (174 pounds), and Jared Holliday topped Jon Inman, 7-2 (184 pounds), giving Newberry a 19-9 lead.

Needing at least a major decision to put a tie within reach for the teams, Tanner Kriss just missed the mark with an 8-1 victory over Joe Grisko – ranked eighth nationally and a returning All-American – at 197 pounds.

In the final match of the dual, No. 4 Trey Page lost by decision, 10-4, to No. 5 Matt Wade, sending the Tigers to a consolation quarterfinal matchup with Colorado State-Pueblo.

Fort Hays State 28, Colorado State-Pueblo 15
Adam Ludwin )125 and C.J. Napier (141) earned byes in two of the first three matches, giving the Tigers 12 free team points in the early going.  At 133 pounds, Symon Seaton lost by fall (2:10) to Tim Urenda.

At 12-6, FHSU dropped two straight decisions in the 149 pound and 157 pound matches. Joey Dozier (149 pounds) lost, 6-5, to Jimmy Chase, and Mitchell Means dropped a sudden victory overtime match, 3-1 to Ray Hall.

Bryce Lewis’ 6-1 decision at 165 pounds marked the first individual victory for the Tigers throughout the match, and put FHSU back on top in team scoring, 15-12.

CSU-Pueblo answered back at 174 pounds, tying the match at 15-all with Trevor Grant’s 8-2 decision over Josh Rodgriguez.

Jon Imnan gave FHSU its final advantage of the day with a major decision over Augustine Desantis, 12-2.

Tanner Kriss would extend that team lead to 10 (25-15) with his second pin of the day, sticking Riley Argyle in 1:07.

Third-ranked TreyPage closed out the first day of action for FHSU with an overtime 3-1 decision over No. 7 Niko Bogojevic , sending FHSU into the consolation semifinals against Upper Iowa.

Lady Tigers rout Lincoln for third straight win

Chelsea Mason recorded her third straight 20-plus point game, scoring 25 to lead the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers to a 98-54 win over Lincoln Saturday afternoon at Gross Coliseum. It’s the third straight win for the Lady Tigers and the third straight game of scoring 90 or more points. FHSU is now 11-2 overall and 5-2 in the MIAA. Lincoln has lost six straight and is now 3-11 and 0-7 in the conference.

Fort Hays State never trailed, scoring the games first six points. Lincoln answered with a 5-0 run but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the way. The Lady Tigers scored the games next 13 points the closed the half on a 12-0 run to lead 54-18 at the break.

The Lady Tigers continued their good shooting from behind the three-point line, connecting on 52-percent (11-21). They shot 81-percent from the free throw line (25-31) and outrebounded the Blue Tigers by 23.

Fort Hays State got 24 points off of turnovers and put up 53 in the second half as they picked up a win at home over Lindenwood. FHSU shot .530 on the night as they moved to 4-2 in the league.

For the Tigers Kate Lehman recorded a triple-double with 13 points, 12 rebounds and ten blocked shots. Chelsea Mason led all scorers with 25 points and Katelyn Edwards added 16 points. For the Lions Kassidy Gengenbacher led the way with 20 points while Julie Hlinak had 18 points and eight rebounds. Caroline Bourlious had 13 points and five assists on the evening.

Fort Hays State got 15 points off of turnovers as they picked up a win over Lindenwood at home. FHSU shot .475 on the night as they moved to 3-3 in league play.

For the Tigers Carson Konrade scored 19 points and Dwayne Brunson added 18 points. Andrew Victoria led the way on the glass with nine rebounds and Craig Nicholson had 11 assists. For the Lions Tyler Ressel had 19 points and was the only one in double figures. Darris Smith scored nine points and pulled down a team best eight rebounds.

Northwest Missouri at Nebraska-Kearney 
WBB – UNK 70, NWMSU 59
Nebraska-Kearney erased a 14-point halftime deficit as they picked up a win over Northwest Missouri at home. UNK racked p 25 points off of turnovers as they moved to 3-4 in the MIAA.

For the Lopers Amarah Williams had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Shelby Zimmerman and Sydney Seberger each had 11 points and Larammey Lewis pulled down nine boards. For the Bearcats Ariel Easton led all scorers with 20 points on the night. Annie Mathews had double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

MBB – NWMSU 73, UNK 69 OT
Neither team led by more than six points as Northwest Missouri defeated Nebraska-Kearney in overtime on the road. NWMSU got 15 points off of turnover as they moved to 4-1 in league play.

For the Bearcats Bryston Williams led all scorers with 20 points and Conner Crooker had 15 points. DeShaun Cooper finished with 14 points and Dillon Starzl had 11 points on the night. For the Lopers Mike Dentlinger led the way with 18 points. Connor Beranek had 15 points and Ethan Bozek pulled down nine rebounds.

Southwest Baptist at Northeastern State 
WBB – NSU 60, SBU 47
Northeastern State held Southwest Baptist to just 21 points in the first half as they picked up a win at home. NSU held SBU to just .224 shooting on the night as they moved to 3-2 in the league this season.

For the RiverHawks Carrington Fox had a double-double scoring 14 points and pulling down ten rebounds. Che’Ron Lewis led all scorers with 18 points in the game. For the Bearcats Jacqui Zelenka was one board shy of a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Leann Lansdown added 13 points and Brook Duncan had six rebounds.

Northeastern State racked up 57 points in the second half as they picked up a win over Southwest Baptist at home. NSU shot .552 from the field and .520 from the three-point line as they moved to 5-0 in the league this season.

For the RiverHawks Bryton Hobbs scored a game high 40 points and Dalen Qualls added 23 points. Marcus Sheppard had 18 points and Curtis Evans pulled down eight rebounds. For the Bearcats Jaywaun Hill led the way with 25 points and Menas Stephens had 17 points. Rashaad Brown-Peterson had 14 points and Desi Barmore pulled down 11 rebounds.

Central Missouri at Pittsburg State 
WBB – #6 UCM 88, PSU 86 OT
#6 Central Missouri hit three free throws with 14 seconds to play in overtime to seal a win on the road at Pittsburg State. UCM got 17 points off of turnovers as they moved to 6-0 in league play.

For the Jennies Keuna Flax had a double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds. BreAnna Lewis led all scorers with 26 points and Shelby Winkelmann had 13 points and Revonnia Howard had 12 points. For the Gorillas Lizzy Jeronimus had 25 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Alex Muff had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and Cathy Brugman had 11 points.

MBB – UCM 88, PSU 62
Central Missouri put up 55 points in the first half as they picked up a win over Pittsburg State on the road. UCM got 29 points off of turnover and shot .527 from the field as they moved to 5-1 in league play.

For the Mules Kyle Wolf had 18 points and seven rebounds. Ryan Magdziarz had 14 points and Daylen Robinson and Jon Gilliam had each had 10 points while Ryan Donald added eight boards. For the Gorillas Devon Branch was the only scorer in double figures with 17 points. Denton Hays led the way on the glass with eight total rebounds.

Late run lifts Tigers past Lindenwood

Carson Konrade scored all 12 of Fort Hays State’s points during a late 12-3 run that pushed the Tigers lead to 13 and they defeat the Lindenwood Lions 70-62 Thursday night at Gross Coliseum. The victory is the Tigers third straight and improves them to 11-3 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA. The Lions fall to 8-9 and 3-4 in the conference. The win was Mark Johnson’s 257th, tying him with the legendary Cade Suran as the Tigers all-time winningest coach.

The Tigers raced to a 6-0 lead and led by seven midway through the first half but Lindenwood pulled within three at halftime. The Tigers opened the second half on a 9-1 run and led by 10. Lindenwood scored seven straight to pull within three but the Tigers answered with a final push for the win.

Carson Konrade hit three 3’s, all in the second half, and led the Tigers with 19 points. Dwayne Brunson added 18 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots. Craig Nicholson dished out 11 assists to become the seventh Tiger to dish out over 300 in a career.

The Tigers shot 48-percent but held the Lions to 39-percent.

Lehman’s triple-double helps Lady Tigers to home win over Lindenwood

Kate Lehman recorded just the second triple-double in Fort Hays State women’s basketball history helping the Lady Tigers to a 99-76 win over over the Lindenwood Lady Lions Thursday night at Gross Coliseum. The victory improves FHSU to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the MIAA. The Lions, who have lost three straight, fall to 8-6 and 3-4.

Lehman scored 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked 10 shots. Chelsea Mason led the Lady Tigers with 25 points, Kate Edwards added 16 and Jill Faxon 10. The only other Lady Tiger to record a triple-double was Amy Scoby during the 1995-96 season in points, rebounds and assists.

The Lady Tigers hit their first four 3-pointers and led by as many as 19 on several different occasions in the first half before settling for a 15-point lead at the break. Lindenwood pulled as close as 11 early in the second half, but the Tigers answered with a 13-2 run to push the lead to 23.

The Lady Tigers shoot 53-percent from the floor and connected on 9-of-18 from beyond the arc and were 20-of-28 from the free throw line.

Tigers receive votes in the latest NBCA Poll

Back-to-back road wins at Missouri Southern and Southwest Baptist have the Fort Hays State men’s basketball team receiving votes in the latest NBCA top-25 poll. The Tigers, who were ranked as high as No. 15 before suffering back-to-back overtime losses in early December, are receiving one vote and are the last team in the poll receiving votes.

Central Missouri is the only MIAA team in the top-25 at No. 24. Washburn and Northeastern State are also receiving votes.

Strong second half carries FHSU past Southwest Baptist

The Fort Hays State Tigers used a 30-13 first half run to build a nine-point first half lead, then held Southwest Baptist to 28 points in the second half to defeat the Bearcats 91-72 Monday night in Bolivar. The victory is the Tigers second straight and improves their record to 10-3 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA. SBU falls to 8-5 and 1-3 in the conference.

The Tigers trailed by eight in the first half before going on a 30-13 run to go up nine with :10 to play. The Bearcats hit a three at the horn to pull within 50-44 at halftime.

Andrew Victoria led five Tigers in double figures with 18 points and 11 rebounds, his first career double-double. Carson Konrade hit four 3-pointers and added 17. Craig Nicholson scored 13, Dwayne Brunson 12 and Jake Stoppel 10.

Southwest Baptist was led by Rashaad Brown-Peterson’s 13 points. The Bearcats hit just four of their 19 three-point attempts in the second half after hitting 8-of-16 in the first.

The Fort Hays State Lady Tigers hit nine second half three-pointers and defeat the Southwest Baptist Bearcats 93-66 Monday in Bolivar. The Tigers raced out to an 18-point first half lead but the Bearcats respond with a 33-15 run to take a one-point lead early in the second half, but FHSU answered with four-straight three’s to push the lead back go double-figures.

Chelsea Mason hit three of the Lady Tigers 10 three’s and finished with a game-high 20 points. Nicola Kacperska also hit three three’s and scored 13. Kate Lehman added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The Tigers raced out to a 6-0 lead to start the game and led by 18 with 11 minutes to play in the half thanks to a 10-0 run. The Bearcats would outscore the Tigers 27-13 the rest of the half to pull within 40-36 at the break.

Ludwin, Page earn national rankings in latest poll

Fort Hays State wrestling dropped out of the Top 20 as a team, but saw two wrestlers – Adam Ludwin and Trey Page – earn individual rankings in the latest Division II Wrestling Coaches Association poll, released Jan. 3.

FHSU-WR-PageFHSU is still receiving votes in the poll, but fell out of ranking (previously No. 20) from the previous poll, released Dec. 4. The Tigers won the Jet Invitational, hosted by Newman, in their last appearance, topping Ouachita Baptist (now No. 12) and Central Oklahoma (now No. 3) in the process.

Individually, Ludwin made his debut in the 125 pound national rankings, sitting at No. 6 after starting the season at 15-5. Ludwin is 7-2 against Division II opponents,

285-pounder Page also made the individual rankings, pulling in fourth after knocking off Cody Dauphin (now No. 3) at the Bob Smith Open and Newman’s Lorenzo Serna (now No. 8) at the Bob Smith Open and the Jet Invitational. Page is 12-4 on the season thus far, and 8-2 against Division II opponents.

The Tigers will travel to Des Moines, Iowa this weekend for the NWCA National Duals on Saturday, Jan. 11 and Sunday, Jan. 12.

Nicholson, Stoppel leads FHSU past Missouri Southern

FHSU-MBB-NicholsonCraig Nicholson scored a game-high 22 points, hitting all 11 of his free throw attempts, and Jake Stoppel added a career-best 14, all in the first half, to lead the Fort Hays State Tigers to a 76-67 win at Missouri Southern Saturday. The win improves the Tigers to 9-3 and 1-3 in the MIAA. The Lions, who have a seven-game win-streak snapped, fall to 9-2 and 3-1 in the MIAA.

James Fleming hit a three-pointer to close out the first half giving FHSU a five-point lead at halftime. His steal and layup with 9:33 to play pushed the lead to 12. Southern closed within six but could never get any closer.

Fort Hays State shot only 44-percent for the game but hit 5-of-13 from beyond the arc (4-9 in the second half) and hit 21-of-27 free throws. The Tigers outrebounded MSSU by five.

Late run lifts Missouri Southern over Lady Tigers

Missouri Southern used an 18-4 to build a six-point lead with 2:18 to play and defeat the Fort Hays State Lady Tigers 76-71 Saturday at the Leggett & Platt Center in Joplin. The loss snaps the Tigers three-game win streak as they fall to 8-2 overall and 2-2 in the MIAA while the Lions improve to 9-2 and 3-1 in the conference.

The Lady Tigers built an eight-point lead with 8:39 to play but were hurt their cause with 20 turnovers and 53-percent free throw shootong (22-41). The Lions outrebounded FHSU by four and hit 32-of-43 from the foul line.

FHSU led by five at halftime thanks to an 8-0 run to close out the half. The Tigers shot a scorching 56-percent over the first 20 minutes while holding the Lions to 1-of-8 shooting over the final five minutes of the half.

Kate Lehman led the Tigers with 17 points and 15 rebounds but hit just one field goal in the final 9:45 of the game and was just 5-for-13 from the free throw line. Kate Edwards added 17 points and nine boards

The Lions were led by Sharese Jones who scored 18.
