Fort Hays State Drops Second Straight Overtime Game

The Fort Hays State Tigers couldn’t hold onto an eight point second half lead on Saturday and drop their second straight game in overtime falling 82-79 to Missouri Western Saturday at the MWU fieldhouse in St. Joseph.

Fort Hays trailed by four at halftime, but put together a 13-0 run to go up eight with 6:31 to play. They had a chance to win in regulation, but a Craig Nicholson three pointer bounced off the back of the rim. Missouri Western took control hitting two  consecutive three-pointers in the overtime period to go up by six. Fort Hays would get as close as one but could never grab the lead.

Tigers put five in double figures lead by Craig Nicholson who scored a game high 23 points, but only had three assists with six turnovers of FHSU’s 16 turnovers. Dwayne Brunson added 16 points, Tomislav Gabric chipped in with 12  while Carson Konrade and James Fleming both added 10. The loss drops the Tigers to 7-2 overall and 0-2 in the MIAA.

Tony Hobson Picks Up 500th Career Win in Lady Tigers Victory at Missouri Western

The Fort Hays State Lady Tigers used a 12-2 run late in the first half to build an 18 point lead, they would lead by as many as 22 in the second half and defeat Missouri Western 67-53 Saturday afternoon at the MWU field house in St. Joseph. The win improves the Lady Tigers to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAA. It also was coach Tony Hobson’t 500th career victory which includes stops at Barton and Cloud Community Colleges as well as Hastings [Neb.] College.

Fort Hays State was led by Kate Lehman who scored a game high 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, also blocking 8 shots. Tera Ingalsbe added 10 for the Lady Tigers.

The Fort Hays State Tiger nearly overcome their worst shooting game of the season but miss some key free throws down the stretch and fall to Central Missouri 93-85 in overtime in the conference opener for both Thursday night at the Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg. The loss drops the Tigers to 7-1 while the Mules improve to 7-1.

The Tigers trailed by 13 in the first half after a 15-0 Mules run, but they would answer by scoring the next nine and trailed by three at the half. Central pushed the lead to seven in the second half before an 11-3 FHSU run put then up one. A Carson Konrade three-pointer gave the Tigers a 70-67 lead with 1:23 to play, but Craig Nicholson, who hit his first nine free throw attempts, missed three of four down the stretch. He did hit one with less than four seconds to play to force the OT.

Carson Konrade hist six three’s and led the Tigers with a career-high 30 points. Dwayne Brunson added 17 points and 10 boards and Nicholson chipped in with 16 points and 11 boards.

The Tigers shoot a season-low 39-percent and were outrebounded by 24. The Mules hit 52-percent from the floor and were 12-of-14 from the foul line in the overtime period.

Lady Tigers Can’t Overcome Cold Shooting, Lost at No. 8 Central Missouri

The Fort Hays State Tigers couldn’t overcome a poor shooting night and fall to No. 8 Central Missouri 72-51 Thursday night at the Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg. The Jennies built a 10-point halftime lead and led by as many as 18 early in the second half thanks to a 21-4 run.

The Tigers, who trailed by as many as 26 late in the game, shoot 28-percent for the game and were outrebounded by 18. The Jennies outscored the Tigers 40-20 in the paint and 28-9 in second chance points.

Kate Lehman led the Lady Tigers with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Katelyn Edwards added 13 points.

The loss drops FHSU to 5-1 while the Jennis improve to 7-1.

Micheal Jordan Named to All-Super Region Team

http://www.horizonappliance.com/Fort Hays State junior defensive back Micheal Jordan was named to the Daktronics All-Super Region 3 First Team, released on Thursday, December 5. Jordan was one of two players to earn first-team honors at safety.

The Kerens, Texas native is the fourth Daktronics All-Super Region selection under head coach Chris Brown. He is the first to earn first-team honors since 2011, when Alex Whitehill (LB) and Ethan Kosjer (P) were each named to the first team in Super Region 4.

Jordan led FHSU and tied for the MIAA lead in interceptions during the regular season with five. That mark tied the eighth-most in a single season at FHSU. He ranked third on the team in tackles with 70 and had three pass break-ups, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery.

FHSU Wrestling Ranked 20th in Latest Poll

http://www.horizonappliance.com/The Fort Hays State University wrestling team made its 2013-14 debut at No. 20 in the NCAA Division II wrestling poll, released Wednesday by the Wrestling Coaches Association.

FHSU received 17 votes in the poll, and has competed at the Central Missouri Open and the Nebraska-Kearney Open so far this season.

The Tigers are in action this Saturday, Dec. 7, as they host the Bob Smith Open at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Yeverino, Cabral Named to All-America Team

http://www.horizonappliance.com/After the most successful season in school history, the Fort Hays State University men’s soccer team had two players – Diego Cabral and Ricardo Yeverino – named honorable mention on the 2013 Daktronics NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer All-America Team, as announced by Daktronics on Wednesday.

The duo has combined to hold nearly every offensive school record, and helped the Tigers finish 12-5-3 en route to reaching the finals in the Central Regional of the NCAA Tournament.

Yeverino, a senior from Dodge City, Kan., led the Tigers with 28 points on the season, scoring 11 goals and adding six assists.  In 1,485 minutes of action, Yeverino had a .585 shot on goal percentage and four game-winners.  The forward finished his career with just less than 3,000 minutes logged (2,994) and 26 goals.  In two years of wearing an FHSU jersey, Yeverino rose atop the school’s career record book in points per game (1.75), goals (26), goals per game (0.72), game-winning goals (eight), shots per game (3.89), shots on goal (79) and shots on goal per game (2.19).  Additionally, Yeverino is second in career points (63), assists (11), assists per game (0.31) and shots (140).

Cabral, a junior from Asuncion, Paraguay, finished the 2013 season with 23 points, notching seven assists and eight goals.  As a midfielder/forward combination, Cabral played 1,598 minutes and had two game winners while adding 48 corner kicks and had a .481 shots on goal percentage.  Cabral has played three seasons for the Tigers and holds career records in points (66), assists (26), assists per game (0.46) and shots attempted (158).  Cabral is second in career points per game (1.16), goals (20), shots per game (2.77), shots on goal (77), shots on goal per game (1.35) and penalty kicks made (three).

FHSU Baseball Announces Signing

http://www.horizonappliance.com/Fort Hays State head baseball coach Steve Johnson announced the signing of Connor Boyer from Southeast of Saline High School in Gypsum, Kan. Boyer is currently a senior in high school and will join the program in 2014-15.

Boyer, a pitcher and corner infielder, is a two-time first team all-league selection at Southeast of Saline. As a junior in 2013, he hit .578 with 27 RBI and 37 runs scored, while helping the Trojans to a league title. He played American Legion ball for the Salina Pestinger Falcons in the summer of 2013, hitting .370 with 31 RBI and 41 runs scored. As a pitcher for the Falcons, he posted a 0.98 ERA and 18 strikeouts in 14.1 innings of work.

“We are excited to have Connor join the Tiger Baseball family next year,” said Johnson. “He does a great job both on the field and in the classroom and we’re looking for great things out of him in the future here at Fort Hays State.”

FHSU’s Trent Named CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-American for Second Straight Year

Fort Hays State junior defensive lineman Jesse Trent has been named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Team for 2013, his second straight year to earn the honor. Trent was named to the second team for the second year in a row. He was just one of eight defensive linemen in NCAA Division II named to the Academic All-America Team.

Trent is a Biology major from Dodge City, Kan. Entering the 2013 fall semester, Trent held a GPA of 3.98. Trent started all 11 games for the Tigers in 2013 on the defensive line and tied for eighth on the team in tackles with 41. He had seven tackles for loss and a half sack to his credit, helping the Tigers to a 6-5 record for their first winning season since 2009. He has started 22 consecutive games for FHSU dating back to the start of his sophomore year of

FHSU Jumps Five Spots in NABC Top-25 Poll

The Fort Hays State men’s basketball team jumps five spots to No. 15 in the latest NABC Division II basketball poll. The Tigers are one of two MIAA teams ranked this week with the debut of Washburn at No. 22. Northeastern State, who had been ranked since the start of the season, drops out.

The Lady Tigers are receiving votes in the women’s poll and are the seventh highest non-ranked school receiving votes.

Lady Tigers continue climb in WBCA/USA Today poll

The Fort Hays State University women’s basketball team continued to climb in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today poll, receiving 49 votes in the latest version, released Tuesday (Dec. 3). The Tigers received 23 votes in the previous poll.

FHSU is 5-0 on the season and outscoring opponents by an average of 41.2 points in each game. The squad travels to No. 8 Central Missouri on Thursday for its conference opener at 5:30 p.m. in Warrensburg, Mo.
