FHSU Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Adams State

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
The Tiger men’s soccer team scored early and held on late for a 1-0 victory over Adams State in Alamosa, Colo., on Sunday.

Ricardo Yeverino scored just 14:46 into the game on an assist by Diego Cabral, and Fort Hays State University (3-1) shook off 11 second half shots from ASU (2-1) to clinch the win.

Yeverino had four shots in the contest, while Cabral added four attempts (two of which were on goal). Jaccob Rangel was the other Tiger to have multiple shot attempts, as he finished with two.

Jason Babyak started his third consecutive match at goalie for the Tigers, playing all 90 minutes and saving seven shot attempts from ASU.

FHSU out-shot ASU 9-4 in the opening 45 minutes, but would slow down on offense as the game wore on, attempting just four shots in the second frame.  ASU awoke in the final 45 minutes, but five saves by Babyak would crush any hopes of an ASU comeback.

The Tigers will return home next weekend for a conference matchup with Southern Nazarene on Friday, Sept. 20, and a non-conference matchup with Newman on Sunday, Sept. 22.

FHSU Women’s Cross Country Wins Romp at the Ridge

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State University’s women’s cross country team completed a sweep of its events last week, posting a near perfect score at the Romp at the Ridge, hosted by McPherson College in Hutchinson, Kan., on Saturday, Sept. 14.  The team also won the Delgo Invitational in Garden City, Kan., on Thursday, Sept. 12.

FHSU’s team score of 16 was just one point off a perfect mark, as the Tigers finished with four runners in the top five, and all five scorers in the top six.

Ramsey McCarter won the 5,000 meter run in 20:07.40, followed by Marie Schaller (20:22.70) and Micki Krezesinski (20:24.20) in second and third.  Hanna Robinson’s time of 20:26.60 put her close behind in fourth place.  Hutchinson’s Kaylah Romine snuck in at 20:36.70 to round out the top five, just beating FHSU’s Kylie Gaughan, who finished sixth in 20:40.00.

Alex Nelson (20:44.70) and Katey Whitesell (21:14.70) also found a place in the top 10 for the Tigers, finishing in seventh and 10th, respectively.  FHSU’s two other runners were Jordan Ortega (21:38.00) in 14th, and Michelle Kleper (21:50.00) in 17th.

In the team competition, FHSU finished 60 points ahead of second place Hutchinson, and 86 points ahead of Dodge City, which took third.

FHSU Men’s Soccer Wins in 2OT

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
In a physical contest that saw six yellow cards distributed, Fort Hays State University men’s soccer used a double overtime goal by Michael Cole to grab a 1-0 win over Colorado Mesa on Friday evening, in Mesa, Colorado.

Cole’s first goal of the season came in the 107th minute (106:41), ending the game on a shot near the near post.

While Cole’s second shot of the game was the only goal, FHSU’s Tanner Brock and Ricardo Yeverino each had two shots. Daniel Peralta had the Tigers’ other shot attempt.

Jason Babyak played the entire match in goal, saving five shots to shut out the Mavericks.

CMU (1-2) out-shot FHSU (2-1), 8-1 in the first half, though just one shot for the Mavericks was on goal.

With the teams scoreless through the full 90 minutes, FHSU and CMU were sent to overtime, where two 10-minute periods would potentially decide a winner and loser.   The Tigers had three shots over those final 17 minutes, including Cole’s game-winner.

Yeverino (37:30), Cole (37:30), Drew Wilson (48:03), Diego Cabral (97:25) and Brock (105:41) all had yellow cards for the Tigers, while just one was given to CMU.

FHSU Women’s Soccer Falls at UCCS

http://www.horizonappliance.com/

Fort Hays State University’s women’s soccer team fell, 3-0, to UC-Colorado Springs on the road, Friday night.

FHSU (2-2-0) took 10 shots on the game, including eight in the second half, but UCCS (3-0) notched two late goals to squash any hopes of a Tiger comeback.

Ceynada Guzman and Ember Albertson each had two shot attempts in the game, while Jamie Babyak, Amanda Talbott and Albertson had FHSU’s three shots on goal.

Nicole Barnaba had five saves in just over 58 minutes in goal, before Kelsey Grey played the final 31:58.

20 different Tigers saw action in the game, played on a field that was nearly underwater earlier in the day.

Offense was limited in the first half for the Tigers, as FHSU took just two shots (both on goal).  Babyak took aim during the 15th minute while Albertson fired a shot at 32:28 – both of which found the keeper’s mitts.

For UCCS, 10 first half shots (four of which were on goal) marked a period of aggressive play for the Mountain Lions. Just over 24 minutes into the match, Hannah Levett’s header off an Agnes Arnadottir pass found the net.  Brooke Tominello also assisted on the play.

FHSU picked up the offense in the second half, firing eight shots, though just one shot on goal, over the final 45 minutes of the half, but it wasn’t enough as UCCS scored twice more.  Talbott put her shot on goal with the clock reading 74:25, but it was saved by goalie Kelly Schroeder.

At 51:44, head coach Craig Shaw was issued a yellow card, and just before the 59th minute, goalie Nicole Barnaba was ejected with a red card.

Tigers Look To Bounce Back at Washburn

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State football coach Chris Brown spent nine years in Topeka as Washburn’s defensive coordinator and saw first hand the Ichabods transformation from a lower tier team into an annual contender in the MIAA. Brown is hoping to follow that same blueprint used by Ichabod coach Craig Schurig in turning the Tiger gridiron fortunes around.

“It took some time to get there. It wasn’t until our fifth of sixth year where we won the conference” Brown said. “It’s recruiting the right kids, getting the kids in your system that are competitive and want to be there and want to work hard and pay the price to win.”

Now in his third season as the Tigers head coach, Brown feels he’s starting to get those players “We’ve got those kids now and they’re starting to do the things we want them to do. They’re very competitive kids and they want to win and you can see that in their eyes when they’re on the practice field and during the games.”

Fort Hays State will get a first hand look at the 2013 version of the Ichabods this Saturday when the two meet at Yager Stadium in Topeka at 6pm. Washburn is coming off a 58-20 rout of Nebraska-Kearney in their opener last Thursday, taking advantage of seven Loper turnovers in the win.

Fort Hays State lost 43-13 at home to Emporia State in their opener. The Tigers gave up four big plays in that game which led to Hornet scores and transfer defensive back Nathan Lindsey says it’s an area they hope to improve on this week “We’ve got to be more sound fundamentally” Lindsey said. “Mental errors, that was really the big thing. We’ve been working really hard this week to make sure we don’t have the mental errors against Washburn.”

Washburn returns their starting quarterback in junior Mitch Buhler who completed 16 of 29 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown in the win over UNK. Last year Buhler threw four first half touchdown passes in the Ichabods win in Hays. He also has one of the best receivers in the MIAA to throw to. DeJuan Beard returns after missing all of last season due to injury. Beard, who had five catches last week, was a second-team All-MIAA and honorable mention All-American pick as a sophomore in 2011.

The Ichabods have won the last four in the series and nine of the last 11 and have beaten the Tigers by an identical 45-20 score each of the last two seasons.

Saturday’s game kicks off at 6pm. You can hear it live on Tiger Radio Mix-103 and online at http://socialstreamingplayer.crystalmedianetworks.com/radio/kjls beginning at 5pm with the Auto World Pregame Show.

Women’s Soccer Rolls to Win at Northwestern Oklahoma State

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State pushed its overall record to 2-1 by cruising to a 5-1 win at Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday (Sept. 10) in Alva, Okla. The Tigers built a 2-0 lead at halftime, then blew the match open with three more in the second half before NWOSU tallied the final goal.

Five different players scored goals for the Tigers. Hailey Davey opened the scoring in the 12th minute on an assist from Hannah Jurgens. Nearly four minutes later in the 16th minute, Dani Harris tallied a goal with help from Jordan Shaw.

Jordan Hester and Sabrina Van Horn each tallied their second goals of the season to make it 4-0, also only about four minutes apart in the 58th and 62nd minutes. Davey added a helper to give her three points in the match (goal and assist) and Jurgens recorded her second assist of the day on the Van Horn goal. Kylee Loneker capped the scoring for FHSU in the 77th minute on a pass from Ember Albertson.

A goal by Kaitlyn O’Toole of NWOSU broke up the shutout bid for FHSU goalkeeper Nicole Barnaba, but she still finished with four saves to move to 1-1 on the season. The Tigers outshot the Rangers 26-12 in the match.

Fort Hays State continues a five-match road stretch this weekend in Colorado with matches at UC-Colorado Springs on Friday and CSU-Pueblo on Sunday.
