Tiger Volleyball Drops Finale in Hawaii

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State University fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a 3-0 (25-12, 25-20, 25-14) loss to Hawaii-Hilo on Monday evening in Hilo, Hawaii.

The Tigers (0-5) struggled on offense, hitting .070 as a team, compared to UHH’s (5-0) hitting percentage of .287.

Sara Hewson would provide a bright spot for FHSU, as she blasted a season-high 12 kills (hitting .312) while adding nine digs, close behind team leader Makenzie Weinman, who had 12 digs. Libby Ary would assist in 11 kills, and Kelsey Broadwell had eight.

After falling behind 0-4 to start the match, FHSU answered back on a 4-3 run to pull within three (7-4).  From there, HHU would pull ahead 11-5, but a quick three-point run put FHSU right back in the mix. That, however, was short-lived, as HHU tore off on a 10-1 run (including a seven-point unanswered streak) to run away for good, winning the set, 25-11.

FHSU hit .000 in the first game, as the Vulcans’ Callie Aberle dug out seven attacks and the Tigers had seven attack errors.  Schwartz led the team with three kills in the set, while Hewson had two kills and four digs.

Looking to rebound in game two, FHSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead, helped by two Hewson kills.  They would hold the lead until HHU tied it up, 5-5.  The teams would trade points during the next four rallies, before HHU rattled off two unanswered, only to be answered by a four-point Tiger comeback.

With the score sitting at 11-11, FHSU took advantage of two HHU errors and Mares kill to pull ahead by three, only to see the Vulcans tie it again, 16-16, then take an 18-16 advantage.  The Tigers would not go away, pulling within one at 19-20.  From there, HHU jumped out to lead by three (22-19) before an FHSU timeout.  The Tigers would force a side-out at 23-20, but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling 25-20.

The Tigers would raise their hitting percentage above .000 in the second match, using 14 team kills (including five from Hewson), to head into the third set hitting .068.  Ary would have five assists in the second frame, while Weinman increased her digs to eight with six in the set.

FHSU would never lead in the third, with a 2-1 deficit being as close as the Tigers would come.  With the score at 7-5, Hilo used a five-point run to pull ahead by seven (12-5), putting FHSU in an insurmountable hole.  The Tigers fell in game three, 25-14.

The Tigers return home from their Hawaii trip next Thursday, and will compete again on Tuesday, Sept. 17, against Nebraska-Kearney at 7 p.m. in Kearney, Neb.

FHSU Women’s Soccer Notches First Win of Season

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State women’s soccer team picked up its first win of the 2013 season on Sunday afternoon at the FHSU Soccer Stadium by a count of 3-0 over the University of Sioux Falls. Fort Hays State built a 2-0 lead by halftime and tacked on one more goal for insurance in the second half to move to 1-1 overall on the season.

Sabrina Van Horn picked up the first goal of the season for FHSU by flicking the ball over the USF keeper’s head in the 21st minute of the game. Jamie Babyak got the ball to Van Horn over the top of the defense on a free kick from near midfield.

Jordan Hester, Fort Hays State’s top goal scorer in 2012, picked up her first of the season in the 40th minute when she beat a defender off a touch pass from Hannah Jurgens.

Abby Cinotto , like Van Horn, picked up her first collegiate goal in the second half on a nice crossing pass in the box from Amanda Talbott. Cinotto just had to tap the ball into the net once Talbott’s pass got by the USF goalkeeper.

Kelsey Grey picked up the win in goal for FHSU with one save. She moved to 1-0 on the season. Corrin Cook took the loss for USF, dropping to 0-2 on the season. Cook had six saves in goal as nine of the 12 shots by FHSU were put on goal. Fort Hays State outshot Sioux Falls 12-4 in the match.

The Tigers head on the road for five consecutive matches, starting Tuesday at Northwestern Oklahoma State in Alva, Okla.

FHSU Volleyball Still Winless in Hawaii

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
The early season woes continued for Fort Hays State University on Saturday, as the Tigers dropped their final two matches of the Hawaii Invitational.

FHSU (0-4) fell to Lewis (1-2) in four sets, 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19), and dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-13, 25-19) contest against Hawaii Pacific (4-0).

FHSU spread out its offensive attack for the Lewis match, as five different players had at least six kills, led by Madison Scwartz’s nine. Jenna Ulrich and Taylor Mares were close behind with eight kills.

Kelsey Broadwell’s 20 assists were an early-season game high, and Makenzie Weinman had 13 digs (Schwartz and Sara Hewson each had eight).

FHSU would never lead in game one, tying it twice before the score sat at 8-8, but fell behind for good after that as Lewis went on runs of five, three and six unanswered points to close out the game, 25-16.

Weinman provided a spark on the defensive end during the first set, digging out five balls.

In game two, the Tigers would lead 1-0, but fall behind until late in the match, when a kill by Hewson (from Schwartz) knotted the score at 17-all.  Schwartz would then re-tie the game at 21-21 with an ace, though FHSU couldn’t pull off the rally – as the Flyers’ outscored the Tigers, 4-1, to close out a 25-22 set victory.

Hewson had five kills in the second frame, while Schwartz and Rebekah Spainhour each had a solo block.

Down two games to zero, FHSU would fall behind in the third set 3-0, but storm back out to an 11-3 lead, holding strong until a Flyer rally at 20-14 closed the deficit to two (21-19).  Lewis tied the match at 24-24, but a Spainhour kill and a Lewis error would give FHSU the set.

FHSU hit just .107 as a team in the third set, though the team limited Lewis to a .058 hitting percentage.

During the fourth frame, the Tigers hung tough until the score was 13-13, when Lewis would start pulling away gradually, using a 4-0 run to pull ahead for good, as the match ended on a kill at 25-19.

In the second game of the day, FHSU hit .264 as a team in the first frame, as Ulrich (four kills) and Spainhour (one kill) each hit .500.  Defensively, Hewson had four kills and Ary notched seven assists.

FHSU fell behind early in the match, but would continually tie it up until taking a 12-10 lead on Schwartz’s kill.  HPU would catch FHSU at 14, though, and close out the set on a 10-5 run to take the set, 25-19.

HPU took control in the second set with the score 10-5, going on a 9-1 run (including a span of six unanswered points) to take a 19-6 lead.  The Sea Warriors would win the second game, 25-13.

The final game of the night saw FHSU lead (or hold a tie) 12-11 before a seven-point run would propel HPU to 18-12 lead.   The Tigers would answer the run with a quick three-point rally of their own – eventually closing the deficit to four (22-18) – but couldn’t extend the match, losing 25-19.

In the HPU match, Ulrich led the team with 11 kills, followed by Schwartz’s eight.  The setter, Ary, had 19 assists while five different Tigers had five digs (Schwartz, Hewson, Hoekman, Hubert and Weinman) in the contest.

FHSU has the day off tomorrow before traveling to Hilo, Hawaii on Monday for a matchup with Hawaii-Hilo.  The game is slated for 7 p.m. HT / Midnight CT.

FHSU Volleyball Come Up Short Against No. 5 BYU-Hawaii

http://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State University dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) contest with No. 5 BYU-Hawaii on Friday evening in Laie, Hawaii. The Tigers drop to 0-2 on the season while BYU now sits at 4-0.

Jenna Ulrich led the team with nine kills, while Taylor Mares followed up Thursday night’s strong performance with an eight kill evening.  Ulrich hit .350 while Mares’ percentage was .250.  Using a two-setter cycle, Kelsey Broadwell racked up 17 assists and Libby Ary had 14.

The Tigers’ defense was tested throughout the night from BYU’s strong attack, and Mackenzie Weinman stepped up the challenge, digging out 20 attacks to keep FHSU close.

In game one, FHSU trailed just once until the match was tied 9-9, but couldn’t pull away, eventually relinquishing the lead and needing to battle from behind.  The Tigers would hang tough throughout, pulling within one at 20-19, 21-20, 22-21 and 23-22, but couldn’t get over the hump and dropped the first set, 25-23.

BYU would hold the lead throughout game two, limiting the Tigers to a .128 hitting percentage (and five attack errors), to take the set, 25-18.

After the intermission, FHSU would answer back strongly, hitting .216 with a service ace and 12 kills as a team.  The teams would trade points until 7-7, when the Tigers rattled off a 5-1 run to lead, 12-8.  That lead, however, would shrink until BYU tied the game, 13-13.

FHSU wouldn’t falter, though, and once again attempted to pull away, but were unable to.  Down 15-17, BYU would run off four unanswered points to take the lead, 19-17.  The pesky Tigers, though, tied the match at 22 and 23, showing resilience until a two-point rally ended the match, 25-23.

FHSU travels to Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, Hawaii tomorrow to close out the Hawaii Invitational.  The Tigers will take on Lewis University at Noon HT (5 p.m. CT) and HPU at 6 p.m. HT (11 p.m. CT).

After a timeout with score tied at 11, the Tigers took a 15-11 lead, but couldn’t pull away, relinquishing the lead at 22-21.  From there, the teams would trade points until 26-26, when Schwartz broke the stalemate with a kill, and a block by Ulrich clinched the game, 28-26.

In game two, FHSU would jump out to a 2-0 lead, but couldn’t hold the advantage for long, allowing CU to take a 5-3 lead.  The Tigers, however, used a 7-2 run to take a 10-7 lead, including a stretch of three unanswered points.

Down 18-16, a kill by Mares and block by Ulrich and Schwartz tied the match up, setting the stage for another close finish.  CU would attempt to pull away with a 21-19 lead, but FHSU would not go away, eventually tying the game at 22.  The Silver Swords, however, would take the game, 25-22.

Coming out of intermission, FHSU fell behind 5-3, but the score would be tied five more times (at 5, 7, 9, 10, 13) before FHSU took a 14-13 lead.  The back-and-forth contest saw FHSU take an 18-16 lead and hold the two-point advantage until 21-19, when CU went on a 5-1 run to take a 24-22 lead.  FHSU would pull within one, but were unable to rally further, falling 25-23.
