FHSU Softball Falls One Spot in NFCA Top-25

The Fort Hays State softball team drops one spot to No. 18 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, released on Wednesday, April 3. The Tigers drop a spot despite going 4-0 in MIAA play last week. The Tigers had a record of 27-5 when the poll was conducted, but now sit at 29-5 after a doubleheader sweep of Panhandle State on Tuesday.

Fort Hays State, Central Oklahoma, and Missouri Western all remain in the poll this week as representatives from the MIAA. Central Oklahoma also dropped one spot in the rankings to No. 10 with a record of 25-7 and Missouri Western held steady in the No. 24 spot with a record of 24-8.

Fort Hays State and Missouri Western will have a Top 25 showdown in Hays on Friday, which begins a key weekend for the Tigers at home. FHSU also faces Northwest Missouri State on Saturday. Both Missouri Western and Northwest Missouri State are in the upper half of the MIAA standings. Fort Hays State and Central Oklahoma lead the MIAA, each at 9-1, while Missouri Western is just a game back at 8-2 and Northwest Missouri is 6-4.

FHSU Women’s Golf Finishes Second at Regis Invite

FHSU-WGLF-HobsonThe Fort Hays State women’s golf team finished second at the Regis Invitational at Fox Hollow in Lakewood, Colorado.

The Tigers, who were in fifth place after a 349 in the first round Monday, shoot a 329 in the second round but still finished 46 strokes behind first place Regis.

Samantha Hobson fired a 3-over 75 on Tuesday, the second lowest round of the tournament to finished alone in second place at 12-over, 10 shots out of first. Carmen Thompson finished 10th with a 167 and Megen DeWerff was 12th with a 169.

No. 17 FHSU Softball Sweeps Oklahoma-Panhandle State

FHSU-SB-VaupelThe 17th-ranked Tiger softball team ran their winning streak to seven with a doubleheader sweep of Oklahoma-Panhandle State Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium in Hays. The Tigers rallied with a run in the bottom of the seventh to win the opener 2-1 then run-ruled the Aggies 9-1 in the second game. FHSU is now 29-5 on the season.

Game 1: No. 17 Fort Hays State 2, Panhandle State 1
Kellsi Olsen’s walk-off single with two outs in the seventh scored Amanda Vaupal from second to lift the Tigers to the win. Olsen’s heriocs came after the Aggies scored a the tying run in the sixth with a two-out double.

Olsen tripled to lead off the third and scored on Bianca Adame’s RBI single giving Fort Hays State the 1-0 lead.

Maddie Holub held the Aggies to three hits, two of them in the sixth, striking out 14 and walking just one. She’s moves to 15-1 with the complete game win.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 9, Panhandle State 1
The Tigers strung together five consecutive singles, scoring three runs in the first inning. Amanda Vaupel drove in one run and Tori Beltz the other two.

Maddie Holub hit a three-run homer and Amanda Vaupel a two-run shot to highlight the Tigers six-run fourth inning which put the game away. Courtney Dobson added an RBI single. Holub’s home run was her 14th of the season, which sets a new single-season record, passing Jessika Anastos’ 13 in 2008.

Paxton Duran (12-4) picks up the win, allowing one run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 4.0 innings. Jordan Jones pitched the final inning allowing two hits and striking out one.

Holub Named MIAA Softball Pitcher of the Week

FHSU-SB-HolubHolub threw the second complete game no-hitter of her career on Friday at Truman in a 1-0 victory. She faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing a walk and hit-by-pitch, while striking out nine. She helped her own cause in the no-hit performance, producing the only run for FHSU with a solo home run.

On Saturday, she allowed just one hit and one run in a five-inning run-rule win over Lindenwood. She struck out nine batters in that game as well. Then, with FHSU grabbing a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning of game two at Lindenwood, she entered to pitch the final two innings and earn her third save of the season. For the week, she averaged 1.5 strikeouts per inning and held opponents to an .045 batting average.

Holub moved to 14-1 overall on the season with wins in her two starts.The 5-7 senior pitcher is native of Hays, Kan. where she competed at Thomas More Prep-Marian High School.

FHSU’s McPhail Named MIAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week

Makayla McPhailFort Hays State junior javelin thrower Makayla McPhail has been named the MIAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week for her efforts this past weekend at the Alex Francis Classic in Hays.

In her first competition of the spring, McPhail won the women’s javelin competition at the Alex Francis Classic in Hays. Her throw of 154’5″ is second best in the nation, just four inches off the best throw in the nation so far this year. She broke her own meet record with the throw and was just five inches off her own stadium record.

The distance is an automatic qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships as she is now one of four athletes with an automatic qualifying mark in the event.

McPhail was the national runner-up in the javelin last year.

No. 17 Tiger Softball Takes Two at Lindenwood

FHSU-SB-HolubThe Fort Hays State softball team ran their winning streak to five with a doubleheader sweep of Lindenwood Saturday afternoon in St. Charles, Missouri. The Tigers were 11-1, five inning run-rule winners in game one then scored the go-ahead run on a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the sixth and win the second contest 3-2. The Tigers are now 27-5 overall and 9-1 in the MIAA. The Lions have lost seven of their last nine and are now 11-17 and 4-8 in the MIAA.

Game 1: #17 Fort Hays State 11, Lindenwood 1 (5 innings)
Maddie Holub (14-1) backed up her no-hitter at Truman the day before with a complete-game one-hitter Saturday against the Lions. The TMP-Marian senior allowed the one run on one hit, striking out nine and walking none.

Amanda Vaupel and Danie Brinkmann both drove in three. Brinkmann had a two-run single in the Tigers five-run fourth. Vaupel added a two-run double in FHSU’s three-run fifth.

Holub added a solo homer, her 14th of the season, in the Tigers two-run second.

Game 2: #17 Fort Hays State 3, Lindenwood  2
Maddie Holub drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and lift the Tigers to the sweep. A Jenna Lang double and two walks loaded the bases for Holub who then recorded the final six outs for her third save of the season.

Holub walked two in the sixth but managed to work out of a bases-loaded jam with two strike outs to end the sixth. Holub induced a grounder to first base to end the game after giving up a two-out double.

Paxton Duran (11-4) picks up the win, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out three and walking three.

The Tigers grabbed an early 2-0 lead, scoring one in the first on a throwing error and one in the second on a Courtney Dobson single.

The Lions scored two in the fifth to tie the game.

FHSU Baseball Series Finale at Southwest Baptist Cancelled

The final game of Fort Hays State’s three-game baseball series Saturday at Southwest Baptist has been cancelled due to rain in Bolivar, Mo. Saturday’s game will not be made up.

The two teams split the doubleheader on Friday.

The Tigers are back at home Wednesday for a 2pm doubleheader against Nebraska-Kearney which you can heard on KAYS (1400-AM) and Hays Post.

Tiger Baseball Splits at Southwest Baptist

FHSU-BSB-WadeThe Fort Hays State baseball team split their doubleheader at Southwest Baptist Friday. The Bearcats held the Tigers to one run on six hits in a 5-1 win in game one. The Tigers bounced back, scoring 13 runs on 20 hits, to win game two 13-4. Fort Hays State is now 15-13 overall and 11-12 in the MIAA. The Bearcats are 10-15 overall and 10-11 in the conference. The two  close 0ut their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 1pm.

Game 1: Southwest Baptist 5, Fort Hays State 1
The Bearcats used a pair of two-out doubles to fuel their five-run fourth inning. The Tigers had grabbed a 1-0 lead on Jordan Miller’s RBI single in the second.

Alex Ellison (2-5) takes the complete game loss, allowing just one earned run on nine hits, striking out three and walking two.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 13, Southwest Baptist 3
The Tigers broke a 1-1 tie, scoring four in the sixth. They then blew the game open with a seven-run eighth. They added one in the ninth for the final margin.

Clayton Garland’s RBI single in the first gave the Tigers the early lead.

Kelton Rule’s one-out RBI single in the sixth gave the Tigers the lead for good. Shane Wade made it 3-1 with a double down the left field line. Chris Santoscoy drove in the final two runs of the inning with a two-out single to right.

Rule hit a solo homer and Ryan Busboom a three-run shot in the Tigers seven-run eighth. Jay Sanders triple to left and drove in another run.

Sam Thornton homered in the ninth.

Clayton Garland and Shane Wade both had four hits.

Tayler Davis (4-2) gets the win, allowing all four runs, one earned, on six hits striking out seven and walking one.

Holub Carries No. 17 FHSU Softball to Sweep Over Truman

FHSU-SB-HolubThe Fort Hays State softball team didn’t allow a run as they Truman 1-0 and 4-0 Friday afternoon in Kirksville, Missouri.  The No. 17 ranked Tigers have now won 12 of their last and improve to 25-5 overall and 7-1 in the MIAA. Truman falls to 16-8 and 4-4 in the conference.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 1, Truman 0
Maddie Holub throws the second complete game no-hitter in her career and the sixth no-hitter in FHSU history. Holub (13-1) struck out nine while walking one.

Holub’s solo home run in the third inning was the game’s only run.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 4, Truman 0
Maddie Holub tied the FHSU single-season record for home runs in a season with her 13th. Her first inning solo shot gave the Tigers all of the runs they would need for the doubleheader sweep. The Tigers scored two in the third on a throwing error and wild pitch. A bases-loaded walk in the fourth produced the final run for the Tigers.

Paxton Duran (10-4) gets the complete game shutout victory allowing six hits while striking out five and walking one.



6-Run First Carries FHSU Baseball Past Newman

FHSU-BSB-SandersThe Fort Hays State Tigers scored nine runs in the first three innings as they run their winning streak to three with a 12-5 rout of Newman Wednesday evening  in Wichita.

Jay Sanders hit a two-out grand slam in the first to give the Tigers the lead for good. Horace Johnson added a solo homer in the same inning, helping the Tigers move to 14-12 overall.

Johnson had four of the Tigers 16 hits and drove in three. Sanders finished with five RBIs.

Chase Newman picked up his first win of the season, allowing two runs on five hits over 5.0 innings.

Fort Hays State returns to MIAA play Friday at Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats split a pair of extra inning games with Central Missouri on Wednesday.

Tiger Softball Slips To No. 17 in Latest National Poll

FHSU-SB-HolubFort Hays State softball is ranked No. 17 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, released on Wednesday. The Tigers dropped six spots in the rankings after a pair of losses last week amid a six game stretch in which they went 4-2.

Fort Hays State entered the poll for the first time in the school’s NCAA history three weeks ago on March 13 at No. 21 in the nation. Following a 4-0 week on the road in conference play, FHSU jumped all the way to No. 11 in last week’s poll, before sliding back to No. 17 this week.

Fort Hays State is one of three schools from the MIAA referenced in the Top 25 this week, which includes Central Oklahoma at No. 9 and Missouri Western at No. 24.

The Tigers return to conference action this week with a pair of road doubleheaders at Truman and Lindenwood. Following the trip, FHSU returns home for six consecutive doubleheaders. The Tigers have only played four contests at home so far this season.

FHSU’s Saravia Named MIAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week

FHSU-TF-SaraviaGabriela Saravia has been named the MIAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week  for her efforts in the high jump this past week at the UT-Arlington Bobby Lane Invitational.

Saravia topped a field of 19 competitors with a height of 5-feet, 8.75-inches, a new career best. With that effort, she moved to second on the NCAA Division II national performance list with the best provisional mark posted yet this spring for the outdoor season.
