FHSU Softball Sweeps Nebraska-Kearney

The Fort Hays State softball team continued a swing of non-conference games on Tuesday afternoon against Nebraska-Kearney. The Tigers, who dropped three of four games over the weekend, rebounded huge against the Lopers and picked up wins by scores of 6-2 and 7-4. The wins improve the Tigers’ record to 23-15 as they resume MIAA play this weekend.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 6, Nebraska-Kearney 2
The first game of the doubleheader was a pitcher’s duel early, with neither team plating a run in the first four innings of the game. All of the scoring occurred in a wild fifth inning and the Tigers took advantage of three Loper errors to score their six runs.

Madison Putman and Taylor Nelson both reached on UNK errors and were standing on second and third base, respectively, when Callie Wright came through with an RBI double to the left center gap. Wright then stole third and came around to score after the catcher’s throw went into left field. Maddie Holub and Adriana Wortley both walked and would also come around to score on an Amanda Vaupel RBI single and Kellsi Olsen RBI double.

Holub went the distance for the Tigers in the circle, striking out 10 and allowing four hits and two runs. She pushes her record to 13-8 on the year with the win.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 7, Nebraska-Kearney 4
Fort Hays State got the bats going early in the second game, scoring four runs in the opening inning. They were once again aided by Loper miscues, however, as UNK had three errors in the inning. Holub and Vaupel each picked up RBI’s in the inning as the Tigers took a 4-0 lead after half inning.

Nebraska-Kearney picked up a run in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the second to make it interesting, but Katelyn Shattleroe and Abby Morrison combined to shut the Lopers down between the third and sixth innings.

The Tigers added three runs in the fifth inning on a sac fly from Holub and a two-run double by Adriana Wortley to extend the lead to 7-3 going into the final two innings. UNK picked up a run in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 7-4, and they would get two runners on in the bottom of the seventh, but Holub returned to the circle for the final inning and picked up her fourth save of the season.

Shattleroe started the game for the Tigers, pitching the first three innings and allowing five hits and three runs. Morrison pitched the next three innings and picked up the win, moving to 3-4 on the year. Holub came in to finish the game and picked up her fourth save of the season, setting a new Fort Hays State single-season record.

Fort Hays State will resume conference play this weekend, heading to Truman on Friday and Northwest Missouri State on Saturday for conference doubleheaders.

FHSU’s Busboom MIAA Hitter Of The Week

(Photo/Ron Hart)

Fort Hays State junior outfielder Ryan Busboom earned MIAA Baseball Hitter of the Week honors for April 2-8 as selected by a panel of MIAA sports information directors. Busboom earns the honor for his efforts in the four-game sweep of Pittsburg State this past weekend in Hays.

Busboom produced seven of his nine RBI on the weekend in the 25-5 blowout win over Pittsburg State on Saturday, the third game of the series. He produced the first run of a six-run first inning for the Tigers with a sacrifice fly RBI, then pushed Fort Hays State’s advantage to 8-2 in the second inning with a RBI double. His 3-run home run in the fifth pushed the FHSU lead to 14-5. He delivered a bases-loaded 2-RBI single in the sixth, part of an 11-run inning for the Tigers.

Busboom was key in a pair of close wins for FHSU. His RBI single in the third inning of the first game of the series broke a 1-1 tie in the third. That run would hold up as the winning run in a complete game effort by pitcher Shawn Lewick. In the final game of the series, he triggered the FHSU comeback from trailing 4-0 with a solo home run in the sixth. He doubled and scored in the seventh, an inning where the Tigers scored four runs to overtake PSU and go on to win 5-4.

In the second game of the series Friday, he had two doubles in the second and third innings and came around to score both times in an 11-6 win.

Seven of the 10 hits he had in the series went for extra bases, which included five doubles and two home runs. Busboom also had a key assist from the outfield in the first game of the series, cutting down the potential tying run at the plate on a single in the fourth inning that ended the inning. By hitting .625 (10-for-16) in the series against PSU, Busboom took over the team lead in batting average for the season, now at .405. He has 22 extra-base hits to his credit this year, which includes 12 doubles and 10 home runs, and leads the team in RBI with 43 as of April 9.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 25, Pittsburg State 5
A strong wind blowing out at Larks Park in Game 1 aided the Tigers in scoring their most runs in a game this season. After falling down 1-0 on a PSU homer to start the game, the Tigers rallied for six in the bottom of the first and never looked back in the blowout win.

FHSU would go on to open up a 14-5 lead after five innings, then errupted for 11 runs in the sixth, an inning that saw the Tigers hit two of their six home runs in the game.

Ryan Busboom and Shane Wade both had huge performances at the plate, each recording seven RBI. Busboom had a sacrifice fly RBI in the first, an RBI double in the second, a three-run home run in the fifth, and a two-RBI double in the sixth. Wade also had a sacrifice fly RBI in the first, followed by an RBI double in the second, a solo home run in the fourth, and a grand slam homer in the sixth. Wade was one of two Tigers to hit two home runs in the game. Luke Kordsmeier plated all three of his RBI on a pair of home runs, a two-run shot in the first and a solo shot in the sixth right after Wade’s grand slam.

Nash Smith also had three RBI in the game for FHSU with a solo home run in the second and a two-RBI double in the sixth. Anthony Salinas, JC Ochoa and Sam Thornton all recorded one RBI each.

After pitching around trouble in the first inning, FHSU starter Jesse Hart settled in to throw 4 2/3 innings in a winning effort. He moved to 2-0 on the season. Three of the five runs he allowed were earned. He allowed seven hits, walked two, and struck out two. Taylor Davis closed the door on Pitt State over the final 2.1 innings with no hits allowed, two walks, and one strikeout.

Dustin Ulrich suffered the loss for Pittsburg State, allowing the first nine runs of the game to FHSU in 1.1 innings of work.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 5, Pittsburg State 4
After all the runs scored in the first game, the wind died down in the second game and a pitcher’s dual ensued between Andy Lewton of FHSU and George Brandecker of Pittsburg State.

The pitchers put goose eggs on the board through the first three innings before Pittsburg State scratched out its first run in the fourth on a RBI groundout to first base unassisted by Ryan Bilovesky with one out. After JC Ochoa touched first, he threw home, but the runner got in under the tag just in time to give the Gorillas the advantage.

With that run in the fourth, PSU snapped a 10-inning scoreless streak by Lewton, who threw shutout baseball over his final seven innings at Emporia State the previous week in a complete game effort.

The Gorillas added on in the sixth with three runs on a pair of singles and a couple of doubles that each fell along the right field line just out of the reach of FHSU right fielder Nash Smith. The doubles set up the run-producing singles by Ryan Reddick and Luke Bordewick. The Bordewick single plated two with two outs.

The Tigers looked poised to make a furious rally in the sixth, but a leadoff home run by Ryan Busboom was all they could plate for runs in the inning. Nash Smith flied out to right field with the bases loaded to end the inning on the first pitch thrown by reliever Cody Wren. Brandecker finished with 5.2 innings thrown for PSU, allowing just one run on eight hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

An error by Pittsburg State to start the seventh would be key in starting Fort Hays State’s four-run rally in the inning. A Mace Krol grounder looked as though it would lead to a double play, but Pittsburg State could only get one out on the play. Busboom followed that with a double to put runners at second and third with one out. JC Ochoa responded with a two-RBI single to close the gap to 4-3. He moved up to second on a throwing error by the PSU left fielder.

That set up the game-tying RBI-single by Brandon Hoefler. Hoefler then moved up to second on a groundout to the pitcher by Luke Kordsmeier, which would have been the end of the inning if the error did not happen to start the inning. Jay Sanders delivered in the clutch for FHSU with another RBI single to put the Tigers on top.

Lewton responded by retiring the PSU side in order in the eighth to finish his gritty effort. Lewton went 8.0 innings and threw 126 pitches. He scattered eight hits and allowed one walk, while striking out three.

Brett Macari entered in the ninth to pick up his second save of the season and preserve the win for Lewton, who moved to 4-2 on the season. After getting a weak groundout to start the inning, the Gorillas had a pair of seeing-eye singles that put runners at first and second with just the one out. Macari got a double play grounder to end the game off the bat of Austin Lastimado.

FHSU Softball Splits With Northeastern State

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Fort Hays State softball team snapped a seven-game streak with a 1-0 win over Northeastern State in the first game on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Stadium. The Tigers were unable to sustain the momentum in the second game, falling to the Riverhawks 13-0 in six innings. Fort Hays State is now 21-15 (7-5 MIAA) on the year.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 1, Northeastern State 0
Maddie Holub was very effective pitching for the Tigers in the first game, throwing a four-hit shutout. Holub struck out 14 Riverhawk batters, including the side in the first and second innings, and picked up the win to move to 12-8 on the year.

The Tiger offense managed just four hits as well, but they were able to push across a run in the bottom of the second. FHSU loaded the bases with two outs in the second and Kellsi Olsen came across to score on the wild pitch, which proved to be the deciding run.

Game 2: Northeastern State 13, Fort Hays State 0 (5 inn.)
NSU scored two runs in the top of the first inning to jump on top and FHSU was unable to recover in the second game of the day. The Riverhawks blew the game open in the third inning, but they were aided by three crucial Tiger errors. Northeastern State went on to put up 11 runs on the board in the inning and make the score 13-0.

The Tiger offense again struggled, picking up just two hits and failing to score a run for the third time in four games. Abby Morrison started the game and recorded each out, but allowed nine hits and four earned runs. Kaitlin Shattleroe briefly relieved Morrison in the third inning, but she allowed three hits and seven runs without recording an out. Morrison took the loss for FHSU, dropping to 2-4 on the year.

Fort Hays State has their final three road series of the season ahead, starting with a doubleheader at Nebraska-Kearney on Tuesday starting at 12:00 pm.

Strong Starting Pitching Lifts FHSU Baseball To Sweep Of Pittsburg State

The Tigers picked up a pair of wins over Pittsburg State on Saturday (Apr. 6) at Larks Park in Hays by scores of 2-1 and 11-6. Strong pitching efforts from Shawn Lewick and Alex Ellison helped the Tigers get the doubleheader sweep. The wins pushed FHSU to 13-15 overall and 11-12 in the MIAA, while Pittsburg State dropped to 11-16 overall and 9-11 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Fort Hays State 2, Pittsburg State 1
All of the scoring for both teams in the first game happened in the third inning. Chase Barnes delivered a two-out base hit RBI that put Pitt State up 1-0.

After failing to pick up a hit in the first two innings, Fort Hays State broke through in the bottom of the third with its only two runs off PSU starter Matt Stalcup. FHSU also did all its damage with two outs. The first run scored on a wild pitch, then Ryan Busboom would deliver an RBI single to give FHSU the lead.

That’s all Shawn Lewick needed as he blanked the Gorillas over the final four innings on the hill. He worked around a leadoff single in the seventh to preserve the FHSU win and his complete game effort. He scattered seven hits and walked two, while striking out four. Lewick moved to 3-2 on the season with the win.

Stalcup took the loss for Pitt State, also in a complete game effort. He went 6.0 innings, allowing five hits and three walks with five strikeouts.

Game 2: Fort Hays State 11, Pittsburg State 6
The Tigers did all of their damage in the second and third innings. FHSU plated five runs in the second and six in the third to pull away early from the Gorillas.

Brandon Hoefler triggered the scoring in the second with an RBI single. Chris Santoscoy would later follow with a two-RBI double, then Nash Smith hit a two-run homer, both with two outs to push the lead to 5-0.

After the Gorillas scored a single run in the top of the third, Mace Krol immediately got the run back with a solo home run to make it 6-1. Ryan Busboom scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch, then Shane Wade delivered and RBI single to make it 8-1. Santoscoy picked his third RBI of the game up on a sacrifice bunt to make it 9-1. The Gorillas helped FHSU claim the final two runs of the inning when they committed an error on what would have been the final out of the inning. A run scored on that play and then led to an RBI single by Sheldon Howell to cap the six-run rally.

Alex Ellison had his strongest outing of the year on the mound. He retired the first seven batters of the game before allowing a hit in the third. He retired the side in the first inning on three consecutive strikeouts. He lasted 7.0 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) with six hits. He struck out six and did not allow a walk. Ellison is now 1-4 on the season.

Nathan Zimmerman relieved Ellison to breeze through the eighth before running into some trouble in the ninth. Kyle Leroy entered in a non-save situation to get the final two outs of the game and stop a bases-loaded rally by the Gorillas in the final inning.

Jake Stevenson took the loss for Pittsburg State, lasting just 2.0 innings and allowing eight runs.

Game 1: #4 Central Oklahoma 1, Fort Hays State 0
The Tigers had chances early in the first game to get on the board, but stranded a pair of runners in both the first and second innings. While FHSU was unable to manage much offense, the pitching of Maddie Holub and the Tiger defense kept the game close throughout.

Holub pitched a complete game and set a new single-season school record for strikeouts in the top of the first inning. She struck out six for the game, giving her 196 for the year, but allowed the lone run on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the sixth inning. She took the tough loss, dropping her record to 11-8 on the season.

Fort Hays State recorded four hits in the game, with all of them coming in the games first three innings. Central Oklahoma outhit the Tigers 6-4 and both teams stranded six runners on base. Fort Hays State senior Andy Lewton pitched a complete-game helping the Fort Hays State baseball team avoid a sweep at No. 28 Emporia State with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon.

Lewton allowed his only two runs of the game in the second inning, allowing four of the Hornets 10 hits in that frame.

Nash Smith’s two-out, three-run homer in the fifth pushed the Tigers up 3-2. Sheldon Howell added a two-out, two-run triple down the left field line in the seventh to extend the lead to 5-2.

Lewton struck out only one but didn’t allow a walk. He worked around a pair ninth inning singles, getting the final out on a ground ball.

With the win, Fort Hays State moves to 11-15 overall and 9-12 in the MIAA with the win.

FHSU Baseball Drops Two at Emporia State

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Fort Hays State baseball team suffered two more setbacks against 28th-ranked Emporia State on Saturday (Mar. 31), falling by scores of 17-5 and 6-5 in 10 innings. The second game took three extra innings in what was just a scheduled seven-inning contest. FHSU is now 10-15 overall and 8-11 in the MIAA.

Game 1: Emporia State 17, Fort Hays State 5
Just like on Friday evening, the Tigers took the lead first, only to see it slip away once again. FHSU went up 2-0 in the third inning on an RBI single by Mace Krol followed by an RBI groundout by Ryan Busboom.

That lead didn’t last long as Emporia State struck for eight runs in the bottom of the third and took control of the game. ESU led off that inning with a home run, then proceeded to record four singles and a walk over the next five batters. ESU capped that flurry with a 3-run home run by Joe Vaskas to go up 7-2. The Honets picked up one more run on a single later in the inning.

Five of the eight runs in that inning were charged to FHSU starter Alex Ellison, who threw tw0 scoreless frames before not being able to record an out in the third. Tayler Davis surrendered the final three runs of the inning.

Davis went on to surrender seven runs (five earned) in the game, giving up the other four in another eight-run inning for the Hornets, which occurred in the fifth. Chase Newman recorded just one out in the fifth and surrenderd the other four runs in the inning. Andy Hammeke recorded the final two outs of the inning without allowing a run. Ethan Weber surrendered ESU’s final run in the sixth, working an inning of relief.

The Tigers looked to be making a run at the Hornets after falling down 8-2 through three innings. FHSU cut the lead to 8-4 in the fourth on a Shane Wade RBI single and Nash Smith RBI sacrifice fly. JC Ochoa hit a solo home run in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-5, which would turn out to be the last run for FHSU.

Ellison dropped to 0-4 on the year with the loss. Derek Brooks moved to 5-0 on the year with the win for ESU. He allowed all five runs to FHSU.

Game 2: Emporia State 6, Fort Hays State 5 (10 innings)
The Tigers held one-run advantages in heading to the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings in extra frames, but Emporia State tied the game each time to force the game into the 10th.

After FHSU capitalized on errors by the ESU third baseman to score single runs in the eighth and ninth innings, Emporia State responded in the bottom half of each inning with solo home runs off FHSU closer Brett Macari to extend the game. The home run by Dorain Williams in the eighth came with two outs when it looked as though FHSU was going to escape with a split. Joe Kornbrust led off the ESU ninth with his home run.

FHSU was one out away from getting out of the ESU 10th, but a throwing error by shortstop Sheldon Howell earlier in the inning came back to bite the Tigers. The throwing error allowed the winning run to reach second after getting on by single. After Macari got the second out on a flyout, Ashton McCoy delivered the game-winning RBI single.

Emporia State led 3-1 after two innings, the only run for FHSU on a Brandon Hoefler home run. The Tigers finally tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth with a Luke Kordsmeier solo home run and Nash Smith RBI double. The rest of the scoring came in extra innings for both teams.

Jesse Hart allowed the first three runs to ESU, going 2.0 innings in a start with three hits and two walks allowed with one strikeout. Connor Beer and Kyle Leroy provided four innings of scoreless relief for FHSU, Beer lasting 1.1 innings and Leroy 3.2. Both allowed just two hits each. Macari moved to 2-1 with the loss. Two of the three runs he allowed were earned, the unearned being the game winner. He struck out three and allowed five hits over 2.2 innings.

FHSU Softball Drops Two At No. 25 Emporia State

(FHSU Athletics Photo)

The Fort Hays State softball team, facing a top-25 opponent for the second straight day, dropped a pair of games against No. 25 Emporia State on Saturday afternoon (March 31) in Emporia, Kan. The Tigers, who fell by scores of 2-1 and 6-4, are now 20-12 (7-5 MIAA) on the year.

Game 1: No. 25 Emporia State 2, Fort Hays State 1
Reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Week Maddie Holub threw well in the first game, but for the second straight day the other Tigers’ opponent scored all their runs against her in one inning.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third after an RBI double from Callie Wright scored Yasnaya Susoeff , but they were limited to just the one run in the game.

Holub was rolling early, allowing just one hit to the Lady Hornets in the game’s first four innings. However, ESU got a leadoff home run in the fifth and got three more hits and another run to go on top 2-1. After the Lady Hornets loaded the bases, FHSU ended the inning with a double play when right fielder Breanna Beckerman gunned down an ESU runner at the plate.

Fort Hays State mounted a final rally in the top of the seventh inning, getting singles from Amanda Vaupel and Christine Moses, but they were unable to push either across and fell 2-1.

Holub took the loss after allowing two runs on five hits. She also struck out nine batters but has her record fall to 11-7.

Game 2: No. 25 Emporia State 6, Fort Hays State 4
Fort Hays State committed six errors and allowed all six ESU runs, with only two being earned, in the game’s opening two innings to put themselves in a hole in game two. Kaitlyn Shattleroe started the game, but was removed in the first inning after allowing three runs without recording an out.

Abby Morrison relieved Shattleroe and got out of the first inning, but the Lady Hornets added three more runs in the second inning after FHSU committed two more errors.

The Tigers did fight back, scoring two runs in the top of the third on an RBI double from Holub. Madison Putman doubled to lead off the inning and Taylor Nelson followed that with a single. Both would come around to score on Holub’s hit and cut the ESU lead to 6-2.

FHSU got three hits in the top of the sixth inning and were aided by two Lady Hornet errors as they plated two more runs. Adriana Wortley walked to open the inning and Vaupel followed with a single before advancing to second on an ESU error. Chelsey Rottinghaus singled to score Wortley and Vaupel scored on another Lady Hornet error before Emporia State turned a double play to end the FHSU rally with runners on first and third.

Shattleroe took the loss and falls to 7-2 on the season.

Fort Hays State will be back at home next weekend, facing Central Oklahoma on Friday (April 6) and Northeastern State on Saturday (April 7) in non-conference doubleheaders.
