Stuffed animal toss at FHSU basketball game will benefit Toys for Tots

There will be a stuffed animal toss at halftime of the Fort Hays State University men’s basketball game for the second consecutive year to benefit Toys for Tots.

The games against Emporia State will begin at 2 p.m Dec. 8.

Anyone bringing a new stuffed animal will receive a $5 general admission ticket. Halftime activities will include everyone throwing their stuffed animals onto the court, where they will be collected for Toys for Tots.

The goal this year is to completely cover the court with stuffed animals.

Agudelo Named to United Soccer Coaches All-America Team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Junior Santiago Agudelo has been named to the United Soccer Coaches Division II Men’s Soccer All-America Team. Agudelo earned second-team honors as a forward.

Agudelo had a big year for the Tigers as he led the nation in seven categories; goals (26), total points (58), shots per match (5.82), shots on goal per match (3.29), game-winning goals (eight), goals per match (1.53) and points per match (3.41). Agudelo set team records for all seven of these categories, including shots (100) and shots on goal (57) for the season. He converted a goal in a program-record seven-consecutive matches, breaking the previous record of six (Abdoulaye Cisse, 2017). In addition to these season records, Agudelo set the record for points in a match (10), goals in a match (five), shots in a match (13) and shots on goal in a match (eight). The Frisco, Texas native recorded four hat tricks throughout the season.

Agudelo adds this honor to D2CCA National Player of the Year, D22CA All-America First Team honors, MIAA Player of the Year, All-MIAA First Team honors, D2CCA Central Region Player of the Year and D2CCA & United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region First Team honors for the year.

Three Tigers named to D2CCA All-America team; Agudelo National Player of the Year

POMONA, Calif. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team had three Tigers named to the D2CCA All-America Team for the 2018 season. Forward Santiago Agudelo, defender Luis Torres and goalkeeper Fernando Pina earned accolades. Agudelo was named D2CCA National Player of the Year.

Torres was named a second-team selection as a defender. Torres was a dominant force along the defensive line for the Tigers. He led the Tigers in minutes played on the pitch (1,690) as well as scoring five goals and adding two assists to his ledger for a total of 12 points on the season. Torres makes his second All-America team as a defender (2016). He adds this honor to All-MIAA First Team honors and D2CCA & United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region First Team honors for the year.

Pina was named a third-team selection as a goalkeeper. He ranked 12th in the country in goals against average (.634) and save percentage (.829). Pina earned a 12-0-1 record in goal for the Tigers, one win shy of tying the program record for wins in a season.

Wright leads Tigers past Central Christian

HAYS, Kan. – Freshman Nyjee Wright scored a career-high 14 points and Fort Hays State held Central Christian 46 points below their season average in a 71-46 win Tuesday at Gross Coliseum. Wright went 3 for 5 from beyond the arc and also dished out two assists. Trey O’Neil hit two threes to key an 8-0 run to close out the first half and scored 13.

Game Highlights

The Tigers (4-3) went on a 16-4 run midway through the first half to go up 13 and led to 19 at halftime. They scored the first five points of the second half and led by as many as 28 down the stretch.

Central Christian (6-1), who averaged 92 points per game, was held to 18 in the first half and shot only 33-percent.

Jubril Osagie and Steve Kuminga, the top two scorers for CCC who averaged over 30 between them, were held to five.

FHSU’s Brady Werth and Marcus Cooper were both held scoreless in the first half and finished with 10 points between them.

Five Tigers earn United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region honors

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Fort Hays State men’s soccer team had five Tigers honored with United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region selections for the 2018 season. Patino, a senior midfielder, was named to the D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team and earned All-MIAA First Team honors. He leads the team in assists (ten). This is Patino’s first selection on the United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region team.

Fierro, a senior defender, was named to the D2CCA All-Central Region Second Team and earned All-MIAA First Team honors. He ranks fourth on the squad in minutes played on the pitch (1,603).

Pina, a senior goalkeeper, was a force in goal for the Tigers in 2018. He ranked 12th in the country in goals against average (.634) and save percentage (.829). Pina was named to the D2CCA All-Central Region First Team and earned All-MIAA First Team honors.

Torres, a senior defender, was named to the D2CCA All-Central Region First Team and earned All-MIAA First Team honors. He led the team in minutes played on the pitch this season (1,690). Torres scored five goals and added two assists for a total of 12 points. This is Torres’ third straight honor on the United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) All-Central Region team.

10 of the 11 members of the United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region team represent the MIAA. Northeastern State earned four spots, while Lindenwood garnered one spot on the team.

Sanchez, Perkins earn United Soccer All-Central Region mentions

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Following an 11-7-2 overall record and an appearance in the MIAA semifinals, two Fort Hays State women’s soccer student-athletes have captured another honor to cap off their season. Senior midfielder Vianei Sanchez and freshman forward Cailey Perkins were among the selections of this year’s United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region team.

Sanchez, a native of McKinney, Texas, earned a spot on the Second Team, while Perkins, from Manhattan, Kan. notched a place on the Third Team. With the mentions, the two athletes become just the sixth and seventh Tiger to land on the list. Last season, Eden Stoddard was the lone FHSU athlete mentioned on the list with her Third Team selection.

Sanchez made her name in the Central Region following a senior season, in which she accumulated five goals and three assists. She also attempted 23 shots with 12 on goal while starting in all 20 matches for the Tigers. Through her 1,645 minutes on the pitch this season, Sanchez was the third-highest scorer in 2018 for FHSU to finish out her career.

Perkins led all Tigers in goals this season, connecting on eight alongside seven assists. She attempted a team-high 39 shots with 24 hitting on frame. Perkins earned a start in all 20 matches for her freshman campaign to total 1,465 minutes in action. Two of her goals were accounted as game-winners to lead the Tigers to victory.

Earlier this season, Sanchez was named First Team All-MIAA, while Perkins captured a Second Team honor.

Alongside Sanchez and Perkins, 13 other MIAA performers notched a spot on the list. Central Oklahoma led the conference with five selections, all on the First Team.

#11 Tigers move to 5-0 winning over Chadron State

The Tigers first half shooting was cold as the snowy weather in Kearney, Nebraska on Sunday but excellent free throw shooting propelled Fort Hays State to a 36-22 lead by halftime.  Chadron State led twice at 4-2 and 6-4 before the Tigers scored nine straight points for a 13-6 lead.  The Tigers 18-10 after one quarter and pushed the lead to 28-14 forcing an Eagles’ timeout.

Fort Hays State didn’t score a field goal over the final 4:52 of the second quarter but made 8 of 10 free throws attempts for a 36-22 half time lead.  Belle Barbieri, Carly Heim, Tatyana Legette, and Kacey Kennett all hit free throws over that stretch.  The Tigers shot just 32% in the first half but made 13 of 15 charity shots.

Highlights

 

The free throws continued through the second half for Fort Hays State as they made 9 of 11 in the third quarter and 9-12 in the fourth on their way to an 89-59 victory.  The Tigers did warm up to 41% shooting for the game after making 15 of 28 shots in the second half.  Fort Hays State forced 28 turnovers and scored 33 points on those plays.

Lanie Page led the way with 16, Tatyana Legette scored 14 and Kacey Kennett added 10.  Legette made 9 of 12 free throw attempts and pushed her career free throw makes to 252.

The #11 Tigers are 5-0 on the year while Chadron State has lost five in a row and are 1-5.

Late first half, early second half run keys Tigers past Sterling College

HAYS, Kan. – Brady Werth scored a game-high 22 points and Aaron Nicholson tied a career-high with four 3-pointers to lead Fort Hays State to a 99-73 win over Sterling College at Gross Coliseum.

The Tigers (3-3) trailed by five midway through the first half before closing the first period on a 16-5 run to build an eight point halftime lead.

FHSU opened the second half with an 11-3 run to build the lead to 16 and were up as many as 28 late in the contest.

Werth was one of five Tigers to score in double-figures and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

The Tigers outrebounded the Warriors (1-3) 15 and outscored them 24-7 on second chance points.

Nicholson scored 17 on 4-of-10 shooting beyond the arc and dished out four assists. Trey O’Neil also hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 off the bench. Jared Vitztum added 11 and Kyler Kinnamon 10 along with eight assists.

FHSU shot 47-percent from the floor and were 15-of-35 from beyond the arc. Sterling connected on 46-percent and went 10-for-23 from 3-point range.

The Fort Hays State Women are using the post-Thanksgiving weekend to meet up with two Rocky Mountain Athletic teams in Kearney, Nebraska.  The Tigers opened the UNK Crossover Tournament with The University of Colorado – Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs led twice early at 2-0 and 4-3.  Fort Hays State took the lead on a 8-0 run and never trailed again.  Belle Barbieri scored the first six points of the run on her way to eight first half points.  Colorado Springs cut the lead down to 11-9 with three minutes to go in the first quarter.  The Tigers then embarked on a 18-3 run that went into the second quarter.  During the run six different players scored and resulted in a 29-12 lead for Fort Hays State.

The Tigers kept the lead in double figures for rest of the half leading 40-21 at halftime.

The Tigers opened the second half on a 9-3 run, pushed their lead as high as 26 in the third quarter before leading 60-36 heading to the final quarter.  An early 11-0 run in the fourth quarter by Fort Hays State pushed the lead as high as 33 and eventually an 80-52 victory.

Highlights

 

Belle Barbieri scored a career high 14 and led all scorers.  Tatyana Legette added 13 and Kacey Kennett dropped in 11.  The Tigers played 14 players, 12 scored and 10 played double digit minutes.

The #11 Tigers move to 4-0 on the year, Colorado Springs is now 0-3.  Fort Hays State will play Chadron State on Sunday at the same location in Kearney, Nebraska.

Late free throws lift Newman past Tigers

WICHITA, Kan. – Marshawn Blackmon hit two free throws with four seconds to play to lift the Newman Jets to a 76-75 win over Fort Hays State Tuesday at Fugate Gymnasium. It’s only the second time Newman (3-2) has beaten the Tigers (2-3) in the last 25 meetings between the two.

The two free throws came after Brady Werth banked in a jumper with 13 seconds left to give the Tigers a 75-74 lead.

The Tigers shot 53-percent from the floor and went 10-of-22 from beyond the arc but were hurt by 17 turnovers which resulted in 27 Jets points.

Newman outscored the Tigers by eight at the free throw line and hit 16 of their 19 foul shots in the second half.

Marcus Cooper led four Tigers in double-figures with 16 points. Aaron Nicholson, who hit a corner three with 1:13 to play to put FHSU up 72-70, added 14, 10 of them in the second half. Kyler Kinnamon scored 13 before fouling out and Brady Werth added 11 despite playing only 17 minutes because of foul trouble.

WICHITA, Kan. – Lanie Page scored a season-high 20 points, Carly Heim added 11 and Tatyana Legette pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Fort Hays State women to a 72-60 win over Newman Tuesday at Fugate Gymnasium.

The Tigers (3-0) used a 16-4 first half run to build an 11-point lead and were up 38-30 at the half. They pushed the lead to 14 early in the fourth quarter only to see it trimmed to seven late in the game.

Lanie Page then was fouled on a layup. The three-point pushed the lead to 10 to put the game out of reach.

The Tigers overcame a tough night at the foul line, hitting only 16 of their 30 free throws.

Werth named MIAA Men’s Basketball Co-Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State senior forward Brady Werth earned MIAA Men’s Basketball Co-Athlete of the Week honors on Monday (Nov. 19) for his efforts in Fort Hays State’s two non-conference wins this past weekend in Hays.

Werth helped Fort Hays State to a pair of non-conference victories last week, nearly averaging a double-double at 18.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. He scored a season-high 27 points in a 75-71 overtime win against Colorado School of Mines, while pulling down 11 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. In a 67-51 win over UC-Colorado Springs, he had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Werth joins Grant Lozoya of Pittsburg State for the weekly honor from the conference office. Lozoya had 25 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in Pittsburg State’s 79-71 win over Arkansas-Fort Smith.
