Tiger Baseball Turns First Triple Play in 16 Years in Season Finale

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Fort Hays State baseball team scored two early runs before dropping the final game of the regular season Sunday afternoon (May 6) to Missouri Southern, 17-2. The Tigers wrap up the regular season 13-37 overall and 5-31 in MIAA play, while the Lions finish the year 27-23 and 15-21 in league action.

The Tiger defense saved the best for last, as they turned a rare feat in the home half of the sixth inning. In Tyler Renninson’s first frame of work, the righty allowed two runners to reach base before inducing a sharp ground ball to third base. Alex Weiss scooped up the ball and quickly tagged third before whipping a throw towards second. Ryan Grasser corralled the toss and tapped on the bag before firing the ball towards Dayton Pomeroy at first who completed the first triple play in more than 16 years (5/1/02, 2nd inning vs. Central Christian, Smith-Santangelo-Dreher).

Offensively the Tigers were limited to just five hits, with three coming in the third and two coming in the seventh. Addison Kaasch worked a leadoff walk before singles from Clayton Basgall and Weiss quickly loaded the bases. Grasser put the Tigers on the board with a base knock to center two batters later, plating a pair.

Missouri Southern kept things rolling at the plate in the home half of the first, with a pair of home runs adding up to four runs. The Lions continued to pour it on moving forward, compiling 14 hits, including four long balls, to score their 17 runs.

The Tigers, meanwhile, went stagnant at the plate, with 19 batters being retired in order after Grasser’s RBI single in the first. Colton Helm and Jonathan Mariani both collected singles off the bench in the seventh inning, but a pop up ended the game with two men aboard.

Ryan Ruder (4-9) took the loss after allowing five runs in one-plus innings of work.

Wright is a native of North Platte, Nebraska.

Beaulieu was a member of the Tiger women’s soccer team for four years from 2014-2017. Wilkerson slam not enough in Tigers series finale with Griffons

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team was unable to bounce back from a slow start Sunday afternoon (April 29) against Missouri Western, dropping the series finale 13-5. The Tigers honored the 2018 senior class before their final home game of the season.

Fort Hays State is now 13-34 on the year and 5-28 in MIAA play, while the Griffons are now 26-21 overall and 18-15 in league acton, all but locking up a spot in the MIAA tournament.

Missouri Western took control early, sending 10 to the plate in the top of the first to accumulate six runs. They stretched the lead to 9-0 with three more runs in the third.

After struggling to solve Griffon starter Jacob Miller (8-2) over the first five innings, collecting just two hits, the Tiger offense came alive in the bottom of the sixth. An MWSU error kicked off the big inning with Alex Weiss following with a double to right center, extending his career-long hitting streak to 15 games.

Dayton Pomeroy worked a walk to load the bases before Ryan Grasser came to the plate with the bases loaded. The junior punched a single to right, plating the first Tiger run of the game. Jordan Wilkerson followed with a towering grand slam over the fence in left field, fighting the wind blowing in all the way. With one swing of the bat, the centerfielder drove in four RBI for just the second game this season, crushing his ninth home run of the season in the process and closing the gap to 9-5.

Missouri Western added four runs over the final two innings off the Tiger bullpen, while the Griffon bullpen thwarted the Tiger offense over the final three frames, not allowing a baserunner. Wilkerson added a highlight reel catch in the top of the ninth, diving to make a grab just before the ball hit the grass in left center.

Grasser was the lone Tiger with multiple hits, collecting two of FHSU’s six base knocks on the day. Ben Ramberg (2-6) took the loss while Tanner Smith tossed 4.1 effective innings out of the pen, striking out seven and allowing just one unearned run. Senior Alex Ruxlow struck out three over three innings in his final home game.

The Tigers are set to wrap up the regular season next weekend with a three-game series against Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo. (May 4-6). First pitch in Friday’s opener is set for 6 p.m.

Tiger baseball falls to Lopers in season series finale

HAYS, Kan. – The Fort Hays State baseball team was defeated by Nebraska-Kearney in the all-time series and season series finale on Wednesday (April 25), 11-8. The Tigers dip to 13-31 overall and 5-25 in the MIAA, while the Lopers moved to 25-19 on the year and 18-11 in conference play.

Steve Johnson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

The Lopers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the top of the first frame thanks to a grand slam by Scott Platt chased Tiger starter Zach Rothert from the mound. Alex Ruxlow was called upon in relief of Rothert with two outs in the inning by throwing three pitches and inducing a fly ball to right field.

Ruxlow made quick work of the Loper lineup in the next three innings as he retired his first six batters faced, including 11 out of 15 before allowing his first run on a long ball in the fifth inning.

Fort Hays State took advantage of Loper starter Brown coming out of the game when Alex Weiss put life into the Tiger faithful with a two-run double to right center, plating Ryan Grasser. Addison Kaasch and Weiss then scored on back-to-back RBI groundouts from Cody Starkel and Dayton Pomeroy, respectively. The Tigers trailed the Lopers 5-3 after four innings of play.

UNK earned a run back on a solo shot to left field in the fifth and another three runs in the sixth. FHSU wasn’t done yet as Marcus Altman roped a 2 RBI single to the gap in right center, scoring Pomeroy and Weiss. After Jordan Wilkerson earned a free pass to first, freshman catcher Dawson Sramek picked a great time to belt his first long ball of the season. Sramek crushed a 2-2 pitch over the left center field wall for a 3-run blast, pulling the Tigers within a run after six innings of play.

The Tigers were shut down the final three innings as UNK was able to tack on a couple insurance runs in the eighth and ninth frames.

Zach Rothert was charged with the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in 0.2 of an inning. Weiss continued his hot streak with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Sramek also picked up a couple of hits in the contest on 2-for-4 at the dish.

The Tigers are back in action this weekend as they host Missouri Western for their final home conference series of the season (April 27-29). Friday’s ball game is part of the Pack the Park night at Larks Park. First pitch for game one is slated for 7 p.m.
