Bacon ready to lead FHSU receiving corps

Tyler Bacon led Fort Hays State with 38 receptions last season. With graduation of seniors Isaiah Maxi and Bilal Salat, Bacon is set to lead the wide receiver corps again in 2017. The Quapaw, Okla. native is the only senior in a group that returns junior Kenton Ubelaker and sophomores Layne Bieberle and Andrew Jay who all had at least one reception last season.

With the addition of junior college transfers Monterio Burchfield and Harley Hazlett from Garden City CC, Bacon feels wide receiver could be a strength this season.

Fort Hays State football holds first scrimmage of fall

The Fort Hays State football team held their first fall scrimmage Saturday morning at Lewis Field Stadium. The scrimmage lasted about one hour and featured offense vs. defense. Junior quarterback Jacob Mezera took all the first team snaps on offense while reserve quarterbacks Jacoby Williams and Brad Schencker shared snaps for the second team offense. The defense did their job early. Despite no live tackling being allowed, the first and second team defenses held both offenses to just two Brandon Brown field goals in the first five possessions.

The second team offense broke the trend when Williams threw a five-yard touchdown to a leaping J.J. Lewis in the left corner of the endzone on 4th and goal.

On the following drive, Mezera hit sophomore Charles Tigner on a three-yard touchdown pass on 1st & goal.

The final touchdown score was a 25 yard run from scrimmage by Molijah Gilbert, a freshman running back from Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Brandon Brown went 5/5 on field goals during the scrimmage, three of which were over 40 yards including a 47-yard field goal.

Tiger coach Chris Brown was pleased with how his defense started out the scrimmage…

Sophomore receiver Andrew Jay talked about the talent at the receiver position and the work they put in over the summer…

Junior quarterback Jacob Mezera has a lot of talent around him…

The Tigers are coming off of back-to-back postseason appearances and will open the season on Thursday, August 31st against Missouri Southern at Joplin Missouri.

FHSU adds offensive line depth for 2017

One area of emphasis for the Fort Hays State coaching staff this off season was offensive line. Season-ending injuries to freshman Pat Kelly and Brandon Gonzales left the Tigers thin up front.

Kelly and Gonzales are back along with returning starters Travis Talley and Donald Blackmon and Romello Burke. Add in two junior college transfers and eight high school freshman and the Tigers have much added depth.

Senior Travis Talley leads the group with 15 career starts, the most among any on the offensive line.

FHSU women’s soccer tabbed fourth in MIAA for third-straight preseason

Coming off a strong season which saw Fort Hays State capture a share of the MIAA regular season crown, the Tigers head into the 2017 season picked fourth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The newest rankings were released on Thursday (Aug. 10).

Earlier this month, the Tigers also captured its first-ever national ranking as they came in at No. 14 in the nation. Last season, Fort Hays State went 15-5-3, while boasting a 10-1-0 record in the conference. After earning a share of the MIAA title in 2016, the Tigers have now finished in the top third of the MIAA for the third-straight year. Fort Hays State also extended its strong campaign last year as it earned only its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament where the Tigers advanced to the round of 16.

This season, the Tigers will see some old faces while bringing in fresh talent. Most notably, Fort Hays State is the new home for former Kansas Wesleyan coach Blake Reynolds who takes over for Craig Shaw. Reynolds brings eight years of NAIA coaching experience with him to campus. As far as the roster, the Tigers bring back 15 veterans to the field, while welcoming 10 athletes including two transfers. Among the returners are four All-MIAA selections in Bailey Schmitz, Taryn Schnell, Eden Stoddard and Jasmine Beaulieu. Schmitz and Schnell look to continue to anchor a defense which in 2016 held its opponents to just 15 goals in 23 matches, good for .65 a contest. This defense also set a new program record with 12 shutouts during the year.

Offensively, midfielders Stoddard and Beaulieu are back after to lead an offense which was stifling during 2016. The Tigers were able to net 44 goals in their 23 matches, outscoring their competition 44-15. The offense was even stronger when games came down to the wire and in late stages of play as the Tigers outscored their opponents 27-10 in the second half.

Preseason for the Tigers will kick off on Saturday, August 19 as they host Hutchinson Community College in their first exhibition match. Fort Hays State will then match-up against coach Reynolds’ former program when it travels to Salina to for an exhibition meeting with Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday, August 26. The regular season for the Tigers commences on Thursday, August 31 when they hit the road to take on Southwest Minnesota State in Topeka. The first MIAA contest for Fort Hays State will be against Emporia State at home on Sunday, September 24 at 3:30 p.m.

Kansas City, MO – The MIAA has announced that James R. Crane Stadium at Robert N. Tompkins Field on the campus of the University of Central Missouri has been selected as the site for the 2018 MIAA baseball tournament. The tournament will be held May 10-13, 2018. The winner of the 8-team tournament receives an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.

“The MIAA is pleased to announce that our 2018 Conference Baseball Championship will be played at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field on The University of Central Missouri campus,” said MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy. “We have great all-turf baseball stadiums in the MIAA, and Crane Stadium offers a first class venue to stage the 2018 MIAA Tournament. This will be the third consecutive year that we have conducted the championship at a different campus facility and the conference is looking forward to having UCM serve as this year’s host (The 2016 tournament was at Lou Brock Sports Complex on the Lindenwood University campus; last May the championship was on the Missouri Southern State University campus at Warren Turner Field).”

“The University of Central Missouri is excited to be named the host institution for the 2018 MIAA Baseball Tournament,” commented Central Missouri Athletic Director Jerry Hughes. Crane Stadium is an excellent facility and we’re thrilled to be able to provide the student-athletes with an excellent experience. About James R. Crane Stadium at Robert N. Tompkins Field
In the spring of 1998, Central Missouri enjoyed the completion of an outstanding baseball facility to go with its already outstanding baseball program – James R. Crane Stadium at Robert N. Tompkins Field.

A $1.2 million construction project, funded primarily by Crane, added a locker room and coaches’ offices for the Mules, an umpires dressing room, new dugouts, permanent seats, a concession stand, a press box and lights to the already existing playing field.

In the fall of 2004, a new facility was added to include indoor batting cages and bullpens, a weight room, storage facility, and umpires dressing room. Following that in 2006, permanent seatback chairs were installed for the fans. All of this was funded by Crane. In the summer of 2013, the stadium received another upgrade with a new grass playing surface being installed.

In the fall of 2015, a $1.1 million project to outfit the stadium with a synthetic turf playing surface was funded primarily by Crane. The project, which includes synthetic turf from AstroTurf, was completed prior to the Mules’ 2016 home-opener.

This field, which seats approximately 1,500, has been the site 15 NCCAA Division II Regionals and 12 MIAA Tournaments. The field’s dimensions are 330 feet down each foul line, 375 feet to left center and right center, and 400 feet to center field.

Rob Davis signs contract with professional team in Bulgaria

Fort Hays State Men’s Basketball All-American Rob Davis, who completed his senior year of eligibility in 2016-17 at Fort Hays State, has signed a contract to play professionally in Bulgaria. He will play for Akademik Bulteks 99, based in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, a member of the Bulgarian National Basketball League, which is the highest level of professional basketball in the country.

Davis had a tremendous senior season at Fort Hays State, earning All-America honors from Division II Bulletin, All-District First Team by the NABC, All-Region Second Team from D2CCA, and All-MIAA First Team honors. He is the fourth player under head coach Mark Johnson to garner All-America honors and 27th All-America selection overall in school history.

Davis had a tremendous year for the Tigers, averaging 21.4 points per game. He became the first FHSU player to average at least 20 points per game since the 1995-96 season, when Alonzo Goldston averaged 20.4 helping lead the Tigers to an undefeated national championship. He is the first player under head coach Mark Johnson to average at least 20 per game in a season. Davis finished the year scoring 30 or more points in a game eight times and 20 or more 17 times. He scored 1,140 points over two years with Fort Hays State, finishing 15th on the all-time scoring list.

Davis joins another NCAA Division II standout player on the Akademik Bulteks 99 roster in 2017-18. Shakir Smith has signed for a second year with the team after averaging 20.8 points per game in his final year at Adams State University, earning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference First Team honors in 2015-16. Akademik Bulteks 99 finished the 2016-17 season 17-10 overall. Smith and Jordan Semple, a Division II All-America performer from Chico State (Calif.), led the team in scoring last season, combining for 38.3 points per game. Davis looks to bolster the firepower at guard

Davis scored a career-high 42 points at Emporia State on February 1, 2017, matching the sixth-highest scoring game in Tiger history. Dennis Edwards owns the top five single-game scoring performances in Tiger history and was the last to break the 40-point barrier before Davis, doing it three times in 1995.

Davis finished 2016-17 shooting 49.9 percent from the field, making 207-of-415 attempts from the field. He shot 45.3 percent beyond the 3-point line (82-of-181) and 85.1 percent at the free-throw line (126-of-148). He added 3.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.

For his career, Davis ranks fourth all-time in Tiger history for 3-point field goal percentage and free-throw percentage. He was very consistent in his rate of shooting from the field, hitting exactly at a .499 clip overall and .453 clip beyond the 3-point line both seasons at FHSU. His performance at the free-throw line this year improved as his career percentage settled at 82.2 percent.

FHSU Women’s Soccer gets first-ever preseason ranking

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On the heels of the best season in program history, Fort Hays State Women’s Soccer will open the 2017 season ranked No. 14 in the nation. The preseason edition of the United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) NCAA Division II Poll features two MIAA schools in the Top 25 as FHSU joins No. 5 Central Missouri. FHSU and UCM shared the MIAA Regular Season Title last year.

This is the first appearance for the FHSU women’s program in the preseason poll. FHSU jumped into the top 25 nationally for the first time last year on September 13, debuting No. 16 in the poll at that time. Eventually, the Tigers finished at No. 14 in the nation

Fort Hays State finished the 2016 campaign at 15-5-3, setting a new school record for wins in a season and advancing to the NCAA Central Regional Final (Round of 16). The Tigers were knocked out of the tournament by conference co-champ Central Missouri, but advanced past Harding and Minnesota State-Mankato for their deepest NCAA Tournament run in program history.

The Tigers enter their first year under head coach Blake Reynolds after Craig Shaw led the program for its first six years of existence. Reynolds was a head coach at NAIA affiliates Midland University (Neb.) and Kansas Wesleyan University before taking the head role at FHSU. He compiled an overall mark of 102-42-19, spending four years at each of the previous two schools.

Eden Stoddard is the top returning goal scorer on the team after putting seven in the back of the net last year to earn All-MIAA status. She also led the team in game-winning goals. Bailey Schmitz looks to give the Tigers solid defensive presence again after All-MIAA and all-region honors a year ago. She helped the team to a new school record 12 shutouts last season, so the Tigers may look to defense once again as a strong point. FHSU ranked 19th nationally in goals against average last year (0.62). Taryn Schnell and Jasmine Beaulieu were also All-MIAA selections that helped anchor the midfield and defense, who give FHSU a total of four all-conference selections from last year returning in 2017.

Tigers picked fifth in MIAA Football Preseason Polls

FHSU Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Fort Hays State was tabbed fifth in both the MIAA Preseason Coaches and Media Polls on Tuesday (Aug. 1), released during the annual MIAA Football Media Day. Once again, the event was held Children’s Mercy Park, home of Sporting Kansas City and the Division II National Championship Football Game.

Fort Hays State finished in a three-way tie for fourth in the MIAA standings last year alongside Pittsburg State and Washburn, so both the Coaches and Media Polls reflect the final standings from the regular season last year. However, Pittsburg State was the only of school of the three that did not participate in a postseason game last year.

From left, Jacob Mezera, Coach Chris Brown and Doyin Jibowu.

Fort Hays State won the Heart of Texas Bowl, 45-12, over Eastern New Mexico for the program’s first-ever postseason game win, while Washburn fell in the Mineral Water Bowl to Bemidji State 36-23. Fort Hays State has now enjoyed an 8-4 record each of the past two seasons, making bowl appearances both years and tying the program record for wins in a season. The Tigers continue to eye their first trip back to the NCAA Playoffs since the 1995 season on the cusp for two straight years, but may need a record-setting season of wins to do so in the perennially tough MIAA.

Quarterback Jacob Mezera, Bandit back Doyin Jibowu and Coach Chris Brown

Offensively, the Tigers return starting quarterback Jacob Mezera who enters his junior season. Mezera threw for 2,541 yards and 19 touchdowns last year, while breaking the school record for completion percentage with a 63 percent success rate. Senior Kenneth Iheme returns to the backfield, finishing last year with 526 yards on the ground and 176 yards receiving. Sophomore Charles Tigner also poses a strong threat with the ball in his hands after 453 receiving and 178 rushing yards in 2016. Layne Bieberle emerged as a strong deep threat through the air last year, finishing with a team-best 506 receiving yards. Mezera, Iheme, and Bieberle gained All-MIAA honors last year.

The Tigers were sound defensively last year, ranking second in the MIAA in points allowed per game (21.3) and total yards allowed per game (363.6). Only national champion Northwest Missouri State was better in both categories. Leading the defensive side of the ball are All-MIAA selections Nathan Shepherd and Jose Delgado. Shepherd was also tabbed with All-America honors by one organization and has been a presence on the interior of the defensive line for two years. He finished 2016 with 61 tackles, including 9.5 for loss, and three sacks. Delgado is the top returning tackler patrolling at linebacker, finishing with 114 tackles, including 8.5 for loss, 1.5 sacks, and 1 interception. Doyin Jibowu is also a steadying presence at the bandit position, averaging nearly 80 tackles per season in his first two years on the field while starting all 24 contests in that span. Jibowu earned an All-MIAA nod his redshirt-freshman season.

Both the Coaches and Media Polls were consistent in the first six teams referenced in the poll. Two-time defending national champion Northwest Missouri State was picked No. 1 in both polls for the fifth consecutive year. In 2013, that run started when the Bearcats shared the No. 1 pick in the Coaches Poll with Missouri Western and held received the No. 1 pick in the Media Poll. Pittsburg State was the last to be picked alone in the No. 1 spot before the current five-year run by NWMSU, receiving that distinction in both polls in 2012. Northwest Missouri State, Emporia State, and Central Missouri all made the NCAA Playoffs last year. Emporia State’s two losses last year were to Northwest Missouri State (regular season and playoffs).

Fort Hays State opens up the 2017 season on Thursday, August 31 at Missouri Southern in Joplin. The first home game of the year is slated for Thursday, September 7 against Central Missouri.
