FHSU’s Cronin wins 800 meter title, Meyer All-American

BRADENTON, Fla. – Fort Hays State junior Decano Cronin won the National Championship in the 800m run Saturday afternoon (May 27) at the 2017 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He was one of two individuals to earn All-American status on Saturday.

Cronin becomes the first National Champion from Fort Hays State since Christa Bergmann won the indoor weight throw in 2011. He is the first male to win a national title since 2008 (Bryan Haynes, 200m dash) and the first outdoor male champion since 2001 (Zach Kindler, javelin).

Cronin won the race in a time of 1:49.75, just .01 seconds off his season-best time. The Cork, Ireland started in the middle of the track and fell to the back of the pack through the first lap, completing the first 400 meters in eighth place. As the field made the turn to the back straightaway, Cronin bolted to the outside, passing five runners to move into third with 200 meters to go. As the trio completed the final turn, Cronin jumped in front once and for all, holding on to win by .19 seconds.

Brett Meyer also earned All-American status after finishing seventh in the 800m run. Meyer was in the middle of the pack at the midway point before completing the race in 1:50.96. It was the second time Meyer earned All-American honors this season after finishing fifth in the indoor 800m run.

Alexcia Deutscher earned a 10th place finish in the javelin throw, finishing less than three feet from advancing to the finals. The freshman hurled the spear 145 feet, 10 inches on her second throw to move into seventh, but three individuals passed her on the final throw of the first round.

Kolt Newell finished 19th in the high jump after posting a height of 6 feet, 7 inches. The sophomore cleared the bar on his second attempt, but was one of five individuals that failed to clear the 6 foot, 9 inch bar.

The 800m duo produced 12 points in the team competition, giving the Tigers a 19th place finish overall.

FHSU’s Perkins qualifies for National Championship

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Fort Hays State golfer Hannah Perkins qualified for the 2017 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship after finishing fifth at the Central Super Region Championship this week. The sophomore fired a final round 3-over 74 Wednesday (May 10) to finish at 13-over for the tournament.

“There are not many shots that I would change from these past three days,” said Perkins. “I just played really solid.”

Perkins is the first Tiger to qualify for nationals in program history. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on those teams advanced to nationals. The Wichita, Kan. native was the top individual after the top four players in the standings were all on advancing teams.

“She was very steady all week,” said head coach Rich Guffey. “It’s been a good experience for us as a team, and we’re excited to keep it going.”

“I had a good front nine and was able to keep that rolling on the back,” said Perkins.

Wednesday’s round matched her best round of the season. She recorded up two birdies on the day, matching her total from rounds one and two combined.

“This has been an awesome ride, but I’ve still got work to do,” said Perkins.

Perkins will compete in the National Championship next week (May 17-20) at Findlay Country Club in Findlay, Ohio. The 72-hole tournament will be held over four days, with one round each day.

Perkins fifth following round two of NCAA Regional

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Fort Hays State golfer Hannah Perkins posted a 6-over 77 in round two of the 2017 NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Championship Tuesday afternoon (May 9), moving to 10-over for the tournament. The sophomore sits in a tie for fifth with one round to go at Minnehaha Country Club.

“The pins were a bit tougher today,” said Perkins. “The wind shifted 180 degrees, so that changed up a few holes. Overall I’m really happy with how I’m playing, just have to finish strong tomorrow.”

Perkins opened the day with a pair of three-putt bogeys, but battled back to shoot 39 on the front nine. The Wichita, Kan. native shaved off one stroke on the back nine, firing a 38 with three bogeys and one birdie. She is one of two golfers in the field that has yet to post a 6 on any hole.

“I thought she played about the same today as she did in round one,” said head coach Rich Guffey. “She hit several greens, just had a few too many putts lip out.”

Perkins is four shots back of Arkansas Tech’s Nuchakorn Nunbhakdi, who is 6-over for the tournament. The top three teams and the top three individuals not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships next week in Findlay, Ohio (May 17-20).

“All in all, we’re pretty happy about where we’re at going into the final round,” said Guffey. “She has really been competing with some of the best golfers in the country; it’s been fun to watch.”

She will tee off in round three at 8:50 a.m. Wednesday morning.
