Chapman tosses two complete games as Tiger softball splits with Bearcats

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State Softball split a conference doubleheader for the second straight day, this time with Northwest Missouri State on Saturday (Apr. 15). Like Friday, the Tigers took game one by one run, 2-1, but then fell in the second game 7-4. FHSU is now 13-37 overall, 6-18 in the MIAA, while NWMSU went to 24-16 overall, 13-7 in the MIAA.

Adrian Pilkington Postgame Interview

Game 1: Fort Hays State 2, Northwest Missouri State 1
Game one of the doubleheader blazed along, finishing in just 57 minutes. Hailey Chapman came out on the good end of a 2-1 pitcher’s duel, as the defense behind her played excellent.

Game 1 Highlights

Northwest Missouri State pitcher Taylor Blackford peppered the strike zone consistently throughout the game and had a perfect game through four innings with the Bearcats up 1-0. In the fifth, though, she ran into trouble by hitting Veronica Knittig to start the inning. Claudia Vazquez pinch ran and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tess Gray. With two outs, Bailey Boxberger broke up both the no-hitter and shutout with a rocket RBI double over the center fielder’s head. A batter later, Kylie Strand untied the game with an RBI single to left center field.

That was all Hailey Chapman needed in the circle as she kept the Bearcats off balance enough throughout the contest. Despite giving up two well-placed doubles and a run in the first inning, Chapman allowed just three hits the rest of the way for her eighth win of the season in a complete game effort. She walked just one and struck out two in her complete game effort.

Blackford moved to 11-5 on the season with the loss for NWMSU. Other than Fort Hays State’s two timely hits in the fifth, she allowed just three hits overall, while striking out three. She threw just 49 pitches for the game.

Game 2: Northwest Missouri State 7, Fort Hays State 4
Most of the scoring in game two occurred late as the Bearcats and Tigers were tied 1-1 through four innings. NWMSU took the lead 2-1 in the fifth on Fort Hays State’s first error of the entire weekend. Lily Sale looked a runner back to third on a ground ball, but threw wide of the first base bag, allowing the run to come into score.

Game 2 Highlights

Hailey Chapman got the nod in the pitching circle once again after throwing 88 pitches in game one. She continued to hold the Bearcats relatively quiet until the sixth inning when she did not get the benefit of a couple borderline pitches. It looked as though she might have had strike three to the first batter of the inning, but was ruled a ball and the batter proceeded to double. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, she fell behind in the count 3-1 and did not get the benefit of a borderline call on the inside corner, walking in a run. Following that, Kaitlyn Weis doubled in three more runs and instantly made the score 6-1 in favor of NWMSU.

The Tigers did not go down without a fight and took advantage of two Northwest Missouri error in the bottom of the sixth to plate three runs. Bailey Kennedy singled home two runs and Lily Sale singled home one to make it 6-4.

The Bearcats picked up an insurance run in the seventh with a triple and single to lead off the inning, but the Tigers still threatened in the bottom of the seventh. FHSU batters were not fooled at all by Weis, who relieved Holly Posegate the final two innings. Veronica Knittig led off the inning with a double, but well placed fielders helped NWMSU escape trouble in the seventh. Tess Gray hit a missile back up the middle snared out of the air by Weis in the pitching circle for a tough-luck first out. Bailey Boxberger grounded a ball up the middle and just beat the off balance throw of the second baseman at first to put runners on at first and third. Collette West, who had an RBI single early in the game, tagged a ball on a line to right field, but lucky for NWMSU it was right at the fielder for the second out. Kylie Strand then grounded out to short to end the game.

Posegate picked up the win for the Bearcats, moving to 10-6 on the season. She allowed one run on five hits with one strikeout. Weis allowed three unearned runs in relief for the Bearcats on four hits. Chapman took the loss for FHSU, throwing her second complete game of the day. She allowed seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and four walks with a strikeout. Sale, Knittig, and Boxberger all had two hits in the game.

The Tigers play a non-conference doubleheader with Newman University on Wednesday (Apr. 19) in Hays. Start time is set for 3 pm.

The Tigers edged the Griffons 5-4 in the first game, with a Bailey Boxberger home run making the difference, then fell in the second game 14-3 in five innings. The Tigers are now 12-36 overall, 5-17 in the MIAA, while the Griffons went to 29-15 overall, 9-9 in the MIAA.

Adrian Pilkington Postgame Interview

Game 1: Fort Hays State 5, Missouri Western 4
Fort Hays State never trailed and hung on for a one-run win in the first game of the doubleheader. The Tigers led by three before holding off the Griffons late for the win.

Game 1 Highlights

FHSU took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-RBI single to the left center gap by Tess Gray. MWSU cut the lead in half by manufacturing a run in the second.

The Tigers pushed their lead back to two at 3-1 when Gray recorded her third RBI of the game with a well-placed single just over first base down the right field line.

A leadoff walk cost the Tigers in the fourth inning, allowing the Griffons to pull back within one. But, the Tigers got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double by Bailey Kennedy. In the fifth, Bailey Boxberger delivered the decisive run of the game with a laser shot home run over the left field wall, making the score 5-2.

The Griffons threatened with a two-run homer in the sixth, but later in the inning Tiger starter Hailey Chapman was able to keep the game from getting tied. She induced a groundout to shortstop to leave a runner at third base and the score at 5-4 in favor of FHSU.

In the seventh, the first runner reached base for the Griffons on a hit-by-pitch, but three weak pop ups on the infield gave Chapman a complete game win. She allowed five hits, walked three, and hit four batters, while striking out four to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Four of the five runs allowed by Griffon pitcher Kenzie Hilzer were earned. She allowed seven hits and three walks, while striking out eight. She moved to 14-6 overall with the loss.

Game 2: Missouri Western 14, Fort Hays State 3
Missouri Western scored 11 runs over the first three innings and ran away with a 14-3 run-rule win. The Griffons hit four home runs in the game, accounting for half of their runs, including two by Sydney Washington.

Game 2 highlights

The Tigers had a chance to pull even or take a lead in the first inning by loading the bases, down only 1-0 at the time. But a strikeout ended the threat and then MWSU went on to plate four runs in the second and six in the third to build an 11-0 lead.

The Tigers scored their first run in the fourth inning on a wild pitch. Down 14-1 in the fifth, a Collette West double to the left center gap plated two runners in a bases-loaded situation.

Barbara Billingsley picked up the win for MWSU. She moved to 15-9 on the season. Two of her three runs allowed were earned. She surrendered eight hits and two walks, while striking out five.

Carrie Clarke took the loss for FHSU. She threw four innings, allowing eight runs on 14 hits and a walk with one strikeout. Lexie Kimminau logged and inning and allowed six runs on four hits, a walk, and a hit batter.

The Tigers play another conference doubleheader at home on Saturday (Apr. 15) when they host Northwest Missouri State at noon.

Tiger baseball swept at Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped both ends of Thursday’s (April 13) road doubleheader against Missouri Western, falling 14-5 in the opener before coming up short in the nightcap, 12-2.

Game One: Missouri Western 14, Fort Hays State 5
The Tigers fell behind early and were never able to recover in the opener. The Griffons scored four runs in the first and added three more in the third to jump out to a 7-0 lead. Fort Hays State battled back to close within 7-5, but the home team doubled its score by the seventh inning to win 14-5.

Trailing 7-0, Cody Starkel opened the Tiger rally with a leadoff double in the top of the fifth. After a pitch hit Marcus Altman, Starkel came around to score on a single to left from Jace Bowman. Later with two outs, Colton Helm loaded the bases with an infield single, bringing up Nick Hammeke. The senior came through with a base knock to left field, scoring a pair. Trevor Hughes kept things rolling with a solid single to right, scoring Helm from second.

After Fort Hays State batted around in the fifth, Starkel was once again the first Tiger to step up to the plate. The freshman squared up a pitch and sent it sailing over the fence in left center, trimming the Griffon lead to two.

Ben Ramberg (0-8) took the loss after surrendering nine runs on 10 hits over 5.1 innings on the mound, striking out two. Starkel finished 2-for-4, including his third home run of the season. Bowman collected two hits, driving in one run and scoring another.

Game Two: Missouri Western 12, Fort Hays State 2 (8 innings)

Fort Hays State jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the second after Jace Bowman led off with a triple to center. Dayton Pomeroy then lifted a deep fly ball to left, scoring Bowman on the sacrifice. Tiger baseball clipped by Lopers

KEARNEY, Neb. – The Fort Hays State baseball team dropped a mid-week MIAA contest to Nebraska-Kearney Tuesday evening, 6-4. The Tigers dip to 9-26 this season and 2-20 in the conference while the Lopers improve to 12-23 on the year and 5-17 in league play.

Steve Johnson Postgame Interview

Game Highlights

Both sides were gifted chances all evening, with the Tigers giving up six free bases on walks or hit by pitches and UNK making five errors in the field. Though the Tigers outhit UNK 8-6, FHSU was unable to capitalize on enough opportunities, leaving nine runners on base.

The Tigers grabbed an early lead after Jake Lanferman beat out an infield single in the top of the first. Trevor Hughes drove him in with a two-out double to center later in the inning.

The Lopers responded in the second, tying the score at one before grabbing a 4-1 lead with a trio of runs in the third. FHSU answered right back, plating two runs in the fourth to close within one. Cody Starkel led off with a single before moving to third on a base knock from Cody Basgall. Dayton Pomeroy followed with an RBI groundout, plating Starkel. Basgall then came in to score when Bryce Witchurch reached on a throwing error, closing the gap to 4-3.

Fort Hays State then knotted things up at four with another run in the top of the fifth. Lanferman reached on another infield single before swiping second base, his 12th steal of the year. Hughes came through with another two-out base hit, singling to left field to drive in Lanferman.

UNK bounced back with runs in the sixth and the seventh, holding the Tigers scoreless over the final four innings to win 6-4.

Austin Weiser (0-1) took the loss after giving up one run in his longest outing of the season, scattering two hits and one walk across four innings of work. FHSU softball suffers sweep against UCO

HAYS, Kan. – Fort Hays State softball dropped a pair of games to MIAA-leading Central Oklahoma on Tuesday (April 11). The Tigers played six strong innings in game one only to give up five runs in the seventh inning, falling 7-2. That outburst propelled the powerful Broncho offense to a 14-0 victory in game two. The Tigers now sit at 11-35 on the year and 4-16 in the MIAA, while the Bronchos improve to 36-8 overall and 16-4 in the conference.

Game 1: Central Oklahoma 7, Fort Hays State 2
Tiger starter Hailey Chapman got things going with two solid frames in the circle, striking out the side in order in the first before following that up with another one-two-three inning in the second.

The Tigers struck for the first run of the game in the home half of the second thanks to a solo shot off the bat of Tess Gray. Not only did the homer put the Tigers out in front 1-0, it tied the freshman catcher with teammates Candace Bollig and Veronica Knittig for the team lead with 22 RBI on the year.

The lead did not last long, however, as the Bronchos tied things up at one on a Tiger error in the third inning.

FHSU regained the lead in the fifth when they used some small ball to manufacture a run. Bailey Boxberger led off the inning with a four-pitch walk before Claudia Vazquez came in to pinch-run at first. Kylie Strand followed with a perfect bunt out in front of the plate, beating out what was going to be a sacrifice bunt. Jeni Mohr then advanced the runners to second and third with a successful sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. The Tigers then chose to lay down a bunt in the third-consecutive at bat, with leadoff hitter Bailey Kennedy placing the ball to the right of the pitcher. The throw came home but had no chance to beat Vazquez, completing a perfectly executed suicide squeeze.

The Bronchos once again evened the score in the following half inning, tying the game at two. With the bases loaded, a sharp single off the bat of Ashleigh Tramel plated a run. The third base coach attempted to send another runner home on the base knock, but Kennedy charged hard on contact and threw a strike to the plate, nailing the go-ahead runner.

The upset from the Tigers would not come to pass, however, as the best offense in the country woke up for five runs in the seventh inning. Fort Hays State would go down in order in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Bronchos a 7-2 victory.

Chapman (6-19) pitched all seven innings for the Tigers and looked outstanding over the first six frames. She ended the day giving up six earned runs on nine hits, five walks and nine strikeouts.

Game 2: Central Oklahoma 14, Fort Hays State 0 (5 innings)
Central Oklahoma opened the nightcap right where they left off in game one, plating seven runs in the first inning. Tiger starter Carrie Clark struggled in the circle out of the gate, failing to record an out after facing five batters. Chapman entered the game in relief and allowed two more runs in the frame, one of which was unearned. The Bronchos then scored seven more runs over the next three frames before being shutout in the fifth.

The Tigers could not get anything going offensively, scattering six hits over five innings. Kennedy led the way with two knocks, including a double, while Knittig, Gray, Strand and Mohr all recorded singles.

Clarke (5-12) took the loss in the circle for the Tigers. After reentering the game with two outs in the fourth, she ended with a stat line of 1.1 innings pitched, giving up five runs (four earned), with one walk and one strikeout. Chapman tossed two innings more innings in game two, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits, also recording one walk and one strikeout. Lexi Kimminau also made a relief appearance, tossing 1.2 innings and surrendering six runs (three earned).

The Tigers will continue their home stand this Friday when they square off with Missouri Western for a pair of games beginning at 2 p.m.
