Schmidt no-hitter leads TMP baseball to season opener sweep

Kameron Schmidt threw a no-hitter, leading the TMP-Marian baseball team to a 10-0, five inning victory in their season opener against Scott City Tuesday at the TMP field.

Schmidt strikes out four and walks none.

Justin Pfeifer goes 3-for-4 at the plate with a triple and three RBI’s. Chase Romme also had three hits and three RBI’s.

The Monarchs win game two 12-2 also in five innings.

Jared Vitztum picks up the win, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four and walking four.

The Monarchs score five in the fourth and three in the fifth to blow open the two-run game. Justin Pfeifer and Kameron Schmidt both had three hits and combined to drive in five runs.

HHS baseball opens season with two losses

A rough start for the Hays High baseball team as they lose 7-3 to Valley Center and 12-2 to Derby yesterday at the Valley Center Triangular.

The Indians led 2-0 in the first game but the host Hornets score two in the fourth to tie then four in the fifth.

Cole Schmumacher takes the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits over five innings. Connor Rule had three hits including a double.

Derby scored seven in the third to blow open the second game open.

Hays commits seven errors in the game.

Marcus Altman takes the loss, allowing nine runs, only one earned, on five hits while walking six and striking out one over 2 2/3 innings. He and Adam Klaus drive in the only Indian runs.

Hays return to action next Tuesday against Dodge City.

TMP-Marian softball drops a pair in Dodge City

The TMP-Marian softball team drops both of their games in Dodge City Tuesday. The Monarchs (2-2) fall 2-0 in the first game and 8-1 in game two.

Alison Helget goes the distance in the opener, holding the Red Demons to two unearned runs on four hits while striking out three and walking none. Dodge City scores a run in the fourth and one in the sixth.

TMP commits six errors in the second game resulting in six unearned runs. Lacy Bailey takes the loss, allowing  all eight runs on six hits, walking one and striking out six. She had two of the Monarchs five hits. Katelyn Zimmerman doubled and drove in TMP’s only run.

HHS girls soccer falls to Salina South in McPherson Invitational

Talyn Kleweno scores two goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to pull the Hays High girls soccer team to within a goal of Salina South in their opener at the McPherson Invitational on Tuesday, but the Cougars answer with three goals in the final 25 minutes and win 6-2.

The Indians (0-2) will now play Topeka High Thursday at 2pm. Topeka loses 6-1 to Newton in their opener.

HHS softball swept in Valley Center

The Hays High softball team starts their season 0-6, losing 13-1 to Valley Center and 18-0 to Derby Tuesday at the Valley Center Triangular.

The Hornets led the first game 2-0 before scoring four in the third and seven in the fourth. Madison Prough takes the loss, allowing all 13 runs on nine hits while walking four and striking out three.

Derby used a nine-run third to blow open the second game then added seven in the fifth. The Indians were held to just two hits, both from Hope Aufdemberge.

Hays is off until April ninth when they open Western Athletic Conference play at home against Dodge City.

Ellis baseball sweeps Ellsworth; softball gets swept

The Ellis baseball team sweeps Ellworth Tuesday by scores of 13-3 and 16-1. Nathan Cox and Easton Smith both have four hits and drive in three in the opener. Smith picks up the win, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking four over three innings.

Brandon Bollig strikes out 10 in the second contest and picks up the win. He allows the one run on one hit and walks two. Bollig and Brevin LaBarge both have three hits and combine to drive in five.

Softball swept
The Railer softball team loses 15-9 and 20-16 to the Bearcats to fall to 2-2 on the season. They trailed 9-8 after five innings in the first game, but the Bearcats score two in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Lexi Rome was one of four Railers to have two hits and drove in three.

The Railers jumped out to an 8-3 lead after three innings in game two but Ellsworth answers with four in the fourth, five in the fifth and seven in the sixth to take a 20-10 lead. Ellis rallies with six in the bottom of the seventh but the comeback bid falls short.

Several area players named to KBCA All-State teams

Several area players have been named to the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association All-State teams.

Hays High senior Brady Werth is a Second Team pick in 4A Division I while TMP-Marian senior Kameron Schmidt is an honorable mention pick in 4A Division II.

Victoria’s Bryan Dome is a First Team pick in 1A Division I and Ellis junior Brendon Brenner a Second Team pick in 2A.

Fort Hays State signees Kyler Kinnamon of McPherson and Trey O’Neil of Scott City are both First Team picks in 4A Division I and 3A respectively.

FHSU signee Carly Heim of Hoxie heads the 1A Division I girls First Team.

TMP-Marian girls soccer suffers first loss

The TMP-Marian girls soccer team falls to defending 4-1A state champion Wichita Trinity Academy 2-0 yesterday in Wichita.

The Knights score both goals in the first half.

The Monarchs are now 2-1. They return home Thursday to face Wichita Independent at 4pm.

HHS boys tennis finishes 7th at McPherson

The Hays High boys tennis team finishes seventh at their season opener in McPherson. The Indians finish with eight points. McPherson wins the tournament with 49.

Andrew McGinnis goes 2-2 in singles and finishes seventh. Curtis Renz also goes 2-2 but does not place.

The doubles teams of Trent Flora and Jacob Alexander as well as Alex Bogart and Jarrett Degenhardt both go 0-3.

HHS Brady Werth to play in KBCA All-Star game

Hays High’s Brady Werth has been selected to play in the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association all-star game June 27 in Salina. (complete list of rosters below)

The Indians all-time leading scorer and rebounder will be joined by McPherson’s Kyler Kinnamon. Both are Fort Hays State signees and will play on the White team as will FHSU football signee Layne Bieberle of Central Plains.

Trey O’Neil of Scott City, another FHSU basketball signee is on the Blue team along with Quinter’s Brett Crist.

Carly Hiem of Hoxie, who is also a Fort Hays State signee, will play in the girls game.

St. John’s Dean Wade is named Kansas Mr. Basketball by the KBCA while Cimarron’s Morgan Ediger is Miss Kansas Basketball.

TMP soccers wins in Wichita

The TMP-Marian girls soccer teams opens their season 2-0 following a 7-0 win over Wichita Classical School at the Wichita Classic. Annaka Applequist scored two goals with Bailey Hageman, Kayla Vitztum, Aubrey Koeningsman, Megan Koeningsman and Ashley Ostrander all adding one.

The Monarchs will now play defending 4-1A state champion Wichita Trinity Monday.

TMP-Marian softball opens season with pair of wins over Sacred Heart

The TMP-Marian softball team opens their season with a pair of wins over Salina Sacred Heart on Thursday. The Monarchs take the opener 11-5 then pick up a run-rule 12-1 victory in game two.

Katelyn Zimmerman’s two-run homer in the first gave the Monarchs the early lead in the first game. After the Knights went up 3-2, TMP answered with two in the third, fourth and fifth then put the game away with three in the seventh.

Alison Helget strikes out five and walks just one in the complete game victory in the first game. She also had two hits and drove in a run. Jodi Veach had four hits and an RBI while Heidi Gottschalk and Megan Brin both drive in two.

The Monarchs jump out early in game two scoring three in the first, four in the second and two in the third.

Only three of TMP’s 12 runs were earned thanks to 10 Sacred Heart errors.

Freshman Bailey Lacy gets the game two victory allowing just two hits while striking out seven. Laurel Hageman had two hits while Veach and Meagan Brin both drive in two.

HHS softball swept in Goodland

The Hays High softball team opens their season 0-4 after a couple of losses in Goodland Thursday. The Indians fall 6-3 in
the first game then 7-6 in game two.

The Indians are on the road again Tuesday for a triangular at Valley Center.

Game 1: Goodland 6, Hays 3
The Indians commit six errors in the first game resulting in five unearned runs.

Hays scored two in the top of the first on a triple by Tessa Stickel scoring Albany Schaffer. Stickel scored on an RBI single by Kaylie Schoendaller who finished 2-for-2.

Goodland answered with four in the second.

The Indians made it 4-3 with a run in the fourth but the Cowgirls score single runs in the fourth and fifth for the final margin.

Madison Prough goes the distance allowing all six runs (one earned) on eight hits and takes the loss.

Game 2: Goodland 7, Hays 6
Hays was up 4-1 in the second game going into the bottom of the fifth when Goodland scores four. They add two in the sixth before the Indians rally with two in the seventh and had the tying run at third to end the game.

Kaylie Schoendaller had two hits including a two-run homer in the third and drives in three.

Erika Arnhold takes the complete game loss allowing all seven runs while walking nine and striking out eight.
