Hays Post

Girls
Salina Central 59 – Hays 42

For a fourth consecutive game, one bad quarter blew open a close game for the Hays High Lady Indians. Hays, trying to snap an eight game losing streak, was taking on one of the best class 5A has to offer. Salina Central came in ranked 6th and 11-3 on the season.

Hays hung with the Lady Mustangs early after falling behind 5-0. The Lady Indians surged to tied the game at eight with three minutes to go in the first quarter. Central responded by closing the quarter on a 7-2 run taking a 15-10 lead.

Highlights

Hays stayed close through the second quarter and had the ball twice down by one point at 20-19, but failed to scored on either occasion. But still they trailed by just six at half time 25-19.

Hays kept the deficit at six midway through the third quarter, when Central closed on a 10-0 running to go up 44-28. Hays never got closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter, losing 59-42.

Coach Kirk Maska

Audra Schmeidler led the Indians with 13. Talyn Kleweno scored in double figures for the first time with 11.

Hays falls to 3-12 on the year. Salina Central is 12-3.

Boys
Salina Central 49 – Hays 46

Hays and Salina Central played to two close games last season, and on Tuesday night they did again. Salina Central came into the game as one of the hottest teams in the state having won nine straight games. It was also a show down of state ranked teams with Hays at #10 in 4A-D1 and Central #3 in 5A.

Hays jumped out to a five point lead on three different occasions in the first half, the last coming at 15-10 in the second quarter. Central tied the game at 18 and again at 20 with 1:55 to go in the half. Salina Central then would score five point with out the Indians ever getting a possession. The Mustangs hit three of four free throws, two from a technical foul, and then a basket during a 13-2 run. Hays fell behind by seven before two free throws pulled the gap back to five at half time 27-22.

Highlights

Hays again fell behind seven early in the third quarter 31-24, but then fought back. Brady Werth scored 11 of the Indians 13 third quarter points to pull with in two, 37-35. The Indians tied the game at 39 with 6:31 remaining in the game, but never took the lead. Free throw shooting became an issue for both Hays and Central down the stretch. Hays made just 5 of their final attempts, two of which would have tied the game at different scores. Central made three of their final six in trying to put the game away in the final forty seconds. Hays had the ball with 1.8 seconds remaining, but never got off a shot, falling 49-46.

Coach Rick Keltner

Hays falls to 10-5, losing three of their last four games to Scott City, Salina South, and Salina Central. Central has now won ten in a row, and hasn’t lost since the calendar turned to 2015. The Mustangs are 12-3.

TMP sweeps Norton

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls:  TMP 63, Norton 38

TMP used an early 10 to nothing run, that spanned the first and second quarters, to help put away the Norton Lady Jays early.  The Lady Monarchs started the run with the game tied at six and never looked back.  TMP led 14-6 after the first quarter, 28-11 at halftime, 49-23 at the end of the third and won 63-38.

TMP has won 13 games in a row and are now 13-1 on the season and 6-0 in the Mid Continent League.  Norton drops to 7-9 overall and 2-4 in the MCL.  TMP will be on the road in Scott City on Tuesday night.

ROSE MCFARLAND INTERVIEW

GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS

Boys:  TMP 44, Norton 30

TMP trailed only once, 2-0, in their Mid Continent League rematch with the Norton Bluejays on Friday night at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.  Offense wasn’t nearly as abundant as it was the first time these two teams met when the Monarchs beat the Bluejays 80-48 in the MCL Tournament Championship.  TMP took an 8-2 lead heading into the second quarter and continued to keep Norton at arm’s length the entire game.

The Monarchs led 17-9 at halftime and extended that lead to double figures, 34-21, at the end of the third quarter. Norton was able to cut the TMP lead to 10 early in the fourth quarter but that would be as close as the Bluejays would get.  Kameron Schmidt led TMP with 12 points and Jared Vitztum had 10.  Deon Lyle was the only Bluejay in double figures.  He finished with 12 points but fouled out midway through the fourth quarter.

TMP is now 9-5 overall and 5-1 in the MCL.  Norton drops to 13-2 and 5-1 in the MCL as well.  TMP will be at Scott City on Tuesday.

Interview with Indians’ next head football coach

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER

Just over a month following the resignation of Bo Black as the head football and track coach at Hays High, a new coach has been selected. Randall Rath has agreed to a contract offer to begin teaching and coach in the fall of 2015. Rath’s job is still pending USD 489 school board approval.

Coach Randall Rath

Rath is currently at Cimarron High School, where he led the Bluejays to a 6-4 record and a playoff berth. He will be leaving Cimarron after just one season.

Rath had been coach in Oakley since 1992. He became head coach for the Plainsmen in 1998 and remained in that position through the 2013 season.

Rath plans to meet with the Indian football team in the next couple of weeks, and looks to take full control of the program the first of June.

Randall and his wife Ann are both Kansas natives. Their oldest daughter, Taylor, is married and lives in Aurora, Nebraska. Their middle daughter, Kaylen, is a junior at Fort Hays State University. Their youngest daughter, Marlee is a senior in high school at Cimarron.

Rath becomes the third coach in three years at Hays High School. Ryan Cornelsen left to become the head coach in Hutchinson two years ago. Black is headed to Shawnee Mission Northwest following this school year.

Rath says his plan is to run the football and then use play action off of the running game.

Rath also hopes raise the number of athletes out for football and all sports in general at Hays High. Rath believes that multi-sport athletes helps out all of the programs.

Rath will also be the duties of head track coach.

Rath expected to be named HHS football coach

The school won’t say anything until it’s officially approved by the school board at its Feb. 16 meeting, but Randall Rath has been tabbed as the next head football coach at Hays High School. Several media outlets and Cimarron High School have confirmed that Rath will be leaving at the end of the year.

Rath, who was a finalist for the position last year, becomes the third head coach in three years at HHS. He replaces Bo Black, who announced his resignation last month after one season to take the head coaching job at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

Rath was the coach at Oakley High School for nearly 30 years before taking over at Cimarron last season.

Salina South sweeps Hays

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Salina South 48 – Hays 39

The Hays High Lady Indians and Salina South Lady Cougars had combined for just five wins entering Tuesday night’s game. It made sense then that neither team could gain much separation from one another. Hays led early 8-5 after a 6-0 run and then 10-9 after the first quarter.

Hays built their lead to five on two occasions and had the ball up 19-14 but couldn’t score. South went on a 7-0 lead to gain the lead at 21-19, when Audra Schmeidler hit a three to put the Lady Indians up 22-21. South responded with a driving layup on their next possession to take a 23-22 lead at half time.

Highlights

The Lady Indians scored the first seven points of the second half to build their biggest lead of the game at 29-23. South though responded with a 11-4 run to close the third quarter up 34-33.

South went on a game defining run scoring the first eight points of the fourth quarter, while taking a 42-33 lead. Hays trimmed the lead down to seven on two occasions but never got any closer.

Coach Kirk Maska

Girls:  TMP 54, Abilene 49

TMP and Abilene entered Friday night’s match-up at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays with a combined record of 20-4, something had to give.  It was a back and forth battle all night long.  TMP led 13-11 after the first quarter.  The Lady Monarchs were able to maintain that lead, 25-23, going into halftime following a Kaylor Gottschalk buzzer beater.

Abilene started to make some strong plays in the third quarter behind junior Belle Barbieri who finished with a game high 17 points.  She helped push the Cowgirls in front late in the third.  Abilene outscored TMP seven to nothing in the final couple of minutes to take their largest lead of the contest going into the fourth quarter, 38-32.

TMP had an answer to start the fourth quarter and it was Kayla Vitztum.  The Lady Monarch Freshman came to life and led TMP on an eight to nothing run to start the fourth quarter and TMP would never trail again.  They were able to knock home some free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.

Vitztum led TMP with 16 points and Megan Koenigsman added 14.  The Lady Monarchs have now won 12 games in a row and will host Norton next Friday night.

GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS

Boys:  Abilene 67, TMP 59 OT

With all the makings of a heavyweight title bout on Friday night, the TMP Monarchs and the Abilene Cowboys did not disappoint.  It was a game that was back and forth where neither team felt comfortable the whole way.  Abilene led most of the way including a 14-13 lead after the first quarter following a buzzer beating tip in by 6′ 8″ junior Eric Harms who finished the game with 27 points.

The Cowboys would stretch the lead to as many as eight a couple of times in the second quarter and only led by three late.  That’s when Harms came up with an off balance three pointer that banked in at the buzzer to put the Cowboys up 36-30 at halftime.

Abilene would keeping jabbing at TMP in the third quarter until the Monarchs had enough.  TMP would charge back to get the game to 47-43 at the end of the third quarter.  The Monarch defense started to wear down Abilene.

The fourth quarter showed up and the game was on.  TMP would battle back to take the lead, 55-51, with just over three minutes to play.  The Cowboys would swing next and tie the game at 55.  Abilene had the ball with just over a minute and half left and regulation and played it to the final shot, and missed, sending the game to overtime.

In the extra period it was all Abilene.  The Cowboys outscored TMP in the 12 to four to pick up their 11th win on the season.  The Monarchs dropped to 8-5 on the season and saw their seven game winning streak go by the wayside. Kameron Schmidt led TMP with 28 points.
