Hays High Lady Indians fall to Dodge City

By Dustin Armbruster

Dodge City 57 – Hays 31

The Hays High Lady Indians held Dodge City scorless for the first 3:15 of the game on Tuesday night. Over that time though, Hays was only able to build a 3-0 lead. Dodge City’s first point of the game came at the free throw line and led to a 20-0 run to give the Red Demons at 20-3 lead in the second quarter. Hays over that time went ten plus minutes with out scoring.

Highlights

Trailing 25-10 at half time, the Indians used a couple of new players to start the second half and Rachel Taylor provided seven quick points to put the Indians down 31-18. That score would be the closest Hays would get rest of the night, falling 57-31.

Hays shot 31% in the loss on 11 of 36 from the field. Dodge City was 15 of 42 for 36%. Dodge City outrebounded Hays 38-20. The Lady Red Demons shot well from the free throw line going 25 of 33.

Coach Kirk Maska

Hays drops their fourth in a row and is now 3-7 on the season and 0-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. Dodge City is ranked #10 in class 6A and is now 5-4 and 3-0.

Rachel Taylor led the Indians with seven points. Jessie Harshberger led Dodge City with 18.

The Lady Indians are off until next Thursday when they play in the Mid-America Classic in McPherson. That bracket will be released in the next couple of days.

TMP girls outlast Phillipsburg

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

TMP 41, Phillipsburg 35

Phillipsburg started out on an 8-0 run in Tuesday’s Mid Continent League quarterfinal match-up with the TMP Lady Monarchs at Al Billinger Fieldhouse in Hays.  TMP would not score their first points until the :36 second mark of the first quarter which was the beginning of a 13-0 run.  The Lady Monarchs would not trail again the rest of the game.

It wasn’t a pretty game as both teams struggled offensively.  TMP led by only three at halftime, 13-10.  They were able to stretch the lead to 10 a couple of times in the second half but Phillipsburg wouldn’t go away.  The Lady Panthers fought back to within two midway through the fourth quarter at 30-28 but wouldn’t get any closer.  TMP finished them off with some late free throws to pick up their ninth straight win.

Megan Koenigsman was the only Lady Monarch in double figures with 14 points.  Tatum Bartels added 14 as well for Phillipsburg.  TMP will play Stockton in the semifinals Friday afternoon at 3pm in WaKeeney. The Tigers beat Plainville 55-44 Tuesday.

TMP boys handle Ellis again

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

TMP 64, Ellis 46

TMP trailed Ellis by a score of 11-6 midway through the first quarter in Monday night’s opening round of the Mid-Continent League Tournament.  The Monarchs then proceeded to embark on a 15-2 run that spanned into the second quarter.  They would not relinquish the lead again.  TMP led 31-24 at the half and stretched that lead to 48-37 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Monarchs used a quick five-nothing spurt to start the fourth and cruised to the 18 point win from there.  It is the second time in the last 10 days that TMP has beaten the Railroaders in Ellis following a 69-55 Monarch win on January 9th.  Jared Vitztum led three Monarchs in double figures with 18 points.  Kameron Schmidt had 13 and Max Megaffin added 12.

TMP is in the middle of a five game winning streak and are now 6-4 on the season.  Ellis drops to 6-4 and are heading in the other direction with a four game losing streak. TMP will now play Stockton in the semifinals on Friday in WaKeeney.  Ellis will play Phillipsburg in the consolation semifinals on Thursday in Plainville.

By JEREMY McGUIRE
HaysPost

Girls:    TMP 52, Smith Center 47

It took the TMP Lady Monarchs all the way to the early part of the third quarter before they were able to grab their first lead in their Mid Continent League road game against Smith Center.  The Lady Red led the entire first half with their largest lead at 17 to nine early in the second quarter.  TMP crawled back into the game late in the first half and trailed 25-21 at the break.

The second half would be more favorable for the Lady Monarchs.  They led 38-35 and would not trail again on the way to their 52-47 road victory.  Megan Koenigsman led TMP in scoring with 17.  Melissa Pfeifer and Madyson Koerner chipped in 11 to help TMP to their eighth straight win.  They are now 8-1 on the season and will play at home on Tuesday in the opening round of the Mid Continent League Tournament against either Phillipsburg or Trego.

By Dustin Armbruster

Girls
Garden City 45 – Hays 24

Garden City used a 6-0 and 10-0 run in the second quarter, making a one point ball game after the first quarter, a fifteen point game by half time. Hays opened up the second half with a Summer Smith three pointer and two Mattison Schlaefli free throws to trim the lead down to 10, but never got any closer.

Highlights

Hays falls to 3-6 and 0-3 in conference play. Garden City is now 6-5 and 2-2 in the league. Hays will be at home on Tuesday in a girls only game taking on conference leader Dodge City.

Coach Kiirk Maska

Boys
Garden City 58 – Hays 46

All was good through the first quarter. Hays scored the first seven points of the game and led by nine on two different occasions. Hays led after the first quarter 16-10, but Garden City reversed that score using a 10-2 run to tie the game by half time at 26.

Highlights

Hays took the lead to open the second half on a Brady Werth dunk at 28-26. Isaiah Nunnery then added a three point play to give Hays a 31-30 lead. Garden City would respond with a 13-2 run and lead by 12 after three quarters. The Indians got with in seven at 49-42, but failed to score on the next three possessions. Hays made one last push to get within five 49-44, but Garden City made 9 of 10 free throws over the final 53 seconds.

Hays falls to 7-2 and 2-1 in the WAC. Garden City has won four in a row and is 7-4 and 4-0.

Coach Rick Keltner

Brady Werth scored a game high 21 while Nunnery added 15. Werth is now third all time in scoring at Hays High, passing Jason Ball and Justin Johnson. Werth’s 950 points are two behind Bill Giles and 75 behind the all-time leading scorer Matt Stramel.

Hays is off until next Thursday when they open play in the Colby Orange and Black Classic.

Kaylie Schoendaller signs with DCCC

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Kaylie Schoendaller knew in eighth grade she wanted to play college in softball. Friday the Hays High senior made it a reality by signing her Letter of Intent with Dodge City Community College. Schoendaller appeared in three games her freshman year, but the batting ability was obvious. In eight at bats she had a double and home run while driving in five runs and scoring three times.

Kaylie Schoendaller

It was her sophomore year that turned heads. Schoendaller blasted 11 home runs and drove in 34 runs. Five of those home runs came in a single double header versus Colby. Schoendaller’s power numbers were a bit down during her junior season, but also noticed a trend of opposing pitchers not giving her much to hit either. She is a career .338 hitter with 18 career home runs, which already has set the school career record.

Coach Abby Maska

Schoendaller is looking to work towards a degree in sports management.

Hays High will compete in 4A-D1 in the upcoming softball season.

Boys
Hays 65 – Great Bend 40

Coach Rick Keltner wanted to see his team play tougher than they did the first time Hays and Great Bend met up this year. Back in the second game of the season, Hays beat Great Bend 54-50 in the semi-finals of the Hays City Shootout. Tuesday night, coach Keltner liked the improvement of his team in a 65-40 over the Panthers.

Great Bend led early at 2-0 and 4-2, but Hays went on a 17-0 run that lasted into the second quarter. Isaiah Nunnery scored eleven straight points as part of that run. Great Bend got the game back to single digits just twice in the second quarter, but never closer. Hays High established their biggest lead of the first half with a Keith Dryden three from the corner as the first half clock expired to give Hays a 30-14 lead.
