Indians Split With Liberal

By Dustin Armbruster

Girls
Liberal 47 – Hays 31

Hot shooting in the first quarter gave Liberal a 16-11 lead after the first eight minutes, as Hays couldn’t recover in a 47-31 loss. Hays was outscored in each of the four quarters in the loss, but had chances to close the gap on the Redskins. However, Hays went just 5-18 from the free throw line in the 16 point loss. Audra Schmeidler led the Indians with nine points. Hays falls to 3-4 on the season and 0-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. Liberal improves to 2-5 and 1-0.

Trailing 26-19 at half time, the Indians Talyn Kleweno made a three pointer to open up the second half to get with in four. That would be the closest Hays would be rest of the night. Hays shot just 29 times making 12. Liberal shot 55 times making 15. Liberal also made 12 of 16 free throws.

Boys
Hays 58 – Liberal 49

It took a little bit for Hays to shake the rust off in their first game of 2015. It took 2:53 to score their first points on Liberal, who by then had built a 9-0 lead. Liberal expanded that lead to 10 at 12-2 just over 3:00 into the game. Hays then started to find the range, using a 21-6 run to build a five point lead at 23-18. The lead never grew to more than two points for either team over the final 5:00 of the first half. Liberal hit a three pointer as the first half expired to take a 30-29 lead into the locker room.

The lead swapped back and fourth four times when Liberal took a 36-35 lead midway through the third quarter. It was the Redskins last lead. Hays went on an 11-0 run to close the third quarter with 46-36 lead. Hays pushed the lead as high as 13 in the fourth quarter, ending with a 58-49 win.

Isaiah Nunnery scored a game high 18. Brady Werth scored 17 and grabbed 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Keith Dryden scored 13 in the victory.

Hays shot 52% from the field making 23 of 44 shots and 8 of 11 on free throws. Liberal was just 18 of 58 and 7 for 11 on free throws.

Hays improves to 6-1 on the year and 1-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Liberal falls to 5-2 and 0-1.

The Indians are on the road to Tuesday to play Great Bend.

TMP takes two from Ellis

By JEREMY McGUIRE
HaysPost

Girls:  TMP 70, Ellis 41

TMP took what was a close game in the first half and blew it wide open in the second half.  The Lady Monarchs led 14 to 12 after the first quarter and extended that lead to 35-26 at halftime.  Ellis would score the first five points of the second half and pulled with four points at 35 to 31.  That’s when TMP really stepped on the gas pedal and went on a 22 to two run to end the third quarter the essentially put the game out of reach.  TMP would go on to the 70 to 41 win.

Madyson Koerner scored a season high 17 points points for the Lady Monarchs.  Melissa Pfeifer added 12 and Kayla Vitztu came off of the bench and scored 11.  Skylar Gottschalk was the lone Lady Railer in double figures with 10 points.  TMP improves to six and one on the season, three and oh in the Mid Continent League.  Ellis drops back to .500 at four and four, one and one in the MCL.

ROSE MCFARLAND INTERVIEW

GIRLS HIGHLIGHTS

Boys:  TMP 69, Ellis 55

TMP trailed Ellis five to four early in the first quarter and would never trail again at Ellis High School.  The Monarchs were able to build a seven point lead at the end of the first quarter at 21-14.  TMP would stretch that lead to as many as 15 points in the second quarter before Ellis would punch back with a 12 to two run to end the first half and climb back in the game at 35 to 30.

The Monarch came out strong in the third quarter and led by 16 a couple of times in the quarter. Ellis wasn’t going to lay down as the Raileroaders fought their way back in the game again.  TMP led 55 to 44 after three quarters and Ellis came out firing in the fourth scoring the first seven points of the quarter to pull within four at 55 to 51.

TMP would then proceed to counter punch and slam the door shut by finishing the game on a 14 to four run to pick up the 14 point victory, 69-55.  Jared Vitztum led three Monarchs in double figures with 19 points.  Peyton Hoffman added 11 and Ryan Schippers 10.  Brendon Brenner scored 21 to lead the way for Ellis.  With the win TMP is now three and four overall, two and one in the Mid Continent League.  Ellis drops to six and two overall, one and one in the MCL.

Hays High’s Bo Black one and done, leaving for Shawnee Mission Northwest

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

The Bo Black era at Hays High school lasted all of one season. Coach Black today announced he has accepted a teaching and head football coaching position at Shawnee Mission Northwest.

Black led the Indians to an undefeated Western Athletic Conference title and was named coach of the year. Hays was 7-2 on the year, but missed the playoffs with a 1-2 district record. Black has spent the past 14 seasons in the Western Athletic Conference, 13 of those in Great Bend. Black has an overall coaching record of 89-49.

Coach Black said that he was content with his job in Hays, but when Shawnee Mission Northwest came calling, the opportunity was just too good to pass up. The job opportunity didn’t become available until December and proceeded quickly from there.

Black said of Hays, “It’s a great place to live, it’s a great place to raise a family, it’s a great school district to teach in. (There) are a lot of things that are really, really good here.”

The new job though from a football coaching opportunity was a big draw. “From the football coaching perspective, it’s just a better opportunity professionally with some really good things happening up there.”

The Shawnee Mission Northwest is a 6A school and competes in the Sunflower League. The Cougars went 2-7 this past season and have had losing seasons each of the past four years. The Cougars last made the playoffs in 2010, going 6-5.

Black and his family plan to remain in Hays for the rest of the 2nd semester, where he will serve as head track coach. His wife was also able to find a teaching position in the Shawnee Mission school district.

Joe Hertel’s TMP Monarchs wanted to come out and show some strength and toughness tonight and did just that in a 77-40 win over Oakley at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.  It was the first game at “The Pit” since February 15, 2013 and the Monarchs piled on a 10-nothing first quarter run to take the lead for good at 19 to nine.  Oakley was able to close the gap to 19-11 but that was the last time the Plainsmen were within single digits.

Kameron Schmidt led three Monarchs in double figures with 22 points.  10 players were able to score for the Monarchs who have a break until January 9th in Ellis.

TMP used a 19-0 second quarter run to pull away from Victoria on Tuesday night in Victoria.  The Lady Monarchs trailed 16-15 early in the second quarter when the run started.  TMP would build their lead to 20 points at halftime and were on cruise control the rest of the way.

Megan Koenigsman led three Lady Monarchs in double figures with 16 points.  Melissa Pfeifer scored a season high 14 points and Madyson Koerner added 10.  Kiley Schmidtberger had eight points to lead Victoria.  TMP is now four and one with the win.  Victoria dropped to one and three with the loss.

BOY’S HIGHLIGHTS

Hays sweeps Junction City

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Girls: Hays 54, Junction City 43
The Hays High Lady Indians used strong first and fourth quarters to even their record at 3-3 on the year, beating Junction City(0-4) 54-43 on Tuesday night. Hays used an 11-1 run in the first quarter to take a 11-3 advantage and led 19-8 after the first quarter.

Game Highlights

Junction City’s full court pressured forced the Indians into turnovers over the second and third quarters. That allowed the Lady Blue Jays to use a 9-2 run in the second and 8-0 run in the third to eventually grab the lead at 33-32 with 1:42 remaining in the third quarter.

Hays then reverted back to their first quarter form using a 17-4 run to put the game away.

Kirk Maska Postgame Interview

Hays was led in scoring by Audra Schmeidler who tied her career high with 19 points. Haley George also matched her career high scoring ten points for a second consecutive game. The Indians shot a season high 45% from the field. Hays also out-rebounded Junction City 44-28. Schmeidler grabbed nine, George and Summer Smith each snagged eight boards.

Boys: Hays 69, Junction City 53
Hays and Junction City both started the game shooting lights out. In the end, Junction City just couldn’t keep the pace up. Hays jumped out to an early 5-0 lead then fell behind by five at 15-10 in the first quarter. Hays used an 8-2 run to lead at the end of the first quarter 22-21.

Game Highlights

Early in the second quarter, the Blue Jays again jumped up by five at 29-24 with 5:35 left in the first half. At that point Junction City had made 11 of 20 shots and 6 of 11 three pointers. The Hays defense would hold Junction City with out any more points in the quarter, allowing the Indians to use a 12-0 run, to take a half time lead at 36-29.

Hays would not trail in the second half, though the Blue Jays trimmed the lead to three at 41-38. Hays responded with a 24-5 run to put the game out of reach.

The Indians improved to 5-1 on the season behind 45% shooting, including 7 of 12 behind the arc. After starting 11 of 20, Junction City made just 5 of their next 36 attempts.

Rick Keltner Postgame Interview

The #6 Indians got 20 points and 22 rebounds from Brady Werth. The rebounds marking a new career high. Cash Hobson tied his career high of 18 points and Keith Dryden scored 14. The Indians held a Junction City team that averaged 70 points per game coming in to just 53 points on 29% shooting (15 of 56).

Werth moved into a fifth place tie with Roger Casey (1980) for career scoring at 900 points. Tuesday night, he passed Sean Finn (2000) and Wes Simoneau (1997).

The Hays High Indians are off until January 9th when they travel to play Liberal in the first of four consecutive Western Athletic Conference games.
