Hays High Sweeps Colby

By Dustin Armbruster

The Hays High Indians took their first road test in swing on Thursday night as both the boys and girls win.

Girls
Hays 39 – Colby 35

For the second time this season, the Hays High High Lady Indians beat Colby by four points. Hays previously beat Colby in the consolation semi-finals of the Hays City Shootout. Thursday night, Hays held a 6-5 lead after the first quarter and led 14-10 with just a minute to go until half time. That is when Brenly Terrell hit her third and fourth three pointer of the first half to give Colby a 16-14 lead at half time.

Colby opened up their biggest lead of the game at 23-19 midway through the third quarter, but Hays closed the quarter on a 10-0 run and then added a free throw to start the fourth quarter to take a 30-23 lead. Colby though fought back to force tie scores at 32 and 34. The Lady Eagles took their last lead of the game with a free throw at the 2:26 mark. Hays scored the games last five points off of the game capped with two Summer Smith free throws with thirteen seconds left to secure the win.

Hays was led in scoring by Haley George who was in the double figures for the first time in her career, scoring 10. Hays shot 38% from the field while improving to 2-3 on the year. Colby shot just 29% and committed 33 turnovers and fell to 0-4.

Boys
Hays 79 – Colby 27

It could have been a trap game for Hays. The 3rd ranked team in class 4A-1, playing their fifth game in eight days, went on the road for the first time to take a win less Colby squad that hadn’t played since Saturday. The game was close for the first two minutes as Hays held a 5-4 lead. Hays though found a rhythm on offense and clamped down on defense, using a 16-2 run to grab a 21-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. In that first quarter Keith Dryden scored nine on two three pointers and a three point play. Brady Werth scored five in the first, including an emphatic dunk in which he was fouled and hit the free throw.

The Indians would runs of 10-3, 13-1, 12-0 and 10-0 in taking a fifty point lead to the fourth quarter at 68-18. The fourth quarter was continuous clock and Hays walked away with a 79-27 victory.

Hays shot 55% from the field and made 6 of 18 threes. The Indians free throw shooting continued to signs of improvement, making 13 of 15 on Thursday night. Colby made just 21% of their shots, 1 of 11 three pointers and 6 of 9 free throws. Colby also committed 28 turnovers to the Indian’s 12.

Dryden led the way for Hays scoring a career high 26, coming off his 22 versus Pratt on Tuesday. Werth collected his 10 career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Isaiah Nunnery scored 11 in the victory.

Hays improves to 4-1 on the year. Colby drops to 0-3.

The Indians are back at home on Tuesday to play Junction City.

Hays High fall in Shootout title game

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Boys: Olathe North 45, Hays 32

Hays High got their biggest test of the young season in the championship game of the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout. The Indians ranked 3rd in class 4A-1 took on Olathe North who is ranked 7th in class 6A. Hays took an early 8-3 lead and then closed the first quarter on a run to push the lead back to five at 15-10.

Both Hays and Olathe North battled foul trouble in the second quarter limiting both teams scoring. Hays though didn’t score a field goal and made just four free throws fall behind at half time 23-19.

Hays pushed early in the second half to tie the score at 23 and then took the lead at 30-29 on back to back Keith Dryden field goals. Olathe North though then held Hays to just one field goal over the fourth quarter and finished the game on a 16-2 run, winning 45-32.

Hays shot just 33% from the field 11-33. Out of those shots, Hays was just 3 for 19 on 3’s. Olathe North shot 14 of 40 for 35% and made 3 of 10 3’s. Hays did out rebound the Eagles 31-25, but committed 16 turnovers to North’s four.

Isaiah Nunnery led the way for Hays with 10 points and Brady Werth with 9. Olathe North was led in scoring by RJ Smith 12 and Alonzo Williams with 11. All four were named to the all tournament team.

Hays is now 2-1 on the season and host state ranked Pratt on Tuesday.

Girls: TMP-Marian 53, Hays 27

The Hays High Lady Indians couldn’t buy a basket. It was a trend that would continue for all four quarters as Hays fell to TMP in the 4th place game 53-27.

Hays took their only lead of the game at 5-4 on back to back Mattison Schlaefli baskets with 5:10 remaining in the first quarter. Hays though wouldn’t score for the next 5:25. Despite the scoring drought Hays was able to keep the game close and trailed 17-13 with 3:03 to go in the first half, after to Maddie Keller free throws. Hays then would have to endure another scoring drought, this time for 10:28 seconds and were behind by 14 before the Lady Indians would score again.

Hays shot just 17% from the field 8 for 46. Hays was led in scoring by Schlaefli’s eight points. The Lady Indians fall to 1-2.

Hays will host a ranked Pratt team on Tuesday.

Girls:  TMP 45, Olathe North 41

TMP used a 16 point effort from Megan Koenigsman and Madyson Koerner chipped in another 13 as the Lady Monarchs knocked off the Olathe North Eagles in the consolation semi finals of the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout.  Still playing without Head Coach Rose McFarland, who is recovering from chemotherapy treatments, the ladies showed some toughness in the win.

TMP was able to overcome an early deficit and finally took control of the game in the fourth quarter.  TMP will take on cross town rival Hays High in the fourth place game on Saturday.

Boys:  Newton 50, TMP 47

Jared Vitztum narrowly missed a game tying three pointer in the closing moments of their 50-47 loss to Newton on Friday night.  Vitztum scored 22 to lead the  TMP.  The Monarchs led late but were not able to hold the lead in their second loss to start the season.

TMP will take on Colby Saturday morning at 11:45 in the seventh place game of the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout.

In many ways it was a typical Hays High versus Great Bend game on Friday night. The two Western Athletic Conference rivals battled in the semi-finals of the Gerald Mitchell Hays City Shootout to a 54-50 Hays victory.

Great Bend took an early 3-2 lead but Hays answered with a 8-1 run to lead for the first time by six points at 10-4. That six point margin would be the biggest lead that Hays could secure all night. They led by six on four separate occasions.

With just under 3:00 left in the half Great Bend took their final lead of the game at 17-16. Hays responded with a 7-0 run and took the half time lead at 23-17.

Great Bend got within one point on three separate occasions in the third quarter including back to back three pointers to end the quarter, closing the gap to 33-32.

In the fourth, Hays and Great Bend were tied three times, but each time Hays was able to score and eventually went on a 8-2 run to pull ahead 48-42 with 2:14 remaining and 50-44 with 1:30 left. Hays missed the front end of a pair of one and one opportunities at the free throw line allowing Great Bend the chance to get with in one at 51-50 with four seconds left, but Cash Hobson and Shane Berens connected on 3 of 4 free throws to end the game.

Hays improves to 2-0 on the season. The Indians were led in scoring by Isaiah Nunnery with 15. Brady Werth scored 13. For Great Bend only four players scored but each in double figures. Trey Ibarra and Shade Wondra each had 13. Kody Crosby and Blake Sullivan each added 12.

Hays moves onto the championship game of the Hays City Shootout for the 18th time and will play Olathe North at 7:00 Saturday evening. North beat Garden City 60-58 hitting a pair of free throws with less that a second remaining after leading in by 17 points during the game.
