HHS Lady Indian’ soccer plays to draw

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-Silas Hibbs and his Hays High Lady Indian soccer team are becoming very accustomed to draws. For the second time this week HHS played to a draw with a Western Athletic Conference opponent. This time it was a 1-1 draw with Dodge City, a team they beat on 1-0 in double overtime back on April 2nd in Dodge City.

The two teams played a scoreless first half and the game remained scoreless deep into the second half. In the 72nd minute the Lady Demons took the lead after Hays High goalie Isabel Robben appeared to have the ball kicked out of her hand. No call was made and the Lady Indians trailed for the first time since a 2-1 loss to Maize South on March 28th.

Hays High would have the answer when Sierra Bryant stepped up to take a free kick in the 77th minute. The sailed just past the defenders and through the goalie and tied the game 1-1. The Lady Indians had opportunities in both overtimes but the Dodge City goalie turned back several nice shots by Hays High. The Lady Demons had a golden opportunity to win the match in the second overtime with a penalty shot that Robben denied to preserve the victory.

Hays picks up their fourth draw of the season and go into the final week of the regular season with an overall record of 9-1-4 and 4-0-4 in the WAC. They currently sit in second place in the league and need Garden City to lose on the road in Liberal next Tuesday in order to claim the league crown. The Lady Indians will host Nickerson on Tuesday and travel to Wichita Trinity Academy next Thursday.

HHS and Garden City play to second draw

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-When two quality soccer teams face off against each other the tiniest mistake can make a difference in the final outcome. For the second time this season there were very few mistakes made by the Hays High Lady Indians and the visitors from Garden City as the two teams played to a 0-0, double overtime draw on Monday afternoon at the Hays High Field. This draw came on the heals of a 1-1 draw back on April 15th in Garden City.

Both teams had shots on goal throughout the game but could not capitalize. Two shots from the Lady Indians hit the frame of the goal, one in the first half and one in the second half. Hays was playing short handed with three starters out of the match-up for the top of the Western Athletic Conference. Savannah Schneider  and Kamree Leiker saw limited action due to injury and Kallie Leiker missed due to the National DECA Conference in Orlando.

With the tie Garden City moves to 8-1-3 overall and 5-0-2 in the WAC. They will host TMP on Thursday and will travel to Liberal next Tuesday where they can clinch a league championship with a win in that matchup. Hays moves to 9-1-3 and 4-0-3 in the WAC. The Lady Indians host Dodge City on Thursday where they will need a win to keep their league championship hopes alive.

Hays wins WAC title on senior day

Hays High hosted Liberal on Friday in a wind blown double header.  The evening was also an opportunity for the Indians to honor seniors Willie Sennett, Trey Riggs, Palmer Hutchison, Cody Petersen, Chance Murphy and Brandon Hoffman.

Game 1

Hays 1 – Liberal 0

The first game of the double header featured two of the best pitchers in the Western Athletic Conference.  Trey Riggs started for Hays High while Braxton Hyde got the nod for Liberal.  The two threw up zeroes on the scoreboard through the first three innings with neither pitcher facing much of a threat.

The Indians were able to finally scratch across a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Following three straight singles from Trey Riggs, Brock Lummus, and Dylan Dreiling to load the bases with no outs, Dominque Bainter came to the plate.  He was hit by the next Hyde pitch to send a run home.  That is all the Indians would get though as Hyde got a strike out and a double play to work out of trouble.

Game 1 Highlights

That was all Trey Riggs needed.  The senior stranded a runner at third in the fifth following an error and two wild pitches, stranded a runner at second in the sixth following a one out double, and runners at first and second with two outs in the seventh.

The 1-0 victory pushes Riggs’ record to 4-1 and marks the sixth time he has gone seven innings in a game during his career.  He struck out eight and walked just one.  Liberal’s Hyde struck out six, walked three and hit one batter.  His record drops to 5-1 but will improve on his 0.85 ERA to 0.71.

Game 2

Hays 13 – Liberal 3 (5 Innings)

Game two seemed to have the same makings of the first game.  A scoreless first inning gave way to a three run third by the Indians off the bat of Cody Petersen who drove in two runs on a single.  The Indians led 3-1 after the second inning.  Liberal scored off of two Hays errors and a wild pitch in the top of the third inning for a 3-1 score.

The Indians put little doubt into the outcome of the game in the bottom of the third.  Hays sent 14 to the plate against three different pitchers resulting in 10 runs.  Every batter in the lineup scored a run in the inning, Justus Dotts scored two as a courtesy runner for Brock Lummus who reached on a pair of hits.

Game 2 Highlights

Liberal scored two in the top of the fourth but would get no closer.  Hays closed the game out by run rule 13-3 in the fifth.

Palmer Hutchison takes the win and moves to 4-0 on the year.

Coach Frank Leo

With the double header sweep Hays wins their 18th Western Athletic Conference title under coach Frank Leo.  The Indians are now 13-1 on the season and Liberal drops to 10-6.

Hays will host the Diamond Classic tournament next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Leiker’s hat trick pushes Hays High past TMP

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

HAYS, Kan.-When Kallie Leiker showed up to the Bickle-Schmidt Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon to face her cross town rivals she wanted to win. Little did she know how instrumental she would be in helping the Hays High Lady Indian soccer team in their 5-0 win over TMP. Leiker finished the match with a hat trick, the first of the season for Hays.

It took a little while for the Lady Indians to get things going in the first half. Leiker found the back of the net in the 20th minute to give Hays the 1-0 lead. A little over eight minutes later Leiker struck again with a goal in the 28th minute and a 2-0 lead. Maggie Robben tallied the final goal of the first half with just 22 seconds remaining to give the Lady Indians a commanding 3-0 lead at the halftime break.

The TMP defense was tough to break in the second half but Leiker finally broke through in the 72nd minute to complete the hat trick and to give her team a 4-0 lead. Isabel Robben didn’t waste any time with the Lady Indians’ fifth and final goal of the match as she scored 46 seconds later for the 5-0 Hays High victory. Hays continues an impressive season on both offense and defense as they have outscored their opponents 39-5 on the season.

TMP drops to 0-9 and will travel to Great Bend on Monday. Hays High improves to 9-1-2 and await a visit from Garden City on Monday in Hays.
