By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

The Hays High Indians wrapped up three consecutive road games with a 42-28 win at Garden City on Friday night. Hays scored two touchdowns on their first five plays of offense and took a 14-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Alex Delton scored on runs of 84 and 55 yards for the first two Indian’s touchdowns. Garden City fought back with a 6 play 50 yard scoring drive following a Hays fumble on their third series. The Buffalo’s Jared Koster scored from six yards out closing the score to 14-7 early in the second.

Following a Hays three and out, Garden City drove inside the Hays ten yard line. Shane Berens though jarred the ball free on a quarterback draw and Hayden Kreutzer recovered the fumble to set the Indians up from their own seven yard line. Two plays later Delton again scored from 84 yards out to give Hays a 21-7 half time lead.

Game Highlights

Garden City opened the second half with the ball but fumbled and threw an interception on their first two possessions. Hays capitalized on each of the Buffalo mistakes scoring on a one yard Isaiah Blackmon run and 75 yard Delton run. Plainville 12, TMP 7

Plainville picked up their first win of the season on Friday night with a 12-7 win over TMP at Lewis Field Stadium.  It was a defensive battle for most of the night.  Plainville picked up the first score of the night on a 10 yard touchdown run by quarterback Ryan Buresh.  TMP would answer with a 14 play, 91 yard drive capped of by a 15 yard touchdown pass from Max Megaffin to TJ Flax.  The Monarchs would add the extra point to take a seven to six lead at halftime.

Plainville would score the only points of the second half on a 49 yard touchdown run from Hayden Friend with 50 seconds to go in the third quarter.  The Cardinals would miss the two point conversion and held a 12 to seven lead the would hold up to be the final score.  TMP played the final four plus minutes with freshman quarterback David McFarland who replaced Megaffin who left with a left knee injury.

Plainville will host Norton next Friday and TMP will continue to search for their first win of the season on the road at Cimarron.

KSHSAA announces state baseball and softball sites

KSHSAA

TOPEKA, Kan. — The 2015 KSHSAA State Baseball and Softball Tournaments will return to Pratt and Great Bend for the 2-1A tournaments while 6A softball heads to newly-constructed Rock Chalk Park. All tournaments are scheduled forMay 28th and 29th, 2015.

The softball field at Rock Chalk Park will be open for play this season for the Kansas Jayhawk softball team and will now host the 6A state softball tournament this spring. “Blue Valley West did a great job hosting the 6A softball tournament the last few years and the KSHSAA is grateful for their work managing the two-day tournament,” said KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director, Francine Martin. “We are excited about the opportunity to host the 6A tournament now at the state-of-the-art facility, Rock Chalk Park.”

Having the 6A softball tournament in Lawrence will mirror the 6A baseball tournament being hosted at Hoglund Stadium on the University of Kansas campus.

The 2-1A baseball and softball tournaments will have a little different feel this year with baseball being hosted in Great Bend and softball in Pratt. Both communities held tournaments in 2014; Pratt hosted 4A DII baseball and softball while Great Bend hosted the 2-1A tournaments.

The 5A baseball and softball tournaments will go back to Wichita after having a year in Manhattan. Wichita State’s Eck Stadium will host the baseball tournament and Two Rivers Youth Complex gears up for the softball slate of competition.

As mentioned, Manhattan, who has a terrific host for a number of KSHSAA events, brought in class 5A in 2014 but will switch back to hosting class 3A for baseball and softball.

Topeka will play host to a second consecutive year of baseball and softball tournaments with class 4A DII coming to the state’s capitol at the Topeka USD 501 Hummer Sports Complex.

For the 20th consecutive year, Salina will host a state baseball and softball tournament. Class 4A DI returns to Dean Evans Stadium and Bill Burke Complex for the second year.

TMP falls short in Smith Center

By JEREMY McGUIRE

Smith Center 30, TMP 22

In by far their best effort of the season the TMP Monarchs came up just short in Smith Center on Friday night, losing 30-22 to the state ranked Redmen. It was a tight game throughout with Smith Center scoring the first points of the night midway through the second quarter on a 34 yard Kody Zabel field goal. TMP would answer back with just over three minutes to play in the half on a one yard touchdown run from Nick Schmidt to give the Monarchs their first lead of the game and the entire season. Smith Center came right back down the field and were able to take the lead going into the half when Nick Lehmkuhl found the end zone from a yard out to take a 10 to seven halftime lead.

The two teams would trade a possession in the third quarter before TMP would begin a march of their own. The Monarchs went on an 87 yard scoring drive capped off by a Jared Schumacher 8 yard touchdown reception from Max Megaffin. That would give TMP a 14 to 10 lead heading to the fourth quarter.

Smith Center took control in the fourth outscoring the Monarchs 20 to eight in the fourth quarter to pick up the 30-22 victory. The Redmen are now 3-0 on the season and will play at Norton this coming Friday. TMP is 0-3 and will host Plainville at Lewis Field Stadium.

Hays Holds Off Liberal Comeback For Win

By Dustin Armbruster

Midway through the second quarter it looked as if the Hays High Indians were going to run away with their third victory of the season. Leading 28-0 the Indians had forced Liberal to punt on four consecutive possessions. Hays in the meantime had scored touchdowns on their first four. Alex Delton scored on the first play of a drive twice on runs of 57 and 49 yards. Adam Klaus scored on a 10 yard run and Isaiah Blackmon scored from four yards out.

Liberal needed something positive to happen and they found their spark on an 85 yard kick-off return for a touchdown by Mershek Wiltshire, cutting the score to 28-7. Liberal had one more chance to score before the end of the first half following an Indian punt. The Redskins drove to the nine yard line but could not score before the clock expired.

Hays High received the football to open the second half, but fumbled on the first play setting up Liberal for a 10 play, 41 yard drive that resulted in a Jared Hasik 16 yard touchdown run. With the lead cut down to 28-14, Hays drove inside the 20 on the next possession, but again fumbled the ball. Liberal was forced to punt, but Hays turned the ball over on downs.

Liberal wasted little time scoring, using a 48 yard run by quarterback Jared Hasik to make it a one score game at 28-21.

Hays though would get the offense in gear, but it took a little luck. Delton broke off a 42 yard run, but fumbled at the one yard line running through a tackle. The ball traveled into the end zone where it was recovered by Maddux Winter for the score. It was the second time in two weeks the Indians fumbled inside the five yard line, but recovered the ball for a touchdown.

Hays led 35-21 when Liberal had a luck play of their own. Hasik passed to the left side, only to have the ball go through the hands of a receiver and end up in the grasp of running back Jared Carrol who raced 63 yards for a 35-28 score with 7:27 remaining in the game.

It took Hays just three plays to score using runs from Delton of 48 and 4 yards, to set up a 12 yard score from Klaus. The Indians sixth rushing touchdown of the night proved to the final points of the evening at 42-28.

Delton ran for 265 yards on 13 carries as the Hays High piled up 451 total yards, 388 on the ground. Liberal totaled 311 yards in the loss.

Hays is 3-0 and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Liberal drops to 1-2 and 0-1 in league play. Hays travels to 1-2, 1-0 Garden City Friday. Liberal is home to 2-1, 0-0 Dodge City.
