TMP baseball ends 6-game road trip with a pair of wins

The TMP-Marian baseball team closed out their six-game road swing to start the season with a 5-1 record after a pair of road wins in Ellis Tuesday. The Monarchs win the opener 20-2 in three innings then take the second contest 13-0 in five innings.

TMP had 30 hits in the two games, 15 for extra bases including five home runs.

The Monarchs host Hoisington in their home opener Thursday.

Ellis drops to 4-4.

TMP-Marian softball sweeps Ellis

The TMP-Marian softball team moved back to 500 with a pair of wins in Ellis Tuesday. The Monarchs win 10-1 and 17-9 to even their record at 5-5.

Alison Helget allowed just three hits while striking out six to get the win in the first game. Kelli Veach and Katelynn Zimmerman both had three RBI’s in the game.

Ellis took the early lead in the second game, scoring six in the first inning, but the Monarchs tied it up in fifth then scored nine runs over the final two innings. Helget pitches six innings of relief allowing seven hits and striking out seven for the win. Morgan Choitz went 4-for-4.

The Monarchs are off until the 24th when they host Ellinwood.

HHS holds own tennis invitational

The Hays High boys Gold team finished fourth and the Maroon team fifth at their own tennis invitational which was held Tuesday at Hays High School.

The gold team was led by the No. 1 doubles team of Andrew McGinnis and Austin Berry who went 4-0 and finished first.

HHS girls’ soccer runs win streak to three

The Hays High girls’ soccer team ran their win streak to three and they didn’t need overtime to do it. After winning their last two contests in overtime, the Indians defeat Junction City 5-2 in regulation. The Indians erased a two-goal first half deficit to beat Junction City 5-2 Monday.

Rachel Luedders scored on a penalty in the 33rd minute to get the Indians on the board. Alexa Brull tied the match in the 49th minute off a corner from Brooke Russell. She then put the Indians ahead for good on an assist from Talyn Kleweno in the 54th minute. Blair Street and Tressa Becker both scored late in the match for the final margin.

The Indians are now 5-2 on the season and play their first home match since their season opener in late March when they host Great Bend Tuesday at 4pm at Hays High School.

Former K-State and Wichita State basketball players coming to Hays for benefit game

Members of this past season’s Kansas State and Wichita State basketball teams will be in Hays for a benefit game. The Wichita State-Kansas State All-Stars Barnstorming Tour 2014 basketball game will take place on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Hays High School.

The barnstormers will take on high school players from the Hays area.  Some of the college players scheduled to play are Kansas State’s Will Spradling and Shane Southwell along with Wichita State’s Nick Wiggins and Chadrack Lufile.  Other players from those universities may also play.

The cost of the game is $10.  There will be an autograph session from 6-6:45 pm with the game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.

Tickets can be purchased at the gate on the day of the game or can be purchased before April 23rd at the Hays High athletic office between the hours of 8:15-4pm Monday through Friday.

Ellis baseball sweeps Leoti

The Ellis baseball team scored 40 runs Friday, sweeping Leoti 25-10 and 15-0 to move to 4-2 on the season. After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning in game one, the Railers put 17 runs on the board in the bottom of the inning and never trailed again. They score score the 25 runs on just 10 hits, taking advantage of five Leoti errors. Scott Pfeifer had three hits including a double and a triple and drove in seven.

Ellis scored four in the first, seven in the second and then four more in the third in the second game which ended after three innings due to run rule. Easton Smith and Clayton Feik both had two of Ellis’ nine hits with Feik driving in four runs. Dalton Hensley tripled for the Railers only extra base hit. Smith also pitched three innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four and walking one to pick up the win.

The Railers host TMP-Marian Tuesday.

TMP girls’ soccer blanks Dodge City

The TMP-Marian girls’ soccer team wins their second straight, defeating Dodge City 2-0 Thursday. Sophomore Bailey Hageman and junior Alyssa Keil scored the Monarchs goals as they improve to 2-1.

TMP travels to Wichita Independent on Monday.

HHS boys golfers fifth at McPherson

The Hays High boys golf team finished fifth at the McPherson Invitational Thursday. The Indians shot a 333 and were 18 shots behind first-place Buhler.

Nathan Romme was the only medalist for the Indians, finishing 11th with an 11-over 81. Hutchinson’s Turner Wintz won the tournament with a one-over 71.

HHS softball cruises to doubleheader sweep in Dodge City

A two-week layoff didn’t appear to effect the Hays High softball team as they cruised to a pair of run-rule wins in Dodge City Thursday. Hanna Hearld allowed just one hit, striking out 10 and walking one in a five-inning 17-0 win in game one. Hearld and Madison Prough combined to allow just one hit in a 16-0 win in the second game which ended after three innings.

After two scoreless innings in the opener, the Indians exploded for eight runs in the third. They added five in the fourth and four in the fifth. Tessa Stickel hit a grand slam and drove in five.

The Indians struck for two in the first, nine in the second and five in the third in the second contest. Hearld, Albany Schaffer and Kaylie Schoendaller all homered in game two. Schaffer and Nicole Dinkel both drove in three.

The Indians are now 4-0 and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. They play at Salina South on Thursday April 17th.
