HHS girls’ soccer rallies for overtime win in Liberal

For a second straight game, the Hays High girls’ soccer team comes from behind to win in overtime. The latest was Thursday in Liberal where they come back for a 4-3 win in two overtimes.

The Indians trailed 1-0 at the half and were down 2-0 early in the second until a goal from Tressa Becker with an assist from Rachel Luedders four minutes in made it 2-1. Maddie Keller, assisted by Reagan Kaiser, tied the match at 2-2 in the eighth minute of the second half.

After Liberal scored in the 31st minute, Talyn Kleweno scored the equalizer on an assist from Tressa Becker with two minutes to play to force the overtime.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Brooke Russell netted the game winner on a free kick with 22 seconds to play.

The win lifts the Indians to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Parker no hitter helps HHS baseball to split in WAC opener

The Hays High baseball team split their Western Athletic Conference opening doubleheader at Dodge City Tuesday. The Red Demons get a two-out bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to win game one 2-1. Kade Parker pitched a no-hitter in the Indians 5-0 win in game two.

Lane Downing allowed just one unearned run on seven hits in the complete game loss in the first contest. He also drove in the Indians only run with a solo home run.

Parker walked one and struck out seven in the second game, picking up his first win of the season. Hays scored two in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Cole Schumacher, Kade Parker and Marcus Altman all had two hits.

Hays is now 2-2 on the year and 1-1 in the WAC.  They’re off until next Tuesday when they host Junction City.

Ellis baseball swept in home opener

The Ellis baseball team was swept in their home opener by Larned. The Railers lost 12-6 in the opener then 13-0 in game two. They are now 2-2 on the season. They continue their six-game homestand Friday against Leoti.

Game 1: Larned 12, Ellis 6
The Railers struck for four runs in the bottom of the first but Larned came back with two in the second then took the lead for good with a five-run third.

Freshman Easton Smith went 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Senior Braden Parke doubled and drove in two.

Game 2: Larned 13, Ellis 0
Larned scored in every inning but one, jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. They were up 5-0 when they put the game away with an with an eight-run sixth.

The Railers were held to two singles in the game.

TMP-Marian softball sweeps Sylvan-Lucas

The TMP-Marian softball team wins two at Sylvan-Lucas Tuesday by  scores of 18-2 and 12-4.  Laurel Hageman and Alison Helget combine on a no-hitter in the opener. Heidi Gottschalk had two of TMP’s 11 hits including a triple.

In game two, Hageman pitched six innings striking out 10. Katelyn Zimmerman went 2-for-2 and Kelli Veach drove in three.

The Monarchs are now 3-3. They play a makeup doubleheader at Garden City Thursday.

HHS girls’ soccer defeats Dodge City in OT

The Hays High girls’ soccer team ended their two-game skid with a 2-1 overtime win at Dodge City Tuesday.

Wendy Zimmerman scored with an assist from Rachel Luedders with 32:01 to play in the second half to tie the match 1-1. Talyn Kleweno tallied the game winner with 3:23 to play in overtime off a corner kick from Brooke Russell.

The Indians are now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the WAC. They travel to Liberal tomorrow.

HHS Weigel takes first place at national tournament

Hays High senior Preston Wiegel takes first place at the USA Wrestling Cliff Keen Folkstyle National in Cedar Rapids, Iowa over the weekend.

After receiving a first-round bye, Weigel won three straight matches by technical fall. He then defeated Carter Isley of Iowa 8-0 in a major decision in the title match at 195.

Weigel is a three-time state champion, going more than two seasons without losing a match.

HHS girls’ soccer falls in McPherson Invite semifinals

The Hays High girls’ soccer team dropped their semifinal match of the McPherson Invitational 4-0 to Maize South Friday night. The Mavericks held a 1-0 lead at the half following a goal at 32:52.

They would score again at 32:13 then add two more less than a minute apart at 18:16 and 17:23 for the final margin.

Hays had six shots on goal to the Mavericks 10. Both goalies recorded six saves.

The Indians are now 2-1 on the season and will play Newton in the third-place match at 2pm Saturday. The Railers lost 2-1 to Andover Central in the other semifinal Friday.

HHS baseball and softball postponed

Hays High’s baseball and softball doubleheaders with Pratt have been postponed due to weather. Both will be made up on Thursday, April 24th at 4pm.

The 1-1 Indian baseball team’s next action will be April 8th at Dodge City. The 2-0 softball team will travel to Dodge City on April 10th.

TMP-Marian baseball sweeps Scott City

A good start for the TMP-Marian baseball team as they pick up a pair of run-rule wins over Scott City in their season opener.

The Monarchs, who lose just one player from last year’s 15-7 squad, won game one 24-0 in three innings then took game two 18-5 in six innings.

TMP is off until next Tuesday when they travel to Garden City in the middle two games of their six-game road trip to start the season.

HHS girls’ soccer wins McPherson Invitational opener

The Hays High girls’ soccer advances to the semifinals of the McPherson Invitational after a 3-1 win over Topeka High in the quarterfinals yesterday. Talyn Kleweno scorede the Indians first goal in the 20th minute on an assist from Wendy Zimmerman. Rachel Luedders made it 2-0 with a goal in the 48th minute with a cross from Kleweno. Hays went up 3-0 on a Zimmerman goal in the 61st minute. Topeka avoided the shutout with a goal in the 73rd minute.

The Indians are now 2-0 and will play Maize South in the semifinals at six o’clock on Friday.
