TMP girls win, boys lose

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls:  TMP 55, Larned 42
Freshman Madyson Koerner had a career high 15 points to help lead the TMP Lady Monarchs to their sixth win of the season.  TMP trailed twice early in the game but pulled ahead 12 to nine after the first quarter and never trailed again.  The Lady Monarchs used a 17-0 run from the first quarter into the second quarter to lead 27-9.  Larned cut the lead to 12 at halftime, 32-20.

The third quarter belonged to TMP, outscoring Larned 18-8 to take their largest lead of 22 points heading into the fourth quarter.

Larned was able to cut the lead to as little as 12 but never made a serious push.

TMP is now 6-11 on the season and will be on the road at Plainville on Friday night.

Boys:  Larned 73, TMP 71  OT
It took Larned four extra minutes in overtime to knock of TMP on Thursday, 73-71.  It was a knock down, drag out affair most of the night with the Indians leading most of the game.  TMP trailed 22-13 after the first quarter and then clamped down defensively in the second quarter and also started heating up their basket, outscoring Larned 16 to 10 to trail only 32-29 at halftime.

The Monarchs were able to tie the game at 34 early in the third quarter.  Larned would then rattle off the next 10 points and led 44-34 late in the third.  TMP closed the third quarter on a quick five to two run to pull within seven heading to the fourth.

This is when the true fireworks began as both teams laid everything out on the floor.  Larned kept the Monarchs at arms length through most of the quarter and led 64-57 at the two minute mark.  TMP outscored the Indians eight to one down the stretch and a Ryan Mayorga jumper from the baseline at the buzzer tied the game at 65 and to overtime these two teams went.

TMP would take the lead for the only time in the extra period on a Jordan Gottschalk layup, taking a 67-65 lead.  Larned’s Easton Palmer would nail a three on their next possession to give the lead back to the Indians for good.  TMP had a chance to win in the end but a Jordan Gottschalk three point attempt missed to the left.

TMP is now 9-8 on the year and will play their fourth game in five days on Friday night in Plainville.

The Lady Indians had just one less field goal (16 to 17) in the game and made six more three pointers (8-2).  But Abilene out scored Hays 23-8 from the free throw line in the 11 point difference.

Bo Black named new Hays High football coach

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

The search for a head football coach at Hays High school is over. The school announced this morning they have hired former Great Bend head coach Bo Black to lead the Indians starting in 2014.

Hays narrowed their list down to six candidates over the past six weeks and held interviews over two days last week.

Black accepted the position Friday and informed his Great Bend players of his decision this morning.

Black spent 13 years at Great Bend with a record of 82-47.  He led the Panthers to a 5A State runner-up finish in 2006 finishing 11-2.  The Panthers won eight Western Athletic Conference titles, including six in-a-row and led Great Bend to eight playoff appearances.

Before coaching the Panthers, Black was an assistant coach at Lancaster High School in Texas for five years. Black is a graduate of Emporia State where he played football for the Hornets.

Against Hays, Black went 9-4, winning in the first nine meetings. His teams only finished lower than second on the WAC once which was this past season.

Black is scheduled to meet with the Hays High players today.

Black and his wife Stefanie have two children, Hannah 12 and Ty 11.

Black takes over Ryan Cornelsen from who spent five years as the Hays High head coach before accepting the same position at Hutchinson in early January.

Below is an interview with the Hays High Indian head coach Bo Black…

The last run of the night belonged to Ellinwood.  The Lady Eagles finished the game on a 15 to one run to dash TMP’s hopes of upsetting the number four ranked team in 2A.  Melissa Pfeifer and Samantha Younie scored nine points apiece to lead TMP.  The Lady Monarchs dropped to five and 10 overall and will play Hoisington Tuesday night at Hays Middle School.

Rose McFarland Interview

Boys:  TMP 63, Ellinwood 41
A slow start turned into a big finish for the TMP Monarchs in their 63-41 win on Monday night in Ellinwood.  The Monarchs jumped out of the gates slow, using Max Megaffin three pointers at the end of the first quarter and then again at the end of the first half to take a 29-18 lead at the break.  Ellinwood would cut the lead to as little as seven points in the third quarter but that would be as close as they would get.

Megaffin led Joe Hertel’s Monarchs with 20 points on the night.  Ryan Mayorga chipped in 12 for the eight and seven Monarchs who will  host Hoisington, a team they beat 49-31 on January 30th, Tuesday night at Hays Middle School.

Hays High splits in Liberal

By DUSTIN ARMBRUSTER
Hays Post

Girls: Liberal 56 – Hays 49
It took longer than most would think, but the Hays High Lady Indians started to click on Friday night in Liberal.  Hays led 15-12 after the first quarter and 28-27 at halftime against the Liberal Redskins.

Hays though would only lead one other time in the second half at 30-29 with 6:50 to go in the third quarter.

Liberal went on a 6-0 run to take a 35-30 lead, one they would never give up.  Hays trailed by five entering the fourth quarter and quickly cut it to two at 40-38 on a three pointer by Audra Schmeidler, but that is all the closer the Lady Indians would get.  Liberal went on a 14-1 run to push their lead up to 15 with 2:51 left in the game.

Hays did make one last charge scoring seven straight cutting the score to 54-46, before falling to 0-15 by the final of 56-49.  Liberal improves to 7-9 on the year and 2-3 in the WAC.  Hays is 0-5 in conference play.

Audra Schmeidler and Brooke Russell each had 13 including three treys each.  Schmeidler added 12 rebounds for her first double-double.  She has 23 rebounds over the past two games.

By JEREMY McGUIRE
Hays Post

Girls: TMP 60, Scott City 25
TMP stormed out of the gate against Scott City with a 10-0 run and never looked back. The Lady Monarchs led 30-13 at the break and came out firing again in the third quarter on another 10-0 run. Rose McFarland Interview

Boys: Scott City 55, TMP 48
A hard fought effort wasn’t enough for TMP on Friday night against Scott City, falling 55-48 to the Beavers.  TMP led throughout much of the first half and a good majority of the third quarter.  The Monarchs trailed by four points going into the fourth quarter, 42-38.  TMP started the quarter on an eight to three run and led by one late and that’s when Scott City poured it on. The Beavers finished the game on a 10 to two run to pick up win number 14 on the season.

TMP drops back to five hundred at seven and seven.  They will be on the road at Ellinwood on Monday.
