Wichita Northwest Cruises Past Lady Indians

Hays High fell down 12 to two early in their consolation semifinal matchup with the Wichita Northwest Grizzlies and never recovered, losing 54-24. The Lady Indians were able to make a bit of a charge to close the gap to four points midway through the second quarter but Wichita Northwest took control from there leading by nine at the break.

The second half wasn’t much better for Hays High. The Lady Indians were outscored 30 to 19 and dropped there 12th game of the season. Audra Schmeidler led Hays High with eight points. The Lady Indians will face off against Gardner Edgerton in the 7th Place game of the Mid America Classic in McPherson on Saturday at 2pm.

TMP sweeps Hoisington

Girls: TMP 50, Hoisington 45
Megan Koenigsman scored 18 points and helped lead TMP to a 50-45 win over Hoisington on Thursday. The TMP freshman had 11 first half points and seven in the second half including some key free throws in the final minute to help seal the win for TMP. The Lady Monarchs led by three at the half and hung on for dear life in the fourth quarter. Melissa Pfeifer added 11 points for TMP.

The win snapped a three game losing streak and notched the first league win on the season for TMP. The Lady Monarchs step right back into Mid Central Activities Association play on Tuesday in Ellinwood.

Boys: TMP 49, Hoisington 31
TMP used a 12-2 run to end the first quarter to grab a 16-6 lead after one and take control of the game against their rivals from Hoisington. The game would never be any closer then eight the rest of the game. Kameron Schmidt continues to power the Monarchs, scoring 16 points in the win.

With the win TMP is over .500 for the first time all year with a record of 7-6 and 2-1 in the Mid Central Activities Association. The Monarchs will be on the road on Tuesday to face Ellinwood.

Hays Girls Fall in McPherson

The Hays High Lady Indians opened the Mid-America Basketball Tournament in McPherson with a 60-24 loss to Manhattan on Thursday evening. Manhattan is ranked fourth in class 6A and the game was the sixth ranked opponent for the Hays girls in their eleven games this season.

Haley Wells tied the game at 2-2 at the 6:40 mark of the first quarter as both teams struggled to score over the first three minutes of the game. Manhattan though would used a 13-2 run taking an eleven point lead early in the second quarter. Manhattan then went on a 9-0 run in the later stages of the second quarter taking a 26-7 lead and eventually lead 28-9 at half time.

Manhattan made sure to put the game to rest with a 17-0 run over a 6:00 span of the third quarter while holding Hays to just two points in the third.

Hays trailed 47-11 after three quarters before scoring 13 points in the fourth quarter.

Audra Schmeidler scored a team high 8 points for Hays. The Indians shot 10 for 36 in game and 1 of 6 on three point attempts. Manhattan was 24 for 64 and just 2 of 16 on 3’s. The Lady Indians committed 30 turnovers in the loss.

Hays drops to 0-11 on the year while Manhattan is now 12-1. Their only loss was by two against Great Bend before Christmas.

Hays will play Wichita Northwest at 3:00 on Friday. Northwest lost 53-36 in the first round of the tournament to Shawnee Mission South.

Hays High boys take over top-spot in 5A boys basketball poll

Three straight wins at the Dodge City Tournament of Champions including a 10-point victory over Wichita East, who was the No. 2 ranked team in 6A in the title game, has propelled the Hays High boys basketball team to the No. 1 ranking in the latest KBCA 5A poll. The Indians are now 12-0 on the year. Lansing is ranked No. 2 followed by Goddard-Eisenhower, Topeka Highland Park and Wichita Heights.. Salina Central is ranked seventh.

Other area teams in this week’s poll includes the Plainville boys at No. 3 in Class 2A. The Stockton boys are seventh and La Crosse 10th in 1A Division I and Otis-Bison No. 9 in 1A Division II.

The Osborne girls’ are sixth and Victoria ranked 10th in 1A Division I.

Hays High wins Dodge City Tournament of Champions

DODGE CITY — Something had to give. Two 11-0 teams in the championship of the Dodge City Tournament of Champions represented in Hays and Wichita East.

The hype and build up of the game became realized after Hays went on a 9-0 run in the first quarter to take a 12-8 lead. Hays led after the first quarter 14-12 despite Brady Werth picking up two fouls in the first 58 seconds of the game.

Hays led 22-21 heading towards half time but the Wichita East Blue Aces scored the last three points of the half to take 24-22 lead at half.

The big quarter for Hays came in the third. Tied at 29 Hays went on a 14-2 run taking the biggest lead of the night 43-31. East cut the lead down to seven on several occasions and eventually down to five at 56-51, but never got any closer with Hays winning 61-51.

Hays made 17 of 21 free throws and shot 44% from the field at 19 for 43. East shot 37% 20 of 54.

Brady Werth led the Indians with 17 points, Jordan Windholz scored 13 and Clayton Riedel scored 11 off the bench. Werth and Windholz were named to the all tournament team. Werth was name the tournaments Most Inspirational Player. Hays moves to 12-0 on the season. The Blue Aces are 11-1.

Indians Move On To Championship Game

Wins sometimes come easy…sometimes it seems like even the rim wants you to lose. When trying to move to 11-0 on the season, at some point the wins don’t come easy. Friday night at the Dodge City Tournament of Champions semi-finals NOTHING came easy for Hays High.

Hays jumped out to an early 10-6 lead half way through the first quarter over Manhattan. The Indians had several opportunities to pull away but a cold night shooting and an even worse night at the free throw line allowed Manhattan to take the lead early in the second quarter at 14-12. Neither team was stellar in the first half and were tied at 17 a piece through the first two quarters.

Manhattan again lead by one or two points for a majority of the third quarter when Isaiah Nunnery and Jordan Windholz each hit a three pointer to give Hays a 26-21 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Those two three gave Hays a lead they never let go of.

Manhattan hit a three to open the fourth, before Hays pushed the lead up to six again. Manhattan again pushed back getting with in one at 34-33 with 2:30 to go in the game. Manhattan started to foul Hays High, who had been terrible at the free throw line making just 6 of 15 attempts. But over the final 2:21 Hays made 8 of 10 free throws and allowed just a single three point field goal allowing Hays to escape with a 42-36 win and stay undefeated at 11-0. Manhattan falls to 7-3.

Hays was led by Jordan Windholz scoring 19. He was the only player in the game to score in double figures.

Hays shot just 38% 12 of 32 and made just 4 of 16 threes. Manhattan was 14 of 36 for 39% and 5 of 16 beyond the arc. Hays made a living a the line finishing 14 of 25. Manhattan was just 3 of 6.

Hays will play undefeated Wichita East in the finals of the tournament Saturday night at 6:00. East is ranked #2 in 6A. Hays is ranked #3 in 5A.

Lady Monarchs Fall to Goodland

Offensive struggles continued on Friday for the TMP Lady Monarchs in their 35-27 loss to Goodland in the consolation semi-finals of the 20th Annual Hillsboro Trojan Classic. TMP scored only 12 first half points but trailed by only five points at half time. Only four Lady Monarchs scored in the first half.

The third quarter was not kind to TMP either. They were outscored seven to four and trailed 24 to 16 going into the fourth quarter. The Lady Monarchs were able to get within six a couple of times but that would be as close as they would get the rest of the game. Melissa Pfeifer led TMP with 10 points. The Lady Monarchs will play the 7th Place game on Saturday at 11:30.

TMP boys take Goodland in overtime

The TMP Monarchs needed overtime on Thursday to take out the Goodland Cowboys 54-48 in the consolation semifinals at the Hillsboro Trojan Classic. TMP trailed by two at halftime and held a slim, 34-33, lead heading into the fourth quarter. That’s when both offenses struggled. The game was tied at 38 points apiece heading into overtime.

In the extra period the Monarch offense woke up scoring 16 points to secure the win. Several key plays down the stretch including a corner 3-pointer from Max Megaffin that stretched a one-point lead to four in the overtime.

Jordan Gottschalk led TMP with 13 points while Gage Ihrig poured in 24 to pace the Cowboys. TMP is now five and six on the season and will face Riley County in the fifth-place game at 1pm on Saturday.

Hays High wins TOC opener

The final margin of Hays High’s opening round win over Hutchinson in the Dodge City Tournament of Champions was 21 points. The game however was much closer than the score indicated.

Neither team scored over the first two minutes of the ball game when Kade Parker and Lane Clark hit back to back three pointers to take a 6-0 lead. Hutchinson got with in one point at 8-7 but never was able to take the lead after Clark hit another three pointer, this one with three seconds left in the first quarter to give Hays a 14-9 lead.

The Indians turned that three pointer into a 13-2 run and lead by as many at 13 in the first half and settled for a ten point halftime lead 29-19.

Each team scored 11 points in the third quarter. Eight of those points came from Brady Werth who had scored only six points in the first half and none in the first quarter.

Less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, Hays built their lead to 12, but Hutchinson scored six straight getting within six at 45-39 with 5:00 to go in the game. That is when Hays High played their best ball of the night out scoring the Salthawks 17-2 rest of the way for the 62-41 win.

Brady Werth led the team with 26 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocks. Werth was 10-11 from the free throw line. Lane Clark added 14 and was 4-5 on threes.

As a team Hays shot 59% in the second half and 46% for the game 18-39. Hays was 7-18 on threes and made 19 of 22 free throws. Hutchinson was 15-42 from the field for 36% and made 6 of 16 beyond the arc. The Salthawks shot just 10 free throws and made 5.

Hays moves to 10-0 on the year and moves onto the semi-finals of the Tournament of Champions where they will take on Manhattan who upset #5 in 5A Wichita Heights in over time.

Hutchinson drops to 3-7.

Game time is set for 7:00 from the United Wireless Arena in Dodge City.
