Hays High 2-0 With Win Over McPherson

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

Two home games and two wins for the Hays High Indians as they beat McPherson 37-23 on Friday night at Lewis Field Stadium.

Hays jumped to a 17-0 lead after the first quarter on a six yard touchdown run by Preston Weigel followed one play later by a touchdown on a pick six by Clayton Riedel.  For Riedel it is interception number three on the year.  Lane Clark kicked a 37 yard field goal to round out the scoring.

But like the previous week, Hays allowed their opponent back into the game.  McPherson scored their first touchdown at the 8:59 mark of the second quarter on a Ty Hart ten yard run.  Just 52 seconds later after a fumble on the kick-off return by Hays, Kyler Kinnamon scored from 24 yards out making the score 17-14.

Hays would respond with ten unanswered points to close the half on an Alex Delton touchdown pass to Hayden Kruetzer and a Lane Clark 36 yard field goal as time expired giving Hays a 27-14 lead.

McPherson opened the second half with a drive to the Hays High two yard line, but turned the ball over on down.  After a Hays punt, the Bullpups again drove inside the ten but had to settle for a field goal and a 27-17 deficit after three quarters.

Preston Weigel scored on the next possession early in the fourth quarter on a 60 yard run putting Hays High up for good.

McPherson did score again but took almost six minutes to do so getting within 34-23.  Ethan Deterding picked off a deflected pass on the next possession to squelch any Bullpup comeback.

Lane Clark finished the scoring with a 31 yard field goal for the 37-23 margin.

Preston Weigel ran for 150 yards on 18 carries.  115 of those yards came in the fourth quarter.  Alex Delton ran for 116 yards and threw for 140 on 11 of 21 passing.

McPherson out gained Hays 438 to 411.

Hays is now 2-0, McPherson drops to 1-1.  The Indians head on the road to Liberal next Friday in defense of their WAC title from 2012.

TMP Defeats Ellinwood in Opener

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

TMP 24  Ellinwood 8

It didn’t take the TMP Monarchs long to get their motor running in Week 1 of the high school football season.  TMP scored on 4 out of 5 first half possessions and defeated Ellinwood 24-8.  The Monarchs led 14-0 after the 1st Quarter thanks to an 8-yard Nick Schmidt touchdown run and a 58-yard rumble by TJ Flax.  TMP would tack on a Jack You 35-yard field goal in the 2nd Quarter and just before the half Max Megaffin hit Ryan Mayorga on a 10-yard scoring strike to cap TMP’s scoring for the night.  Ellinwood scored a late touchdown in the 4th Quarter to do a little cosmetic work on the scoreboard.

TMP outgained Ellinwood 324 yards to 100 yards.  The Monarchs travel to Clay Center next Friday Night.  The Tigers are also 1-0 following a 14-12 win over Riley County.

Hays High Wins Opening Game Against Junction City

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

Hays High graduated a lot of talent and experience in May of 2013.  That didn’t change the expectations of the Indian’s football team….Win.  Hays High did just that 27-22 over Junction City on Friday night in Hays.

Neither team scored in the first half, even though Hays High drove into Junction City territory each of their first three drives.  Finally in the second quarter Hays it pay dirt.  Junior Alex Delton hit junior Adam Klaus with a 8 yard touchdown pass on third down to take a 7-0 lead.  Hays lead 14-0 at half time when Delton dove into the end zone from two yards out.

The second half started sloppy for both teams.  Each team fumbled their opening play, then Junction City scored their first points of the season on a 2 yard touchdown run cutting the lead to 14-7.  After a three and out the Blue Jays scored again but had the extra point blocked and Hays still led 14-13.

With 4:06 left in the third quarter, Hays gave up the lead when an errant snap sailed over the punters head for a safety.  Hays refused to back down however trailing 15-14..  Lane Clark blasted a kick-off from the 20 yard line for a touch back 80 yards away.  The next play Clayton Riedel intercepted his second pass of the night.

Following a Indian punt, Junction City turned the ball over on a fumble, one of five turnovers on the night.  The ensuing play Preston Weigel sprinted 24 yards for his first touchdown of the season.  Hays missed on a two point conversion attempt and held a 20-15 lead.

Junction City turned the ball over on downs and Hays retook a two touchdown lead on a six play drive all on the ground, capped off by a Ty Whittington 14 yard touchdown run.  Hays led 27-15 with 6:51 left to go in the fourth.

The Indians would allow one more touchdown before shutting down the Blue Jays and running out the clock for a 27-22 win.

Preston Weigel ran for 111 yards and one touchdown down on 19 carries.  Ty Whittington scored a touchdown and ran for 86 yards on just 10 touches.

Hays is 1-0 and will play McPherson at home next week.
