HOLCOMB, Kan. – After dropping a couple of tough games to Garden City to open the season, the TMP-Marian baseball team went back to Southwest Kansas Tuesday to win their first two games for new head coach Aaron Breit. The Monarchs defeated Holcomb 11-7 and 16-0.
TMP (2-2) led 5-0 after four and a half innings in the first game but needed a three-run seventh to take control after the Longhorns rallied with a four-run fifth.
Brady Kreutzer and Brandon Karlin both drove in two to help Carson Jacobs to the win.
Jacobs struck out nine with one walk. He then then hit a three-run homer and drove in six runs in the second game which was called after four by run-rule.
Colby Dreiling struck out five with no walks while allowing only one hit over three innings for the win.
McPHERSON, Kan.-The Hays High Lady Indian soccer team faced their first deficit of the season but responded strong in a 3-1 victory over Salina South in the opening round of the 13th Annual McPherson Invitational. South got on the board first 10 minutes in to take a 1-0 lead but that would be all the Cougars would get in the match. Hays High responded in the 16th minute when freshman Caroline Robben struck with her second goal on the young season to tie the match 1-1 off of an assist from Savannah Schneider. The score would remain 1-1 the rest of the half.
The second half belonged to the Lady Indians. Senior Hannah McGuire got things going early when she blasted one into the back of the net with a nice feed from Kallie Leiker in the 43rd minute. Schneider provided the insurance in the 62nd minute with a long strike that sailed into the net over the outstretched arms of the South goalie.
Hays High improves to 2-0 on the year and will face Maize South in the semi-finals at 6pm on Thursday in McPherson.
COLBY, Kan. – The Hays High baseball team used some solid pitching Monday to start their season 2-0. Trey Riggs threw a complete game one-hitter, striking out 16 without a walk in a 4-0 win in game one of their doubleheader. Palmer Hutchison and Dom Bainter combined on a one-hitter in 9-1 six inning run rule victory in the second game.
Riggs doubled to drive in Palmer Hutchison in the top of the first inning in the opener. It would stay that way until the sixth when the Indians scored twice off a Colby error. They added another run in the seventh off an error.
Hutchison allowed one run on no hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 3 2/3 innings in the second game. Bainter gave up a hit with two strikeouts and a walk over the final 2 1/3 innings.
Dylan Dreiling singled home two runs in the first. Cody Peterson knocked in a run with a single in the second. Riggs and Brock Lummus both walked with the bases loaded to put Hays up 5-0 in the second. Lummus’ sac fly in the fourth drove in another run. The Indians then put the game away with a three-run sixth.
Dreiling and Lummus both drove in three while Riggs knocked in two.
The Indians play their home opener Monday against Washburn Rural.
HAYS-Hays High opened up their 2019 girls soccer season in impressive fashion with a 7-1 win over TMP on Saturday at the Hays High Field. The Lady Indians tallied their first goal in the 14th minute when Taleia McCrae found the back of the net off of an assist from Jersey Johnson. That was the first of six first half goals for Hays as Caroline Robben, Savannah Schneider, Maggie Robben, Johnson, and Allison Shubert all scored for the Lady Indians who led 6-0 at halftime.
Kaylee Hernandez would get TMP on the board in the 44tth, which would be the only goal of the day for TMP who struggled to get the ball on the offensive end of the field all game. Johnson would score her second goal of the game in the 57th minute to wrap up the scoring for the game. Hays High showed their depth as they were able to make wholesale changes throughout the match. The Lady Monarchs did not have the depth but played hard throughout for first year head coach Racheal Hamel.
With the loss TMP drops to 0-3 on the season and will travel to Wichita on Monday to face Word of Life. Hays improves to 1-0 and will be in McPherson on Tuesday for the opening round of the McPherson Invitational where they will face Salina South.
HAYS, Kan. – The TMP-Marian softball team split their season-opening doubleheader with Colby Friday at the TMP Field. The Eagles rallied to take the opener 12-7. The Monarchs came back to win game two 13-7.
Emilee Augustine hit a two-run homer in the first inning of game one then had a two-run double in the third and scored on Sophia Coulter’s double as the Monarchs built a 5-1 lead after three innings. They led 6-2 after four innings when the Eagles struck for 10 runs in the top of the fifth.
Kyleigh Allen allowed 12 runs on 18 hits with seven strikeouts and four walks and suffered the complete game loss.
After giving up a run in the top of the first inning of game two, the Monarchs scored three in the bottom of the inning and six in the second to build a 9-1 lead. Colby answered with four in the top of the third but TMP added two in the fifth and sixth to hold them at bay.
Lexi Gottschalk had three hits and Emily Schulte drove in three runs. Annie Wasinger allowed five runs (two earned) on four hits over the first three innings. Kyliegh Allen came in relief and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks over the last four innings.
GOODLAND, Kan. – The High High softball team opened their season with a pair of blowout wins in Goodland Thursday afternoon. The Indians Jaysa Wichers and Kaitlyn Brown combined on a two-hitter in the Indians 14-0 victory in the opener. Madelyn Waddell went 3-for-3 with homer and five RBIs. Wichers also had three hits and drove in three.
Wichers and Brown combined to allow five hits in an 18-2 win in game two. Macee Altman doubled and tripled and drove in three. Cassidy Prough also had three RBIs.
GARDEN CITY, Kan. – The TMP-Marian baseball team dropped both ends of their doubleheader to Garden City Thursday afternoon. The Buffaloes rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the opener 6-4. The Monarchs were held to two hits and lost 4-0 in game two.
Brady Kreutzer allowed four runs on five hits in two innings of relief and took the loss in the first game. Tyson Dinkel had three hits and Carson Jacobs drove in two.
Colby Dreiling allowed two earned runs over four innings for the loss in the second game.
The TMP boys had three players named to the All Mid-Continent League second-team on Tuesday.
Seniors Jared Mayers and Ryan Karlin area joined on the second-team by sophomore Jackson Schulte after helping the Monarchs to a fourth place finished at last week’s 3A state tournament in Hutchinson.
The 2018-19 All MCL boys basketball first-team is headlined by five unanimous selections including three-time first-team selection Trey Sides of Phillipsburg.
Sides is joined on the first-team by Plainville’s Jared Casey and Tanner Copeland and Ellis’ Zackary Eck and Brady Beougher of Stockton.
Casey is a two-team first-team selection after leading the MCL in scoring this past season after averaging 21 points per game.
Oakley’s Kade Hemmert, Ty Sides of Phillipsburg and Smith Center’s Kyle Sasse joins the trio of Monarchs on the second-team.
Ellis’s Cade Lewis and Brady Frickey were named to the honorable mention team with Hill City’s Dalen Journigan, Trego’s Keagan Shubert and Kade Melvin of Norton.
Phillipsburg claimed their second straight MCL regular season crown.
After claiming their third consecutive Mid-Continent League regular season championship and their fourth in the last five years, finishing 9-0, the TMP Lady Monarchs had two players named to the 2018-19 All MCL second-team on Tuesday.
Senior Emily Schippers averaged a team-high 10.6 points per game and was joined on the second team by fellow senior Jillian Lowe. Lowe averaged 8.3 points per game this past season.
Plainville’s Aubree Dewey, the league’s top scorer at 28 points per game was one of three unanimous first-team selection along with Trego’s Lili Shubert and Jordyn Lowrie from Oakley.
It’s the second straight year Dewey has been named to the first-team.
Grace Eck of Ellis and Norton’s Taryn Kuhn was also named to the first-team.
Lowe and Schippers are joined on the second-team by Norton’s Hadley Hauser, Phillipsburg’s Alexi Beach and Stockton’s Shae Griffin.
Smith Center’s Bree Freiling and Tallon Rentschler were named to the honorable mention team. Ashley Babcock or Phillipsburg, Libby Frost from Trego and Norton’s Tessa Hauser were also honorable picks.
Hays High School Athletic Director Lance Krannawitter confirmed Friday that varsity basketball coach Rick Keltner has resigned. Keltner informed his team on Friday afternoon of the decision.
Keltner has been the head coach for the Indians the past 34 years. He directed the team to a 453-291 record. Keltner started his career at St. John’s-Tipton and, including those seven seasons, amassed a 536-357 record.
The Indians had just seven seasons with a sub .500 record and only two since the 1999-2000 season. The team made six state tournaments under Keltner with a three fourth-place finishes and a one third.
Hays High will begin the search for a new coach immediately.
Hays High’s Tradgon McCrae has been named to the first team of the All-Western Athletic Conference basketball team. McCrea averaged 15.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game and hit a team-high 42 three-pointers.
Dodge City’s Noah Sowers is the WAC Player of the Year. Garden City’s Jacy Holloway is the Coach of the Year.

HOISINGTON – The TMP-Marian Monarchs opened the game on a 9-2 run and had three players score in double-figures as they beat Smoky Valley 60-35 Saturday to claim the 3A sub-state championship.

It took both teams a couple of minutes to get their offense settle in before Smoky Valley grabbed an early 2-0 lead. That would be there only lead of the day.
After they were held scoreless for the first 2:15 of the game Ryan Karlin converted on a layup that sparked a 9-1 run for the Monarchs to end the first quarter with a 9-3 lead.
Karlin hit his second first-half three to open the second quarter as the Monarchs outscored Smoky Valley 9-3 to open the second quarter. A Jared Mayers field goal helped the Moanrchs build a 12-point lead with under five minutes to play in the first-half. TMP’s largest lead of the first-half came at the break at 24-10.
Coming out of the halftime break Mayers scored the first five points of the quarter helping the Monarchs build a 29-10 lead.
Smoky Valley was able to trim the deficit to 13 lead in the third but a late field goal by Bryce Seib gave TMP a 39-24 lead through three quarters.
In the fourth quarter it was Carson Jacobs’ turn to lead the Monarchs, he scored eight straight to open the quarter to put TMP back up by 17.
The Monarchs extended their lead in the fourth quarter and went on to pick up the 60-35 win.

Mayers lead the Monarchs with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds while Karlin added 14 and Jacobs had 12.
The Monarchs improve to 13-11 with the win and are headed back to the 3A state tournament in Hutchinson next week.
