TMP’s Heather Ruder, along with her family and track coach Matt Dumler

TMP’s Heather Ruder signed a letter of intent with Kansas State University this afternoon to run track and cross country.

Ruder helped the lady Monarchs track and field team finish runners-up in class 3A the past two seasons and she is also the three-time defending champion in the 800 and 1600 meters runs. She was also the champion in the 3200 meters her freshman and sophomore seasons.

Ruder was also a standout cross county runner for the Monarchs, winning the 3A individual championship as a sophomore. She finished 2nd as a freshman and finished third her junior and senior season.

Two Indians Sign For College Football

David Cardinal and Emilio Mitchell each signed their letter of intent today to play college football.

Cardinal, an 5A all-state selection, inked with Pittsburg State University.  Cardinal, the two-time WAC player of the year, rushed for over 2800 yards in his career scoring 38 rushing touchdowns.  He finished with back to back 1,000 plus yard seasons for Hays High as a starter the past two seasons.  Cardinal is slotted as a running back for the Gorillas.

Mitchell, an 5A all-state selection, signed with Hutchinson Community College.  Mitchell hopes to move on to division one football after his time with the Dragons.  KU has already shown interest in Mitchell at either linebacker or safety.  Mitchell ended his two year career at Hays High with more than 115 career tackles.

TMP Sweeps Larned

TMPGirls:   TMP  52   Larned  37
TMP picked up consecutive wins for the first time on the season winning 52-37 in Larned.  The Lady Monarchs led by one point at halftime and maintained that lead going into the 4th quarter leading 34-33.  TMP poured it on in the 4th outscoring Larned 18-4.

Melissa Pfeifer led the Lady Monarchs with 16 points who improve to 4-11 on the season and 3-2 in the Mid Central Activities Association.  TMP has won 3 out of their last 4 games and will play at Scott City on Friday Night.

Rose MacFarland Postgame 2-5-13

Boys:  TMP 69  Larned 63
Shane Zimmerman led four Monarchs in double figures with 16 points to help TMP finish the season sweep of Larned on Tuesday night.  TMP looked to be on cruise control heading into the 3rd Quarter with a 15 point lead but the 2nd Half would be anything but a cruise as Larned pulled to within one point heading into the 4th Quarter.  The Indians were able to tie the game a couple of times in the 4th but TMP was able to hit key free throws down the stretch to pull away.

Along with Zimmerman Kameron Schmidt added 14 points, Cameron Fouts 13 points and Kade Megaffin chipped in 12.  TMP will be at Scott City on Friday night.

Hays High 40 – Salina Central 45 (Boys)

Hays High led by as many as five and Salina Central never by more than six as the Mustangs beat Hays High 45-40 on Tuesday night.

The Indians led 13-8 early in the second quarter which Central answered with a 9-0 run to grab a 17-13 lead.  During that run the Indians Jordan Windholz suffered a knee injury.  Windholz had made his first start of the season for Kyler Niernberger is was out due to illness.  Hays rallied back to get within one at 19-18 at half time.

Central jumped out first in the second half with a 7-2 run grabbing the biggest lead of the night at six, 26-20.  Hays responded back to get with in one and then trailed 32-30 after three quarters thanks to a Derrick Bixenman three at the buzzer.  That three spurred on a 8-1 run to give the Indians their final lead at 35-33.  Central outscored Hays 12-5 rest of the way.

Two big stats stood out on the night.  Hays’ 19 turnovers and the Indians being out shot 19-3 at the free throw line.  Hays was 1 of 3 while Central hit 12 of 19.  Both teams made seven treys on the night.  Hays shot 41% (16-39), Central shot 35% (13-37).

Hays was led by Lane Clark who scored 12.

Both Hays and Salina Central are now 10-5 on the season.  Central now owns the head-to-head tiebreaker if Hays and Central should tie for the top seed at sub-state.

The Indians are back at home this Friday to take on Liberal.

TMP sweeps Ellinwood

TMPGIRLS:   TMP 54    Ellinwood 46

TMP picked up their third win on the year with a 54-46 win over Ellinwood.  The Lady Monarchs never trailed in the game and led by 16 points heading into the 4th quarter where they only scored 2 points, both from the foul line.  It was enough for the win.  Jenna Schuckman and Heather Ruder led the way for TMP with 17 points apiece.

Rose McFarland Post-Game 1-29-13

BOYS:  TMP 65   Ellinwood 61

TMP had three players in double figures and defeated Ellinwood 65-61 on Tuesday Night.  Kameron Schmidt came off the bench to lead TMP with 15 points while Shane Zimmerman and Jordan Gottschalk added 14 for the now 5-9 Monarchs.  TMP trailed only once in the game early and held a double digit lead for most of the second half.  Ellinwood made a late run to cut it to single digits but the game was never in doubt late.

Hays High Splits Meeting With Salina South

IndianHays High 38 – Salina South 40 OT (Ladies)

The Hays High Lady Indians lost consecutive games for just the second time this season, as their upset bid of the 6th ranked Salina South Cougars came up short on Tuesday night.  Hays led 7-0 to start the game and built their largest lead (11-3) at the end of the first quarter.  Hays still lead by seven at halftime and by five after three quarters.  South took their first lead of the game midway through the fourth quarter 25-23, but Hays responded with a 6-0 run to lead again by five.  Katelyn Schumacher scored three points over a twenty second period to give Hays a two point lead with 27 seconds remaining.  South missed a shot from the lane, then had a three pointer blocked that was rebounded and scored as the horn sounded sending the game into overtime.

In over time Hays led twice by two points and was tied at 38 on an Emily Braun free throw with 12 seconds left.  Megan Holloway, an Emporia State University signee, went the length of the court and scored with just 2.3 seconds remaining and the Indians heave at the buzzer came up several feet short.

Hays falls to 6-8 on the season while Salina South is now 11-2.  The Indians shot 44% from the field but turned the ball over 19 times in the loss.  Taylor Herman led the team with 11 and Schumacher grabbed 12 rebounds.  Cassidy Cook led the Cougars in scoring with 16 and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Hays High 54 – Salina South 48 (Boys)

Hays High needed to win, period.  Hays had lost three games in a row and were only 2-4 since starting the season with seven consecutive wins.  It wasn’t always pretty but the Hays pulled a win out of Salina South gym 54-48.  Hays shot just 2-14 in the first quarter and was down 11-6 after the first eight minutes.  Hays got within two twice, but could never tie and then fell down seven with 2:45 remaining before halftime.  The Indians then woke up.  Kyler Niernberger converted on a rare four point play, Derek Bixenman knocked in a long three and Adam Deterding scored right before half, giving the Indians a 25-23 lead.  South made two free throws to tie the game at halftime.

After falling behind 27-25 to open the second half, Hays went on a 12-2 run opening up a 8 point lead with all 12 points scored by Brady Werth and Kade Parker.  Hays High led by five entering the fourth quarter, but never gave up the lead despite only scoring one fourth quarter field goal.  Hays went 1-7 from the field but made 13 of 17 and 11 of their final 13 over the final four minutes of the game.  Hays shot 33% from the field, but did make 5 of 13 three’s and 17 of 23 free throws.  South shot 39% made just three, three’s and 15 of 21 free throws.

Hays was lead in scoring by Brady Werth with 14 points while Kade Parker scored 11.  Six players scored four points or more in the win.  Hays moves to 10-4 on the year while South drops to 4-9.

The Indians return to action next Tuesday when they host Salina Central.
