Lady Indians Orchestrate Comeback Over Dodge City, Win 44-42

IndianThe script seemed to be the same for the Hays High Lady Indians from Friday night versus Garden City to their Tuesday game against Dodge City.  Good first quarter, followed by a cold shooting second and third quarter leading to a loss.  Only this time the Indians fought back and won.

Hays High led several time in the first quarter and trailed by just two points three minutes into the second quarter.  Dodge City went on a 9-4 run to end the first half when it took the Indians six minutes to score their first field goal in the second quarter.

Hays then trailed by ten at 31-21 with 5:30 remaining in the third.  And that is when the Indian comeback began.  Four consecutive field goals from Katelyn Schumacher cut the Red Demon lead to two and Janae Gagnon tied the game at 31 with ten second remaining in the third quarter.  Hays pushed the run to 14-0 over the first four minutes of the fourth quarter and lead 35-31.  Dodge City fought back though hitting three pointers to tie the score at 37 and at 42 after Taylor Herman hit both ends of a one and one with :30 remaining.

Hays got the ball with :18 seconds remaining and got two quick shots off before Dodge City tipped a rebound out of bounds.  Schumacher in-bounded to Herman getting the ball right back to Schumacher who scored with less than three seconds remaining.

Dodge City’s timeout came with just .6 remaining on the clock and got a full court heave off that landed well left.

Schumacher scored a career high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in her third double-double of the season.  Dodge City’s Ciera Lampe scored 18 including four three pointers.

Hays shot 17 of 50 from the field and 0 of 5 on threes.  Dodge City was 15 of 41 and made 5 of 17 threes.  The Indians made 10 of 12 free throws while the Red Demons made 6 of 12.

Hays out-rebounded Dodge City 41 to 19.

The Hays High girls are 5-5 on the season and 2-2 in the Western Athletic Conference.  Dodge City is 2-6 and 0-3 in the WAC.

Hays is off until next Thursday when they will play in the Mid-America Classic in McPherson.

The #9 Hays High boys are on the road Thursday for the first round of the Colby Orange and Black Classic to take on Burlington, Colorado at 3:00 in Colby High School.

Hays’ Hutchison Inks Letter With Neosho

HHS-BSB-HutchisonA stellar prep career that isn’t complete just yet has landed senior Hayden Hutchison the opportunity to play baseball on the collegiate level.  Hutchison signed is a letter of intent to play baseball at Neosho County Community College on Tuesday.

Hutchison said that he liked everything from the coaches through the facilities while visiting with the junior college in Chanute.

A career .392 hitter, Hayden batted .456 his junior year with 16 doubles, 24 RBI 22 runs scored while striking out just three times in 86 at bats.

Hutchison battled through injuries during the late portion of his freshmen year and didn’t get a chance to really workout in the off-season before his sophomore year, keeping his number from being even better.

Hayden was the Western Athletic Conference player of the year as a junior and made the All-State team at third base, while also pitching 49 innings to a 6-1 record and a 3.12 ERA with 33 K’s and just nine walks.

Maybe the most memorable moment of Hutchison’s career to date for many was his sophomore year when he pitched six innings of relief for a win versus Newton in the regional semi-finals.  Hays was down 3-0 and Newton had the bases loaded when Hayden entered the game.

Hutchison will enter his senior year five career hits shy of the top ten at Hays High school and a legitimate chance to take over the top spot.  Hutchison set the record for doubles at 16 in a single season this past year and also is three away from breaking the all-time record set by Austin Unrein.  Hutchison is also four homers away from the career record after not hitting one his junior season.  He also sits in 8th place in career RBI, 23 off the all-time record of 83 held by Jeff Bieker.

Hutchison was also part of the Senior Legion team that won a state championship this past summer and qualified for the regional tournament in New Orleans.

Hays High 40 – Great Bend 48 (Boys)

Cliche rivalry talk states that “you throw out the records.”  That was exactly the case as Great Bend now 2-5 on the season put the first blemish on otherwise an undefeated season by Hays High who is 7-1 after a 48-40 loss to Great Bend.  Neither team shot particularly well in the game and was tied at six after the first quarter.  Hays jumped out to a 13-7 lead at the 5:00 mark of the second quarter.  Hays though would go on a 4:30 scoring drought while the Panthers scored fifteen unanswered points to have a 22-15 half time lead.  The Indians fell behind by as many as ten early in the third quarter but got within three at the end of the third quarter on one of their three made three pointers.  After falling behind by eight points, one minute into the fourth quarter, they Indians rattled off an 8-0 run to tie the game at 34 with 3:30 remaining.  Each team went on a 6-0 spurt that tied the game at 40 with 1:25 remaining.  Great Bend hit 8 of their final 10 free throws to win the game…the Panthers had made just 7 of their previous 19 attempts.

Hays’ Brady Werth nearly recorded a triple-double with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 blocks.  Great Bend was led by Ethan Henderson with 12 points and 19 rebounds.

The Indians shot just 29% for the game and 3 of 26 on threes.  Great Bend out-rebounded Hays 48-29.

Hays falls to 7-1 overall and Great Bend is 2-5.  Both teams are 1-1 in conference play.

Hays is at home Friday to play Garden City.  Great Bend is on the road Friday at Dodge City.
