Monarchs advance to sub-state finals with win over Hoisington

HOISINGTON – Ryan Karlin scored a career-high 28 points and the Monarchs made a season-high eight three pointers as they earned a 66-54 win over Hoisington Friday to advance to Saturday’s sub-state championship game.

Hoisington took a three-point lead a couple of time in the first quarter before the Monarchs tied the game at eight at the end of the first quarter.

In the second Hoisington used a three-point lead to take an 11-10 lead with 5:37 to play in the first-half, but that would be the last time they would have a lead in the game.

Down one, Ryan Karlin connected on his second of six three’s in the game to put TMP up 13-11 and they would never trail again.

After another Karlin three the Monarchs led 21-16 in the final second of the first-half when Bryce Seib stole the ball at mid-court and banked in a three-pointers to beat the buzzer that game TMP a 24-16 lead.

In the second-half Hoisington closed the game to four with 5:30 to play in the quarter when Karlin drained another three to put an end to the Cardinals run and put TMP up 30-23.

The Karlin three sparked a 17- 7 run that put TMP up 14 at the end of the third quarter at 44-30.

Karlin added his sixth three-pointer of the game to open the fourth quarter giving TMP a 17-point lead at 47-30.

Hoisington closed the game within 10 two times in the final minutes of the game but the Monarchs were able to hold on for the 66-54 win.

Karlin finished with a career-high 28 points and fellow senior Jared Mayers added 10 points.

Hoisington’s Mason Haxton led two in double-figures with 16 points.

The Monarchs improve to 12-11 and will take on Smoky Valley in Saturday afternoon’s sub-state championship game in Hoisington.

Smoky Valley, the five-seed, defeated the top-seed Phillipsburg 49-43 Friday.

Saturday’s championship games have been moved to 2 p.m. for the girls game and 3:30 p.m. for the boys because of the chance for winter weather impacting the region.

Hays girls fall just short of State in Goddard

Hays High traveled to Goddard on Friday night for a sub-state championship game and berth to the 5A State Tournament.

Both teams played a tight first quarter and to a two all tie through the first six plus minutes of the game.  Hays had four chances to break the tie and take the lead but was unable to do so.  Goddard hit two shots in fifteen seconds to grab a 6-2 advantage.  The Indians trailed 8-5 after the first quarter then cut the deficit down to 8-7 after an Isabel Robben coast to coast basket with 3:30 to go in the half.

Hays had one chance to take the lead without success and then Goddard received points from an unlikely source.  A player that had made one three pointer on nine attempts on the season made back to back three pointers sandwiched around Jaycee Dale field goal for a 14-9 lead.  Goddard hit a third straight three for a 17-11 advantage before Robben hit a put back shot for a halftime score of 17-13.

Highlights

Goddard scored the first points of the third quarter to take a seven point lead at 20-13.  Back to back field goals from Brooke Denning and Taleia McCrae brought the Indians back within three at 20-17 and the lead remained around three points through the rest of the quarter and was at 24-21 heading to the fourth.

Goddard went on a 7-2 run for a game high eight point lead at 31-23 with 3:01 left.  Then it was the Indians turn for their best run of the game.  Six straight points by Hays closed the game down to a 31-29 score with 1:35 left.  The final 1:16 came down to free throws.  Goddard made 7 of 10 free throws while Hays made two of four attempts and made just one of their final five field goal attempts.

Coach Alex Hutchins

Goddard held on for a 38-33 win and punched a ticket to the 5A State Tournament in Emporia.  The #3 Lions go to state at 20-2 while the Indians finish their year at 14-8.

Hays was led by Savannah Schneider scoring ten point.

Hays graduates four seniors that combined for 330 games played, 249 starts, 2010 points, 1147 rebounds, 490 assists and 480 steals.  Mattie Hutchison played in a school record 86 games, Savannah Schneider 85 games, Kallie Leiker 84 games with 84 starts, and Jaycee Dale 75 games.

Late rally lifts Russell past TMP Lady Monarchs

HOISINGTON – The Russell Lady Broncos outscored the TMP Lady Monarchs 10-2 down the stretch in the fourth quarter as they put an end to a four-game losing streak to TMP and beat the Monarchs 51-48 in the 3A sub-state semifinals in Hoisington.

In the first quarter TMP took an early three-point lead on several occasions and led by five at 14-9 after the first quarter.

After building that five-point first quarter lead the Monarchs were held scoreless for a six-minute stretch to end the first and begin the second quarter but Russell wasn’t able to take advantage of the Monarchs’ offensive struggles and still found themselves behind on the scoreboard.

But in the final two minutes of the first half Russell’s Camille Dortland poured in her first of two threes on the night and Megan Peeler added her only field goal of the second quarter to put Russell up 19-18 at the break.

Russell took their biggest lead of the night on back-to-back field goals to open the second half to put the Broncos up 23-18. But after a timeout Adell Riedel knocked down a 15-foot jumped and the Monarchs would outscore the Broncos 13-7 over the final 5:31 of the third quarter to take a 31-30 lead into the fourth quarter.

After Russell took the lead on a pair of free throws to open the fourth quarter Riedel put TMP up 33-32 and then Jillian Lowe hit her only three of the night and converted on a three-point play for six straight points as the Monarchs again matched their largest lead of the night at five points at 39-34.

With just over four minutes to play the game was again tied, this time at 40 and 41 before the Monarchs Emilee Lane converted a three-point play that sparked a mini 5-0 run that gave TMP a 46-41 lead. But it was a lead they were unable to hold on to.

Russell ended the game on a 10-2 run that saw Camille Dortland convert on her second three-pointer of the night and her sister Tiffany Dortland scored 12 of her game-high 24 in the fourth quarter as Russell went on to pick up the 51-48 win.

TMP senior Jillian Lowe finished her night was a career-high 17 points and freshman Emilee Lane recorded her second career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Russell’s Camille Dortland also scored in double-figures with 13.

Game highlights

TMP finishes the season 16-6.

Russell improves to 18-4 and will face Norton in Saturday’s sub-state championship game in Hoisington.

Norton defeated Southeast of Saline 55-23 Thursday.

Hays boys season ends in Salina

Hays High opened the postseason with a trip to #9 Salina Central on Thursday evening.  The Indians entered as the #12 seed while the Mustangs the #5 seed.  The two teams met January 25th in Hays which was won by Central 52-39.

The first time the two teams met the Mustangs made five three pointers.  Thursday night was a carbon copy as Central knocked in five threes and took a 19-9 lead.  The game was tied at two a piece over two minutes in.  Central then went on an 8-0 run.  Hays trailed 16-9 following a Cade Swayne basket but the Mustangs made their fifth three of the quarter as time expired for a 19-9 edge.

Hays missed their first five shots of the second quarter as Central went on another 8-0 run to build a 27-9 advantage.  Braiden Meyers and TJ Nunnery made back to back three pointers to close the gap down to 27-15 with the Indians getting the ball back following Mustang turnover.  The Indians though turned it over which led to a three point play for Central and a 30-15 halftime lead over the Indians.

Highlights

The Indians could never gained much ground in the second half.  Central used an 11-0 third quarter run to lead by 25 and pushed the lead up to 30 at 53-23.  Central led by 28 entering the fourth quarter then went on a 17-0 run starting the continuous fourth quarter clock finishing with a 70-27 victory.

Coach Rick Keltner

Hays finishes the year at 9-12 dropping their final five games.  Central improves to 16-5 and will play in the sub-state championship on Saturday.

Hays High’s Chase Brous signs with McPherson College

Chase Brous wanted to play baseball past high school when he was younger.  However, the more he played football in high school he realized his future might be on the grid iron.  Thursday at the high school cafeteria, Brous signed his National Letter of Intent to play for the McPherson College Bulldogs.

Brous received interest from McPherson College during his junior season but was worried if the interest was still there following a coaching change at the college.  Following a series of conversations with new Bulldogs coach Jeremiah Fiscus and conversations between Fiscus and Indians’ coach Tony Crough, Brous landed a college to play at.

Chase Brous

Brous plans on majoring in elementary education while attending college.  The former defensive lineman for the Indians has hitting the weight room and gaining weight at the top of his priority list before heading off for fall camp.  Coach Tony Crough has already seen the difference in Brous noting that he has put on around 25 pounds since the end of football.  Crough believes one of the top football qualities that helped Brous reach the collegiate level is his tenacity on the field.

Crough also pointed out that Brous was everything that a first year head coach could want in a player and a senior leader.

Coach Tony Crough

In a two year varsity career Brous compiled 72 total tackles, five for loss, two sacks, caused one fumble and recovered four more.  He was named to the second All-Western Athletic Conference defense this past season.

Hays girls advance in postseason winning over Kapaun

Hays High opened the 5A sub-state tournament with the Kapaun Crusaders on Wednesday night.  The Indians earned the seventh seed in the west half of the bracket while Kapaun came in as the ten seed.

It took Hays High six and a half minutes to score their first field goal of the game.  However thanks to strong free throw shooting after driving to the basket the Indians led Kapaun 8-5.  The only lead the Crusaders held in the first half lasted thirteen seconds.  Trailing 5-4 Brooke Denning and Savannah Schneider each sank a pair of free throws to grab the lead back for the Indians.  Tasiah Nunnery then added the first field goal of the game for Hays to finish off a 6-0 spurt.

Hays led 12-7 after one quarter and had their advantage trimmed down to 13-11 following back to back field goals by Kapaun.  Less than one minute later Denning hit the Indians’ first three pointer which ignited a 13-0 run.  Five different players contributed points during the run which lifted the Hays to a 26-11 lead with just over two minutes left in the first half.  The team traded two points each to end the second quarter and Hays led 28-13 at halftime.

Highlights

The Indians lead would never drop below double figures during the second half.  Hays led by as many as twenty in the third quarter 41-21 and 45-27 going to the fourth quarter.  Hays led 48-30 with 4:45 remaining in the game when Kapaun went to fouling the Indians.  Hays made just three of their next eight free throws allowing the Crusaders to get within fourteen points.  The Crusaders were able to get the lead down to a ten point Hays lead with 1:11 remaining.  Tasiah Nunnery and Re Green sank four straight free throws to seal the game 63-48.

Coach Alex Hutchins (we apologize for the technical difficulties during the interview)

Ten players scored in total for Hays led by the 13 from Savahann Schneider making 11 of 12 free throws.  Tasiah Nunnery made 7 of 10 free throws and scored 11.  The Indians made 31 of 47 free throws and 13 of 24 in the fourth quarter.  Hays improves to 14-7 on the year and will play Goddard on Friday for the berth to the 5A state tourney.  Goddard defeated Salina South 50-25.  Kapaun ends their season at 10-11.

Monarchs outlast Lyons to advance to sub-state semifinals

HAYS – After building a 15-point third quarter lead the TMP boys held off a pesky Lyons Lions team Tuesday at Al Billinger Fieldhouse on their way to a 51-46 win.

Bill Meagher postgame interview

The Lions took advantage of nine first-quarter turnovers by the Monarchs and built a seven-point lead with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter. TMP was able to close the gap to just four at the end of one in a first half that was marred by several fouls on each team.

TMP opened the second quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 13 only to see the Lions retake a three-point lead midway through the second quarter. But the Monarchs answered right back with a 14-1 run to end the first-half leading 27-17.

Coming out of the halftime break the Monarchs continued to pile on, building a 36-21 lead with 5:30 to play in the third quarter after Ryan Karlin scored seven in-a-row.

The Lions owned the final five minutes of the third quarter to cut the Monarch lead to just four at 38-34 after three.

Lyons was able to pull within one twice to open the fourth quarter and then tied the game on a Billy Harley three-pointer with 2:20 to play in the game.

The game was again tied again at 44 all when Ryan Karlin buried the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:10 to play in the game putting TMP up 47-44.

The Monarchs sealed the victory at the free throw line making their final four to secure the 51-46 win.

Game highlights

Jackson Schulte lead all scorers with a new career-high 20 points and Ryan Karlin added 10.

Connor Minix led three Lions in double-figures with 13.

TMP improves to 11-11 on the season and advances to Friday’s sub-state semifinals in Hoisington against the host Cardinals after they defeated Russell 61-43 Tuesday.

Girls

#4-4A Abilene 52 – Hays 40
