HHS Boys Soccer Drops Season Opener

The Hays High boys soccer team dropped their season opener at Garden City 3-1. Jordan Windholz scored the only goal for Hays midway through the second half. The Indians host McPherson in their home opener Thursday at 4pm.

HHS Girls’ Tennis Wins Season Opener

The Hays High girls’ tennis team opened their season Thursday with a win at the Cimarron Round-Robin. The Indians tied Tribune with 40 points, but win the tiebreaker on winning percentage.

Freshman Brooke Forinash opened her career going 4-1 to win No. 2 singles. Her victory in the last match of the day pushed the Indians into the first place tie.

Hays had three second place finishes. Shelby Dinkel, who went 4-1 in No. 1 singles, Megan Bird and Jane Gagnon, who were 3-1 in No. 1doubles and Kelsee and Taylor DeBoer who finished 4-1 in No. 2 doubles.

KVA Releases Preseason High School Volleyball Rankings

Several area schools are ranked in the Kansas Volleyball Association high school preseason rankings. Victoria is ranked second in 1A Division II with Wheatland-Grinnell fourth. Smith Center is third in 2A while Hoisington is second and Phillipsburg third in 3A.

AUDIO – HHS Football Team Prepares for Opener

Hays High had 75 kids check out equipment for the first day of football practice.  Coming off a 9-2 season and their first playoff appearance since the mid 90’s Hays High expects to win games regardless of who is on the field.  One of the biggest challenges facing Hays High is replacing all but on of the offensive lineman, as Cade Sharp is the only returning lineman.  Leading tackler Kyler Meyers is back after a 100 tackle season and Hays also returns the Western Athletic Conference player of the year David Cardinal.

The TMP-Marian Monarchs held a 6am workout Monday to begin the high school football season. It was the first practice for John Montgomery who takes over as head coach after two years as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Hays Monarchs Force Second Title Game at “AA” State Tournament

The Hays Monarchs avenged Friday’s nine-inning loss to Iola with a 5-3 win Saturday at the “AA” state American Legion tournament Saturday. The win improves the Monarchs to 4-1 in the tournament and forces a second title game with Iola Sunday at 10am for the state title.

The Monarchs (21-12) took advantage of four errors in the first two innings to grab a 5-0 lead. Iola (40-4) scored one in the sixth and two in the seventh and had the tying run at second base before Shane Zimmerman came in relief and struck out the final two batters for the save.

Starter Pierce Schippers pitched five shutout innings, never allowing a runner past first base and picks up the win. He didn’t allow a run and walked only one in his 12 innings of work at the state tournament.

The Hays Monarchs battled back from a couple of deficits, but it wasn’t enough as they fall to Iola 8-6 in nine innings in the winner’s bracket final of the “AA” American Legion state baseball tournament in Sabetha.

The Monarchs took advantage of three errors and scored four in the third to grab a 4-3 lead. Jacob Fouts hit a two-run double in the frame.

Iola scored three in the fifth to retake the lead but the Monarchs answer an inning later to force extra innings.

Iola loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth and scored the go-ahead run with one out on a suicide squeeze. They added an insurance run one batter later on a sacrifice fly.

The Monarchs had runners at first and third with two outs in the sixth and failed to score. They had them at the corners with one-out in the eighth and also failed to get anyone home, stranding 11 in game.

Brian Brungardt takes the loss in relief, allowing two runs on three hits over four innings. Starter Nick Hammeke allowed five runs on six hits while walking three over five innings.

Iola improves to 40-3 on the season and advances to the 2:30 title game Saturday. The Monarchs fall to 19-12 overall and play an elimination game at noon which you can hear on 14-KAYS.

Eagles Advance To “AAA” Championship

The bats came alive as the Hays Eagles remain undefeated in three games at the American Legion State Tournament in Manhattan with an 11-8 win over Pittsburg.  Hays pounded out 12 hits but where out-hit by Pittsburg who had 14.

Hays led off the game with four in the top of the first inning for a second game in a row, but Pittsburg responded with three in the bottom of the first on two Eagle errors.  Each team scored one in the second inning for a 5-4 score.  Neither team scored in the third or fourth inning.

Hays blew the game open on a four run fifth inning that was highlighted by a Zack Legleiter RBI triple and a two out, two RBI single for Austin Unrein.  Unrein’s at bat was made possible by two errors on one ground ball with one out that allowed both Taylor Renz and Dan Bittel to remain on the base paths.  Hays led 9-4 after the fifth.

The Eagles picked up two more runs in the top of the sixth on a two out, two RBI single by Taylor Renz.  Hays led after the top half of the sixth inning 11-4.  Pittsburg would chip away at the lead with a run in the sixth, two in the seventh, and one in the eighth.

Hays win moves the Eagles to the championship game on Saturday at 3:00.  They will play the Newton/Salina v Pittsburg winner, a game that will be played at noon.

Tyler Woolridge (9-0) threw seven innings, allowing seven runs on twelve hits.  Woolridge struck out two and walked four.  Hayden Hutchison threw the final two innings allowing one run on two hits, two walks and one strike out.

The Eagles are 44-8.  Pittsburg falls to 31-13.

 

Monarchs Advance To Winner’s Bracket Finals at “AA” American Legion Tournament

Pierce Schippers threw a complete game three-hit shutout, leading the Hays Monarchs to a 5-0 win over Silver Lake Thursday night in the second-r0und of the “AA” State American Legion baseball tournament in Sabetha.

Schippers struck out two and walked none, allowing three doubles. He retired the final six batters as the Monarchs move to 2-0 in the tournament and advance to the winner’s bracket finals Friday at 6pm.

The Monarchs first five batters reached base safely to grab a 3-0 lead. They added one in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Jacob Fouts and Taylor Pfeifer both had two-hit games with Pfeifer reaching base safely in all four plate appearances.

Brackets Released For “AAA” and “AA” American Legion Tournaments

The Hays Monarchs will play the first game of the day at the Kansas “AA” State American Legion baseball tournament in Sabetha Wednesday. The 17-11 Monarchs beat Smith Center 11-3 Friday night to win the Zone 6 tournament in Lincoln and will open with Beloit at 1pm.

Ellis, who won the Goodland zone tournament early last week, plays the second game right after the Monarchs, against Silver Lake.

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion opens with Winfield in the second game of the day at the “AAA” state tournament in Manhattan. The 39-8 Eagles play sometime around 1:30pm on Wednesday and you can hear them on 96.9, KFIX.

Junior Legion Goes 2-2
The Hays Eagles Junior American Legion finished 2-2 at the “A” state tournament in Pratt, losing to the Salina Eagles 4-2 Friday night. Hays had defeated Iola 3-1 in their first game in the loser’s bracket.

The Salina Hawks defeated the Salina Eagles 10-0 in the second title game Sunday morning to win the state title.

EMPORIA — (AP) – Make it 7 straight for the West All-Stars.

Former Hutchinson star Ja’Mon Cotton, a late replacement for the West, scored on a 9-yard fourth-quarter run to lift the West to a 14-7 win over the East.

Cotton, who led the Salthawks to the Class 5A title at Welch Stadium last November, rushed for 60 yards on 12 carries to lead all rushers and was named the West’s most valuable player.

Cotton’s TD, which came with 10:01 left in the game, capped an eight-play, 67-yard scoring march. Cotton’s score came a play after the East was whistled for pass interference.

The West led the East 8-7 through three quarters, with a 2-point conversion pass from West quarterback Matt Reed (Wichita Heights) to Jordan Hart (McPherson) in the opening quarter providing the difference at that point.

Hays Monarchs Punch Ticket To State

The Hays Monarchs are heading to the Class AA American Legion state tournament after winning the Zone 6 tournament in Lincoln with an 11-3, six inning victory over Smith Center.

Nathan Zimmerman didn’t allow an earned run over four innings, striking out nine for the victory.

The Monarchs score two in the first, four in the third and three in the fourth. Nick Hammeke doubled for the Monarchs only extra base hit.

Hays improves to 17-11 and will play Wednesday at the AA state tournament in Sabetha.
