Wild West Tournament Begins Today

The Wild West Tournament gets going Friday at Larks Park as well as the Hays High and TMP fields. 18 teams are taking part in the three-day tournament with six of those teams from Hays.

In the Senior Division, the Hays Monarchs take on the Kansas Crush at 9am Friday morning at the TMP field. The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion goes up against Colby at 11:15am at Hays High.

In the Junior Division, Hays will play Great Bend at 9am at Larks Park and the Hays Rangers also play Great Bend at Larks Park at 11:15am. The Hays Renegades will open at 9am against the TMP Junior Legion at Hays High.

The Senior Division championship game is slated for 3:45pm Sunday at Larks Park and the Junior Division championship is set for 3:45pm Sunday at Hays High.

Hays Eagles Down Monarchs

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion scored seven runs with two outs in the first inning and defeats the Hays Monarchs 10-2 Tuesday night at Larks Park. Jarrett Sanders hit a three-run homer and Jake Sedbrook added a two-run single in the big inning.

Taylor Renz pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief for the win (1-1), allowing two runs on six hits, striking out five and walking two.

Pierce Schippers pitched 2/3 of an inning and takes the loss for the Monarchs, allowing seven runs in eight hits.

Zack Legleiter had four hits and Hayden Hutchison three for the Eagles. Nathan Zimmerman had three hits for the Monarchs.

The Eagles improve to 29-4 with the win.

Hays Senior Eagles Finish 3-0 in Leavenworth

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion ran their record to 28-4 on the summer after picking up three shutout wins in Leavenworth over the weekend. In the first game on Sunday the Eagles took on Tonganoxie and picked up an 11-0 win. Hays plated seven runs in the second inning and starter Austin Unrein allowed just two hits in five shutout innings while striking out 11. Unrein also did turned in a strong performance at the plate. Unrein finished two-of-three with a home run and three RBIs.

 

In the second game of the day the Eagles scored in all five innings and Josh Heifner pitched five scoreless innings as the Eagles earned the 10-4 win over Tonganoxie in five innings. Heifner allowed just one hit and struck out three to earn his sixth win of the season. Hayden Hutchinson hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Riley Kaus and Taylor Renz also drove in two runs in the game. The Eagles improved to 28-4 on the summer and they will play a doubleheader with Hays Monarchs Tuesday night at Larks Park.

Hays Senior Eagles Blank Leavenworth

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion scored in every inning and blanks Leavenworth 14-0 Saturday in Leavenworth. The second game was called due to lightning.

The Eagles score two in the first, one in the second, four in the third, two in the fourth and five in the fifth of the run-rule contest.

Riley Kaus led the Eagles nine-hit attack going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Hayden Hutchison and Zack Legleiter also drove in two runs each.

Hayden Hutchison (6-0) went five innings and picks up the win, allowing just three hits while striking out two.

The Eagles improve to 26-4 on the season.

Hays Eagles Sweep Dodge City

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion baseball team continues to roll. The Eagles pick up a pair of run-rule victories over Dodge City Thursday night at Larks Park. Hays wins the opener 9-0 then takes game two  11-3, both in five innings. They improve to 25-4 and will play games at Arkansas City and Wellington this weekend.

Game 1: Eagles 9, Dodge City 0 (5 innings)
The Eagles score three in the second and six in the fourth, helping Josh Hiefner move to 5-0. Heifner allowed just two hits over the five innings while striking out six and walking just one.

Casey Sedbrook and Austin Unrein both had RBI doubles in the six-run fourth inning. Riley Kaus and Jarrett Sanders both drove in runs with a single while Taylor Renz knocked in a run with a sac fly.

Casey Sedbrook, Austin Unrein, Jarrett Sanders and Zack Legleiter all had two hits in the game.

Game 2: Eagles 11, Dodge City 3 (5 innings)
The Eagles strike for five in the second then score six in the fifth. Trevor Henningson moves to 5-0, allowing three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two.

Riley Kaus and Austin Unrein both had two-run singles in the Eagles six-run fifth.

Unrein, Clayton Basgall and Zack Legletier all finished with two hits.

Hays Indians Move Into New Facility

The Hays High Indians have a new home in which to lift weights and train.  Staff and students move in equipment, weights, and machines on Monday, July 18th and are in their second week of using the new facility.

While the entire project is not complete, summer weights instructor Ryan Cornelson says it is nice to finally be in the building.  New weights and machines will be ordered to replace the current ones, along with cardio machines as well.  The current equipment will head to Hays Middle School.

Hays Eagles Senior American Legion Wins Two In Great Bend

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion moved to 23-4 with a pair of wins in Great Bend Tuesday night. The Eagles score a run in the seventh to win the opener 9-8 then score 14 runs on 14 hits in a 14-0, four inning run-rule victory in game two. They host Dodge City for two Thursday at 6pm at Larks Park.

Game 1: Hays Eagles 9, Great Bend Chiefs 8 
Clayton Basgall’s two-run sixth inning single broke a 6-6 tie and gave the Eagles and 8-6 lead.

After Great Bend scored two in the bottom of the inning to tie, Riley Kaus hit a two-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on Hayden Hutchison’s single then scored on an error on the left fielder.

Both teams scored four in the first. The Eagles add two in the second. Great Bend had single runs in the third and fourth to tie the game at six.

Austin Unrein picks up the win in relief despite giving up the two runs in the sixth. Starter Tyler Wooldridge went five innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on eight hits.

Riley Kaus and Hayden Hutchison both have two hits. Clayton Basgall and Jarrett Sanders both drive in two. Sanders did his with a two-run homer in the first inning.

Game 2: Eagles Eagles 14, Great Bend Chiefs 0 (4 innings)
The Eagles strike early, scoring two in the first then add five in the second and seven in the third.

Casey Sedbrook goes four innings for the win, allowing just two hits while striking out five and walking just one.

Zack Legleiter drove in six, four of them with a grand slam in the Eagles seven-run third. Hayden Hutchison also homered, a two-run shot in the first.

Hays Monarchs Sweep Doubleheader

The Hays Monarchs needed just seven innings Tuesday night for a pair of wins over Russell. The Monarchs win the opener 13-2 in four innings and take game two 15-0 in three.

Pierce Schippers and Cameron Brin were the winning pitchers.

Hays Senior American Legion Goes 5-1 at Omaha Tournament

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion goes 5-1 at the Battle of Omaha tournament, losing 5-2 to the Arkansas Black Sox in the first round of tournament play Sunday.

The Black Sox, who hadn’t lost a game this summer and were a state champ during the high school season, scored four in the third and one in the fourth.

The Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Riley Kaus single. Kaus later scored on a wild pitch.

Hays threatened in the fifth but left runners at the corners.

Clayton Basgall takes the loss, going all seven innings and allowing just one earned run while striking out three and walking one.

The Eagles are now 21-4 on the year.

Eagles 5-0 At Omaha Tournament

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion picked up two more wins Saturday to move to 5-0 at the Battle of Omaha Tournament. The Eagles defeated the West Texas Outlaws 11-0 in five innings then knocked off O’Fallon (Ill.) 2-1 to win their pool and move their record to 21-3 on the season. The Eagles begin single-elimination bracket play Sunday morning.

Game 1: Eagles 11, West Texas 0 (5 innings)
Hays struck quickly, scoring three in the first and seven in the second. Hayden Hutchison hit a 2-run homer in the first. He added an RBI double in the second. Trevor Henningson also hit a 2-run double in the second inning.

Josh Heifner moves to 4-0 with the win, allowing four hits while striking out 11 and walking none.

Hutchison and Casey Sedbrook both had three hits. Hutchison finished the game with four RBI. Austin Unrein and Trevor Henningson both drove in two.

Game 2: Hays 2, O’Fallon (Ill.) 1
The Eagles rallied with one in the fourth on Hayden Hutchison home run to tie then scored the go-ahead and winning run in the bottom of the eighth on a Riley Kaus single.

Hutchison was the winning pitcher, working around a leadoff single in the seventh by getting three groundouts to end the game. Hutchison allowed just the one run on seven hits, walking one and striking out one and is now 5-0.

Hays Eagles 3-0 in Omaha

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion moved to 3-0 at their tournament in Omaha following a 12-2, five inning run-rule win over a team from New Mexico Friday morning. Hays scores two in the first then blows the game open with seven in the third. The Eagles had 12 hits and stole seven bases.

Jarrett Sanders hit a two-run homer and Trevor Henningson followed with a solo shot in the big frame.

Henningson had three hits, Hayden Hutchison doubled twice. They, along with Sanders and Riley Kaus all drove in two runs.

Henningson (4-0) was the winning pitcher, going all five innings allowing the two runs on two hits while striking out eight and walking just one.

The Eagles play two more games Saturday against the West Texas Outlaws and O’Fallon, Ill.

Hays Eagles Win First Two Games In Omaha

The Hays Eagles Senior American Legion opened tournament play in Omaha, Nebraska with a pair of lopsided wins Thursday. The Eagles defeat Omaha Benson 13-3 then knock off the Millard Gold Sox 10-5 to run their record to 18-3 on the season.

Tyler Wooldridge throws a no-hitter. He walked four in Benson’s four-run sixth inning including one with the bases loaded. The other two runs scored on an error on third baseman Hayden Hutchison. Wooldridge struck out nine and walked six and moves to 4-0.

The Eagles scored six in the fifth inning to go up 7-0. They then added four more runs in the seventh after Benson’s three-run sixth.

Hays Eagles 10, Millard Gold Sox 5
Austin Unrein allowed just one run on three hits, striking out nine and walking three. He’s now 4-1.

The Eagles took control early scoring seven in the second and led 10-1 before Millard tacked on four in the top of the seventh.

Riley Kaus had three hits and three RBIs.

Hays Monarchs Sweep Dodge City

The Hays Monarchs American Legion won two against Dodge City. Monarchs take the opener 9-7 and win 12-0 in four innings in game two.

Shane Zimmerman and Nick Hammeke were the winning pitchers.

The Monarchs improve to 6-4 and bounce back after losing two to the Hays Eagles Senior American Legion on Tuesday.
