Hays High Softball Headed to State After Win over Valley Center

The Hays High Indian softball team is headed back to the state tournament after a walk-off hit gave Hays a 13-12 win over Valley Center on Tuesday in Hays.

The Hays High softball team earned the No. 1 seed and a first round bye in their 5A regional, after finishing 18-2 in the regular season. In game one in Hays, Valley Center, the four seed, had to come from behind to beat five seed Goddard 9-4 to advance to the regional championship game against the Indians.

In the first inning Hays High got on the board first when Shea Briggs walked and stole second the came around to score on an RBI single from Paige Lunsford. The Indians chased starter Perrin Spears after she got one out in the first.

Valley Center answered right back in the top half of the second to tie the game at one. Hays High’s big inning would be the second, scoring five times on five hits to take a 6-1 lead after two. The bottom of the lineup got things starter when Julie Balzer led off the inning with a walk and catcher Haley Wells singled and that allowed Katelyn Schumacher, to double home Balzer and then Briggs and Paige Lundsford follwed with back-to-back RBI singles and Makenzie Flaska added a two run single as Hays High sent 10 hitters to the plate in the inning.

The Indians added one more on a RBI single from Briggs in the third to give the Indians the 7-1 lead. But every time Hays tried to put the game away the Hornets answered. Valley Center sent seven to the plate in the fourth inning on their way to scoring four in the inning. In the inning Hannah Hearld gave way to Katelyn Schumacher after allowing six runs in four and a-third innings of work.

Valley Center tallied a run in the fifth and sixth innings tie the game at 7 and then took a 12-10 lead in the top half of the seventh inning. Hays High led off the home half of the seventh with back-to-back singles from leftfielder Courtney Storer and catcher Haley Wells. Katelyn Schumacher then walked to load the bases with no outs in the inning. Shea Briggs cut the lead to one with a sacrifice fly. Lundsford singled to load the bases once more for Freshman Hannah Hearld. Hearld drove a two-run walk-off single down the rightfield line giving the Indians the 13-12 win.

Hearld finished 3-4 with two RBI, Lundsford 4-5 with three RBI and Briggs finished 3-3 with a walk and three RBI.

The Indians are headed back to Wichita for the second straight year. 5A state softball will be May 25th & 26th at Two Rivers Youth Complex in Wichita.

Hays High Baseball Regional Champs for 2nd Consecutive Year

The Hays High Indians have advanced to the 5A state tournament in Wichita for a second consecutive year with a 5-2 win over Goddard-Eisenhower and a 10-0 six inning run rule win against Salina Central. Hays is 20-2 on the year and at worst will be the two seed in this year’s 5A state tournament in Wichita to be held at Eck Stadium at Wichita State University.

Tied at one in the bottom of the third inning, senior Riley Kaus blasted a two-run home run giving the Indians the lead. That was more than enough cushion for pitcher Hayden Hutchison to pick up his sixth win of the year, going seven innings and giving up just two runs on five hits, striking out three and walking none.

Hays added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, eventually winning 5-2.

Taylor Renz and Austin Unrein each had two singles in the game.

Austin Unrein hit a triple on the second pitch of the game and never let off the throttle in a 10-0 six inning run rule game.

With two already across in the first inning Taylor Renz belted a two out two RBI double to push the score to 4-0.

Salina Central would have chances to score, loading the bases in each the second and third inning.  The Mustangs had the bases loaded with only one out in the second but flied out to right field and struck out to end the threat.

In the third, pitcher Austin Unrein hit a batter and walked two, loading the bases with two outs, but a diving stop by first baseman Trevor Henningson stalled the Mustang attack.  The Indians retired the next ten batters while Hays scored one run in the third, two in the fifth and then three to end the game in the sixth.

Austin Unrein ended the game with a two run home run sending the Indians to Wichita.  Unrein moved to 4-1 on the season.

 

HHS Girls’ Soccer Advances With Regional Win

The Hays High girls’ soccer team wins their tenth straight Tuesday, blanking Liberal 2-0 to advance to the second round of the 5A regional.

Megan Bird scored in the 14th minute. Michelle Linville added the second goal in the 39th minute on an assist from Taylor Herrman.

The Indians improve to 14-3 and will host Goddard tomorrow at four at the Hays High Field.

HHS, TMP Golf Teams Qualify For State

Both the Hays High and TMP-Marian boys golf teams are headed to state.

The Monarchs bring home their second straight regional title yesterday in Russell, winning by 23 strokes over Beloit. Brady Rohr was top medalist, winning on the second hole of a playoff with Salina Sacred Heart’s Brooks Brown after shooting a 76. The 3A state tournament is next Monday at Sugar Hills in Goodland.

Hays High finishes third at their 5A regional in Salina, holding off Great Bend by one stroke. The Indians Aaron Stewart finishes second with a 76. The 5A state tournament is next Monday at Alvamar in Lawrence.

Hays Softball and Baseball Earn #1 Seeds

Both the Hays High Indians baseball and softball teams have earned number one seeds in their regional tournaments.  The number one seed also means that Hays High will be hosting their portion of the tournament.  Hays will host the tournaments on Tuesday.

The Hays High Indian softball team finished the season at 18-2 with losses to Great Bend and Garden City.  Hays is in a seven team regional which means they will receive a bye in the first round.  #1 seeded Hays will face either #4 Valley Center (14-4) or #5 seed Goddard (13-7). Valley Center and Goddard will play at 4:00.  Hays will play the winner at approximately 5:15 in the championship.  The games will be played Glassman ball fields.

The Hays High Indians baseball team finished the season 18-2 and as the Western Athletic Conference champions for a second year in a row.  Hays will play the eight seed Goddard-Eisenhower (5-15) at 4:00 on Tuesday.  Game one will be between the four seed Salina Central (11-9) and five seed Salina South (8-12) at 2:00.  The championship game will be at approximately at 6:00 at Hays High School.

Hays Baseball Wins WAC Crown

The Hays High Indians have won back-to-back Western Athletic Conference baseball crown by sweeping  Dodge City in make-up games from earlier in the season.  The Indians finish the conference season at 8-0 and have an overall record of 18-2.  With the sweep Hays also earns the #1 seed in the regional to be hosted Tuesday at Hays High School with times to be determined.

Hays High and Dodge City essentially played three seven inning games instead of two on Friday night as game one went 14 innings before Hays won 2-1.  Austin Unrein started the game and went six innings giving up only two hits and one run for the no decision.  Hayden Hutchison came on in relief pitching eight innings and picking up the win.  Hutchison allowed four hits and no runs in moving to 5-0 on the season.  Zach Legleiter hit an RBI double to knock in the winning run in the top of the 14th.  Unrein and Hutchison struck out a combined eleven in the game.  Hays stranded 18 runners on the day, while Dodge left 10 on the base paths.

Tyler Wooldridge pitched a seven inning complete game shutout moving his season record to 4-0.  Woolridge struck out ten in the second of the two games.  Tyler finishes the regular season with a 0.00 ERA over 18 innings pitched.  Hays won the second game 6-0.  Unrein and Legleiter each had two RBI on the day.

Dodge City mustered just one unearned run in the 21 total innings.  The Red Demons scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning of game one.

 

Hays High Soccer Closes Out Historic Regular Season

The Hays High Indian girl’s soccer team closed out the regular season with their ninth straight win yesterday at home against Salina Central. Hays High’s Taylor Herman tied the game at one in the 32nd minute with her 17th goal of the season on an assist from Lauren Murphy. Four minutes later Murphy kicked in the game winner. The Indians 13-3 record is the best in school history. Seeding meetings for Regionals will be held tomorrow.

TMP Baseball Wins 19th Straight

The TMP-Marian baseball kept to their winning ways this season by closing out the regular season with a pair of wins over the Colby Eagles yesterday. The Monarchs won the first game 9-5 and came back and won game two 14-5 to finished with 19 straight wins and a 19-1 record. The Monarchs had already earned the top seed in the Lakin Regional and will get a bye in the first round. The Monarchs will get the winner of the 4 vs. 5 matchup on Tuesday, either Plainville/Natoma or Goodland who play at Lakin on Monday.

HHS Baseball Sweeps Liberal

The Hays High baseball team bounced back from their loss to Goddard in the title game of the Western Plains Diamond Classic with a pair of run-rule win in Liberal Tuesday. The Indians defeat the Redskins 10-0 and 13-3, both in five innings. Hays improves to 18-2 and 6-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. They close out the regular season with a makeup doubleheader in Dodge City Friday.

The Indians jumped out to a 12-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings.

Josh Heifner allowed three runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings for his second win of the season (2-1). He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits while striking out six and walking three.

Austin Unrein had three this and three RBI’s. Jake Sedbrook also drove in three while Hayden Hutchison had two doubles.

HHS Softball Splits In Garden City, Loses WAC Title

The Hays High softball team comes up short in their bid for a share of the Western Athletic Conference title after splitting their doubleheader in Garden City Tuesday. The Indians win the opener 6-2 but lose the second game 4-3 and finish the regular season 18-2 and 6-2 in the WAC.

The Indians trailed 2-0 before scoring three in the fifth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Hays tied it on a Paige Lunsford single then took the lead on a Makenzie Flaska single.

Katelyn Schumacher, Shea Briggs and Hannah Hearld all had two hits in the game with Schumacher driving in two.

Hannah Hearld picks up the win (12-1), allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out four and walking one.

Game 2: Garden City 4, Hays 3
Paige Lunsford’s three-run first inning homer gave the Indians the early lead. The Buffs scored one in the first them tied the game with two unearned runs in the third.

Garden City took the lead for good on a fifth inning solo homer off of Makenzie Flaska who takes the loss in relief.

Starter Hannah Hearld goes 4.0 innings and allows three runs on six hits.

HHS Girls’ Soccer Runs Win Streak To Eight With Overtime Win

The Hays High girls’ soccer team ran their win streak to eight with a 2-1 overtime win over Newton Tuesday at the Hays High Field.

Taylor Herrman scored her 16th goal of the season to tie the game in the 52nd minute. Shelby Dinkel scored the game winner in the 93rd minute.

The Indians are now 12-3. They close out the regular season at home Thursday against Salina Central.

HHS Boys Golfers 4th At Liberal Invite

The Hays High boys golf team wrapped up their regular season with a fourth place finish at the Liberal Invitational Tuesday at the Willow Tree GC.

The Indians shot a 339, 48 shots behind first placeDodge City. Nobody for the Indians placed in the top-10. They were led by Lane Clark’s 10-over 82.

The Indians finish third in the final Western Athletic Conference standings. Aaron Stewart was named honorable mention.
