Hays High Girls Defeat Great Bend 33-16

Paige Lunsford scored 13 of Hays High’s 15 first half points en route to a 33-16 win over Great Bend Tuesday night at the Hays High gym.

The Indians held the Panthers to just five made field goals and forced 25 turnovers.

Lunsford ended the night with 15 points as Hays High improves to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Western Athletic Conference. Great Bend falls to 0-8 and 0-2.

Hays High Indians Outlast Liberal 55-47

The Hays High Indians defeated the Liberal Redskins by the score of 55-47 Friday night in Hays.

The Indians led the majority of the game, but Liberal made a run for it in the 4th quarter, going on a 15-4 run and getting within 4 points of Hays High. The Indians made 5 of their last 6 free throws to come away with the victory. The Indians advanced their record to 4-3 on the season.

Area Football Players Selected to Shrine Bowl

Seven area athletes were selected to the 2012 Kansas Shrine Bowl. The Kansas Shrine Bowl released the East and West rosters this week. This year’s game, which benefits the Shriners’ Hospital for Children, will be played at Welch Stadium at Emporia State University in Emporia on July 28th. Hay High’s Zach Binder, Ellis’ Jared Herl, La Crosse’s Tayler Stull, Plainville’s Andrew Casey, Smith Center’s Truitt Kuhlmann, Great Bend’s Tyler Uselton and Thunder Ridge’s Joel Struckhoff were all named to the roster released Tuesday. Two area coaches were also selected as assistant coaches on the West team; Hays High coach Ryan Cornelsen and La Crosse coach Jon Webster. Garden City’s Brian Hill was selected as head coach.

TMP-Marian Boys Destroy Larned

Thomas More Prep – Marian’s Taylor Pfeifer was able to score the same amount as Larned as a team and the Monarch’s rolled Tuesday night in Larned with a 62-22 victory.

The Monarchs held a 15-point lead at halftime and outscored the Indians (1-4) 17-3 in the fourth to go on for their fifth straight win and second conference win.

Pfeifer scored TMP’s first 10 points on his way to a game-high 22 points. Tuesday’s game was the second time Pfeifer has scored over 20 points on the season.

Senior Jacob Fouts added 15 points for TMP. Larned, who suffered their fourth straight loss, was led in scoring by sophomore Cameron Brown with eight points.

TMP (5-2) has a week off before returning to action next Tuesday (1/10) as they’ll face Abilene on the road. The Cowboys are undefeated and ranked in Class 4A.

TMP-Marian Girls Cruise by Larned

The trio of Rachel Jacobs, Jenna Lang, and Heather Ruder combined for 49 points Tuesday night in Larned as Thomas More Prep – Marian eased by the Lady Indians 63-39.

Senior Jacobs scored the first seven points of the game and the Lady Monarchs (5-2) blitzed Larned early. Jacobs finished with a game-high 20 points.

TMP built a 28-point lead at halftime which allowed coach Alan Billinger to rest most of his starters the entire third quarter.

Senior Lang added a season-high 16 points and junior Ruder chipped in 13. TMP has won three straight games and improved to 2-0 in conference play.

The Lady Monarchs are off until next Tuesday (1/10) when they will travel to Abilene.

Hays High Boys Fall to Pratt 59-42

The Hays High Indians fell behind to Pratt early and never caught up. Pratt ended up defeating Hays 59-42 on Tuesday night.

On the boy’s side, Pratt jumped out a 16-0 lead and allowed Hays to score just 15 first half points in route to a 59-42 win by the state ranked Greenbacks. Hays High did shoot 46% from the field including six threes, but turned the ball over 24 times. The Indians were led in scoring by a career high 14 points from freshman Brady Werth, who also grabbed four rebounds, blocked three shots, and made all six of this free throws.
