TMP girls advance to MCL semifinals with win over Oakley

The TMP Lady Monarchs held Oakley to single digits in the second and third quarters and had two players score in double-figures as they beat the Lady Plainsmen 42-27 Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the MCL tournament at Al Billinger Fieldhouse.

Rose McFarland postgame interview

TMP opened the game on an 8-4 run but led by just one at 10-9 after the first quarter.

The Monarchs build a five-point lead to open the second quarter on back-to-back Jillian Lowe field goals at 14-9. Oakley answered with three straight points to cut the lead back to two at 14-12. But that was all the offense they could muster the entire quarter.

The Plainsmen offense struggles continued in the third scoring just two points while the Monarchs scored 14 points in the third quarter that allowed the Monarchs to build a 31-14 lead.

Oakley was able to outscore TMP in the fourth quarter, 13-11 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Monarchs lead as TMP claims the 42-27 win.

Jillian Lowe finished with a career-high 16 points and Adell Riedel scored in double-figures for the fourth time in the last five games with 10.

Game highlights

TMP improves to 7-3 and will take on Norton in the MCL semifinals after the Blue Jays beat Phillipsburg 47-34 Tuesday.

Oakley is 5-5 on the season.

Monarchs outlast Ellis to advance to MCL tournament semifinals

Jackson Schulte hit back-to-back fourth quarter threes and the Monarchs made just enough free throws down the stretch as TMP-Marian held off the Railroaders 54-53 Monday in Ellis in the quarter finals of the MCL tournament.

Bill Meagher postgame interview

TMP opened the game on a 7-2 run and built a seven-point lead after back-to-back field goals from Jared Mayers. Mayers recorded his second straight double-figure game with 15 points.

The Monarchs largest lead of the game came at nine, twice in the second quarter, the final time at 26-17. TMP lead by five, 28-23 at halftime.

With just under four minutes to play in the third quarter the Monarchs had built a 34-29 lead after a pair of Ryan Karlin free throws.

But Ellis outscored TMP 10-4 over the final 3:45 of the third quarter to take their first lead of the game at 39-38.

Two minutes into the fourth quarter the Railers took a 44-41 lead on a Brady Frickey three pointer but TMP’s Jackson Schulte hit back-to-back threes to give the Monarchs a three-point lead at 47-44.

It was a lead the Monarchs were never relinquish on their way to the 54-53 win. Ellis made it close with a potential game-winner by the Railers Brady Frickey missing a jump shot as time expired that would have gave Ellis the win.

TMP had two finish in double-figures led by Jackson Schulte’s 16, a new career-high for him. Mayers added 15.

Ellis had three players finish in double-figures with Brady Frickey scoring a game-high 19.

TMP improves to 7-4 with the win and will take on Hill City on Friday in the MCL tournament semifinals after they defeated Oakley 48-33 Monday.

Ellis drops to 5-3 on the season.

Game highlights

In the other quarterfinal games Monday Phillipsburg beat Norton 53-38 and Plainville beat Trego 51-36.

Monarchs beat Smith Center; advance to MCL tournament quarterfinals

The TMP Monarchs closed the third quarter on an 11-2 run to build a four-point lead over the Smith Center Redmen and they would never travel again on their way to a 65-59 win in a feather bracket game Saturday in Stockton.

Bill Meagher postgame interview

After the Monarchs built a four-point first quarter lead on a number of occasions the Redmen outscored the Monarchs 17-14 in the second quarter and took a 28-26 lead into the halftime break.

Smith Center matched their largest lead of the first-half at four in the third quarter at 35-31. But the Monarchs were able to chip away at the lead at closed the third quarter on a 15-7 run. Ryan Karlin and Lucas Lang hit back-to-back threes as the Monarchs built a 46-42 lead.

In the fourth quarter the Monarchs made six of their final nine free throws to secure the four-point victory.

Jared Mayers finished with a career-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Ryan Karlin chipped in 13 and Jackson Schulte had 12.

Rece Buckmaster led three in double-figures with 12 for the Redmen.

Game highlights

The Monarchs improved to 6-4 and will take on Ellis Monday in the MCL quarterfinals at 6 p.m.

Smith Center falls to 2-7 and will play Stockton in the MCL tournament 9th place game Thursday in Stockton.

Girls

Hays 64 – Great Bend 41

Hays was never really threatened in their second conference game of the season.  Hays jumped out to a 8-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game on a pair of field goals and four free throws.  Great Bend closed within four at 10-6 over a three minute stretch.  The Indians scored eight points in the final 1:15 of the first quarter and used that as fuel for a much bigger 26-6 run that put that Hays lead at 36-12.  The Indians took a 38-14 lead into halftime.

Highlights

The Indians were led in scoring by Brooke Denning and Savannah Schneider who each scored 12. Jaycee Dale added 11.  Eleven of the twelve players that entered the game scored in the contest.
